I'm excited to share my conversation with Stuart Phillips, where we dive deep into muscle building science - a topic that generates endless debate on social media. As someone who struggles with gaining muscle despite consistent training, I was shocked when Dr. Christopher Gardner told me muscle growth is "10% nutrition and 90% exercise." This contradicted everything I thought I knew, so I had to bring in Stu - widely considered the foremost expert on muscle development - to separate fact from fiction. The most fascinating insight for me was discovering that effective muscle building can happen across a wide range of repetition schemes - from as low as 3 reps to as high as 25 reps per set. This challenges the rigid "strength/hypertrophy/endurance" continuum that's dominated fitness advice for decades. Despite being the most studied supplement of all time, creatine is making a big resurgence. It's been the hot topic in the health podcast space for the past year, as new scientific evidence is showing creatine is about more than looking big, but has big and important effects on brain health and overall longevity. I'm excited to share my conversation with Dr. Scott Sherr, where we dive deep into methylene blue - a compound you've probably seen all over social media lately (those blue tongues!). As someone whose primary research focuses on Alzheimer's disease, I was fascinated to explore the science behind this molecule that dates back to the 1870s and was actually the first drug registered with the FDA in 1897.  The most fascinating insight for me was learning how methylene blue can serve as an electron acceptor in our mitochondria - essentially functioning as a substitute for oxygen when our cells are under stress. This explains why it shows promise for everything from traumatic brain injury to cognitive enhancement and even as a potential alternative to stimulant medications.   If you're interested in optimizing brain performance, understanding mitochondrial health, or simply curious about this blue compound that's suddenly everywhere, this episode provides both the scientific foundation and practical applications you need. Subscribe to The Neuroscience Experience for more conversations at the intersection of brain science and performance. Alzheimer's doesn't just “happen” later in life—it's a slow, silent process that can begin decades before symptoms appear. In this solo episode, we challenge the myth that Alzheimer's is purely genetic, and break down what the science really says about your risk. I explore the role of the APOE4 gene, how it interacts with lifestyle and metabolic health, and why women—especially during and after menopause—may face a unique vulnerability. Most importantly, I introduce three cutting-edge blood tests that can detect the earliest signs of Alzheimer's, long before memory loss sets in. We'll also talk prevention: from blood sugar and insulin resistance to inflammation, hormone balance, and brain energy metabolism—everything you can start doing right now to safeguard your cognitive future. This is more than a conversation about Alzheimer's—it's a roadmap for taking control of your brain health. SponsorsA huge thank you to my sponsors for supporting this episode. Imagine being at the forefront of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's research, holding hope for millions of patients. That's where Eliezer Masliah stood—a top neuroscientist and key figure at the National Institute on Aging (NIA), responsible for overseeing billions in funding intended to push groundbreaking research on these devastating diseases forward. But things weren't as they seemed.Recent investigations, including one published in Science (Vol 385, Issue 6716), have raised alarming questions about Masliah's research. Over 100 of his studies may contain falsified data, including duplicated or manipulated images, claiming to reveal critical insights into how Alzheimer's and Parkinson's impact the brain. If this sounds eerily familiar, you're right. Just two years ago, another scandal rocked the Alzheimer's research world. Sylvain Lesné's 2006 Nature paper was considered a landmark in Alzheimer's research—until 2022, when it was revealed that the paper was tainted by manipulated data. That revelation sent shockwaves through the scientific community, throwing years of research and drug development into doubt. And now, we're facing a similar situation again. The implications of these new allegations against Masliah are massive. His work has shaped entire fields of study, influencing experimental treatments like the Parkinson's drug prasinezumab. But with these revelations, years of research and billions of dollars in funding hang in the balance. What's most heartbreaking? Real people—those battling Alzheimer's and Parkinson's—are caught in the middle of this scandal. They've been placing their hopes in breakthroughs, trusting science to provide answers and relief. If the very research supporting their treatments is compromised, the cost isn't just in lost time and money—it's a betrayal of the trust placed in the system by millions of patients and their families. We have to demand better. Science, and the people depending on it, deserve better. The Neuro Athletics Newsletter Instagram: @louisanicola_Twitter : @louisanicola_YouTube: @Louisa NicolaThe Neuro Experience Podcast is proud to have hosted: Dr Andrew Huberman, Dr Gabrielle Lyon, Dr Layne Norton, Thomas DeLauer, Shawn Stevenson, Dr. Rocio Salas-Whalen, Saad Alam, Uma Naidoo, Dr. Lanna Cheuck, Angela Lee Pucci, Jillian Turecki, Dr. Jordan Feigenbaum, Dr. Darren Candow, Dr. Sue Varma, Evy Poumpouras, Dr Casey Means, Renee Deehan, Dr Chris Palmer, Dr Charles Brenner, Dr Joe Zundell

Well, there is such a supplement, it's been around a long time, and it isn't even expensive. It's creatine. Here to unpack the myths, benefits, and recommended ways to use creatine is Darren Candow, a professor of exercise physiology and nutrition who supervises the Aging Muscle and Bone Health Laboratory at the University of Regina. Darren specializes in studying creatine and has published over 70 papers on the subject. Today on the show, Darren explains how a supplement often associated with bodybuilders may actually be beneficial for just about everyone — athletes and non-athletes and the young and old alike. He unpacks what creatine does in the body, and how its benefits extend beyond the body and into the brain. He offers recommendations on the formulation of creatine to use, a suggested dosage and whether it should increase with age, and how to avoid the bloating effect. He also shares what we know about creatine's safety, including its effects on the kidneys, and whether it can cause hair loss.Resources Related to the PodcastAoM Article: Creatine — A Primer on Its Benefits and UseAoM Article: A Primer On Muscle-Building Supplements — Which Work and Which Don't?AoM Podcast #878: The Fitness Supplements That Actually WorkAoM Podcast #585: Inflammation, Saunas, and the New Science of DepressionAoM Podcast #852: The Brain Energy Theory of Mental IllnessDarren's studiesConnect With Darren CandowDarren's faculty pageDarren on IG

On today's solo episode....Neurodegeneration and brain aging affect millions worldwide, with numbers expected to triple by 2050. While pharmaceuticals offer limited solutions, lifestyle choices, especially exercise and diet, are vital for brain health.Study 1: Chronic Inflammation and Cognitive Performance The CARDIA study tracked inflammation in young adults and found chronic inflammation can impair midlife cognitive performance. Participants with high CRP levels were significantly more likely to have poor processing speed and executive function. Early management of inflammation is crucial for cognitive health.Study 2: Smoking and Cognitive Decline A Nature Communications study of 32,000 adults revealed smoking accelerates cognitive decline by up to 85% over 10 years. Smokers who adopted healthy behaviors like exercise and socializing had cognitive decline rates similar to non-smokers, highlighting the importance of quitting smoking and healthy living.Study 3: Diets Rich in Omega-3s and Antioxidants A study found older adults with diets rich in omega-3s, antioxidants, and vitamins show slower brain aging and better cognitive function. Nutrients like alpha-linolenic acid, EPA, lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin E, and choline are crucial for brain health, emphasizing the role of diet in cognitive maintenance.Sponsors:ZocDoc- Use code NEURO - https://www.zocdoc.com/neuroBioProtein Technology - Use code LOUISA to save 10% - https://www.bioproteintech.com/shop/biopro-plus-cortisleepStudies:1. With two copies of this gene, you can double your risk of developing this devastating condition, proving that life isn't always fair. Even if you don't have the gene, aging still increases your chances, making it seem like no matter what you do, Alzheimer's will still creep up on you. But don't lose hope - animal studies have found that heat shock proteins can at least offer some protection against it. When you think of muscle mass in women, does your brain immediately jump to the image of ultra-muscled competitors and quote-unquote meatheads? Building muscle mass as a female athlete does not look like this image most of the time, yet women are still afraid of getting bulky. In this episode, I want to dive into what building muscle mass as a woman really looks like and the massive benefits for your overall health and longevity that can come from it. Key Takeaways If You Want to Get Deeper Into the Conversation Around Muscle Mass, You Should: Stop letting society tell you that you should be afraid of getting ‘too bulky' Dive deeper into the topics touched on in this episode  Learn and explore how muscle mass can improve your longevity and quality of life Muscle is More than Aesthetics For so long, the conversation around muscle mass has stopped at the aesthetic value. But the truth is, building muscle as a female athlete, especially a female athlete over 40, is about so much more than aesthetics. I want to challenge this conversation and urge you to dig deeper into the benefits that building muscle mass and getting strong can have for you. Building muscle mass can help with your insulin sensitivity, boost your bone strength, enhance your longevity and quality of life, decrease the risk of falls, improve your cognitive health and cardiovascular function, and much more. It's time for the conversation around muscle mass to focus on those things, rather than just the aesthetic value of muscle. Quality of Life Matters Longevity is one of the key benefits of building muscle mass. But I don't just mean longevity in terms of living to 120 without the functionality or independence you want in order to live your life fully. I am talking about an all-encompassing longevity that not only maintains and improves your quality of life but gives you the confidence to keep going.  When it comes to muscle mass in females, the benefits are so far beyond the exterior. If you are looking for a way to preserve your freedom, gain confidence, improve your quality of life, and age in a way that makes you look and feel good, strength training is crucial to your success. Are you ready to dive deeper into muscle mass than what lies on the surface? Share your thoughts with me in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode Understanding why some women are afraid of muscle and lifting heavy (4:44) Different roles that muscle mass plays which can be associated with longevity (6:47) The broad role your metabolism plays in relationship with your muscle tissue (10:09) How your muscle mass can regulate your blood sugar levels and insulin sensitivity (12:23) Why your adolescence can have a significant impact on your menopause transition (14:31) Quotes “When it comes down to things, we have to build muscle if we want to experience some kind of sculpting or toning or any of that.” (2:35) “The conversation, in my opinion, is lacking some of the deeper reasons why muscle plays very crucial roles in the body, and how those are associated with longevity.” (6:02) “Our capacity to move through life, to do those activities of daily living, to perform physical exercise, which is also a very clear health-promoting habit. Those are associated with better longevity and improved quality of life.” (8:57) “It is really important to lean on things like exercise, or specifically strength training or resistance training, to help us improve our insulin sensitivity. Exercise is a really important tool in your toolbox.” (13:55) “We've talked about here mobility and physical activity, the sit-to-stand test, why this matters for discussions of quality of life, overall wellbeing, independence, being able to have mobility, and complete activities of daily living as well as physical exercise.” (18:21) Featured on the Show Apply for Strength Nutrition Unlocked Here Full Show Notes Follow Steph on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTube | Pinterest I'd really love it if you would take 1 min and leave us a rating and review on iTunes! One of the best-researched supplements in terms of muscle strength and performance worldwide is creatine monohydrate. But recent developments in the scientific research world show there are a lot of other benefits that creatine can give you, especially when it comes to health from your neck and up. Cognition, mood, memory, and so much more are proving to be the next big thing in creatine research. Key Takeaways If You Want to Utilize All the Benefits of Creatine, You Should: Ensure that you are combining creating with resistance training in order to see results Dose in a way that supports both your overall brain and body health Don't stress about the myths you have heard about creatine supplementation The Godfather of Creatine Research, Dr. Darren Candow Dr. Darren Candow, Ph.D., CSEP-CEP, is a Professor and Director of the Aging Muscle and Bone Health Laboratory in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies at the University of Regina, Canada. The overall objectives of Dr. Candow's internationally renowned research program are to develop effective lifestyle interventions involving nutrition (primarily creatine monohydrate) and physical activity (resistance training), which have practical and clinical relevance for improving musculoskeletal aging and reducing the risk of falls and fractures. Understanding the Many Benefits of Creatine Most people know that your muscle content will increase when you combine creatine and resistance training. But what about the effects that creatine has on the brain? Creatine works best when your brain is stressed. This means that supplementing creatine for brain health has been shown to reduce depression and anxiety, reduce concussion symptoms, improve immune system function, and more.  Supplementing creatine while combining it with exercise creates the potential for bone and brain health improvements, and the research proves it. The Proof is in the Research While the effects of creatine supplementation on the brain have only recently started to be explored, the research is very promising. In fact. Dr. Candow believes that creatine is going to be an interesting supplement to study for the next 50 years, given its wide-reaching benefits. The benefits of creatine are not just opinions. This is why I feel it is important for you to hear from Dr. Candow, so you can get a first-hand understanding of why there is a potential possibility for so many clinical applications when it comes to creatine. It is an exciting time to be diving into the world of creatine supplementation; join us! What interests you most about the benefit of creatine supplementation for the body and the mind? I think anybody on the planet, I am really struggling to think of anyone on the planet who would not benefit from creatine in some form or another.” (11:36) “We can conclude that basically, if you are 18 years of age and above, creatine and resistance training will decrease fat a little amount, and it will not increase it, which has the implications for avoiding a lot of chronic diseases later in life.” (24:26) “Creatine acts as a neurotransmitter and reduces oxidative stress. And individuals with a diagnosis of depression, anxiety, or maybe even PTSD, have a reduction naturally in brain creatine content. So if you can give them more creatine through their diet or supplementation, that has been shown to have some promise by decreasing depressive symptoms.” (37:35) “I would guess we will be looking at creatine and the brain for the next 50 years, just given the infancy of it.” (40:56) “Creatine is the sprinkle or the cherry on the cake, and that cake is exercise… the magic of creatine is unlocked when you combine it with exercise.” (43:52) Featured on the Show Apply for Strength Nutrition Unlocked Here Creatine Study Full Show Notes Follow Steph on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTube | Pinterest I'd really love it if you would take 1 min and leave us a rating and review on iTunes!
