Dr. Marie Morgan brings a powerful, holistic perspective to wellness that goes far beyond the physical. In this episode, we talk about how her background in psychology, PT, and wellness education has shaped her approach to community health. From building successful wellness initiatives in “physical activity deserts” to creating sustainable programs funded by local and national grants, Dr. Morgan shares her experience turning data-driven insights into real-world change. We explore how PTs are uniquely positioned to lead in wellness spaces, the importance of addressing social determinants of health, and how behavioral change and cultural competence are at the heart of long-term health outcomes. Whether you're a clinician, educator, or advocate for public health, this conversation is packed with strategies and inspiration to help you make a bigger impact—both in and beyond the clinic.Learn more about our guest at:
Graham Phillips Graham Phillips BPharm FRPharmS is a second generation community pharmacist. He describes himself as “The Pharmacist who Gave Up Drugs! “ Having played a very senior leadership role in the pharmacy profession he became disillusioned with the NHS one-size-fits-all approach to healthcare with its emphasis on waiting for symptoms to arise before treating (suppressing?) them with drugs. He pioneered a new approach using his scientific knowledge, clinical expertise and new technology which resulted in the ProLongevity service. The ProLongevity programme helps people who want to lose weight, improve wellbeing and avoid/reverse diabetes, by using new technology to monitor real-time blood sugar levels. We provide personalised advice based on your data to help you make changes to your diet and lifestyle. We avoid traditional approaches that treat symptoms after the damage has been done. Prevention is better than cure. Graham has two sons, one is also a pharmacist and the other a corporate lawyer. He lives with his partner, Karen (a GP also passionate about lifestyle medicine) in North London. Graham is also an ambassador for the Public Health Collaboration. He believes that the world has become dominated by Big Food on the one hand (makes you sick) and Big Pharma on the other (makes you 10% better). In the end science must prevail. Nicola Lock & Jackie Fletcher Nicola Lock was a medical secretary in the NHS for 15 years, primarily in Mental Health Services, and after having her children set up as a freelance medical transcriptionist which she has been doing for the last 20 years, mainly in private healthcare. Her interest in low carb began about 9 years ago after discovering Michael Mosley’s 8 week blood sugar diet. Over the years she had made several attempts at losing weight by following the recommended low fat, eat less/move more model, which either failed or, if she succeeded initially, she then put the weight back on and was back to square one. In the New Year of 2019 she decided to try a low carb/real food lifestyle in an attempt to lose the weight that she had once again put on over the Christmas period, and six months later had effortlessly lost about 2 stone (28 lb / 12.5 kg), which she has pretty much maintained since that time. Although she had no health issues that she was aware of, after becoming low carb she has noticed improvement in her skin as well as improved energy and mental wellbeing. Nicola has discovered an enthusiasm for learning more about this way of life and has been a member of Nutrition Network since July 2020. She has completed several of their courses including Nutrition Network Advisor, Obesity: Risks & Reversal, Ethics, Neurology and LCHF for Nurses. She is currently studying Metabolism and the Mind. Nicola has been an ambassador for the Public Health Collaboration since October 2020 and since June 2023 has been a health coach for The Lifestyle Club, which is an online programme providing education to empower people diagnosed with pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes to potentially put their condition into remission through a real food lifestyle approach. And recently Nicola has become involved with another PHC project, Liberate, which is a programme designed to help people who feel addicted to ultra processed foods. Chris Hill I’m a retired school teacher (Spanish) and Senior Leader from the state secondary sector with over 35 years teaching experience, often by choice in highly deprived areas, but I have also worked in more affluent areas too. Whilst working in schools I became more and more concerned during the latter years about how I was seeing young people eat – breakfast was often a 2 litre bottle of coke or cans of energy drink and a family size pack of Haribo or a whole packet of chocolate biscuits. This would then result in many students having massive sugar highs which they freely acknowledged. This brought poor attention span, disruptive behaviour, inability to focus on work or listen and often a massive crash in energy leading to sleepiness and lack of a willingness to do anything. This was then compounded by poor sleep due to staying up late on computer games, social media or TV. Children are experiencing the worst health crisis we have ever come across and for the first time ever are likely to live a shorter lifespan than their parents. Rates of childhood obesity, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, eating disorders and mental health problems are soaring in our children and yet no one seems to do anything about it. It’s time to put a halt to this and hence The Real Food Rebellion was born- a project that sits within the Public Health Collaboration charity. This programme is taught within the school curriculum as timetabled lessons in both Primary and Secondary sectors. We give students the knowledge to understand the difference between real food and ultra-processed food, how to read food labels correctly, how to eat and cook well on a budget and how to fight back against the tyranny of the big food companies and a government in their thrall. The pre-pilots for the first phase of the programme are currently running in a number of schools across the country and we are inviting schools to join us for the main Pilot Programme which will run in Summer 2025. I myself have struggled with an eating disorder from the age of 11 and now at age 61 am starting to feel the physical consequences of this. It stemmed from trauma, societal expectations and the incessant yoyo dieting treadmill. I wish I had known as a teen what the Real Food Rebellion is teaching children now – it could have meant a life free from food addiction and the ensuing misery it brings. If I can save just one child from a lifetime of unhealthy food and illness then that will mean more to me than all the thousands of children out there who have learnt Spanish from me at school! Link to Show Notes on Website https://fabulouslyketo.com/podcast/207. Chris’ Top Tips It is important for young people to feel loved and that they are ok as they are. Society and social media is not the be all and end all. Please eat real food and give your children real food. Do not ever go on that first diet. Richard has been a carnivore for 5 years, following a ketogenic diet for 11 years. He was once clinically obese, had type 2 diabetes, and suffered from daily debilitating migraines that would render him blind. He also struggled with chronic fatigue, depression, anxiety, and in his mid to late 20s, he could barely walk up the stairs without stopping or being severely out of breath. He switched to a keto diet and within 12 months, he lost 107 lbs, reversed his diabetes, and no longer suffered from any of the aforementioned issues. The subsequent years saw him become a pro athlete and a British & European champion in men's physique bodybuilding. Olivia and Coach Stephen discuss the upcoming Public Health Collaboration conference and the exciting lineup of speakers. LINKS TO PHChttps://phcuk.org/phc-conference-2024/BUY TICKETS DIRECTLYhttps://phc24.eventify.io/t/tickets/She also mentioned the discussion panels on topics such as ultra-processed food and how to educate kids on proper nutrition. There is also a panel on mental health and the connection to diet. She believes that conversations about mental health and nutrition need to be more open and honest as there is a strong link between the two. She also talked about the importance of changing the current healthcare and education systems. Olivia herself has been on the low carb, keto-carnivore path for about 2 years for similar reasons to Coach Stephen: taking care of her parents made her realize how important it was to prevent herself from getting lifelong diseases. Her skin, eyes, teeth, athletic performance have all improved. The changes were even noticeable when she was on a strict keto diet. She doesn't see any reason to go back to any other type of diet. Join us for an enlightening dialogue with Jackie Fletcher, whose life-long exploration of various diets led her to become the inspirational figure she is today. Jackie's journey wasn't about following the latest trend, but rather finding what worked best for her body, which ended up resolving as a ketogenic diet! But that's not all. Jackie's journey also took her into the cold waters of England, where she discovered the mental health benefits of open water swimming. Though not a magical weight loss solution, Jackie found solace and enjoyment in the chill waters, and she is excited to share this experience with you. From her initial struggle with cold water swimming to the transformative benefits it has brought to her life, Jackie's story is one of courage and resilience. As we navigate the world of diets and health, we also explore the carnivore diet, a dietary approach that Jackie still used to this day. She shares her unexpected experience of satiety, the impact it had on her relationship with food, and how it played a part in her overall health journey. Jackie's story is a compelling tale of perseverance and exploration, demonstrating that the key to health is not a one-size-fits-all solution, but a personalized approach that works for you. GP Dr David Unwin has been a pioneer in the UK developing and promoting a low-carb approach for treating type 2 diabetes. In 2016, he won the NHS innovator of the year award for his work. His treatment approach has been so successful that he has put around half his type 2 diabetic patients, who follow a low carb diet, into remission. And as a result, his practice, spends far less on diabetic medication than any of the surrounding GP surgeries. The potential cost savings if this approach was adopted nationally and internationally, would be huge for health services across the world. We tend to think that unless we have a form of diabetes that we don't really need to be concerned about our blood sugar levels, but nothing could be further from the truth. As we get older, all of us unless we change our diet and lifestyle, will see our blood sugar levels rise, this causes our bodies to produce more and more insulin, which can lead to insulin resistance. If we eat a diet high in carbohydrates, this is likely to exacerbate the problem. And that matters because insulin resistance isn't just linked to type 2 diabetes but a wide range of illnesses including high blood pressure, heart disease, Alzheimer's and some cancers too. In the podcast, David discusses the Public Health Collaboration, a charity that he set up with colleagues, which aims to promote metabolic health and so prevent many chronic diseases. Here's a link to it: https://phcuk.org/ And here is a link to David's most recent paper published in BMJ nutrition, also discussed in the podcast: https://nutrition.bmj.com/content/6/1/46 The host of the podcast, Liz Tucker is an award winning medical journalist and former BBC producer and director. Helen Gowers and Jon Furniss Helen is passionate about improving the options for people with type 2 diabetes after seeing the destruction it caused her dad. She wants the NHS to support people to achieve remission using a real food, low carbohydrate approach. She is a registered dietitian and director of The Lifestyle Club (TLC) a health coaching service for adults with type 2 diabetes, developed by the charity, Public Health Collaboration. TLC has helped over 700 people and is already commissioned by 44 GP surgeries around the country. She recently launched a crowdfunding campaign for a TLC research study with the University of Surrey which is starting in September. Jon is a type 1 diabetic himself and having taken control of his own diabetes and normalising his blood glucose through his own independent research he now wants to share the experience and insight he has gained and support other diabetics towards achieving similar results to his own. Jon chose to join the PHC to achieve this aim and after having set up and run his own volunteer ambassador programme to support participants drawn from his local GP surgery. He then went on to train in the first wave of TLC health coaches to support what is now many hundreds of people living with diabetes and pre-diabetes from all over the country. Jon finds the work hugely rewarding, and each story of remission he hears fills his day with joy. Jon's Top Tips Understand your basal requirements. Small incremental changes are easier to cement. Pay attention to your constant glucose monitor (CGM). If you haven't got a CGM - get one. Helen's Top Tips Use the GRIN model for goal setting. Find your tribe. Viv Hamilton Prior to switching to a low carb way of eating, Viv Hamilton had been obese for about twenty years and had had the usual experience of yoyo dieting. After a serious car accident in 2019, she was told by the surgeon that she would develop severe arthritis and need a knee replacement within about 3 years. After about 9 months of rehabilitation, the arthritis symptoms developed and began to rapidly worsen. Luckily Viv and her husband are patients at the Freshwell surgery. When Viv's husband was recommended to try going low carb, she decided they would go low carb together. She thought it would help if she lost some weight before the anticipated knee replacement operation. However, there didn't seem to be much information about going low carb as a vegetarian. Cutting out wholegrains went against the traditional advice for vegetarians who are told to combine pulses with wholegrains to obtain complete proteins from plants. Viv did her own research and found out that small seeds (flax, hemp, sesame, chia etc) are not only low carb, they have a better nutritional profile than starchy grains and they are at least as good in complementing the profile of amino acids in pulses. Switching to low carb was transformational for Viv. Within four months the arthritis symptoms had disappeared. In total she has lost over 6 stone, and is now in the healthy weight range. IBS symptoms have also gone away and she has been de-prescribed most of her blood pressure medicine. As a way of saying thank you, she volunteered to help others on their low carb journey, volunteering for Freshwell and the Colne Valley PCN and joining the charity, The Public Health Collaboration as an Ambassador. Viv's Top Tips We are all individuals - find what is convenient that fits in with you. Fits your lifestyle as well as your metabolism. Stay away from ultra processed foods. Be aware that caffeine can dis-regulate insulin and can produce sugar spike. Today's show is a refreshing evidence based conversation with Jayne Buxton, the author of The Plant-Based Con'. Jayne Buxton is the author of the Great Plant Based Con, why eating a plant only diet won't improve your health or save the planet. Mary-Frances O'Connor, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Arizona where she conducts studies to better understand the grief process both psychologically and physiologically. She is a leader in the field of prolonged grief, a clinical condition in which people do not adjust to the acute feelings of grief and show increases in yearning, avoidance, and rumination. Her work primarily focuses on trying to tease out the mechanisms that cause this ongoing and severe reaction to loss. In particular, she is curious about the neurobiological, immune, and cardiovascular factors that vary between individual responses to grief. Dr. O'Connor's book: The Grieving Brain: The Surprising Science of How We Learn from Love and Loss gives us a fascinating new window into one of the hallmark experiences of being human. O'Connor has devoted decades to researching the effects of grief on the brain, and in this book, she makes cutting-edge neuroscience accessible through her contagious enthusiasm and guides us through how we encode love and grief. With love, our neurons help us form attachments to others; but, with loss, our brain must come to terms with where our loved ones went, or how to imagine a future that encompasses their absence. Based on O'Connor's own trailblazing neuroimaging work, research in the field, and her real-life stories, The Grieving Brain does what the best popular science books do, combining storytelling, accessible science, and practical knowledge that will help us better understand what happens when we grieve and how to navigate loss with more ease and grace. In today's episode: How Mary-Frances got into the field of bereavement science Why it is so hard and takes so long to understand that when someone dies it is forever Why grief causes so many emotions What happens to the brain during grief How our understanding of grief has changed over time Why do some people adapt better than others when someone passes away What can we do when we are overwhelmed with grief? Can our grief change? Signature Question: If you could tell a younger version of yourself something about grief/grieving/bereavement – what would it be? Follow Dr. O'Connor: Website: https://maryfrancesoconnor.org/ Book: https://www.amazon.com/Grieving-Brain-Surprising-Science-Learn/dp/0062946242/ref=asc_df_0062946242/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=598249994043&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17161250467926381577&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9021321&hvtargid=pla-1676635241690&psc=1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/maryfranceso Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/doctormfoconnor/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maryfrancesoconnor/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/doctormfo ANNOUNCEMENTS: Dr. Jen Unwin is holding a 3-day/2-night all-inclusive weekend retreat of learning, sharing, and support for anyone addicted to processed foods, sugar, or carbs. Nicola grew up in the 70s and 80s, and says that she doesn't remember food being an issue during her childhood. She wasn't overweight as a child. In her 20s and 30s, once she had her own money, all she wanted to do was to buy the food that was available at the canteen at the hospital where she worked. She also had the attitude that if she needed to lose weight, she would crash diet.It was all about the number on the scale, not about being healthy, says Nicola. Then in her mid-30s when she stopped smoking, her weight really started to go up... even though she was eating low-fat.But all those low-fat products were full of sugar! And Nicola was always hungry and miserable. How did Nicola discover the low carb way of eating? Thank you for joining us for another episode of the Low Carb MD Podcast. Jackie Fletcher lives in the UK with her husband and twin boys. After starting on her low carb eating journey in May 2017 and then moving to a ketogenic way of eating in January 2018, she has discovered a passion for everything low carb and keto. In 2019 she decided to make low carb and keto part of her vision to help others on their journey to health and weight loss. Jackie has a certificate in the ketogenic diet, is a nutrition advisor and is a trainee Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner. She is also an ambassador for the charity PHCUK.org (Public Health Collaboration) dedicated to informing and implementing healthy decisions for better public health. In their conversation, Tro, Brian, and Jackie talk about how Jackie discovered the low-carb way of eating, believing in yourself and having hope, how Jackie started the Fabulously Keto Podcast, the confusion surrounding the term, ‘diet,' being applied to the low-carb/keto lifestyle, the effect of stress on weight re-gain, the calming and anxiety reducing effect of prayer and meditation, how to have a healthy perspective on your nutritional lifestyle that helps you avoid feelings of shame and guilt if you go off plan, adopting the keto lifestyle and the multifaceted world of health that opens up as a result. In 2005, Mark left his job at a bank to become a self-employed financial adviser. He feels that the stress of the job combined with his already unhealthy lifestyle, contributed to the diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes in 2010 when he was just 39. At that time, he weighed 102kg (224 pounds). He says “I felt sluggish, overweight, tired and just felt run down. I had symptoms of diabetes such as repeated thrush and a tingly foot. I didn't realise how bad I felt though until I got better.” When he was diagnosed, he was advised to follow the Eatwell guide and lost weight probably because he cut out all the unhealthy takeaways. He also threw himself into long distance running, joining the local Parkrun and doing The Great South Run, a 10-mile road race in Portsmouth, every year. The running, together with medication appeared to keep his weight and blood sugar under control until 2016, when they both started to increase again. He was told that his condition was progressing, and he would need to increase his medication. All changed, however, when he happened to hear Dr Michael Mosley being interviewed on the radio. He explained that people with diabetes have been advised to eat the wrong foods, and that it was these foods that were leading to the condition being chronic and progressive. “As I'd been threatened with more drugs, I felt I had nothing to lose. I bought The 8 Week Blood Sugar Diet and gave it a go. I cut out all bread, pasta, rice and sugar. No more breakfast cereals and no potatoes with my dinner. I started cooking too which was a first for me. I realised that preparing meals isn't as difficult as I thought and I enjoyed the reward of eating what I'd cooked rather than putting a ready-meal in the oven for 20 minutes. The changes in my weight and blood sugar levels were very quick. I didn't find it too hard. I can be tempted to eat the wrong things and if out with friends I wouldn't get too anxious over what I ate, but I wouldn't let that allow me to “fall off the wagon” for days on end. I'm lucky like that but I think you need to know yourself and whether you can have the odd thing without undoing all your good work.” He lost nearly 20kb (44 pounds) in weight and his diabetes is now in remission. He feels much better, both mentally as well as physically. “In 2018, I was invited to parliament to speak alongside Professor Roy Taylor and Dr David Unwin and others who had found evidence for diet reversing diabetes. If you had asked me previously to stand up in front of audiences or push myself forward like that, I would have avoided it and thought of any reason to get out of it. My confidence just wasn't there. I feel like a fog lifted from my head in 2016 and I now find myself doing all manner of things and I absolutely love it. I put this down to how I now feed not only my body but my brain too.” Mark also became an ambassador for the Public Health Collaboration and this has opened many doors to help others put their type 2 diabetes into remission. For the past 2 years he has been working with his local Primary Care Network to put on a low carb programme for patients which, combined with movement, combatting stress and prioritising a good night's sleep, has led to some wonderful outcomes. “So far we have run 13 groups with an average of around a dozen participants in each group. The first 20 patients alone lost an average of 9 kg (20 pounds) in weight and reduced their HbA1c by 19 mmol/mol (1.8%). It is truly heart-warming to see how happy people are, now they have a plan that works. I'm now a Health and Wellbeing Coach and employee of the NHS. I never would have believed it!” Timestamps: 00:00 Ambassador for Public Health Collaboration 06:17 Obesity: familial vs lifestyle 09:00 Diabetic retinopathy, tingling feet 15:07 Coming off medications 20:15 Feeling better 22:32 Hemoglobin A1C and weight loss 28:26 More eggs than steak 33:22 Shouting off the rooftops 36:47 Support from doctor 40:49 Improvement in productivity 42:24 Sustainability of low-carb diets 45:35 Normalizing vs pathologizing 48:31 Changing behavior Join the Community: https://carnivore.diet/join/ Book a Carnivore Coach: https://carnivore.diet/book-a-coach/ Carnivore Shirts: https://merch.carnivore.diet Subscribe to our Newsletter: https://carnivore.diet/subscribe/ . #revero #shawnbaker #Carnivorediet #MeatHeals #HealthCreation #humanfood #AnimalBased #ZeroCarb #DietCoach #FatAdapted #Carnivore #sugarfree
Dr Jen Unwin BSc, MSc, DPsy, C Psychol, FBPsS (consultant clinical health psychologist; past chair, UK Association for Solution Focused Practice; winner of the British Psychological Society Karen Ehlert Lifetime achievement award in clinical health psychology) has spent her professional life interested in the role of hope in chronic disease and how it can be used to bring about behaviour change and improve quality of life. Her insights teamed up perfectly with Dr David Unwin's interests in bringing about drug-free type 2 diabetes remission. For nine years they have been running group sessions in primary care to achieve just that, so far for over 100 patients, saving considerable amounts on de-prescribed drugs. Both doctors were featured in a BBC TV documentary ‘The truth about carbs' that was seen by 3.7 million viewers. Since retiring from the NHS, she has devoted her time to learning about, researching and helping others with sugar addiction. She has published a book called ‘Fork in the Road: A hopeful guide to food freedom', the proceeds of which are for The Public Health Collaboration.
