IN ANGELA'S OWN WORDS:I was in the 3rd grade at an elementary school in rural Oregon, when my teacher Mrs. Peterson gave me the lead role of Little Red Riding Hood in the school play to help me overcome my paralyzing shyness. It worked. If she saw me now, she'd ask me to stand down and let someone else take a turn.Following my 9-year-old acting debut, I auditioned for a nearby musical theatre company with my mom & brother. They were both cast in the chorus of ‘The Music Man,' and I was asked to stay off-stage and run the spotlight. My lack of singing ability stalled my career as quickly as it started. The acting bug didn't strike again until a modeling gig for a cheerleading uniform company helped me land an agent in Portland. From there came a handful of commercials and lots of dinner theatre.I didn't exactly sprint out of the gate, but I did count my blessings early with a fun role in a Robin Williams movie and a guest-star role on ER, …oooh, maybe I'll meet Clooney! Then there was a big writer's strike. It went on so long my agency shut down and I was, as they say on set, ‘back to one.' (Disclosure-I was and am in full support of my fellow union workers!)Waiting for the phone to ring sucks, so I took matters into my own hands and produced a staged play at a small black box theatre. Surely, if I spent all my hard-earned waitressing dollars on theatrical rights, stage rentals, and hard-to-find props, I'd be discovered. When that didn't work, I decided to by a camcorder and take a film class at the community college. I wrote a short film about the perils of being a struggling actress and managed to convince some friends to help me make it. My mom was even in town and worked as a free cinematographer. The countless short films and web series may not have been seen by Spielberg, but they sure were a blast. And learning about every stage of production and every job on set paid off in ways I'm still benefitting from. Both in working knowledge & connections.I won best comedy writing awards, best comedy actress awards, and best indie film awards. I got to play all three Kartrashian sisters, Elizabeth Taylor and even dropped my first single complete with a music video. If only auto-tune had been around for that early musical audition! The skills behind the scenes have helped me find a ‘day job' that allows me to share my talents with the local non-profit, Alzheimer's Los Angeles, where I develop and create edutainment that raises awareness and makes a difference in people's lives. Some of the scripted works have received multiple boundary-breaking and innovation awards.Along my journey I met the uber-talented Laura Lee Bahr, who wrote and directed a feature for me to produce and star in alongside the cutest dog in the world, who happens to be mine. It was truly an art-imitating-life story about an actress, moonlighting as a dog-walker who must save an adorable Maltese from some crazy Hollywood characters. We overcame the typical odds of an indie film and secured both national and worldwide distribution. #humblebragI've schmoozed as a TV Academy member, performed my set on famous comedy stages and finally got to go to the Emmys.I should probably add some more celebrity name dropping and list the high-profile credits, but this bio has gotten a little too long so you will have to click on the resume button on my website if you want to see those.I'm grateful to be able to pursue the things I love and build fabulous relationships along the way. While I may not have my series regular role…YET, I'm certainly living my dream.More info and to contact Angela: http://www.angelalandis.comPhoto credit: Danette MitchellMusic courtesy Zakhar Valaha/Pixabay.To contact Wilkinson- BecomingWilkinson@gmail.com

Disabled people are the United States' largest minority group, encompassing a quarter of the country's population. And yet only 5% of characters in television, film, and theatre are disabled, and only 2% of those roles are actually played by disabled actors. Christine Bruno is a multi-hyphenate whose many titles include actress, activist, teaching artist, disability inclusion consultant, and warrior. She joins the podcast today to shed light on how the disabled community navigates the entertainment industry. As non-disabled actors and creatives, we lack a certain level of awareness and firsthand experience when it comes to representation and the problematic nature of non-disabled actors playing disabled characters. Christine is here to educate us so we can be better advocates for the disabled community, making the entertainment industry more inclusive. I gave Christine full permission to correct me throughout this very important conversation. From the language do's and don'ts surrounding disabled people to the problem with non-disabled actors playing disabled roles, Christine uses her expertise to lovingly put us in our place while fiercely advocating for the business we want to see. To be an artist, Christine believes you need advocacy and activist tools in your toolkit and this episode is a masterclass. Tune in if inclusion is important to you and be prepared as Christine lovely schools us on how to be a true ally to the US' largest minority group in the entertainment business and in life. CLOSER LOOK & TAKEAWAYS The most important 3 things you need to know if you want to be a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion advocate The things casting directors are not allowed to ask Why lived experience (disability, race, sexuality, etc) is not a technical acting skill How Christine navigated NYC as a disabled young woman Christine's serendipitous journey to becoming a disability advocate in the entertainment industry What Christine's one opportunity to prove herself taught her about making herself undeniable and being her own advocate What you can do to become a better ally to the disabled community Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Brian Breaks Character! On today's edition of Midday at the Movies, two of our favorite film aficionados -- Washington Post film critic Ann Hornaday and Maryland Film Festival founder Jed Dietz -- join Tom for a discussion of the widening impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the entertainment industry. Late Wednesday, we learned that actor Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson, have tested positive for the virus. Amid a steady stream of public health advisories warning people -- especially folks over 60 -- to avoid large, dense crowds and confined spaces to reduce their risk of infection -- a new survey shows many Americans have serious concerns about whether it's safe to attend public art performances or go to movie theaters. Growing numbers of public art & film events across the country -- including all Broadway plays in New York City and the huge South By Southwest Festival (SXSW) in Austin -- have been canceled or postponed in the face of the spreading virus. But life goes on...and today the movie mavens also discuss a couple of interesting new films, including: The Burnt Orange Heresy, which stars the veteran Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger, a rock icon who was kind enough to speak with Ann about his role for her Post feature; and the latest rendition of Jane Austen's classic novel Emma.
Aften grew up in California, and this small-town beauty tells Dave she was an excellent student and active in track – short distance and the long jump! Her claim to track fame was her fifteen-foot jump! In the last few years of high school she became distracted by a guy, and as would be expected, her educational endeavors and focus changed, hence her grades began to slip… After high school Aften started working at a hardware store with her Dad, working the cash register and doing inventory. Aften shares how her stepmother inadvertently introduced her to watching porn, which planted the seed for her to get into the business. Aften and her boyfriend, which is now her husband are into swinging – so when they looked online into modeling agencies, it naturally drifted into checking out the adult industry – they came across Motley Models and the rest is history! She talks about the emotional rollercoaster she experienced once she began work. Her first few scenes were for NET VIDEO GIRLS – she shares that she was a nervous wreck… Then come the suspicions and the eventual “pee on a stick” – she tested positive, went on a hiatus and eight months later – gave birth to a beautiful baby girl! Aften’s post-baby body was awesome, so she conveyed to Dave she wanted to continue on her career-path in the industry. She discusses her shoots for NEW SENSATIONS and TEAM SKEET – Warning: You may never look the same way at a Thanksgiving Turkey! Aften shares her fetishes, which include spanking, choking (the tighter the better), hair pulling and biting! Her phobias are spiders and reptiles. Aften’s favorite musical genre is music from the ‘50s, which she attributes to the influence of her Dad! Her food favorites are In n Out, Life cereal, Snickers and Spicy Chicken Sandwiches. She is looking forward to the 2020 AVNs, hanging-out, and meeting her fans! Instagram: aften_opal Twitter: aftenopalxx
