What is having it all? Who gets to decide? Should you want to have it all? Can you have it all? Why is this even a question? Living rich, fulfilling lives is a perfectly human desire, yet sometimes depending on the boxes society fits you in, desiring such a goal can seem impossible, selfish, constricting, naive, unrealistic, or like a set trap. Did you know that the term "Woman Computer" was once a job title? Given that March is National Women's History Month, we have set the intention to share accomplishments of dynamic women pioneers across various industries. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, we're focusing on women in STEM and honoring Katherine Johnson. You may know that on February 24, 2020, Katherine Johnson passed away at age 101. She was one of the first African-American graduates at West Virginia University. In 1953, she started working at NASA's precursor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. Johnson joined West Computing, which was a segregated unit of African-American women computers. For her computations on America's first human spaceflight project, Freedom 7, Johnson became the first African-American woman to have her name on a technical paper issued by NASA's Langley Research Center. In 2015, President Barack Obama awarded Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her many contributions to STEM and the country as a whole, despite segregation by racism and sexism. In addition to Suki's tip to ride the wave of market volatility, you'll also hear Coach Colette share a tribute and a personal anecdote about James Lipton. Lipton passed away on March 2, 2020. He was a writer, lyricist, actor, and dean emeritus of the Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University in New York City. If you enjoyed this episode, why not share it on Instagram and tag @Coach_Colette! She’ll be sure to share your comments and big takeaways on her Instagram Stories. Thanks for listening and please make sure to give us a review on iTunes or Spotify or wherever you listen. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/coach-colette/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/coach-colette/support

She is also an Affiliate Scholar, at the Centre for the Study of Cooperatives, at the University of Saskatchewan. After 15 years of careful research, she published "Collective Courage: A History of African American Cooperative Economic Thought and Practice". Her book argues that co-ops not only should be, but have historically been a social justice tool within African American communities. Dr. Gordon Nembhard stated that is very concerned about the lack of succession planning in the African American cooperative communities. During the interview she further notes that, although her research revealed that cooperatives were used as a solution to the community problems that arose in every generation, it was Not usually because the same organizations remained open. That said, during her final comments she states that education is a key factor to ensure that future generations can learn from the advancements of present generation with regards to cooperatives. In the African American cooperative communities we have to pass on the education, documentation and enthusiasm to our next generation to strengthen our communities.

So, we're back this week talking about how Chandler's art reflects the black female intellect and what the intent of the content of pieces like his portrait of Angela Davis as well as every day women portrayed in his "Afrifaces in Your Neighborhood" pieces. Why did Chandler paint these pieces? During this, our final show celebrating women in honor of National Women's History Month, we will discuss how this art is intended to encourage black people to love themselves and, especially, of black women. Called "controversial", a "Black Power Artist", "activist artist" and "Outsider Artist", Chandler, 70, was born in 1941 in Lynn, MA. He is best known for the edgy, colorful, controversial and hotly-debated artistic statements of his 1960’s-1980’s works. Chandler continues to evolve and his views, expressed on this show, provide weekly evidence of his continued development. Also the community-at-large will be educated about sexual abuse so we can react responsibly about the reality of it.
Prof. Chandler has long argued that African American are the least respected, least valued women on the planet. In a society that still touts the Eurocentric ideals of beauty, African American women, including First Lady, Michelle Obama, are thought and even called "ugly". Chandler, however, thinks black women are the most beautiful women in the world and his art reflects that. So, on this episode of our show, continuing our them of celebrating women during National Women's History Month, we will continue to discuss Chandler's love of black women and the ways he empowers them by reflecting thier unique beauty in his works. We will discuss, in particular, his seminal Black on Black for Blacks pieces of rhe 1960s and 1970s (which the Artist reprised in the early 90s). These pieces encourage black people to love themselves. They also promote black love and respect of black women by portraying them positively. As importantly, they depict black women's love of black people and, especially, of black men. The show is co-hosted and produced by Chandler's daughter and artist agent, Dahna M. Chandler, an award-winning former journalist. (c) 2012. The Outsider Artist, LLC and BAPsody in Blue, Inc.
March was National Women's History Month, so of course Gobbledygeek starts April off with a show about...strong women in fiction! Scheduling is our strong suit. Paul and AJ discuss the notion of feminism--spoiler: they are 100% pro-woman, but vague on what the tenets of feminism actually are--and discuss such strong fictional women as Wonder Woman, Ellen Ripley, Dana Scully, and duh, Buffy Summers. Then there's the discussion of Sucker Punch, and yeah...opinions, they differ. Plus: news and upcoming DVD releases. Please check us out at our REAL blog: gobbledygeekbtr.wordpress.com
In honor of Women's History Month, we are posting a series of podcasts about the contributions of women to American history and politics. This week on an extended edition of Radio Journeys, we mark National Women's History Month with a special look at the Boswell Sisters... the innovators of "close harmony" female singing groups, with a sound that sparked a musical genre, and that influences female vocal groups even today. They were sensations on record and on the radio in the 1930s, and we'll hear two rare recordings of syndicated radio shows from April 1930--important historically not only because they are the earliest known recordings of the Boswells on the radio, but because they are some of the earliest known recordings of music produced for the radio. Then, we'll sample some of the Boswell Sisters' other radio appearances, through 1936. Then, it's time for another episode of Ed Wynn in the Texaco Fire Chief, this one from August 30, 1932.It's an eventful hour-plus, rare and historic, this week on Radio Journeys.
