Ever wonder what could happen if you simply said yes to life? My guest Kimberly Braun invites us on her journey to discover the transformative power of embracing life's opportunities. Uncover her pivotal childhood experience of deep presence and how it shaped her worldview towards living from divine love. Alongside us, explore the concept that we are all here for a noble purpose, and the magic that happens when we let our love and curiosity for life break us free from our limitations. Life doesn't come with a script, and Kimberly shows us that embracing each moment as a potential lesson can lead us to a deeper understanding of our human experience. The conversation turns to moments of silence and presence, and how these moments can become transformative. Kimberly shares her personal story of building a monastery from a moment of silence, reminding us of the importance of being open to the universe's synchronicities and order. Our journey culminates in an exploration of inner stillness and surrender. Listen as Kimberly recounts her profound realization that she spoke about on her TED Talk and how surrendering to her core desires led to the creation of a permanent monastery. We discuss the challenges that arise after saying yes to a desire, and practices to stay committed, such as drawing close to inspiration and tapping into the infinite field of intelligence. This conversation promises to be an eye-opener on the power of surrender and the magic that unfolds when we stay true to our core desires. ⠀

Hi Friends. Matt Whitney here. I thought for the podcast I would do a reading of a reflection I wrote for our SDI Listen publication, which comes out quarterly. It's about something Henri Nouwen wrote in his book The Inner Voice of Love. I hope you enjoy the reading, and the written reflection is below. SDI has thousands of spiritual directors, companions, guides, and teachers who are available to work with you, listen to you, and accompany you on your spiritual journey. Find one to work with today at sdicompanions.org. --- I recently took a short backpacking trip in the North Cascades of Washington State. I like to have an author accompany me while sipping my instant coffee in the morning or curling up in my sleeping bag at night. This trip, I brought with me Henri Nouwen's The Inner Voice of Love, described on the back cover as his “secret journal” – written during a period of intense doubt, low self-esteem, anguish, and despair. Nouwen writes with great clarity and purpose, and I was moved reading his intimate sharing. In one entry, he writes of our need to share our struggles, pain, and anguish with others, so that need may be affirmed and acknowledged. Indeed, Nouwen continues, our suffering can be of service to others, when shared judiciously, and with caution. Nouwen says, “You will always need people who do not need you but who can receive you and give you back to yourself.” I was struck – what a beautiful description of spiritual companionship, encapsulating the essence, calling, and profound gifts of spiritual companionship! I'm in my sixth year working for SDI. During this time, I've had countless conversations with folks about our work as spiritual directors and companions. Sometimes these discussions are easy, but more often context is necessary for those unfamiliar with our modalities. So, I describe our practices of deep listening, contemplation, and compassionate service, in service to helping others on their own unique spiritual journeys. These approaches help us all to recall and behold our deep, and innate, connection with God, The Divine, The Universe, or however we might each name The Ground of All Being. Let's contemplate this together – how are each of us received by someone “who does not need us,” and who “gives us back to ourselves?” What does it mean that someone needs nothing from us? Let's start with the fact that we have many relationships in life, with varying degrees of responsibilities and obligations. As a partner and a parent, I have a responsibility to be loving and caring to my spouse, and my son. If we are friends, it's important that we find fun things to do together, as well as help each other out in our struggles, or even with more mundane tasks such as moving or working on a house project. Professional colleagues pool their efforts in common causes and purposes. And so on. All of these relationships can blossom as we get to know one another, and become more intimate over time. Perhaps eventually to the point of finding safety and comfort in sharing our spirituality with each other. After all, mutuality and reciprocity are the most precious gifts of our relationships. We give as much as we get. One question I often hear in response to my own descriptions of a spiritual companion is: “why can't that person just be an intimate partner, or a good friend?” To which I respond, “On occasion, they can be!” But what I have found, and I imagine you may have as well, is that our sufferings and longings are too intimate, too delicate, and too easily misunderstood by even our partners and closest friends. Within us may be truths so hidden that we don't know how to properly speak of them. This can become problematic if we are tempted to overshare, as it may confuse or even become a burden to those whom we live and work with. As it turns out, our colleagues, friends, and partners actually need quite a bit from us – as does every good relationship. This includes the inevitable need to be selective, and even guarded, in sharing our most intimate spiritual selves. Conversely, though a partner or friend might mean well, they are likely not attuned to the deep listening that would be most helpful to us. They may want to correct us, solve our problems, and make us feel better. The intentions are good, but these responses can be awkward, even harmful, to understanding our unique journeys. You will always need people who do not need you but who can receive you and give you back to yourself. - Henri Nouwen Illustrated by Matt Whitney This is what Nouwen means by “need.” Our partners need us to be loving, contributing partners. Our colleagues need us to be productive and helpful. Our friends need us to be…friends. They also need us to be complete and caring people in their lives. On the other hand, a spiritual companion doesn't need us at all in these ways. They don't require our service or assistance. When I meet with mine, I don't need to dress nicely, or pretend that I'm in a good mood. I arrive just as I am, with all my “baggage.” This is a great gift and a huge relief! Nouwen adds that a spiritual companion “gives us back to ourselves.” As we all notice the tangles of our busy lives, and the anxieties and fears we carry, we eventually realize there are things deep within us that yearn and long in ways we may not be able to properly name. A spiritual companion can give us uninhibited safe space to untangle and declutter the surface of our lives, such that the depths within us can be excavated. Much like clearing weeds from a garden, these depths are given air to breathe and light to reveal. A spiritual companion can give us uninhibited safe space to untangle and declutter the surface of our lives, such that the depths within us can be excavated. Much like clearing weeds from a garden, these depths are given air to breathe and light to reveal. Many of the world's spiritual traditions speak of the True Self. This True Self is our Spiritual Essence, the Child of God, Transcendent Awareness, the Eternal Self, The Ground of Our Being. This depth is you – the real You that spiritual companionship gives back to us! There is much work we must all do to discover our True Nature: learning to integrate our pain, understanding our suffering, and alchemizing these into the living wisdom that weaves itself through all of us eternally. Though my descriptions of spiritual companionship change depending on the conversation, I always say: “Everyone should work with a spiritual companion.” This includes you! If spiritual companionship is not part of your routine of care, I encourage you to check out our Find a Spiritual Companion Directory. Spend some time researching potential Spiritual Directors, Companions, and Guides to work with, and connect with a few. They are the kindest folks I know and typically offer free introductory sessions if you ask. And may you find a person who needs nothing from you, but can receive you, and give you back to yourself. --- Support for SDI Encounters comes from THE CENTER FOR SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT, WHICH INVITES YOU TO AN ONLINE BIOSPIRITUAL FOCUSING BOOK STUDY. Welcome to episode 43 of The Way Out Is In: The Zen Art of Living, a podcast series mirroring Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh's deep teachings of Buddhist philosophy: a simple yet profound methodology for dealing with our suffering, and for creating more happiness and joy in our lives. In the last podcast recording of 2022, the presenters – Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and journalist Jo Confino – are joined by Zen Buddhist nun Sister Jina (the special guest in episode 14, ‘I Have Arrived, I Am Home; What a Blessing'). Together, they discuss loneliness, and how the Buddha's teachings and Plum Village practices and exercises can help us come back to ourselves, and feel connected and part of life. The three also share moments of loneliness from different points in their lives. Sister Jina (Sister Dieu Nghiem, translated as Sister True Wonder) further shares about coming home to oneself; creating self-compassion; people’s fears about looking inside themselves for answers; and learning from our mistakes. Brother Phap Huu shares about Thich Nhat Hanh's view of happiness, gratitude, and on identifying the goodness in life; ignoring our suffering; connecting to our true self; the temptation to retell stories of our suffering; the void and taking care of our wellness; learning to forgive; learning to be flexible; the practice of touching the earth; tree hugging; and silence. Jo shares about feeling worthless and lonely in front of 400 people; reaching out to others when suffering from loneliness; learning to love oneself; gifting presence to ourselves and others; and interbeing. The episode ends with a short meditation guided by Brother Phap Huu. “We send our hearts out to you and hope that this conversation has brought some balm to your lives, and that over this period of days and weeks you find a sense of peace, a sense of calm, a sense of rootedness, and a sense of love and gratitude for yourself.”See you in the new year! And it created an imbalance in my life: rather than thinking I had something to give and offer because I felt strong in myself, I was always looking for other people to mirror my existence.” “Sometimes when you’re suffering from real loneliness, reach out and be vulnerable and share and allow the love and support of other people to come in.” “We’re in a time of what’s supposed to be great connection; we’re all connected, but that connection is very often [on the] surface and is leading to more disconnection.” “In my orientation, I always guide and I always invite people at the retreat to learn to be a friend with their breath, because that breath accompanies you to the west, to the east, to the north, to the south, inside, outside. As long as you are there, that breath will be with you. And the more you are connected to the breath, the more you learn to guide your mind home to your body, then you have a chance to cultivate your mind.” “We have the view that being together is [only about] being with humans. But in our practice, we start to learn that being together is also [being] with nature, it’s also [being] with the conditions around you. Thay would teach us every morning to be grateful for one thing: ‘When you wake up and you see the sunrise; be grateful for that.' You’re not alone. The sunrise is there for you.” “Happiness is a very big word, but in the Zen tradition and in Plum Village, Thay talked about happiness as something as simple as having a cup of tea: feeling the warmth, seeing companions, seeing I’m not alone, and starting to train the mind [to see] that I have goodness inside of me, I have happiness inside of me, I have joy inside of me, I have peace inside of me. I can touch that, even though it’s not long-lasting. But peace is available. So the first steps, and the first attention and awareness that we are taught to identify, is the goodness in life, inside of us and around us. And what’s interesting is that it is very easy to have gratitude for things outside of us. [But] it takes a little bit more effort to have gratitude for oneself.” “Sometimes we get so lost in our practice or in that present moment, and Thay had a very funny, quirky side, so he would ask one of his students, ‘What moment is this?' And the right answer would be, ‘This is a happy moment.' Sometimes we just need to be reminded to show up for ourselves; only when we show up for ourselves we can truly show up for others.” “We also have to forgive ourselves. This forgiving is a journey, because when we forgive ourselves, we may also be forgiving our ancestors or our parents, who inflicted suffering to us, our society that inflicted suffering on us. And so this forgiving oneself has another layer that is unseen: learning to meet the other conditions, and forgiving, and recognizing them, embracing and transforming them, and letting them go. And when we say let go, it doesn’t mean they are not there anymore, but we’re not attached to them anymore because we, as practitioners, want to learn to be more free, because freedom is an element of self-love.” “I am as I am because of causes and conditions. And who am I to judge other people? What are their dreams? What are their hopes? What are their fears? And so I think the issue is not the other people; it’s inside of me – and that’s good because I can do something about it.”

The Ground of Our Being by St. Simons Presbyterian Podcast
20.. “…Ah, so. How can I help?” The combined mantras “…Ah, so.”* And “How can I help?”** this morning fell heavy on my heart. Contemplating stars from a hammock on the patio, time spent with the Cosmos is becoming a lost art. Gravity fools us that we're looking up and not out. But in reality, we are looking off from Earth's side. Is Anyone out there hearing our shouts? Humanity's drowning in all the ways we divide. Meditating outside, just before first light. You realize if we could see every star clear, they would fill up the whole of our sight. Looking off from the side of this sphere, makes me wonder what's the meaning of Our Being here? Stars, fill the sky as pin holes on a backlit canopy, but Infinity is infinite in both directions. And egoic-appetites will remain, our collective fantasy, until we surrender to the present moment's connections. Allow those mantras to become an aura, a belt. And meet moments with “…Ah, so. How can I help?” *Zen Master Hakuin (1686-1769) a paraphrasing. **Saint Teresa of Avila (1515-1582) a paraphrasing. This is a Living Voice Sharing ('podcast') around what Holistic Immunity is. We've been conditioned into believing our 'immunity' to be a somewhat binary reactive process - something that some folks are blessed with, but ultimately a relatively flimsy veil between us and an ever-aggressive external reality, which wants to devour our frail physical body from the inside out! Having transformed my own Health and Holistic Well-Being, and stepped into Sovereignty of my Time, Energy and Thinking, I have a wider, Living View of Immunity. I Know True Immunity as a Relationship far Greater than the point where our senses touch the air and affect each other. Stepping Ever-Deeper Into Sovereignty, We Naturally Align in Symbiosis with our Environment through Natural Law, and thus we come into Creative Union with All Things around us. 'Immunity' then becomes Inseparable from a Whole Spectrum of Discernment; We Are Able to Gravitate to or from Things that We Need to Nourish Us. We Are Able to Effortlessly Avoid That Which is Harm-Full to Us. We Are Able to Efficiently Digest What Passes Across the Threshold of Our Being, and Let Go Of Any Thing That is Toxic or Not Use-Full. A 'lack of immunity' in the perceived-immune-'system' will always be illustrated across the Layers of Our Life: Our Sovereignty is Always Fully Ours, Even When We are 'obbligated' or 'coerced' into 'giving it away'. The State of Our Well-Ness is often an indicator of How Distorted We've been 'manipulated' into 'being'. But Our Body-Mind-Spirit is Always Communing Perfectly with Divine Intelligence/ Great Spirit/ God, and Is Also Always Communicatng Perfectly Clearly With Us. Our Work in All Of This, Is To Fully Be Present in Whole Self - which does involve a fair bit of deconditioning, dearmouring and unwinding of Truth, but Every Sacred Step of Which is A Step Out Of Distortion and Into Bliss. Those Are The Facts As I Know Them, In Natural Law. Hello my name is John and you are most welcome to this weeks episode of The Prayer Path. For this weeks prayer I am using a meditation prepared by Diane Rutter of Contemplative Fire (https://contemplativefire.org/). It draws upon the wisdom phrase of Christian Mystic Meister Eckhart where he refers to the Divine, whom Eckhart names as God, as the Ground of Our Being. As you prepare to set out on your Prayer Path journey today I am inviting you to settle yourself in a posture that will enable you to feel, preferably your bare feet, firmly planted on the ground. This of course is your choice, being comfortable and at ease is much more a priority. When you have concluded your Prayer Path journey I would really appreciate it if you could take a moment to maybe use the voice message function and leave any comments or reflections about your experience on The Prayer Path. If you like The Prayer Path please do hit the like button, share it with others who you think might like it and subscribe to receive all future Prayers. The Prayer Path is now available on multiple platforms including iTunes, Spotify and Google Podcasts and you will also find The Prayer Path on FB(@PrayerPath1), Instagram (@PrayerPath1) and Twitter (The Prayer Path #ThePrayerPath) Thank you for visiting The Prayer Pat. May the peace and love of The Divine be always with you and your loved ones and the whole of creation. Till you join me next time on The Prayer Path. Good Bye. Most of us need some convincing about how our careers are spiritual. Some of us think work is the four-letter word that we must do to make a living. It is a human necessity, nothing to do with our spiritual selves. It would be wrong not to see some connection between who we are and how that manifests in our work lives. Who we are, our being-ness ought to be reflected in what we do for a living. Our BEING informs our doing and having. Our BEING begins the process of self-discovery. It is unlike doing that is often a consequence of necessity. Each of us deserves to be engaged with our work in a way that allows for the greatest sense of fulfillment and purpose. We could gain this awareness through meditation or simply getting quiet long enough to listen to the awareness that wants to communicate with us. It won't be the chatter of our thinking mind, but rather what will come from a deeper place (we all have this access, even if we have never experienced it). There is so much to be gained in our embracing this awareness. Consider your happiness and success with your work. Give it a try, believe in it. Believe in yourself!

Transformation~Any resistance to life’s natural flow of evolution will result in our own suffering. We are all transforming at a more rapid rate than ever before. Our world is shifting on a planetary level. We are shifting on National and international levels. Our world appears to be in massive upheaval … systems are being fully revealed and are breaking down. Climate shifts are in real time expression across the entire planet. Times are changing. We are also changing. If we resist the changes by holding onto our old behaviors and patterns, we suffer. Life only works for us when we are in its flow. Life is an expanse of time whence growth or evolution may occur. It is a combination of experiences that allow us to expand in our own understanding. Essentially, it offers the possibility of leading us home to the truth of our being where the sense of separation is dissolved and the recognition of our oneness with all of life is revealed. There is no evolution of the true being. It is always pure harmony, peace, love, true understanding, and fulfillment itself, the source of creation. Therefore the journey of evolution is that of the person/mind. Every journey inevitably leads to the same destination, The Truth of Our Being. We begin as the Truth of Our Being and as the mind evolves, it takes us on the journey of seeing through eyes of separation, we then through our experiences evolve along the way. This evolution is always offering the recognition of oneness, arriving at our original destination which was from whence we came forth. Did the true being disappear upon our journey? No, It is the source of the journey itself. It is simply hidden from view by the distracting veil of our thoughts. It has always been here, constant, eternal, knowing. To return home is to but clear out all that we are not that simply distracts us from the truth: the truth of our being. … These transformative times are simply a call to return home. Returning home is a choice. The doorway is found in listening; in the silence of our own heart. choosing to keep our awareness on the contents of our mind simply prolongs the journey of the person. Are we willing to set the mind aside? Are we willing to discover what is here beyond the mind and its stories? Are we willing to return home? These times are offering us the greatest transformation possible. The transformation from our little limited human personalities to the recognition of the limitless Power, Peace, and Fulfillment of our own being. THE TRUTH OF EMPTINESS~As we practice being Present for longer periods of meditation, we will discover a state of emptiness. The silent receptivity that we allow ourselves to rest in can appear as a state of nothingness. The mind will claim this and make it our experience initially. In other words, there will appear to be NOTHING here for us. But the truth of the matter is that this nothingness or Emptiness is the doorway to our own Soul: The Truth of Our Being. If we can remain loyal and receptive in our periods of emptiness cosistently, we will find that one day we begin noticing the tangible effects of this practice. We will find we are experiencing greater peace, less resistance to life, less reactivity to circumstances as they arise. Not too far into this practice, we will notice that things begin to come to us that we did not seek out or even ask for; but needed. We may find that those around us also become more patient and kind in our Presence. People in our lives who have not been supportive may suddenly be taken out of our lives. We may even find that our work begins to shift, or we are being offered new opportunities that we had not imagined. That which is within us has been activated and begins to support us. Provides an introduction to the Gnostic work, The Pistis Sophia. Explains the 13 Aeons, the Three Triple Powers, the Three Spaces, the Treasury of the Light, Yaldabaoth, the Self-willed, the Lion faced light power, all in relation to the creation of the universe and the path of initiation. A quote from the lecture: "Amazing as it may sound, our Being has an essential quality of emptiness. That sounds very strange to us, but the Absolute is an abstract space, and that is where our Being comes from. Our Being manifests into forms... if our Being has the capacity to manifest in any form, it must be beyond form. It is empty of form. No form contains it."

ArchiTreats: Food for Thought celebrates the Year of Alabama History through a series of sequential lectures in Alabama history by leading experts in the field. Join us as Leah Rawls Atkins presents Shaking the Foundations: Alabama in the 1930s and 1940s. This presentation was held at the Alabama Department of Archives and History. The Great Depression and World War II were watershed years for the state of Alabama. From the poverty and despair of the most severe economic depression in American history, the state began to emerge from the hard times to prosper from the billion-dollar economic development that poured into Alabama to finance defense and, later, war industries and military bases. Alabama took a leadership role in preparing the nation for war and training and supplying troops. From air bases, such as Maxwell Field, to forts such as Fort McClellan, to military camps, such as Camp Rucker; to the steel mills of Birmingham and the Port of Mobile ship-building operations; to the men and women who volunteered; from the aluminum plants to the explosives plants, Alabama was a vital cog in the nation’s defense. The driving forces in these years shook the foundations of politics and society, forcing Alabama to face challenges in a new world. Dr. Leah Rawls Atkins retired in 1995 after a decade with Auburn University’s Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts & Humanities, where she directed four major NEH-funded librarybased public programs: “The Civil War: Crossroads of Our Being,” “World War II: Home Front/ War Fronts,” “Reading Our Lives: Southern Autobiography,” and “Read Alabama!” She taught history at Auburn and at Samford University. She was the secretary of the Alabama Historical Association (AHA) and has served as president of both the AHA and the Association of Alabama Historians. She was on the founding board of the Friends of the Archives, and she presently serves on the board of the Archives and History Foundation and the Cahaba Foundation, which is devoted to preserving the site of Alabama’s first capital. She has authored and a co-authored many works including Alabama: The History of a Deep South State and a fourth-grade Alabama history textbook. Her centennial history of the Alabama Power Company won AHA’s Sulzby Award in 2006. This ArchiTreats presentation is made possible by the Friends of the Alabama Archives and a grant from the Alabama Humanities Foundation, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The public is invited to bring a sack lunch and enjoy a bit of Alabama history. Coffee and tea will be provided by the Friends of the Alabama Archives. For more information, call (334) 353-4712.
