An episode that tries to make it make sense. In Episode 124 of The Autistic Culture Podcast, “Justice for Victor,” we confront the tragic police killing of 17-year-old autistic Puerto Rican teen Victor Perez and the systemic failures that led to his death. Centering voices from the Black neurodivergent community, this powerful conversation demands a reimagining of autistic justice beyond white-centered narratives. This episode is a call to action for the autism and neurodiversity movements to prioritize true equity, accountability, and liberation for all. Here's what we cover in today's episode: * In this powerful and somber episode, Angela is joined by Black autistic advocates Faith Clarke and Darren Calhoun to discuss the heart breaking murder of Victor Perez, a non-speaking autistic Puerto Rican teenager.* On April 5th, Victor Perez—a 17-year-old autistic, disabled Puerto Rican teen—was shot by police in his own front yard. He is no longer with us. And now, his family is left to grieve in a system that failed him at every level.* Darren Calhoun is a justice advocate, worship leader, and photographer based in Chicago. He's the co-host of the Second Sunday podcast, and his work bridges communities across race, gender, and neurodivergence. Darren is a powerful voice for intersectionality and faith-based inclusion, and he's someone who speaks truth with clarity and compassion.* Faith Clarke wrote her best selling book Parenting Like a Ninja with Angela and it was based in part on her experience as a business owner and mom of a non-speaking autistic son (and a couple of other neurodivergent humans too).* We are especially grateful to Tiffany Hammond who you might remember from our Monster's High episode a couple of weeks ago — whose writing on her fidgets and fries Instagram in response to Victor's death called me into deeper reflection. Her words were a turning point for us.* Victor's Go Fund Me: https://www.gofundme.com/f/justice-for-victor-perez“quotes”Victor is not the first. He joins a growing list of young, Black and Brown neurodivergent lives—Stephon Watts. Elijah McClain. Ryan Gainer.Their stories demand justice. This episode is about what happened. What should have happened. And what needs to happen next—if we truly want a movement that's rooted in liberation for all of us. Hello Brave Friends! Welcome to today's story episode, #188. These are true stories from a moment in the life of a caregiving parent. We hear a crafted story, and then have a conversation with our guests that goes deeper into their experience.Today's guest is Joanne De Simone, and she's a graduate of Hunter College in New York with degrees in dance and special education. She has two sons, one with a rare brain malformation and one on the autism spectrum. She's also an author with a book out now called Fall and Recovery: Raising Children with Disabilities through Lessons Learned in Dance. The story she shares is about her experience being in public with her child on the autism spectrum. There are so many things that we love about Joanne's story but one big one is that this is a moment so many of us can relate to. We've all been in public and we've seen that stranger scowl. Haven't we? We've all experienced that incredible discomfort when our child starts to melt down, act out, or just act in the way that they act that's different from everyone else. Our interview goes deep into Joanne's journey, working with the school district to get the right services for her children. She has some really great insights, being a special educator herself about how to talk to educators. She also shares about how the lessons she learned in dance can be applied to her life as a caregiver today. I really think you're going to get a lot out of our conversation. Unfortunately, we don't even realize how we've simply accepted many of these parenting myths and attitudes as truth, despite the mounds of scientific evidence to the contrary. He lives in North Carolina in the US and these children come from different backgrounds and walks of life. This is something that gets him regularly noticed when he's out with his family- he's a black man in America raising white children. Peter was drawn to fostering and adoption because of what happened to him as a child. He was born in rural Uganda and lived in poverty without money for food, clothes or school. He ran away from home when he was 10 years old and became a homeless street kid in the capital Kampala. Africa Daily's Alan Kasujja spoke to Peter about growing as a vulnerable child in Uganda, life in the US and why he decided to parent so many children.

Welcome back to me! We are starting a new season with episodes discussing one of my favorite topics: parenting. I have two young kids. Parenting keeps me humble, on my knees, and on verge of tears and laughter (at the same time!)! My husband and I, for sure, mess up a lot... so we have a lot of opportunities to reflect on our training, our values, and our childhood... to think about how we want to parent our kids. Giving my children the childhood I wanted and needed is one of my reasons to live. I want parents to benefit from my reflections and convictions (from my mistakes and hurts) so their children will thrive as well. So subscribe and stay tuned as episodes pop up. I have special guests (like my kids!) in mind so I know you don't want to miss those! Love you all,Dr. Kim

Here's what we cover with Dr. Hamby in this interview: Dr. Hamby shares about his experience as a shepherd and the lessons he learned about parenting from that time. How tragic death and miraculous births in his flock taught him to parent like a shepherd. How can we restore our relationship with our kids even when they hate us and it seems like all hope is lost. How applying lessons on humility and grace ended up saving his family, his sheep, and his health.  "If you prepare your children to search for wisdom more than hidden treasure and more than silver and gold, you will understand the fear of the Lord, find the knowledge of God, and knowledge will become pleasant to your soul." - Dr. Mark Hamby For over 30 years, Dr. Mark Hamby has been using stories of Christ-like character to offer Christ-centered hope around the world. Dr. Hamby is the founder and president of Lamplighter Ministries which has published over 235 books from 17th to 19th-century literature plus 28 audio dramas heard by millions across 30 countries. Styles of parenting have a way of stirring up conflict like few other things. Perhaps that's because parenting is so real. We've all been parented - for better or worse - and many of us are parents. Most of us will be - again, for better or worse. In today's episode, we have Patricia Lewis on to share about an alternative to the traditional fundamentalist spanking-centered approach. Patricia is a mom herself, with training as a foster parent and as a special ed teacher. Titus is a parent of three children, three and under. It gets real and practical. Are you tired of all the parenting books full of strategic checklists, how-to advice and quick tips? While some of the books are actually really helpful, Christina Fox, Sharon Betters and young mom Melissa Weisenfels talk through what it means to parent through the grid of how our heavenly father parents us, His children. They touch on questions like: How can a better understanding of God's character, i.e. His consistency, discipline, patience, provision, unconditional love, and even boundaries give us a roadmap for helping our children navigate the comparison trap, rebellion against boundaries, and more. But they also talk about their own feelings of failure and how to live with a broken heart when children reject their faith. Christina encourages us that as God's beloved creatures, we bear His image—that is, we show others who He is as we glorify Him. Is anything more important to pass on to our children than this?

Nobody is perfect by any means. We all have to learn how to communicate, instead of just blowing up. When you have kids, that kind of just ups the ante. We're not just navigating each other. We have to work together to raise children. When we started fostering, that's just super next level, because all of a sudden, people are coming in your house all the time. They're asking really personal questions. They're judging you in certain ways, but they have to judge and make sure everything is good. There's a lot of behaviors that come with some of the kiddos that we had, that made parenting even more difficult. The main point: Communication is Key. I'm doing all the business steps just in my own way. And it's working, that's great. Because I don't feel like I'm forcing anything, or trying to fit myself into, what it should look like. When we have children, and we have an idea of who they are, and they pivot on us - that's the thing with parenting is like, we have to just allow and be there to support them just like our clients, wherever they're going. And without having an agenda of what it should look like. Oh, you said you were going to do this, and now you're doing this or anything like that. It's just it gets to be like, we can do it for ourselves too. Okay, I said I was gonna do this. But now I want to change over here into this. Today we had a conversation about parenting our mixed race- Black children in this season. We start by reflecting on how we thought about parenting when we began our family and discuss how things have changed over 8+ years and since the murder of George Floyd. Russell shares his experience of growing up with a mother who looked white and a step mother who is white and what it's been like to move from being a Black boy with white looking moms to being a Black dad with white looking children. We unpack some of the challenges our oldest daughter has already faced experiencing racism at 7 years old and the impact of our family's estrangement from Selah's family of origin which began with us confronting racism. We conclude with a message of encouragement for all parents and those who have the chance to show up and impact our children's lives. This episode is sponsored by: www.AxeusTravel.com

“You have to keep the kids at the pinnacle of the decision-making. They are the true north.” --Merry Senn   This week on The 3D Parent Podcast, I'm discussing co-parenting with special guests Merry and Ashley Senn. Merry and Ashley are good friends of mine from the theater community. They have been married for just over five years. They live in Edmonds WA and share 2 boys Calvin (12) and Sawyer (9). Years of friendship and couplehood have led them to begin their own podcast, Your Friends Ash & Mer. They have honest and mostly hysterical conversations about marriage, parenthood, and making it through this life together. The highlight of their show is when Ash & Mer talk to their incredible friends from every facet of their life and bring their unique and incredible stories to their podcast listeners. They are great examples of people who make co-parenting look easy, despite its challenges.   We will go over topics such as: Common challenges of co-parenting Navigating family transitions and custody arrangements Tools parents can use to make co-parenting easier   Merry and Ashley say that keeping their children at the pinnacle of their decision-making is crucial. If you keep their best interests at heart, then the best decisions will be made. Co-parenting is challenging, but with good communication and strategy, it is manageable.    If you have enjoyed this episode of the podcast, take a screenshot, head on over to Instagram and share it your IG stories and tag me, @the3Dparent    Do you have a parenting question for an upcoming episode?
