Helene delivered statewide impacts from Miami to Apalachicola. In a state littered with historic Hurricanes, this one has made immediate and unfortunate history. We discuss this unfolding historical event in this emergency podcast.

Tropical Storm Helene forecast to become a hurricane today as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico • Tropical Storm Helene is looking "healthier" this morning as it makes its closet approach to the Yucatan Peninsula. • Steady intensification is forecast over the next 12 hours, with more rapid intensification possible beyond that into Thursday. • The forecast continues to call for a major hurricane to landfall in between Apalachicola and Cedar Key late Thursday. Shifts are possible and impacts will occur far from the landfall point due to the expected large size of the storm. • A track closer to, or even east of, Cedar Key would heighten our local impacts. A track closer to Apalachicola would lessen them quite dramatically. • Timeline based on the current forecast: o Wednesday: Increasing clouds and slowly increasing winds becoming breezy at the beaches by the afternoon. A few showers with gusty winds will be possible in the afternoon/evening. o Wednesday Night/Thursday Morning: Cloudy and windy, with rain bands lifting from south to north. These will have the potential to produce isolated tornadoes/waterspouts. o Mid-Day Thursday: Still cloudy and windy, but there could be a sizable break in the rain. o Thursday Afternoon/Evening: More rain bands pivot in around the storm. These will contain an even greater risk for tornadoes and water spouts, and some tropical storm force wind gusts. o Thursday Night: Helene makes landfall between 8 and 10 pm with the core of the storm pushing hurricane conditions inland to Columbia County (Lake City) and perhaps as far inland as Waycross in gusts. o Friday Morning: A few wrap-around gusty showers, but rapidly improving weather by late-morning into the afternoon. • Minor to moderate flooding will be possible Thursday evening and overnight along the St. Johns River, its tributaries, and coastal areas prone to flooding. Some minor storm surge will be possible along the NE FL coast during a period of onshore winds. Slightly higher surge is possible across the SE GA coastline. • So overall, manageable impacts across our metro with sporadic tree and power issues. Minimal flooding threat. Greater impact inland closer to the core of the storm. Magnitude of impacts still track-dependent. TODAY: Becoming mostly cloudy and breezy. Showers arrive late in the afternoon and evening. High: 88 TONIGHT: Cloudy with a swath of rain moving in. Winds begin to increase a bit at the coast. LOW: 75 THURSDAY: First Alert Weather Day. Tracking Helene. Cloudy and humid with rain and wind. Isolated tornadoes possible. 75/85 FRIDAY: Helene quickly moves away as we see decreasing clouds with a few breezy showers/storms. 75/88 SATURDAY: Partly sunny with a few showers. 75/89 SUNDAY: Partly sunny with a few showers. 72/86 MONDAY: Partly to mostly cloudy with a few showers. 73/86 TUESDAY: Partly sunny with a few showers. 70/86

The Buresh Daily Discussion

Tropical disturbance getting better organized in the Western Caribbean Sea, Local Impacts Wednesday night into Thursday • Thunderstorms have increased around the center of the tropical disturbance overnight. • A tropical storm will likely form this morning or later today in the Western Caribbean Sea. • Forecasts currently develop this into a "major" hurricane on approach to the northeast Gulf Coast by Thursday afternoon/evening. Conditions are favorable for strengthening. • As of now, the favored area for a potential landfall would be in between Apalachicola and Cedar Key late Thursday. Shifts are possible and impacts will occur far from the landfall point, especially east of it. • The wind field with this hurricane will be expansive. Do not focus just on the center. • A track closer to, or even east of, Cedar Key would heighten our local impacts. A track closer to Apalachicola would lessen them quite dramatically. • Based on the current forecast: o Late Wednesday: We can expect rain bands to lift across our area in the late afternoon through the night. They'll contain quick-hitting heavy rain, gusty winds, and the potential for isolated tornadoes/waterspouts. o Into Thursday: Rain and wind impacts would increase the farther west one goes, currently expected to be most significant between Lake City and Waycross. Hurricane conditions will be possible there, with intermittent tropical storm conditions possible elsewhere. Saturated grounds from early September rain may make older trees more susceptible to falling. o Very hazardous beach conditions are expected, with high surf, rip currents, and likely some beach erosion, especially during the higher-than-normal king tides. o Minor to moderate flooding expected Thursday evening and Friday morning along the St. Johns River, its tributaries, and coastal areas prone to flooding. o Into Friday mid-day Friday: Conditions area-wide should quickly improve as the storm pulls inland, perhaps causing significant damage as far north as Atlanta. o Wind speeds, surge height and rain totals are highly dependent on the exact track of "Helene." o Sustained winds could be at or near tropical storm force at our local beaches Thursday afternoon/evening, especially in gusts. o Wind gusts will be 50-70+ mph with the current forecast. Higher gusts are likely closer to I-75 and offshore from the NE Florida coastline. o At least some storm surge is likely along the NE Florida coastline with the onshore winds. • Tropical storm watches are in effect for SW Florida and the Keys. • Expect hurricane and storm surge watches to be extended north to include parts of the Central and NE Gulf Coast this morning. • Latest “Talking the Tropics with Mike”, updated daily. Reminder for the newsroom: • Full updates with a new track are at 5 AM / 11 AM / 5 PM / 11 PM • Intensity and position updates (no new track) are at 2 AM / 8 AM / 2 PM / 8 PM. TODAY: Mostly sunny. HIGH: 91 TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Low: 72 WEDNESDAY: Becoming mostly cloudy and breezy. Showers late. 72/88 THURSDAY: First Alert Weather Day: Tracking the tropics. Cloudy and humid with rain and wind. Isolated tornadoes possible. 75/85 FRIDAY: Helene moving quickly north. Decreasing clouds with a few showers/storms. 75/88 SATURDAY: Partly sunny with a few showers/storms. 75/89 SUNDAY: Partly sunny with a few showers/storms. 75/86 MONDAY: Partly to mostly cloudy with a few showers/storms. 73/86

In “Apalachicola Oysters and the Battle for a Florida Bay,” Gravy producer Betsy Wallace takes listeners to Franklin County, Florida to find out if a new tourist development could be the biggest threat to a decades-long, $30 million investment in the Apalachicola Bay Oyster Fishery Restoration. Franklin County is tucked into Florida's Forgotten Coast, a stretch of the panhandle known for white sand beaches, off-shore fishing, and the iconic Apalachicola Bay oyster. It is distinctly Old Florida; there are family-owned seafood restaurants next to mom-and-pop bait shops. You won't see a high-rise hotel until the next county over. When the black bears get hot in the sticky heat of July, they lumber across Highway 98 to swim with the jellyfish in the salty Gulf Coast water. This area is home to one of the few remaining working shorelines in North Florida. For about a hundred years, up until a devastating fishery crash in 2013, the oyster industry powered Franklin County's economy. At its peak in 2012, the industry brought in over $9 million and employed about 2,500 locals in the small Florida panhandle towns of Eastpoint, Apalachicola, Carrabelle, and Panacea. In 2013 the oyster industry crashed and took the local economy down with it. Now, more than a decade later, join Wallace as she digs into the restoration of the Apalachicola Bay oyster reefs and a newly proposed (and highly divisive) large-scale tourist resort. Will the Forgotten Coast stay forgotten long enough for the seafood industry to recover and provide stable, well-paying jobs for the next generation? Or will tourism and real estate development finally take over, as it has up and down the Florida coast? In this episode, Wallace talks to Josh Norman, who grew up in an oystering family and is a marine biologist turned VP of the locally owned Bayside Coffee; Charles Pennycutt, owner of Fisherman's Choice Bait and Tackle; Paddy's Raw Bar restaurateur Patrick Sparks; Florida State University scientist Dr. Sandra Brooke; and oyster farmer Xochitl Bevera. Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. The gopher wood of Noah's Ark is unique. So far as is known, it grows only on the east bank of the Apalachicola River in a small area near Bristol Florida. The drift and pull of the Gulf Stream was calculated and could take an ark from Florida to Mount Ararat. The original area of Eden was much broader, E.E Callaway said, "It consisted of south Georgia and south Alabama, lying east of the Alabama River, and that part of west Florida lying between the Alabama line on the west and the Ochlockonee River on the east." Just as the River in the Bible, the Apalachicola river in Florida, is the only river in the world with four heads to flow through like Eden in the Bible. Dr. Narco Longo is an epic researcher/YouTube documentary filmmaker. His work consists of the findings in Florida that prove history wrong. He simply breaks down many topics that seem taboo but when later researched, have a lot of merit. His biggest insight is that the Garden of Eden could have potentially been where he lives today in Florida! rWotD Episode 2449: 1863 Atlantic hurricane season Welcome to random Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a random Wikipedia page every day.The random article for Wednesday, 17 January 2024 is 1863 Atlantic hurricane season. The 1863 Atlantic hurricane season featured five landfalling tropical cyclones. In the absence of modern satellite and other remote-sensing technologies, only storms that affected populated land areas or encountered ships at sea were recorded, so the actual total could be higher. An undercount bias of zero to six tropical cyclones per year between 1851 and 1885 has been estimated. There were seven recorded hurricanes and no major hurricanes, which are Category 3 or higher on the modern day Saffir–Simpson scale. Of the known 1863 cyclones, seven were first documented in 1995 by José Fernández-Partagás and Henry Diaz, while the ninth tropical storm was first documented in 2003. These changes were largely adopted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Atlantic hurricane reanalysis in their updates to the Atlantic hurricane database (HURDAT), with some adjustments.Although it is not officially listed in HURDAT, Hurricane "Amanda", named after a ship run aground by the storm, developed in the Gulf of Mexico on May 24. First documented in 2013 by Michael Chenoweth and Cary Mock, the system capsized several other ships and caused damage along the coast of the Florida Panhandle. The cyclone made landfall near Apalachicola, Florida, exceptionally early in the season, on May 28. Amanda is the only known hurricane landfall in the United States in the month of May since HURDAT records began in 1851. On land and at sea, the cyclone left at least 110 fatalities. Few other storms were notable. In August, the third official storm capsized the American brig Bainbridge off Hatteras, North Carolina, drowning 80 people. The seventh official cyclone caused 10 deaths near Tampico, Tamaulipas, after the ship J. K. L. sunk. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:13 UTC on Wednesday, 17 January 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 1863 Atlantic hurricane season on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Joanna Standard.

Many Brown-headed Nuthatches make their home in the tall longleaf pines of the Apalachicola National Forest in Florida. Twittering constantly, the birds probe for tiny insects or extract seeds from cones in the trees' upper branches. Forests of longleaf pine once dominated the sandy coastal plain from Virginia to Texas, but the tall, straight pines proved irresistible for their lumber. Now, much of the forest is gone, replaced by dense planted stands of quicker-growing slash pines. As our population grows, and more and more land is devoted to human uses, our national forests become increasingly important for birds, both rare and common.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? It has since been downgraded to a Category 1 storm. Idalia produced storm surges that reached several feet in some areas and brought damaging winds that howled up to 130 miles per hour at one point, according to the National Hurricane Center. It also caused flooding that completely encompassed Floridian roadways when it passed the Apalachee Bay and made landfall over Florida's Big Bend region, where the peninsula merges into the Panhandle. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he had directed law enforcement to "protect people's property. "We are not going to tolerate any looting in the aftermath of a natural disaster. I mean it's just ridiculous that you would try to do something like that on the heels of an almost Category 4 hurricane hitting this community," DeSantis said. He warned would-be looters that they could very well be walking into the home of a Second Amendment advocate. "I've seen signs in people's yards, and I would say it's probably here, ‘You Loot, We Shoot.’ You never know what's behind that door," DeSantis said. President Biden said he had spoken with the governors of states most impacted by the storm and vowed all federal assistance, including 1,500 personnel and 900 Coast Guard personnel throughout the southeast. "Federal teams on the ground are going to continue to work with the first responders in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, to get people to safety," Biden said. At least two people have died in vehicle accidents since the storm made landfall, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. In Pasco County, a 40-year-old male lost control of his Ford Ranger and collided into a tree after driving too fast for the weather conditions, while a 59-year-old male died in Alachua County after his Toyota Tacoma plunged into a ditch and crashed into a nearby tree line, officials said. The storm has been impacting Gainesville, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Dowling Park, Lake City, Cedar Key, Chiefland, Newberry, Cross City, Apalachicola, and Perry. Its impact will also be felt in Orlando, Spring Hill, Bradenton, Bartow, Ocala, Lake Placid, Tampa, Sarasota, and Fort Myers. By 11 a.m. Wednesday, the storm was a Category 1, with sustained winds of 90 mph, and its impact was being felt in Georgia, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Authorities continue to urge caution as, despite the slight decline, the storm remains dangerous and potentially life-threatening. More than 340,000 Americans were without power as Idalia continued to blast Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolina, according to Fox Weather. Further outages are expected as the storm continues pummeling the state as Idalia continues its northeast path to Georgia, the Carolinas and then the Atlantic Ocean. The National Weather Service in Tallahassee had called Idalia "an unprecedented event" as it rapidly intensified over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, and obtained Category 4 status within 24 hours. It downgraded slightly, officially becoming a high-end Category 3 storm when it made landfall, before downgrading again. The NWS also said "no one" has witnessed a storm strengthen to such magnitude in such a short time. https://hotair.com/karen-townsend/2023/08/30/trump-raises-more-than-20-million-in-august-n574661#google_vignette’ Trump raises more than $20 million in August Donald Trump has raised $20M in August, according to his campaign. Since he was processed in the Fulton County jail and had a mugshot taken, he has raised more than $9.4M. Despite the multiple indictments and the first-ever presidential mugshot, his contributors continue to send in campaign contributions. The campaign knew the mugshot would be a money-maker and fundraising came swiftly as soon as it was released. The angry scowl seen around the world is marketed on various merchandise on Trump’s website. Trump haters are buying up merchandise on other sites and displaying their purchases on social media like it is a badge of honor. “Since the moment my mugshot was plastered all over the Internet in a vicious attempt to wrongfully turn me into a criminal, our movement has RAISED $9 MILLION from grassroots patriots like YOU,” Trump said in a statement released by the Trump Save America Joint Fundraising Committee on Tuesday. “In fact, our campaign recorded its SINGLE GREATEST FUNDRAISING DAY EVER,” the 77-year-old said of his Georgia surrender bounty. His fundraising numbers spiked once the mugshot was released – which it immediately was – with supporters particularly pleased with the “never surrender” slogan. Critics noted the irony since the mugshot was taken when he surrendered to authorities to be processed at the jail. The merchandise sales are impressive so far. The totals reported include 36,000 T-shirts, 24,000 coffee mugs and 8,600 posters. One thing that people talk about is the amount of money Trump is spending on legal bills and how a lot of those bills are being paid by campaign donations. It’s being reported that the mugshot merchandise money is being earmarked by the campaign for political and campaign activities and won’t be used to cover legal expense. Trump has spent tens of millions of dollars on legal bills since the season of indictments began. Altogether, Trump is facing 91 counts in all four indictments. Trump raised $5M in the first 48 hours after the indictment in Manhattan and $10M over five days. After the indictment over the mishandling of classified documents, his campaign said it raised $6.6M. Campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said that last Friday was the biggest fundraising day for the Trump campaign so far, with $4.18M raised on the day alone. Trump’s mugshot was taken on Thursday night. https://nypost.com/2023/08/29/chicago-tv-news-reporter-on-assignment-to-cover-thefts-robbed-of-video-camera-at-gunpoint/ Chicago TV news reporter on assignment to cover thefts robbed of video camera at gunpoint A pair of Chicago journalists were held up at gunpoint by three men wearing ski masks — while covering the spate of robberies and carjackings that plagued the Windy City over the weekend, according to local police and news outlets. A Univision Chicago reporter and a cameraman were set to do a live shot in the upscale Wicker Park section at around 4:30 a.m. on Monday when a black SUV and a gray sedan pulled up alongside them, according to the news site CWBChicago. The two male journalists — one 28 and the other 42 — were standing near the 1200 block of North Milwaukee Ave. when “three unknown male offenders exited the vehicles, wearing ski masks and displaying firearms,” Chicago police officials told The Post on Tuesday. The thugs made off with their video camera before fleeing, cops said. No injuries were reported and none of the suspects were in custody as of Tuesday afternoon, police said. The brazen attack was part of a spree that involved at least 30 others who were either robbed or carjacked in the crime-ravaged city on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning, according to local authorities. Luis Godinez, the vice president of Univision Chicago, circulated an email to employees confirming that their colleagues were the ones who were robbed, according to the news site Block Club Chicago. The fact that the news personnel were now part of the story is “total irony,” the Univision reporter, who wished to remain anonymous, told the site. “As a journalist, you never want to be the story, right?” the reporter told Block Club Chicago. Earlier this month, a Chicago TV news videographer had two of his phones robbed while preparing to cover a news conference on the city’s West Side. Law enforcement officials have yet to make arrests in those cases, according to reports. https://beckernews.com/99-of-fatalities-in-united-states-not-primarily-caused-by-covid-19-cdc-data-51670/ 99% of Fatalities in United States Not Primarily Caused by Covid-19: CDC Data Despite the rampant fear being spread in the U.S. media about new Covid subvariants, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Infection cast doubt on any cause for alarm. CDC statistics reveal that only 1% of all weekly deaths across the United States are attributed to Covid-19. For the week ending on August 19, the CDC’s Covid dashboard reports 324 Covid-related fatalities, constituting a mere 1.7% of all deaths during that period. Although the percentage of deaths due to Covid for the week ending August 19 reflects a minor uptick from the prior week, it is substantially lower than the pandemic’s apex, when the CDC cited Covid as the cause of nearly one in three deaths. Data highlights that states such as Washington, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, Maryland, and New York are experiencing higher rates of Covid-induced deaths. Maryland and Florida lead with 3.4%, while Washington, Tennessee, North Carolina, and New York are around the 2% mark. In contrast, more than 24 states recorded between one and nine Covid-related deaths for the week ending August 19. Additional data points out that the fatality rate is marginally higher among women than men, and is most elevated among individuals aged 75 and older. This latest data may offer some comfort at a time when anxieties are escalating across the country due to the spread of highly transmissible new Covid variants, resulting in an increase in infections and hospitalizations, as well as the reintroduction of certain Covid mandates. Recently detected variants like EG.5 (Eris) and BA.8.26 (Pirola) have emerged in multiple countries, including the United States. These variants have undergone extensive mutations, making them potentially more adept at dodging vaccine and natural immunity, and contributing to a rise in infections. Despite the appearance of these variants, infections in the U.S. have doubled and hospital admissions have risen for the fifth consecutive week, but they remain near historical lows. Importantly, Covid-related deaths have not surged. Last week’s concerns over a Covid resurgence led Hollywood’s Lionsgate studio to enforce mask mandates at its Santa Monica, California offices. This decision was later rescinded within days. Similarly, Rutgers University in New Jersey and Morris Brown College in Georgia both declared that face coverings will be mandatory for faculty and students. Medical facilities like Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Santa Rosa, California, and Upstate Community Hospital in Syracuse, New York, have reinstated mask requirements for healthcare workers, patients, and visitors. In Kentucky, the Lee County School District shut down classes less than two weeks after reopening, as nearly 20% of its student body fell ill with a ‘tripledemic’ of illnesses, including Covid, strep throat, and influenza. President Biden indicated on Friday that his administration will “likely” recommend another Covid booster vaccine soon. He also signed a proposal asking Congress for additional funds to modify Covid vaccines to better counteract the new variants. Nevertheless, public interest in booster shots remains tepid, with only 18% of eligible Americans having received any form of booster. As pointed out by the Mayo Clinic, about 81% of Covid-related deaths in the United States have been in people age 65 and older, adding that “risks are even higher for older people when they have other health conditions.” Even when accounting for the difficulty in assessing cause of death in a predominately elderly population with comorbidities, the Covid-19 pandemic nonetheless had a 99.7% survival rate in the United States.

David Mangum is unquestionably one of the most highly exposed tarpon guides there is. His early notoriety came with a film shot by Howard films titled “Location X,” located somewhere in the Apalachicola region of the Florida Panhandle. The darker water and monster fish that swim there are much more prone to eat a fly, creating the opportunity for some highly energetic footage. It was an eye opener. Many locals already knew about what was going on in the Panhandle, but now there was a movie. Then in 2017, Yeti produced a short tarpon film, “120 days,” which represented David Mangum's tarpon season that rocked the house. Shot in black and white, it was electric and it went viral. It's an incredible look into a sport and a fish we love, and a man that has refined his craft. But the words I heard expressed, and the way he caught his fish raised a red flag that made me take a closer look. I knew our paths had to cross at some point. Then, I met David in the Florida Keys while we were both filming separate TV shows with Jared Raskob. David was awesome, funny, effervescent and engaging, but I held my questions that I hoped one day would be answered. On this podcast, we tread into some deeper water with Mangum and talked about some very important topics including: passion, legacy, ethics, and spot ownership. He was articulate about our differences and cared about how he would be heard, everything we'd hoped for! Thank you so much for coming on, David!
