PTSD and severe wounds don't really care about political views, party affiliations, or opinions on sensitive topics. They exist, they are real, and they affect thousands of real American people. On the bright side, providing massive help to them is pretty simple; anyone can do it, and it doesn't require communing with any particular political view. In today's episode, I'm joined by the inspiring Leslie Hunt and her infectious energy. She is the Director of Donor Partnerships at Hope For The Warriors®, a private company dedicated to serving those who served and their families, helping military veterans to transition into civilians, get employed, and deal with mental and physical health issues. We talk about the things society and most institutions fail to provide for military veterans and their families, the importance of peer-to-peer mentorship, and the impressive work of Hope For The Warriors®. We also discuss how auto repair shops can benefit from employing veterans and the multiple (and effortless) options we have to extend a hand and offer valuable help. What a joy it is to start the week as we have for a decent number of years, with a sense that something good might be brewing at the Warriors. It's easy to dismiss the Warriors and many have. But it's also easy to get excited about a new year when you have a start that looked like the effort we saw on Friday night in Wellington. I liked Andrew Webster when he came in to see us last week. Having interviewed all the coaches, and man have there been a lot of them, they all come to the job with the same intent. A lot of them say the same things but Webster seems a little bit different. He's awfully likeable, he seems authentic, he seems realistic, and he seems like a bloke that players can look up to and learn from. If Friday is a guide, we look good. We have recruited well. There are a lot of good, dynamic players that, if they are consistent, will serve the side well. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad scored on Friday and, if you don't follow all this closely, has been with the side before. I can't remember why he left but I remember thinking he was a real talent and it was a shame he was off. So, it's a thrill to have him back and looking as good, if not better, than he was. Even Shaun Johnson, who these days gets more scrutiny than he does accolades, looks like he might be up for a bit. Maybe he's a bloke who responds to atmosphere? When he likes what he sees he steps up and he looked excellent. Overall, the whole team looked good. They defended well and a number of tries for the Knights that might have been scored other years, weren't. If this is a taster, you'd be miserable if you weren't pretty stoked about round one. Like all the other years there is a good queue of so-called experts that have written the side off. But part of the joy of sport is loyalty, as the fly-by nighters ebb and flow with each week. Given this is a new-ish side with a new coach, surely it's fair to start with at least a partially clean slate? And if you do that then Friday was full of hope and satisfaction. It's early days, but, do you reckon this is our year? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Pete Rizzo spoke with Communications Director Matt Holton about the 'Run For The Warriors' event taking place at Belmont Lake State Park on November 6th at 9 am as well as how the organization helps veterans transition from the military and back into society.
Robin Kelleher is the President and CEO of Hope For The Warriors, an organization she co-founded in 2006 as a grassroots organization that has now grown to national heights, having raised over $53 million for impacting the wounded and fallen military members, their families, and their communities. She's responsible for developing and implementing the strategic direction of the organization, providing budgetary and mission-focused guidance to their growing staff. Robin's husband is a member of the military, and as a family they moved to a military community in 2002. The next year, her husband's best friend was severely wounded. Through that, Robin realized that the wounds extend beyond just the service member—the whole family unit and even the community is damaged. The trauma that military members and veterans face is hard to fathom, but the effects are far-reaching. Hope for the Warriors finds creative solutions to bring resources together and help solve problems. They don't believe in “no.” When tornados ravaged communities in Kentucky, Hope for the Warriors collaborated with a group of partners from local grocery chains to Frito-Lay to truck company Forward Air, the armed forces, and the YMCA, all to address food insecurity in those areas hit the hardest. Hope for the Warriors is primarily donation driven, and they are a great investment. All money donated goes directly to the people who are being impacted. The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “I want the American people to see the value and the importance of military families, and that while they're still at war at home, when you look at who's your best bet as an employee, who is going to be the leader of your boy scout troop, and who's going to be the coach of the baseball team, the first ones to raise their hands are going to be the military families. They're strong and resilient, but they still need support and just because we're not at war abroad, many families here are still at war at home.” -- Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. Sergeant Mark Green served in the U.S. Army National Guard for 12 years. On his last deployment and upon his return home he was transitioned to the Army Warrior Transition Battalion where he underwent two surgeries and began his recovery. Encouraged to get up and out of his room by his cadre, Green began going to adaptive sports activities and was introduced to not only adaptive cycling, but now, Run For The Warriors Race Director, Robyn Womac, who at the time was the adaptive sports coordinator for the Battalion. Handcycling quickly became his outlet where he didn’t feel limited by his disability and gave him the opportunity to socialize. When he was faced with the news of having another surgery, Green was worried that he would have to give up his newfound passion. This was a fear Womac wouldn’t allow him to have. Not even a month after surgery, Womac moved Green from a recumbent bike to a handcycle that allowed him to still remain active despite his cast. The California native spent 32 years, 20 of which were active-duty, serving in the Army. In July 2011, Trost spent his last deployment in Spin Boldak, Afghanistan. His objective as a civil affairs specialist was to work with the local community in developing infrastructure in the region. On Feb. 20, 2012, he was escorting an aid from the U.S. Agency for International Development when Trost and his team came under fire, killing one U.S. solider and injuring Trost and a fellow corporal. He was medically evacuated to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he spent 10 months receiving 31 surgeries, to repair the injuries of five gunshot wounds to his lower extremities. In 2014, he medically retired from the Army. Due to complications from his combat injuries, in April 2016, Trost made the decision to have a below-the-knee amputation on his right leg and was fitted with a prosthetic. Since retiring from the Army in 2014, Trost has concentrated on his growing farm and has earned a certificate in Brewing Science. His goal is to use the donated backhoe to grow hops to sell to local micro-breweries and home brewers in the Knoxville, Tenn. area. Through A Warrior’s Wish, Masters received $15,000 of support to help fund the film Her Inescapable Brave Mission (HIBM), through his production company Masters Productions. HIBM is a documentary of a 12-day expedition through the Grand Canyon featuring Masters wife, Cara. At just 30 years old Cara was diagnosed with a rare type of muscular dystrophy called Hereditary Inclusion Body Myopathy (HIBM). With John by her side, the film will follow Cara striding on horseback as she descends nearly 6,000 feet into the country’s deepest canyons and continue to follow her as she rafts 150 miles down the Colorado River. SUMMARY: CYPOV Podcast is dedicated to helping Veterans become just as successful out of uniform as they were when they were in. Part of this success depends on how well you assimilate back into society out or the military. This comes in many forms and levels of success for everyone. For many, finding an organization to become a member of helps them regain their sense of worth and purpose again. This week we sit down with Chris Sharon who is the Operating Officer & Senior Director, Transition Services for an amazing Veteran Service Organization called Hope For The Warriors a 501c3 Non Profit. Hope For The Warriors believes that those touched by military service can succeed at home by restoring their sense of self, family, and hope. Nationally, Hope For The Warriors provides comprehensive support programs for service members, veterans, and military families that are focused on transition, health and wellness, peer engagement, and connections to community resources. IN THIS PARTICULAR EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Hope For The Warriors was founded by military families aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, NC in 2006 as they witnessed, firsthand, the effects war impacts on service members and their families. Hope For The Warriors has remained grounded in family values as the organization expands both the span of programs offered and the number of wounded, family members, and families of the fallen assisted. The leadership of the organization remains in the dedicated hands of combat veterans and military family members. Together, our board of directors, staff, and volunteers work tirelessly to serve those who have sacrificed so much. The integrity of our organization is paramount and therefore our representatives are as honorable and noble as our mission and the people we serve.
