It's been a while, but this is episode number four of the It's a Family Affair episode of the podcast. We're very happy to welcome to the show for the first time, and hopefully not the last, veteran wrestler Pat Rose. We go over a good chunk of Pat's career, starting with Nick Gulas in Chattanooga in 1979, working most of the territories in the 1980s and then retiring in the mid 1990s. Of particular note for us here on this pod is both his time in Southeastern and Continental, teaming with first his boyhood idol Mr. Wrestling II and later Randy Rose as the Rose Cousins and, more importantly, his time in the short-lived independent promotion World Organization Wrestling (WOW). You've heard us talk about WOW here on the pod with Armstrong Alley, who has about 8 months of the promotion on his YouTube channel and on Between the Sheets, when we talked about the week in December 1987 when Nick Gulas showed up on set with Christopher Love (Bert Prentice) and had a showdown with Don Fargo, Ken Timbs and Pat himself. We talk about the promotion's start, who was in charge and a number of the wrestlers who came in and out of the territory, including Bob Sweetan, Bob Holly, Marcel Pringle, Bad Company, Samu and Kokina (Yokozuna) and others. There's also talk about his time in Memphis with Dr. Tom Prichard and Sherri Martel as the Heavenly Bodies, how they got put together, the run's premature end and the “Dear John” letter Pat read on live Memphis TV when Tom and Sherri left the area. We also talk to Pat about working with people like Lord Humongous (Jeff Van Camp), Sid Vicious, the Master of Pain (The Undertaker) and how important it was for guys like him to make those guys look like stars. To wrap up, Pat tells us about his fishing show Set the Hook, how it got started, where you can hear it and also his son's country music career. We had a great time talking to Pat and hopefully he will be back on the show with more stories from his time in the business.
Don Fargo, Rip Tyler and Mike Diamond in “Rip's Corner” from WOW TV. We have our first back to back guest, even though it's been two months and there were also three episodes of the Plot Podcast since then, but we've happy to welcome back Kris P Lettuce (@krisplettuce) from the Armstrong Alley You Tube channel to talk more rediscovered old school wrestling. We start by talking about his upcoming order from his tape source “the Greek” and just what will be on that 100 DVD order, including Windy CIty, WIld Wrestling and wrestling from Montreal and the Maritimes. Then we discuss some of the wrestling on his channel now, including IWA from Nashville, featuring a young Maxx Payne, Texas Championship Wrestling (including the American Ninja, who we discussed last episode) and WOW, World Organization Wrestling. WOW is easily my favorite promotion of the stuff Kris has uploaded, so we spend a good portion of the show talking about some of the better-known names that worked there, including Bob Holly, Pat Tanaka and Paul Diamond, Bob Sweetan, Jerry Stubbs, Kokina (aka Yokozuna) and more. We also mention how many of these promotions in the late 80s and early 90s had a connection to legendary promoter Nick Gulas. Also, coming up this month on the Plot Podcast, look for some vampire-themed shows, as part of When IT Was Cool's Dracula Month. How well do spies and vampires? Tune in and find out.
We're happy to welcome for the first time to the show, Kris P Lettuce (@krisplettuce), the man behind the Armstrong Alley You Tube channel. We discussed the treasure trove of found footage he has been posting on his channel featuring independent wrestling from the 1980s., 1990s and 2000s. First up, we talked about his channel and the origins of all this footage, including a subject we've been talking a lot lately on the show, tape trading. Just how big was the list of footage from which he was choosing? From there, we talk about a number of short-lived promotions, including: Austin Idol's 1993 USA Wrestling, the 1987 Alabama promotion World of Wrestling, the 1990-91 Texas Championship Wrestling, the 1991 Nashville International Wrestling Alliance, the 1990 Arkansas International Pro Wrestling, The 1990-91 North American Wrestling Assocation/South Atlantic Pro Wrestling and more. There's a littany of people we mention here: Idol, Junkyard Dog, the Bullet and the other Armstrongs, Bob Holly, Bill Ash, Stunning Steve Austin, Paul Jones, Robert Fuller, Willie the Wrestling Clown and even Nick Gulas. There's also chat about Southeastern/Continental, missing and found footage, Ron Wright and Ron's Championship Wrestling, wrestling fan subcultures, Kris' new Patreon, wrestling books, what footage he hopes to get next and more. Note: The next episode of The Plot should feature two spy-themed Silver Age comics and should be out in a week or two. Thanks for listening.

Randy Hales is back with the 80th Episode of Memphis Memories Podcast and, as always, he tries to educate you and entertain you with Memphis Wrestling Memories. Our guest is the grandson of Christine Jarrett, Brennon Martin. He is the author of a book that is a tribute to his Grandmother, called Teeny Professional Wrestling's Grand Dame. Hear stories on Christine Jarrett Living a Real Life Rags to Riches Story, stories about Nick Gulas, Roy Welch, Pat Malone, Jerry Jarrett, Koko Ware, Jerry Jarrett, Jeff Jarrett. Eddie Marlin, Vince McMahon and the Death of Kay Fabe and much more. Fantastic show loaded with Memphis Wrestling History.
As a teenager in 1920s Birmingham, Alabama, Nick Gulas left his job at a bakery to learn the ropes (pun intended) of working in the wrestling business. Once he knew a thing or two, he came to Nashville and made both the city and the sport his life for over 40 years. For a good […]
Randy Hales does a huge Q and A podcast. Thanks to all who sent in many great and thought provoking questions. Randy talks about so many great Memphis Memory Questions including who would of replaced Jerry Lawler as top star if Memphis Wrestling was still around, Can Memphis Wrestling Be Revived, How was it to do commentary with Lance and Dave, Best Memories of Eddie Marlin, James wants Juicy Scoops, Rodney Elwood wants to know why Gordon Solie hosted Memphis TV when we still had Lance and Dave, Mark wanted to know about when Robert Fuller did a heavy interview with Nick Gulas, Adan Parson wants to know why Robert Fuller left in 1979 and took his crew with him. What did cit take to put Monday Night Memories Together, how long did Tommy Rich hide under cage, questions from London, Paris and much more.
First off, condolences to the friends and family of Scott Bowden, who died earlier this week. We had been talking to Scott the last couple weeks about returning to the podcast to talk Memphis wrestling and even were Tweeting with him a few days ago. On the show we are finally to nabbed The King of Kingsport Beau James (@kingofkingsport) to be on the show. We start by remembering Scott, as Beau had just done his Kentucky Fried Rasslin' podcast not that long ago. As one of the foremost experts on East Tennessee wrestling, we pick Beau's brain on all things about the Knoxville/Southeastern/Continental/USA territory, so plenty of stories about Ron and Don Wright, Whitey Caldwell, Les Thatcher, Ron and Robert Fuller,, Jimmy Golden, Ron Garvin and many more folks. We also talk about Memphis, including the angle (see below) when Robert Fuller brought back Nick Gulas to do an angle about the control of the promotion. There's way too many stories to listen here, including Beau's long friendships with Buddy Landell and Jimmy Valiant, starting in the business at 16 years old, indy wrestling horror stories and so much more. Easily one of my favorites podcasts, as Beau is a master storyteller. If you want more, be sure to check out his new Patreon and his King of Kingsport website.
Kris & David are joined by Beau James (@KingofKingsport) to discuss the week-plus that was March 21-31, 1986. We talk about Joe "Nighthawk" Coltrane entering JCP, as well as the major heel turn by Pistol Pez Whatley on Jimmy Valiant, which sparked some of the best promo work of both guys' careers. Beau also tells a great Paul Jones Army story that can't be missed. We also talk about Ric Flair getting Ricky Morton a training bra, the Freebirds raising hell in Montreal of all places, the birth of the Universal Wrestling Federation, Dave Meltzer disparaging Waylon Jennings, Roddy Piper getting really involved in his boxing training for WrestleMania 2, and so much more. And, of course, this week also features one of the greatest segments in Memphis history: Yes, we talk about THE BILL & BUDDY SHOW!!!!!Timestamps:0:00:00 Jim Crockett Promotions2:16:04 Int’l: AJPW, NJPW, International (Montreal), Stampede, Torreon, UWA, & Tijuana2:49:41 Halftime-ish2:50:28 USA East: ICW, CWF, CCW, Nick Gulas, & CWA/Memphis4:39:17 USA West: UWF, Houston, WCCW, TASW, Central States, AWA, PPCW, & Portland6:07:34 WWFTo support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron. Jonathan Hood reflects on the passing of Memphis/NWA wrestling legend, Eddie Marlin. You will hear from his dear friend, Randy Hales, longtime Memphis wrestling promoter, Jim Cornette, pro wrestling manager/promoter/podcaster and more. One of the greatest babyfaces in the history of Tennessee wrestling, Eddie Marlin, died today, just days after his 89th birthday. He was one of the few to say that he sold out the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis -- and in the match, he and Al Greene essentially worked a front facelock for 55 minutes. Marlin described the sellout bout a few years back on an podcast of Booking Memphis Wrestling with Jerry Jarrett. "I was in there with Al and and Al got a front facelock on me, and somehow, one way or another, when he did, I bit my lip and it started bleeding, bleeding pretty good. And the people thought that from that front facelock that it was coming from my throat -- and I mean, them people, they really, really got feeling sorry for me," recalled Marlin. "And we worked that front facelock, it seemed like forever, because the people just kept standing and standing and standing, and finally he backed me into the corner, and when he stepped back, I fell down and that was our call then, a small package, or jackknife, and I pinned him one, two three, and that Coliseum went wild along with me." Jarrett, who was Marlin's son-in-law, raved about the bout. "Eddie and Al were so good that they worked one hold for about 55 minutes. I was afraid the time limit was going to run out on them because we set it up that Al would give Eddie a pretty good beating and Eddie would sneak a win in. It was just an amazing match to me, that somebody could keep the fans' interest for 55 minutes, with one hold. It was amazing." It worked because the fans believed in Marlin, who was not huge, at roughly 6-foot, 200 pounds, and wasn't in especially awe-inspiring shape. "Eddie was a really, really good babyface. The fans loved him and took to him, whatever situation you put him in," said Jarrett. And there was little ego there either, even if Billy Spears once spray-painted "Big Shot" on Marlin's car. Eddie Marlin was born August 13, 1930, to Eddie and Annie Mai Marlin, in Nashville. His siblings included sisters Anna and Peggy, and a brother, Thomas, who also got into the wrestling business. In a 1979 interview in the TNT Power newsletter published by Terry Justice, Marlin recalled breaking into the business in the early 1950s. "The way I got started, I was working in Nashville and met some wrestlers at the 'Y' and worked out with them. One night [promoter[ Nick Gulas was running a spot show in Alabama and one of the wrestlers didn't show up, so I took his place. I had been going to matches all my life," he explained. The legendary Jackie Fargo saw something in Marlin. Early in his career, Marlin lost to Fargo, and Fargo called promoter Nick Gulas and said, "Eddie's a pretty good hand. Why don't you help him out some?" Much of Marlin's success came in tag teams, and he won belts in Arkansas and Kentucky, as well as his home state. Loser Leaves Town 9/7/10 w/ Colt Cabana on the Observer HOF Colt Cabana returns to discuss his ballot for the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame. A fun show as always w/ Cabana, as he discusses his reasoning for his picks as well as his other projects including his own podcast and his comedy. As usual, other fun topics come up as well. Check out his podcast, his store, and his Twitter account for more fun from the world of Colt Cabana, and remember to check out Cageside Seats for my daily writings on the pro graps and the occasional Cageside Radio podcast, including my interview with Frank Shamrock. Download it here. Loser Leaves Town Podcast 1/10/10 w/ Ross Hart The foremost historian on all things Hart family and Stampede Wrestling, former program seller/TV producer/booker/wrestler/TV interviewer Ross Hart joins me for a fun look at everybody’s favorite prairie territory. We talk about his first memories of wrestling, producing the TV show, Stampede leaving the NWA, the British and Japanese wrestlers who went through Stampede, wrestling in Hungary and England, the origins of the ladder match, and much more. A really good show. Download it here. Loser Leaves Town Podcast 12/5/09 w/ Dave Walsh: Discussion of Umaga’s death, Gail Gagne’s criminal charges, and more Dave Walsh of Cageside Seats and Head Kick Legend joins me to discuss the big news items from this past week and much more. We talk about the death of Umaga and related topics including drugs in wrestling and how the decline in Japan has hurt American wrestlers, Gail Gagne’s arrest for allegedly having sex with a student at the school she worked at, and other stuff including Shane McMahon and Mark Cuban: Raw Guest Host. Download it here. Loser Leaves Town Podcast 10/29/09 w/ Bill Dundee Memphis legend “Superstar” Bill Dundee oins me to discuss his career including his various booking jobs, pushing younger wrestlers, various Memphis-related topics, working for the Cole Brothers Circus, his wrestling school, and much more. Definitely worth a listen if you’re a fan of Memphis and/or Mid-South. You can email Bill via his website if you’re interested in wrestling training or the circus. Download it here. Loser Leaves Town Podcast 10/14/09 w/ Colt Cabana & Rob Naylor on midget wrestling I’m joined by Rob Naylor and Colt Cabana as we discuss midget wrestling throughout history. Lots of fun stuff including whether or not it’s okay to find midgets adorable, Cabana on his love of using comedy spots borrowed from midgets, Little Beaver’s appearance in Meatballs III, Billy Barty and Lou Albano in Bodyslam, a green Cabana missing his shot at being (a) Doink, Ninja Turtles, Roger Ebert’s dirty mind, and much more. An action packed 80 minutes! Download it here. Loser Leaves Town Podcast 9/21/09 - Live at Lucha Va Voom w/ T.J. Perkins and Cassandro! Recorded last night at Lucha Va Voom’s successful New York debut, it’s the Loser Leaves Town Podcast. First I’m joined by T.J. Perkins (AKA Pinoy Boy/Puma/Cobra II, currently El Bombero in Lucha Va Voom) to discuss his travels around the world as a 25 year-old who’s a 10 year veteran. Lots of great stuff about going to New Japan and the LA Dojo including wrestling in the Tokyo Dome, the MMA training that led to him actually having fights, becoming Cobra II while being tempted with promises of maybe eventually being Tiger Mask V, and much more. After that is Cassandro, the top exotico in wrestling today. A 21 year veteran, he talks about his pre-wrestling career as a medical assistant, being trained by Rey Misterio Sr. in the class that included the original Psicosis/Nicho and a very young Rey Mysterio (Jr.), wrestling in Juarez and El Paso, being a gay man in the wrestling business in Mexico, how Antonio Peña helped him and others, his current travels around the world (including wrestling El Hijo del Santo at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France!), and more. All in all, a very fun hour of interviews. Download it here. Loser Leaves Town Podcast 9/6/09 w/ Kurt Brown: Observer Hall of Fame 2009 Part 2 It’s time for the sequel to Friday’s show with Kurt Brown (seen above as Lucky Pierre) about everyone on the 2009 Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame ballot. From Rick Rude to Tim Woods and then the “non-wrestler” candidates from Albano to Ventura, it’s another 2 hours of fun. If you liked the last show, this is more of the same with a wealth of information and stories from Kurt’s mental compendium of pro graps history and oddities. Download it here. Loser Leaves Town Podcast 9/4/09 w/ Kurt Brown: Observer Hall of Fame 2009 Part 1 I’m joined by Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame voter, wrestler/historian/reporter/etc Kurt Brown (being bitten in the above photograph by El Fisico Nuclear) to discuss the every single act on the ballot (in alphabetical order) for the 2009 Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame voting. This is a task so huge that it must be divided into two parts, two hours each (yes, it’s long!). In part 1, we cover everyone on the ballot from the Andersons to the Rock ‘n’ Roll Express, with tons of sidetracking to other topics such as The Monster, Lars Anderson’s cyborg gimmick, and much more. I learned a ton from throwing names at Kurt’s psychedelic wrestling brain and you will, too. A great, great show. Part 2 of this Labor Day weekend spectacular will be posted on Sunday or Monday. Download it here. Loser Leaves Town Podcast 8/28/09 w/ Rob Naylor: IWA Mid-South memories and Russians Rob Naylor finally rejoins me as we get back into the groove with the first Loser Leaves Town Podcast to be part of Cageside Seats (which is my main outlet now, but this site is staying put to make things easier for iTunes users and the like), part of the SB Nation network of blogs. In the sequel to our popular Pacific Islanders show, we discuss the many Russians throughout the years in pro wrestling on top of our favorite memories of IWA Mid-South. Learn which Russians were real (not a lot…at all), listen to us debate the merits of Nikolai Volkoff, be amazed at the match we suggested to IWA that they didn’t book because they thought it wouldn’t draw for some reason, and much more. Over 2 hours(!!! - It’s not like you have to listen to it all in one sitting) of heart-stopping action and the usual fun that results from putting me and Rob together. Download it here. Loser Leaves Town Podcast 11/26/08 w/ CM Punk & Rob Naylor Rob Naylor co-hosts a Thanksgiving weekend spectacular where we interview one of of the World Tag Team Champions, former World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk! A great show (with them carrying me at times) where Punk discusses his past as an independent wrestler, his matches with John Morrison, burying the hatchet with Teddy Hart, having a bunch of merchandise, and much more, including a hilarious Tony Garea story that includes a fine vocal impersonation. Plus, Punk hands the phone to his good friend François Kevorkian (who may or may not be the same one who mixed for Depeche Mode) for a fascinating and enlightening discussion. Almost 80 minutes of the most (self?-)important Loser Leaves Town Podcast EVER! Download it here. Loser Leaves Town Podcast 10/29/08 w/ Rob Naylor on SAMOANS! and other Pacific Islanders After a fricking year, the show is back in style as Rob Naylor joins me to discuss wrestlers from Samoa and other Pacific Islands for over TWO HOURS! Yes. Consider it two shows or something. Naylor thought two hours or less would be too short for a topic like this. The usual fun with Naylor includes the two of us doing a reading of a legendary Jimmy Snuka promo, why Tama was so awesome, Samoan farmers, and the usual tangents that stray far from the topic. Plus, a brief special bonus where my upstairs neighbors make lots of noise and people yell at them (really)! A good show full of wacky Naylor fun. Special thanks to: Online World of Wrestling for making this show so much easier and if you want to hear more Rob Naylor, keep checking this site out as well as the archives of the late, great Joe Versus The World and The Dr. Keith Show at F4WOnline/FigureFourOnline/WrestlingObserver.com Download it here. Over 70 minutes long and well worth listening to. Download it here. Loser Leaves Town Podcast 8/5/07 w/ Dutch Savage Northwestern wrestling legend Dutch Savage joins me to discuss his career, with topics including how he broke in, bad payoffs from Nick Gulas and others, the creation of his specialty: the Coal Miner’s Glove Match, working with NWA World Champions, why he left the business, and more. A fun-filled and informative 36 minute interview. Download it here. The Bixenspan Group 7/1/07 I’m joined by Dave Walsh, Steven Louis Lerner, and Andrew J. Wallace as we discuss the wrestling business driving people insane/insane people going into the wrestling business, why you should all watch AAA, Marvin the Baby, Japanese wrestling in 2007 and its western fans, the how the WON awards are shaping up, Edge being awesome, Batista’s turtleneck, and more. An hour and forty-four minutes(!) of exciting wrestling chat. Much better than last time as there’s a format and good discussion and everything. Download it here. The Bixenspan Group 6/17/07 My latest bad idea: A roundtable show. Fun though disjointed as it was done on short notice and there are TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES that include the show ending suddenly right as we were about to finish up. Panelists Dave Walsh (until his phone dies), Steven Louis Lerner, and Brian W. Tosh discuss Vince McMahon and his untimely death, the draft, Bob Backlund’s cardboard belt, & more. Next week will be tighter, I swear. Download it here. Loser Leaves Town Podcast 2/18/07 w/ J.J. Dillon J.J. Dillon joins me to discuss his book, Dick Murdoch and his punches, the most important aspects of booking, booking a territory vs booking the (inter)nationally expanded WWF, the business model of Grand Prix in the Maritimes, wrestling El Santo, and much, much more.
