In the UK, 82% of adults drink alcohol, 48% of adults drink once per week, yet it is widely known as a toxin to the body on many levels, and it's primary action is a depressant. 5% of all deaths worldwide are linked to alcohol, with alcohol related issues rising significantly since the pandemic. But, alcohol is a cultural and societal norm, it's everywhere and it's totally normal to drink it, more normal than any other drug in circulation. It's used to enjoy yourself, unwind, relieve stress, and escape your problems. So the question is, how much is too much, is one drink ok, or are we missing its true effects not just on our physical health, but on our mental health. And if you exercise and drink, is it ok, or holding you back? I've been particularly interested in this since going alcohol free. It's been 6 months now, and in this podcast I'll share my experience, some physiological statistics around alcohol use, how I accidently started this experiment, and my argument for a life without alcohol. Today's conversation is with Ruari Fairbairns. Ruari is the co-founder of One Year No Beer, podcast host and Ted-X Speaker. Having built a successful career as an oil broker, Ruari went on a journey to redefine his relationship with alcohol and has gone onto build and inspire a movement that empowers others and challenge society's perceptions about alcohol. Expect to learn the potential cost alcohol can have on health, productivity, and relationships, the deep rooted societal impact of alcohol, the power forces, traditions and advertising spend which engrains it into so much of our lives, and why you don't have to conform. Ruari offers insights into his journey of breaking free from alcohol, emphasising the benefits on mental clarity, physical health, and personal success. Like any time I've discussed a conscious reframing of alcohol and elective sobriety on the podcast, this episode does not necessarily address those impacted by Alcohol Use Disorder or an addiction to the substance. Today's conversation is primarily focused on seeing where alcohol is holding uni back from your potential and seeing what you could unlock. Ruari shares some amazing data that just 6% of people want to give up alcohol completely, but the vast majority of the remainder surveyed do want to reduce their intake and reassess their relationship. I know this episode can help you do that. Today's episode is sponsored and supported by Hussle. Hussle is the way to get access to 1000s of UK gyms, pools and spas with one simple membership. I've been a Hussle user since 2014 when my first graduate sales job took me down to Manchester, Leeds, Norwich and beyond. It enables me to access gyms wherever I am with work or socially as well as get access to specific facilities like saunas and spas. Hussle is, of course, available to individuals, but what is really exciting is that companies can now partner with Hussle to give their staff members fitness access as an employee benefit. Anyone who listens to a podcast like this one knows that making it easier to exercise and access facilities is a great way to boost employee physical, mental and financial wellbeing. Through the years, I've maintained transparency about my journey with alcoholism—a label I've embraced in the solitude of self-discovery. However, this characterization doesn't resonate with most individuals. The majority of drinkers engage in a marginally excessive indulgence in alcohol. While this behavior may not be catastrophic in the traditional sense, it does raise discernible concerns. The persistent hangovers, lethargy, and resulting melancholy it begets become tiresome. The desire to desist is tangible, but the seamless integration of alcohol into social and professional settings renders the prospect of abstention seemingly insurmountable. Today's guest found himself ensnared within precisely this behavior pattern. Ruari Fairbairns is a former oil broker from London who—after a falling out with booze—decided it was time to put the plug in the jug. The benefits were so profound that he later walked away from his career in finance to become a full-time advocate for an alcohol-free lifestyle. Ruari, alongside collaborator Andy Ramage (featured in episode 444 in 2019), co-founded a pioneering institution, One Year No Beer, in 2015, a subscription-based bastion of sobriety with over 100,000 global members. Beyond his role as co-founder, Fairbairns co-authored the UK bestseller The 28-Day Alcohol-Free Challenge. He also co-hosts the One Year No Beer Podcast, guiding listeners on a journey of wisdom and sobriety. In this episode, we delve into the gradual transformation of society's relationship with alcohol, dissecting the negative repercussions on both mind and body. We explore the need for heightened awareness around alcohol, challenging the traditional narrative and embracing a healthier relationship with it. Ruari guides us through compelling discussions on stress, trauma, ADHD, emotional sobriety, and the pivotal role of community in the transformative journey. As we welcome the New Year and the possibilities it presents, I offer this conversation as an encouragement to consider the many ways in which alcohol continues to interfere with your health, hopes, and dreams. Co-Host Ruari Fairbairns (https://mountaintoppodcast.com/beer) We as men tend to have a complicated relationship with alcohol. My guest, Ruari Fairbairns is well aware of that. That's why even though he's a professional advocate for drinking less, he comes from a completely different perspective than the tee-totaller activists out there who would seem to label anyone with a beer in their hand as an alcoholic. Indeed, despite the catchy title of his practice, One Year No Beer, Ruari still occasionally pops the top himself. If that sounds hypocritical, it's not. His is no heavy-handed, all-or nothing stance. Rather, he brings the unique message of encouraging us as men in particular to change our relationship with alcohol. In his educated opinion, over time alcohol robs us of our mental and physical health to a degree we don't even realize. Once we give ourselves a break from it, we start thinking and feeling better...causing us to WANT to drink less (if at all), instead of feeling as if we're being strongarmed into sobriety. It's a novel approach designed for the HUGE demographic of men who like to drink, but aren't clinically alcoholics. A lot of men drink alcohol to unwind at the end of the day. But is that really the best way to do so? And what if we find ourselves only drinking in certain situations? What if we don't want to stop being in that situation? And is drinking non-alcoholic beer a decent way to quit alcohol? What if there was a new, high-tech alcohol substitute that gave you all the benefits with none of the downside? In this episode of The Awakened Man Podcast, host Benjamin Owen engages in a thought-provoking conversation with Ruari Fairbairns, the founder of One Year No Beer (OYNB), the UK's leading campaign for controlling one's drinking. Ruari sheds light on how OYNB goes beyond helping people control their alcohol consumption, aiming to assist individuals in creating lives so extraordinary that excessive drinking becomes unnecessary. One of the essential distinctions discussed in the podcast is the difference between giving up drinking entirely and controlling one's drinking. Ben shares his personal experience of working through this distinction, highlighting his desire for freedom to choose whether or not to have a beer with friends, without feeling obligated to be sober all the time.Throughout the episode, Ruari and Ben explore the underlying reasons why people may consume alcohol excessively. They delve into the societal norms and pressures surrounding drinking, as well as the various emotional triggers that may lead to overconsumption. By understanding these factors, they provide practical strategies and tips for men seeking to control their drinking habits. However, it's important to note that the podcast's focus is on individuals who have a desire to reduce or control their drinking, rather than those who are dealing with alcoholism or addiction. Listeners are advised to consult a medical practitioner for appropriate guidance in such cases. If you're interested in controlling your drinking and would like to seek support from Ruari and his team at OYNB - One Year No Beer, visit their website at https://www.oneyearnobeer.com/.Disclaimer: The content discussed in this podcast does not serve as medical guidance for individuals facing alcoholism or symptoms of alcohol addiction. It is recommended to consult a medical practitioner for personalized assistance. >>>>>>>Join the Facebook group where we hang about daily: Join Here Are you a man in business and have a partner? Nick is joined by Ruari Fairbairns, the founder and CEO of One Year No Beer, to talk about alcohol - the impact it can have if you're a regular drinker, and what effects this can have on you as an entrepreneur. Nick and Ruari also talk about the journey that led to such a groundbreaking, innovative concept as One Year No Beer, and what we can change if alcohol is showing up in our lives in ways that fail to serve us. The ones who do this, are the ones who last the longest. As business owners, the idea that alcohol is something we need to be participating in, in order to relax and unwind, really needs to change. The evidence against it is overwhelming. We must find other ways to "take the edge off" when it comes to relaxation. We need to subsidise and fund research into more healthy forms of "relaxation" with the help of the alcohol industry itself. The first step towards building a better relationship with alcohol is to remove the belief that you are an "all or nothing" person, and change that belief to one of feeling fully in control. Ruari quit drinking and it fundamentally changed his life. Together with his colleague they decided to create something to change the peer pressure around giving up drinking. They found a community of people and One Year No Beer was launched in 2016. There is now a book, a podcast and a community to support anyone and everyone to live an alcohol free life. Ruari Fairbairns is the co-founder and CEO of One Year No Beer, a global alcohol prevention program, aimed at anyone drinking more than 3 glasses of wine a week. Originally from a small island off the West coast of Scotland, in his younger years, he was no stranger to a pint or two. After moving down to London and starting a career as an oil broker, he quickly fell into the ‘work hard, play hard' style of living. After meeting his wife, and having a child, his old ways started to wear thin and create friction in relationships as well as cause me a few health problems. Reluctant to blame alcohol for any of these issues, he took an anger management programme where he quickly learned that coffee and alcohol are the two biggest instigators of anger. After reading this, I decided to drop them for the length of the programme (90 days) and that is when everything changed.Happier, healthier and fitter for being 90 days alcohol and caffeine free, he realised that no one was championing the benefits of abstaining from alcohol – but instead, all of the focus was on how bad drinking was for you. That is when he decided to set up One Year No Beer, a toolkit for surviving modern society alcohol-free.I absolutely love my current role because every day I get the opportunity to help people and I genuinely believe that this is what I was put on this earth to do. Changing my own relationship with alcohol was the starting point for my journey with OYNB, because this allowed me to create space in my life, to find my true meaning and purpose. I couldn't believe how much happier and healthier and fitter I felt. It has opened up an incredible life for myself and my family – one of meaning, purpose and ‘healthy' socialising. One my kids will be proud of and my wife loves being part of.(Michael Hanson is the host of the COSMIC Bridge podcast that inspires its listeners to find their higher purpose and connect their material and spiritual life through stories of breathwork teachers, shamans and stroke survivors. He is also the CEO of Growth Genie, an international B2B sales consultancy)
If you're starting to wonder whether giving up drinking might have a positive impact on your life, you're not alone. A growing number of “sober curious” people are starting to take a closer look at the role alcohol plays in their life. Being Sober curious is not about being teetotal, but rather involves curiosity about the reasons behind your desire to drink and the way alcohol affects your life. Leadership & Alcohol with Ruari Fairbairns. This week I was excited to sit down and talk to the co-founder and CEO of the amazing organisation - One Year No Beer, Ruari Fairbairns. This organisation is very special to me. I have been alcohol free for the past 2 years, and OYNB was the challenge that set me on this amazing path. I have achieved things I never knew I would over these past two years, saved a ton of money and lost quite a bit of weight. Being alcohol free is something I am incredibly passionate about, and I have OYNB to thank, in part, for this! OYNB was launched in 2016 by Ruari and his friend - Andy. They wanted to challenge themselves to a year without alcohol, and quickly learnt that it was a complete game changer for them! They then came up with the concept for OYNB to encourage others to take on this challenge and connect with like-minded individuals who were doing the same thing.Ruari shared his story in this episode, as well as the inspiration behind OYNB. He shares with us why and how taking a tactical break from alcohol for a while could be the best thing you do for yourself!I cannot recommend this challenge enough. Today my guest is self development coach Andy Ramage. Starting out as a professional footballer, moving into the corporate world when his sporting dreams were dashed, he climbed to the top of his game as a broker before pivoting again into his current career as he wanted to find something that didn't sacrifice his mind, his body and his relationships.Andy founded the global movement One Year No Beer with his friend and colleague Ruari Fairbairns and in this episode he talks about middle lane drinkers, those without addiction but who may be underestimating the effects drinking is having on their lives – or put in a different way, underestimating the joy and time they gain when alcohol is given up.Andy has stepped away from One Year No Beer, the business, to focus his attention on a PHD around motivation and a business training people and other coaches on the psychology behind it. We talk about getting still, finding your passion, coming back from adversity and starting small. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
As a hyperactive kid growing up on the Isle of Mull, Ruari Fairbairns was misunderstood and branded mischievous and troublesome. Put through counselling from as young as six years old, he then attempted suicide twice in his early teens before finding drugs and alcohol. Fortunately, a sharp entrepreneurial brain saved him from further harm – as he set up multiple companies from the age of 15 onwards – but his toxic relationship with alcohol followed him to London's binge drinking culture as he worked for 13 years as a broker. Deciding to take a break, it was during an alcohol-free period that Ruari noticed how his life improved – from becoming fitter, healthier, happier, more productive, to being a better dad and husband, he transformed not just his physical health, but also his mental health. It became Ruari's mission to help others who had become disillusioned with alcohol to make the same changes and One Year No Beer was born, a now global platform with 100,000 members in over 130 countries. In this energetic and honest episode of ‘Life Happens', James Gwinnett, marketing director of 87%, explores with Ruari how he came to terms with the difficulties of his childhood, how we need to reassociate our relationship with alcohol and how to take on the challenge of taking a break from alcohol without losing something that we cherish as a natural human instinct … our social status. We hope you enjoy the episode. If you do, please share it with your friends and subscribe to the 87% YouTube channel, as this will help us in our mission to improve the mental fitness of society percent by percent. 'Life Happens' is the podcast that helps you build mental fitness, speaking to inspirational people about life's ups and downs, how they've overcome setbacks and what it means to them to be mentally fit.

Nick is with ‘One Year No Beer’ founder Ruari Fairbairns talking about the movement and community he has built and his passion. As someone who has experienced a professional life where alcohol is very much part of the culture, Ruari discusses the reality of alcohol and why many believe that alcohol is making life better when actually it’s making it worse. The movement and platform he has created gives people the opportunity to undertake a challenge that reveals the reality of their relationship with alcohol and enables them to understand what they are really seeking in life. Ruari is passionate about his community but is also a hugely successful entrepreneur building an empire that is providing aspiration for those involved. KEY TAKEAWAYS We are all in a toxic relationship with alcohol there is no safe level as it’s a poison. The ‘take control’ course is for those who have taken an extended break from alcohol and want to have a structure in place moving forward. Empires have been previously built on alcohol; it is said to have greased the wheels of many deals. Can you as an entrepreneur give yourself an upgrade by taking a break from alcohol? Yes, and you will gain more energy, productivity, clarity and time. People use alcohol to switch off but in reality, alcohol creates anxiety. You should celebrate the wins as an entrepreneur in business and in life but you don’t need alcohol to do it. People want to help other people and we are creating a platform where people can help each other. When we hit the power of unlocking community we will be hitting millions of users who will be empowering each other to change their relationship with alcohol. The principles of change are the same whatever the addiction. If we can give people a platform and the tools to work out what they need to change in their lives then we can change the world. Community is free to build and when you have built a community it will have a wider impact than just those directly involved. The ripple effect is immeasurable. BEST MOMENTS ‘I can have a drink whenever and where ever I want to, I just choose not to’ ‘Creating a movement that is challenge-based is a brilliant way of marketing’ ‘I know that changing your relationship with alcohol will change your life’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Empire Builders Podcast One Year No Beer website ABOUT THE HOST Nick James Nick dropped out of university at the age of 21 and failed spectacularly with his first coaching business, which forced him to take a £16k/yr telesales job. Within 12 months he was the top performer and left to start his second business at 24. This time he discovered a winning formula and before long had a multi-six-figure company. He then made a huge mistake which nearly put him out of business and cost him £50,000 in personal cash!
