What a great talk by Dr. Jamie Marich based on her studies, practice and lived experience with addiction, recovery, the 12 Steps and Trauma. Hosted/introduced by Zanner, Jamie tells the ICSAA 2024 Orlando crowd that they had their Dr. Jamie Marich dress and PowerPoint professional presentation upstairs; after sitting through day one's chill-vibe, she thought that frayed gene shorts, a "Sober is Sexy" T-shirt and a talk from the heart was more in order. Not only is Dr. Jamie a recognized clinical professional and author, but their candid shares from lived experience as a trauma survivor and a person with mental health challenges in long-term recovery from addiction. Unafraid of controversy, she will also boldly speak to where her field and society at large gets it wrong about mental health and recovery. Her multi-layered perspective allows her to feel at home in front of diverse audiences as she addresses how to heal our history of wounding in new and creative ways that lead to emotional, spiritual, vocational, and interpersonal flourishing. https://jamiemarich.com/The International Conference of Secular AA first started in Santa Monica in 2014, then called We Agnostics & Freethinkers International AA Conference, went to Austin in 2016, Toronto 2018, online (Zoom) 2020 (when Washington was cancelled due to COVID), 2021, 2022, 2023 and live again in Orlando September 20th to 22nd in Orlando. This week, Dr. Amy Yillik discusses trauma-responsive practices in education with Jessica Reamon, Autism Consultant for the Northwest Regional Education Service District. The two educators emphasize the importance of creating an environment where students feel safe and connected, a necessity for any learning to take place. They suggest achieving this goal through co-regulation, the process of modeling and teaching self-regulation skills with supportive responses and a warm, calming presence. Co-regulation, of course, cannot be effective if educators don't also feel safe and in control, an ideal that is often difficult to achieve with the stress that is endemic to the field of education. This episode suggests a variety of strategies to maintain your equilibrium and sense of calm (have you ever heard of dance church?). The benefits for yourself and your students are within reach. On this week's podcast, we are joined by Laurel Wiers, LMFT. Laurel is a consultant, coach, speaker, therapist, and author. We discuss mental health and leadership, and how she is helping people resolve personal trauma through Accelerated Resolution Therapy. I share a glass of Hop Tarts Pineapple Milkshake IPA from Duclaw Brewing Co. in Baltimore, MD.About Laurel: Laurel is a recognized expert on trauma. This expertise guides her work with high performers so they can identify and reverse the effects of negative life events that are holding them back from success. After 17 years as a therapist, she saw the disconnect between hours of traditional therapy and the lack of progress in her client's who were struggling with lingering triggers. She targeted her focus towards solving the problem of removing those triggers. For so many, this overlooked problem secretly impacts their performance, preventing them from getting the results they want. Laurel is a popular trainer on the topic of PTSD and keynote speaker. She works with groups and individuals to quickly reset them from the negative effects of difficult life experiences that interfere with their work and life performance.
In this special American Probation and Parole (APPPA) edition, brought to you by their International Relations Committee, we delve into a transformative conversation with Jane Mulcahy, a dedicated Research Fellow from the University of Limerick! Jane brings us her groundbreaking 3-part series that could redefine the essence of probation practice globally. This episode explores the intricate link between the nervous system and behavioral responses, shedding light on how probation officers can leverage this understanding to enhance their practices. Jane's first article lays the groundwork for recognizing the impact of physiological responses in rehabilitation. We then navigate through her second piece, which champions the power of nervous system awareness as a tool for profound rehabilitation strategies. Lastly, we discuss the heart of the matter in her third article, advocating for a more compassionate approach to supervision...all of which align with the TIDES (Trauma Informed Desistance) program model, and our belief that the probation system isn't just about oversight, but also about empowerment and healing. Join us for an enlightening journey into the heart of probation innovation, where science meets empathy, and discover how these insights can lead to a more effective and humane approach to probation and parole. Part One: The Importance of nervous system awareness when working with people on probation. Part Two: Beyond rehabilitation: The Power of Nervous System Awareness in Probation Part Three: Why a heart-centered approach to Probation Practice is smart. The Paragon Group

EP:55 A question I get asked all the time… When do you know you are finally healed from trauma? The truth is… It's not about when is the healing over. It's about gaining awareness to understand that you actually do have control over how you feel in the midst of a trigger. It is the ability to say, I know that I can support myself through this. I know I have the capacity to do it. I've done it before. And I know I'm going to feel okay on the other side. And that is what it's about. The healing and work always continues. Am I more healed now than I was a year or two ago or five years ago, you bet. But I also love the person that I am here today. And I also look forward to the person I will be in a year. Like I look forward to that. And it's okay to accept it all. Healing can happen, but it does happen very slowly. And I do believe that we become wiser as we get older, we become more comfortable within our skin and more comfortable with the choices we're making and who we are and how we choose to lead our lives and not caring about what others think as much like all that happens with with time, right and experience, but also healing. So best of luck on your healing journey and know that it's okay to go slow.

Truama happens every day with big life threatening events to little ones. Depending on the person, the reaction to having your life be out-of-control and dangerous can be life changing. The brain changes and all coping skills are gone. Memory comes through whatever sense (hearing, seeing, feeling, etc.) will get you through it. Some people completely freeze and others react immediately. If you are intoxicated or on something, survival is minimal and the damage is far greater in most cases. Tune in and learn how to move trauma out of your life and get your life back!
