About Today's GuestAs Executive Director, Besa brings leadership at NMFA along with her personal experience as a military spouse to this incredible team. Besa is an award-winning journalist and marketer whose passion for our military began during her time as a reporter and television news anchor. From Jacksonville, North Carolina to Kosovo, her assignments opened her eyes to the post-9/11 military experience, and its cycles of deployment, redeployment, and constant transition. She also covered highly-contentious Congressional hearings and the impact military life has on families, including the effects of water contamination aboard military bases. During Besa's time covering Camp Lejeune, she met a guy named Dave, whom she decided to marry despite warnings to “never marry a Marine.” Now 15+ years later, they live on Capitol Hill with their 3 kids.Links Mentioned In This EpisodeNational Military Family Association Web SiteMilitary Teen Experience ReportBasic Needs Allowance LegislationPsychArmor Resource of the WeekThe PsychArmor Resource of the Week is the PsychArmor course Veteran 201: Military Families. In 2016 I had the privilege to join the cast of the third film in Jordan Brady's I am Comic trilogy. Jordan is a commercial director now, and he's a seasoned documentarian, but he's also directed Hollywood features, hosted MTV game shows, and in a lesser known piece of trivia, is the inventor of the phrase "bow chicka bow wow," which was a signature piece in a very successful stand up comedy career. The film I'm in, I Am Battle Comic, looks at what it's like to perform for the United States military overseas. It touts a star studded cast of comedians, much like the previous two films in the trilogy, I Am Road Comic, and the cult classic that started it all, I Am Comic. I Am Comic features interviews with Phyllis Diller, Jeff Foxworthy, Lewis Black, Tim Allen, as well as a host of known and unknown names at the time, and I can't recommend it enough as a primer on stand up comedy beyond what you see in a typical Netflix special. More importantly, Jordan and I have become friends, and his optimistic approach to the world of entertainment is infectious. I sat down with him to find out the stories behind his and how he goes about making things. You can visit Jordan's world of commercial directing at www.CommercialDirectingFilmSchool.com Also, try Jordan's Oso Delicious Hot Sauce.  I personally keep a bottle of each at the house, because the Texan in me loves a little heat.  Visit www.OsoDelicious.org, where $1 from every bottle bought, stolen, or broken goes to the National Military Family Association, another organization I care deeply about. As an Army cadet, Wesley met a good Christian young man who shared his faith and stole her heart. She married Larry Bauguess during her senior year. Upon graduation, they entered the Army and served together as Lieutenants and Captains. The Army life was perfect for this patriotic duo. They had a wonderful marriage for nearly fourteen years and were blessed with two beautiful daughters along the way. Tragedy struck in May 2007, when Larry was killed in action while serving overseas with the 82nd Airborne Division. Wesley and her tiny daughters were at home at Fort Bragg when the notification team delivered the heartbreaking news. How would they ever go on without him? Eventually, Wesley discovered that she already had all the tools she needed. The lessons she learned at church, in the Army and on the golf course had already shaped her character. They had already taught her patience and resilience. Those lessons would serve her well and give her the strength to carry on. This is her story. In 2009, the National Military Family Association recognized her as a Very Important Patriot, an honor only given to five volunteers each year from around the world. Huge shout out to Marc Henretta of Jeep, Sterling Doak of Fender and my longtime friend Chuck Meehan for moderating the Q&A. Midday the review came out from Sean L. McCarthy, aka the comics' comic. Read it. Comedians Tammy Pescatelli and Slade Ham, both in the film, showed up to make for a funny Q&A. We raised well over $4,000 for National Military Family Association, with many donations made on the spot. Way to go Detroit! Everything about these theatrical events is here at www.jordanbrady.com.
