Good evening, and welcome to another distinguished meeting of the Deeply Fought Discussion Society. This week, Prof. Zubreckyj has brought a tantalising titbit for one's contemplation: just what, precisely, makes something pretentious? Our respectful tête-à-tête leads to unexpected destinations; our travel companion, sparkling repartee. This episode's mistakes include: The video call shitting the bed and requiring 30 minutes of tech diagnostics mid-pod. Misquoting a Radiohead lyric and then fixing it in post in humiliation. Selling out one's confetti principles for money. Egregious factual inaccuracies. Take a moment of zen, then like us on Facebook, follow us on Instagram, rate us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and send your questions to deepfought@gmail.com.
The overwhelming majority of what is Christendom believes it is functioning under the New Covenant and that it is somehow a New Israel or a replacement for Israel. This belief will destroy (and has destroyed) many a Bible commentary. Further, it has stifled the growth of millions upon millions of believers. Finally, it has deluded well over a billion into believing that can attain resurrection life by their own efforts. On the right side of the web we find almost all the robbing from Israel. Not only does this lead to gross antisemitism, but it sadly leaves so many ignorant of the blessings of the far above the heavens. Believers trade the unsearchable riches of Paul's revelation in Ephesians for some ethereal heavenly hope based on earthly promises. Sad. But we don't have to stay where we are. God is ready to enlighten unto Paul's revelation those who seek it. #theology #zionism #israel

Unfortunately, one of the most oft-repeated St. Francis quotes is something he never said. Let's set the record straight AND hear a new song from another influencer: our music guy, Dr. Andy Coward.

Today's episode continues the discussion regarding pastor's who suggest that the Scriptures don't really address the homosexual lifestyle. They can only support this through some manipulation, hoop jumping, and ignoring the arc of the biblical narrative throughout time. But they try so we will discuss why they are in error. Misquoting the Bible is a bi-partisan political tradition as old as kissing babies and speeches at Labor Day picnics. Journey Now's roundtable crew asks why our leaders keep trying to quote scripture—and messing up the message. Should we expect better? Is this just pandering, or do these moments reveal more about the hearts and minds of the political speaker? In this episode's second half, Journey Now elder Ty Hasty shares how his non-profit, service trip organization, IC13, has continued to make a difference in the time of COVID. Suzie Lind hosts the discussion. Got comments or questions? Text us at (615) 861-9503 and join the conversation. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/journeychurch/support
What does it mean when a child has fallen away from the faith? Is this due to a failure in our own parenting? After all, Scripture says “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). Understanding this verse is a useful reminder of the importance of parenting and what to do if a loved one falls away from the faith.

What does this truly mean and can it be applied in our lives?Scripture Reading: For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.Ephesians 2:8-10
Everything works out for the good. This phrase can be a source of comfort for many, but it can also be difficult for those who are in the midst of sudden, unexplainable pain. Do all things truly work out for our good?

There is a natural aversion toward people who are judgmental and quick to offer their criticism. This is a strong opinion that many people have against Christians is that they find them judgmental. Even Jesus said, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.” So why is it that judgmentalism exists? And is there a place for judgement? Find out more this Sunday as we explore what it means to judge and God's views on judgement.

The sermon series, “Misquoting Scripture” continues with part two in this episode. Kristopher Loewen preaches on common sayings that address a common issue known as “the problem of evil”: making sense of a good and powerful God in light of a world undeniably filled with suffering. Some of those sayings include “everything happens for a reason” and “ God never gives us more than we can handle”. In his sermon, pastor Kristopher challenges these explanations and suggests a view of God that prioritizes human freedom, even if suffering is a consequence. Are you easily deceived- Someone has said that the church is damaged by error in the pulpit and public gullibility. For example, a gullible congregant would sit and listen to a pastor who claims to have direct revelation from God. John warns Christians to cultivate discernment regarding what they listen to. One current deception that has tricked many people is that a pastor can live a life free from accountability because he refers to himself as the Lord's anointed. This title awards him immunity from accusation. In this sermon we examine whether a person who reveres such a pastor is actually honouring God or whether he is simply gullible.
What would you like for someone you love- Spiritual stability is certainly a worthy desire. Consider Paul's spiritual stability throughout his four years in prison. He can still write to the Philippian church with joy. At the heart of his stability is the drive to make God look beautiful, even through suffering. Even through suffering there are moments where people are not actually suffering. The painful moments in spiritual suffering do not destroy the good ones. In relationships too--we can destroy all of the good we have because of some negative aspects. So many people are not like this. Therefore, they consider a challenge not worth the inconvenience. They won't even start. Paul learned the secret of being content. Being content is the key to spiritual stability. Christians need to believe in their hearts that they have enough. It is a secret that must be learned. Contentment is a heart issue that says, -God will give me the ability to honour Him in any situation, even if I don't have food to eat-- In this way, Christians can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
How do we relate to people who are different to us- Today there is such a strong public attitude that you should not judge. Even if people don't care about the Bible, they us it to support their objection that you should not judge them. God's wrath is certainly not instructing us to never make a judgement. It that were true, it would make it impossible for society to function. Notice that people who criticise other for judging, are actually judging. Rather, Jesus provided a framework in which people should judge. Firstly, the judgement He is speaking about is spiteful criticism. James calls this speaking evil against a person. This prohibits judging people's motives. Ever. Rather, gather information before concluding. Don't assume. Beware of holding people to your own personal standard--whether regarding, food, culture, anything. Don't be harder on other people than you are on yourself. Look out for a defensive position in you when other people criticise you. You have something missing in your understanding of the gospel. Are you failing to see your own sin- Are you failing to be merciful- Such is a major issue. It is God's word that helps us to see our own sin. It is close relationships with other people that help us to see our own sin too. This is what love looks like. Judgement is a blessing, not a curse. It also creates opportunity for you to help others. Critical judgement- no. Kind, loving judgement- yes-
The Bible is a holy book. It is holy because it is the Divinely inspired Words of God. Jehovah used at least thirteen men to write His words, record the history of the Jewish people, share the prophecies and warnings. You will be blessed for reading it. It is also spoken daily out of context. It is misquoted by preachers, pastors, elders and folks that know better. It is quoted by demons, charlatans, false teachers and the anti-Christ. If you don't know the context, you can be duped, fooled, hoodwinked and bamboozled. 2 Timothy 2:14-16 King James Version (KJV) 14 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. 15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. Psalm 119:99 King James Version (KJV) 99 I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. John 5:39 King James Version (KJV) 39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. "The hardest thing to explain is the glaringly evident which everybody has decided not to see" - Ayn Rand Nowhere is this quote more true then when left leaning academics are forced to articulate Rand's ideas. In this podcast, we analyze philosophy professor Skye Cleary's valiant attempt to break out of the academic echo chamber. Cleary's Article: Philosophy shrugged: ignoring Ayn Rand won’t make her go away https://aeon.co/ideas/philosophy-shrugged-ignoring-ayn-rand-wont-make-her-go-away

Perhaps one of the best-known and most misused verse in the whole Bible is Matthew 7:1, "judge not, lest ye be judged." We've heard it before, especially in the old King James language, both within the church and outside the church as an excuse to sin. Is that truly the Lord Jesus' intention? Listen in to find out.

Jeremiah 29:11 is a very popular verse in our culture. It is found all over--on coffee mugs, in greeting cards, and even on tattoos. It can become easily misused, but it certainly casts our hope forward to the ultimate hope and plan that God has through the Lord Jesus Christ.
This week’s twisted verse highlights what can happen when we take a single verse out of context. Misquoting scripture can change the message of scripture. This week we look at Philippians 3:13-14. Many people have described Muslims modernities as being fundamentally disrupted by individual and civilizational encounters with western society. Wether rejecting or accepting alternative modes of thinking Muslims have responded to these new challenges with increasing regularity for over 200 years. Misquoting Muhammad: The Challenge and Choices of Interpreting the Prophet’s Legacy (Oneworld Publications, 2014) focuses on one of the central tasks for Muslims in the contemporary period, namely the interpretation of scripture and tradition. Jonathan A. C. Brown, Associate Professor and Associate Director of the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University, carefully maps out multiple Muslim interpretive strategies in order to reveal the links and legacies between the pre-modern and contemporary periods. After a detailed explanation of pre-modern schools of thought, attitudes towards scripture, and hermeneutical methods Brown tackles the fragile relationship between text, community, and reader in determining ‘Truth’ in changing circumstances. We see that very often the interpretive methods used to deal with contradictions or discerning boundaries of permissibility were the same but led to divergent answers. Brown interrogates these larger issues through numerous case studies and examples. In our conversation we only scratched the surface of this detailed book. We discussed changing norms by which scripture are judged, women led prayer, the noble lie, tradition betraying or redeeming scripture, Shah Wali Allah, the Arab Spring, Sheikh Muhammad al-Gahzali, authenticity and the use of dubious hadith, verse 4:34 and the role of courts, and the historical precedent of saying “No” to scripture.
