Brian Mistro is our guest for this episode. Mistro just completed his sixth season as the head football coach at National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II member University of Jamestown in Jamestown, North Dakota. The Gilbert, Arizona native came to Jamestown as a football student-athlete in 2005 and played his first three seasons for Coach Tom Dosch and his senior season for Coach Bud Etzold. During his four years as a Jimmie student-athlete, Jamestown posted a combined record of 27-15. He was a two-year starter at safety for the Jimmies and served as team captain while earning All-Conference honors his senior year. Mistro was part of Jimmie teams that advanced to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) playoffs in both 2006 and 2007. After graduation, Mistro joined Dosch's staff at NCAA Division II Northern State (SD) as a graduate assistant and joined the staff at NCAA Division III Concordia College (MN) after earning his graduate degree. Mistro graduated from Jamestown College in 2009 with a degree in Communications with a Media concentration. He earned a Master of Science degree from Northern State in Education, Teaching, and Learning with an emphasis in Health, PE, and Coaching in May 2012. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Leadership degree at University of Jamestown. Brian and his wife Meaghan have three sons, A.J., Nolan, and Jack. Katelyn Schroeder was nominated as a Beck's Player with Heart for her commitment and passion on and off the court. The things she loves most about high school sports are the deep connections and life lessons that she has learned from participating. Sports have taught her to manage her time and stay organized as well as how to be a leader and create connections with people to work as a team. Episode 158 - Freedom's Path, The Story of Salem Chapel and the Underground RailroadDo you have a significant historical landmark in your community - have you spent time there? Well I did. I spent time at the last stop of the Underground Railroad, where black slaves seeking freedom found community, safety and the true freedom they desired. I had the honour to sit in this small chapel and to let the walls and the wood pews tell me about the history of this lighthouse of freedom.WELCOME TO THE SALEM CHAPEL SANCTUARY OF HISTORY​People of African descent began settling in the St. Catharines, Ontario area around 1788 and they brought their religion with them. Many were followers of Rev. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. Wesley was a staunch abolitionist and advocated for the end of slavery and the slave trade.​Many of the freedom seekers that relocated to this area were also followers of Bishop Richard Allen, the founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC).An AMEC Society was established in St. Catharines, Ontario between 1814 and 1820. A small chapel was built to serve the faithful in the Queenston Street area. When construction on the first Welland Canal began (1824-1829) in their neighbourhood, members of the Black community relocated to the under developed area of Geneva and North Streets. In 1835, they purchased property on North Street from abolitionist businessmen William Hamilton Merritt and Oliver Phelps to build a new AMEC. This church would be the second in St. Catharines and it would hold about 70 members.In 1837, the St. Catharines group sent a petition to the AMEC New York Conference asking for pastoral care and to be received into the AMEC Connection. As a result of this action, AMEC missionaries stationed in Upper Canada were instructed to "regulate the existing Societies, organize more in other regions and also communicate that they shall be subject to the order of the Bishops, and amendable to the Annual Conference of the New York District." One year later, the New York AMEC Conference organized a church in St. Catharines with forty members and two local preachers. The church was named Bethel Chapel.In less than a generation this Methodist group would out grow the second church. The Black community inSt. Catharines began to increase immediately after the US Congress passed the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act. Thousands of free and escaped African Americans living in the Northern States moved to various parts of Canada West to secure their safety and freedom. The new fugitive slave laws also caused thousands of fleeing enslaved African Americans to settle in Canada.In order to accommodate the influx of new comers, the AMEC congregation in St. Catharines decided to build a larger church. Resident freedom seekers began to construct the third church in October 1853. On November 4, 1855 the new AMEC was opened and publicly "dedicated to the Service of Almighty God" by Bishop Daniel Alexander Payne. In less than one year (September 1856), most of the Canadian AME Churches would separate from the AMEC Conference in the US and establish the British Methodist Episcopal Church (BMEC). This was partly due to the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act. Most of the AME Church members in Canada refused to attend Conference in the US because of the fugitive slave laws. They also wanted to identify themselves more closely with the country that granted them their freedom and equal rights. As a Methodist meeting house, from its early beginnings the AMEC in St. Catharines hosted anti-slavery lectures, civic protests and provided shelter and aid to the newly arrived freedom seekers until the end of the Civil War. Garrett Campbell was hired full-time as an assistant coach in 2016. He officially became the FC head football coach in 2019. Coach Campbell is no stranger to Fullerton College as his father, Dick Campbell, was on the Hornet coaching staff for 15 seasons during the Hal Sherbeck years. As a young boy, Garrett served as Fullerton's ball boy and then later grew to become a quarterback and wide receiver for the Hornets from 1995-96. In 2022, Campbell led the Hornets all the way to the SCFA championship game along with winnng the program's 27th conference title going 5-0 and 9-1 overall. The Hornets finished 3rd overall the state's final 3C2A rankings. Coach Campbell wrapped up the 2023 season with another conference title going an undefeated 7-0 in the SCFA Southern conference with a 10-1 overall record. Fullerton ranked No. 1 at the end of the season by the November 13th JCAB poll. Born and raised in southern California Campbell, earned his bachelor's degree at nearby California State Fullerton in 1998. He then went on to earn his master's degree at Northern State University in 2002. Campbell got his start in coaching at Fullerton College in 1998 and has since coached at Northern State, Willamette University, Menlo College and Carthage College and Illinois College. Prior to joining the Hornet coaching staff, Campbell was the head coach of the Illinois College football team for eight seasons. He posted an overall record of 51-30 and led the 2011 Blueboys to their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III football playoffs. Campbell has coached 75 all-conference selections and 209 academic all-conference selections, while guiding an offense that has consistently ranked among the best in NCAA Division III. From 2011 to 2013, Campbell's offense was ranked #8 out of 241 teams. In 2014 and 2015 they were ranked #9 and #10. In 2014, Campbell was voted the Midwest Conference Southern Division Coach of the Year leading the Blueboys to the 2014 MWC Southern Division Title. Twas a backyard brawl on Thursday night. I took in some high school wrestling as I watched Mounds View High School dispatch with Irondale … which are the two high schools in my school district. One is known as the sports school, the other is the band and robotics school. The sports school won 60-6. By the way, former Gopher Marty Morgan's youngest son is a 215-pounder for Mounds View and he's freaking HUGE. He's headed to South Dakota State. I was spotted in the crowd by one Mounds View parent. Was great to just watch some pretty good high school wrestling without actually working. There's some great HS wrestling kicking off today at the Walsh Ironman. On to the scores on the college scene from Thursday. Only D1 dual of the night, Michigan State improved to 4-0 after a 25-9 win over Buffalo ON THE STAGE up in New York. Buffalo did one of those theatre-style duals for the third year in a row. If you look at the dual, this one was probably closer than the score indicates as Michigan State picked up three victories that were two points or less. Still been a rough start for Buffalo this year. In Division II, Augustana (S.D.) knocked off 13th-ranked Northern State 21-13 out in the middle of South Dakota. The Vikings were ranked 18th in the most recent NWCA rankings, which is a tournament points ranking rather than a dual ranking. Augie's top-ranked Jaxson Rohman earned a major at 125 pounds, while top-ranked Wyatt Turnquist won 7-2 at 149 pounds for Northern State. Out west, San Francisco State shutout Simpson (Calif.) 41-0. In D3, second-ranked Wartburg rolled past the only non-Iowa team in the American Rivers Conference, which used to be the Iowa Conference. The Knights had five falls, the fastest coming at 197 pounds by top-ranked Mo Endene, the returning D3 champion at the weight in the 54-0 win. Third-ranked UW-Eau Claire rallied from down 14-3 after five weights and reeled off five straight W's to oust rival UW-Whitewater 25-14. Whitewater did pick up the dual's most notable win as ninth-ranked Dominick Mallinder bounced top-ranked Tyler Fleetwood 7-1 at 133 pounds. 20th-ranked Millikin topped Aurora 23-17. Bonus points were the difference for the Big Blue as three of the wins were bonus victories including falls by Coby Haney at 133 and Nathan Callaway at 157. Also in the CCIW, Elmhurst edged Concordia Wisconsin 24-23. Roanoke beat Shenandoah 43-4 out in my home state of Virginia. Three bonus victories were the difference for Loras as they topped Cornell College 21-19 in a matchup of Iowa schools. In the NAIA, Montana State-Northern rallied to beat Dickinson State 32-16, while No. 11 Providence (Mont.) beat Eastern Oregon 28-15. Top-ranked Hunter Sparks of Eastern Oregon got a fall in that one at 125 pounds. The Evergreen State College earned its first win, topping Grays Harbor College 50-3. Evergreen's mascot? The GEODUCKS. What is a Geoduck? Well, it's the largest burrowing clam in the world, native to the coastal waters of the Pacific. Makes sense, Evergreen is in Washington. Grays Harbor is too, just a mile or two from the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah. Some of you will get the reference. On the women's side, fourth ranked Colorado Mesa torched Texas Woman's University 44-5, and Adams State 45-4. UW-Stevens Point topped Wartburg 30-13 in the first home dual in school history for the new women's program at Wartburg. Minot State was a winner over Dakota Wesleyan 27-16. It's time for Short Time Shots, a quick look at the day in college wrestling. The only Division I dual of the night saw the Roger Kish era begin in his home state as the Oklahoma Sooners topped Central Michigan 29-11 in Mount Pleasant. Kish, a four-time state champion from Lapeer West saw a wave of transfers impact the victory, including All-American Stephen Buchanan at 197 pounds. Other new faces to earn wins were Jace Koelzer at 133 pounds, Cael Carlson at 165 pounds and Giuseppe Hoose at 184. The Chippewas did get solid victories from Corbyn Munson at 149, Johnny Lovett at 157 and one of the last of the Monarch Gang, Alex Cramer at 174. In Division II, top-ranked Lander shutout Limestone 48-0 in Greenwood, South Carolina on Thursday. In case you hadn't been paying attention, R.C. LaHaye has assembled a pretty formidable squad with the Lander Bearcats. All-Americans James Joplin, David Hunsberger and Juan Edmond-Holmes. Second-ranked West Liberty was also in action. The Hilltoppers got a scare from Mercyhurst as falls by top-ranked Ty McGeary at 184 and fourth-ranked Francesco Borsellino at 285 pushed West Liberty past the Lakers 24-20 in Erie. No, that's not a dig on Otero, just a nod to Mines' coach Austin DeVoe. In Division III, Fifth-ranked UW-La Crosse blanked UW-Oshkosh 59-0. The math says six falls, three forfeits and a technical fall. That's former Fargo champ Ben Kawczynski with the tech at 197, by the way. Cornell College dominated NAIA St. Ambrose 45-5. Elmhurst and Coach Steve Marianetti beat Augustana, the one in Illinois, 26-22. The Blue Jays got a win at heavyweight to pull that one out. Tenth-ranked Wabash topped Albion 25-10. All-American Charles Baczek earned a 3-0 victory over Owen McDaniel at 184 pounds. It's the Little Giants first dual win under new head coach Jake Fredericksen, who assumed the role after longtime coach Brian Anderson left for a gig at Indiana University. No. 12 Stevens Institute made the trip to Wisconsin and took down 8th-ranked UW-Eau Claire 19-16 down in La Crosse. This one hand a handful of ranked matchups, highlighted by a pair of All-Americans meeting at 174 pounds. Second-ranked Jared Stricker topped fourth-ranked Stefan Major 10-7 at 174 pounds. At 133, Eau Claire's top-ranked Tyler Fleetwood shutout 12th-ranked Luke Hoerle 5-0 and at 165, 15th-ranked Harrison Hinojosa of Stevens knocked off seventh-ranked Travis Massie 4-1 in sudden victory. In the CCIW, Carthage topped Concordia, the one in Wisconsin, 25-20. In case you're wondering, Carthage is also in Wisconsin. Kenosha to be exact. Seventh-ranked North Central beat Wheaton 47-6 for the program's 40th conference win in a row. In the NAIA, Southeastern, in Florida, picked up a 32-10 victory over the Bobcats of St. Thomas, which is also in Florida. You might remember the logo from that dude's shirt who won Big Brother. You know, the guy who paraded around the house banging pans. Yeah, that guy sucked. As far as people who don't suck, All-Americans Andreus Bond Gabe Jacobs were among the notable winners for the FIRE! FIRE! Speaking of things that are red, the Red Raiders of Northwestern College, the one in Iowa, beat the Beavers of Buena Vista 32-12. Rik Dahl, we say it almost every mention, they're the RED Raiders from Orange City, Iowa. This dual featured FIVE technical falls. I think the kids are liking the new takedown and nearfall rules. Lourdes beat Siena Heights 45-6. Graceland beat St. Mary 25-23. Southeast Community College, which is in Nebraska, beat Northeastern Junior College, which is in Colorado, 39-9 in junior college action. Not too much happening on the women's mats, but Alma College in Michigan hosted its first event as a new women's wrestling program. It didn't go the Scots way as they dropped matches to Northern Michigan 38-5 and Trine 29-20. Northern Michigan beat Trine 34-10. McKendree, ranked third among NCAA women's teams, topped Missouri Baptist, the 10th-ranked NAIA squad, 34-14. McKendree's Shelby Moore topped NAIA All-American Juliana Diaz 8-3 at 123 pounds. Emory & Henry beat Southern Virginia 31-19 and Bluefield State 38-11.

Here's the good stuff for Wednesday, October 25.-In Albania at the U23 World Championships, the United States has secured more than one U23 World Champion in men's freestyle wrestling for the first time. Keegan O'Toole, Aaron Brooks, and Wyatt Hendrickson came away with gold medals for Team USA.O'Toole, a two-time age-group World Champion, defeated Imam Ganishov in the finals at 74 kg. Brooks dominated his finals match at 86 kg, winning by a 10-0 technical fall. Hendrickson bested Adil Misirci of Turkiye in the finals at 125 kg, securing a 13-3 technical fall. Additionally, Jacob Cardenas won a bronze medal, making the United States four-for-four in medal matches.The second group of men's freestyle athletes also had a strong showing. Isaac Trumble advanced to the finals at 97 kg, Doug Zapf earned a spot in the bronze medal match, and both Cooper Flynn and Brock Hardy are in repechage. Trumble will face Radu Lefter of Moldova in the finals, while Zapf will wrestle for a bronze medal after going 3-1 on the day.The United States begins women's freestyle action in Albania on Wednesday. The first five weights to be contested are 50, 55, 59, 68 and 76 kilograms. Action begins with repechage for men's freestyle and qualification rounds for women's freestyle.-The Division II Coaches Association has announced the induction of seven new members into the Jim Cook Division II Hall of Fame as part of its 2024 class. The inductees include John Davis, Donovan McMahill, Matt Meuleners, Mario Morgan, Josh Shields, Roger Singleton, and William Smith. These athletes collectively boast an impressive record, including 10 Division II National Championships, 17 trips to the NCAA Division II National Finals, and 24 total NCAA Division II All-American finishes. As a young man, the Lakota sage, John Fire Lame Deer, guided him through his first peyote ceremony and then sent him south to Mexico in search of the steps of the Ghost Dance. A lost ritual of early humanity.. These steps led Michael to the Sierra Mazateca of Oaxaca, famous for its sacred mushrooms. From the 1960s through the 1970s, Ani lived in the Mazateca's most remote cloud forest and became the only outsider who was ever allowed to collect the sacred mushroom species of the region. During the 1980s, the steps of the Ghost Dance led Ani to the remote tribes of the Amazon Jungle. With his Amazonia Foundation, Michael was instrumental in fighting the epidemics among the Yanomami in the rainforests of Venezuela. His work in Venezuela was subsequently featured in the 1994 documentary, Yanomami, Keepers of the Flame, which won the US Environmental Film Festival's Best Documentary of the Year. Dedicated to helping the Yanomami survive the epidemics, Ani would periodically leave the jungle to raise money to support the medical effort. In this time he took on many different careers. He became an author, producer, university lecturer, and radio and TV guest speaker. During the early years of the 2000s, Ani focused his attention back on the Northern States of the Americas and worked to repatriate some of the very last genetically pure Bison to the Brule, Lakota tribes on the Rosebud reservation in South Dakota. While on Rosebud, Ani responded to the requests of tribal elder Leonard Crow Dog and brought an eyeglass clinic to the reservation. Because of his efforts in South America and Mexico, and his work to build a ceremony house for the renowned healer, Grandpa Roy Stone, the Amazonia Foundation was honored by being included as an organization under the umbrella of the National Congress of American Indians. Michael Stuart Ani joins us for Season 1 (2021) of Birdsong. Michael has been a student of plant wisdom for fifty years. As a young man, the Lakota sage, John Fire Lame Deer, guided Michael through his first peyote ceremony and then sent him south to Mexico in search of the steps of the Ghost Dance. Keepers of the Flame also became the feature film at the 1994 Brazilian Earth Summit. In 2002, Ani focused his attention back on the Northern States of the Americas and worked to restore some of the very last genetically pure Bison to the Brule, Lakota tribes on the Rosebud reservation in South Dakota. Dakota Lindwurm played hockey every free moment she had as a kid and dreamed of becoming a professional goalie. When her mom worried she was getting a little too obsessed, she told her she needed to add another sport for balance. Dakotah managed to rock the Macarena at mile 24 of Grandma's Marathon 2022 while defending her title and running 2:25:01—the 12th fastest women's American marathon time ever! Dakotah was a walk-on at Northern State where she had to convince her coach, Kevin Bjerke, to take a chance on her before becoming a 2X D2 All-American. He became her biggest advocate, helped her to dream big, and convinced her she could make the Olympic Trials as a marathoner. Next, Dakotah connected with Minnesota Distance Elite Team and current coach, Chris Lundstrum, who is now working with her to chase down even bigger dreams.
