The University of Pittsburgh, through the University of Pittsburgh Institute for Cyber Law, Policy, and Security (Pitt Cyber), and Trinity College Dublin, through ADAPT, the SFI research centre for AI-Driven Digital Content Technology, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to foster collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI) research and education. The partnership will address critical issues such as bias, discrimination, and misinformation, as well as exploring the role of AI regulation, cyber hygiene, digital literacy, and the safeguarding of fundamental rights. The five-year MOU aims to advance research on areas such as human-centric AI, the safe and ethical development of AI-enabled products and services, and addressing risks associated with AI and other advanced technologies. The agreement will focus on regulatory initiatives on both sides of the Atlantic and will provide a platform for sharing best practices. Both institutions will develop shared capabilities by exchanging information, fostering cooperation, and facilitating exchanges of expert personnel, including faculty and students. The general public will also benefit from free lectures as part of the annual schedule of activities. Speaking about the partnership, ADAPT Director, Professor John D. Kelleher, said: "The importance of transatlantic cooperation for building a level AI playing field cannot be understated. This MOU highlights our commitment to promoting a global culture of ethical AI development, privacy and data protection. I am excited about the potential for transatlantic dialogue and collaboration that can contribute to the development of common AI regulations that ensure transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights." Echoing the sentiment, Professor David J. Hickton, founding Director of the University of Pittsburgh Institute for Cyber Law, Policy, and Security, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, saying: "This MOU represents an important step forward in our joint efforts to address the most pressing issues surrounding AI and digital technology. By working together, Trinity and the University of Pittsburgh can create a culture of shared learning that promotes innovation, protects privacy, and contributes to the responsible and ethical development of AI. The collaboration and cooperation between Europe and the United States in the development and governance of AI are essential for ensuring safe, ethical, and innovative AI technologies. A unified approach to AI governance can facilitate the development of global standards, ensuring that AI technologies are safe, transparent, and beneficial to all. The collaboration is effective immediately, with plans underway for public initiatives in the autumn. All events will be listed on the ADAPT Centre and Pitt Cyber's websites.

Book bans have been cropping up all over the country, usually brought by conservative parent or community groups appealing to school boards saying they don't want kids to have access to something for various reasons. Often it's LGBTQ+ identifying characters, conversations about race, uncomfortable hardships, truths, or lived experiences that some people think students aren't ready for. But while some parts of the state have been inundated with book challenges, Western Pennsylvania hasn't.  We're with City Paper's Colin Williams to talk about his upcoming reporting — including proposed bans in Norwin, Hempfield, Pine-Richland, and Franklin Regional school districts, and how our upcoming election Nov. 7 could set the stage for fights to come. Comcast today announced it will award $1 million in grants to 100 small businesses owned by women and people of color, including Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, and Asian American owners, among others, in Allegheny County. Eligible businesses can access and submit applications at www.comcastrise.com from June 1-14. Pittsburgh is one of five locations, including Atlanta, Detroit, Philadelphia, and Twin Cities, that was selected to award a $10,000 grant to 100 local businesses from the Comcast RISE Investment Fund, for a total of $5 million across 500 businesses. This will bring to $16 million the amount awarded since the inception of the Investment Fund. The first round of the Comcast RISE Investment Fund, announced in April of 2021, provided $5 million in grants to 500 small businesses owned by people of color in five cities: Philadelphia/Chester, Houston, Atlanta, Chicago and Detroit. Round two was announced in September of 2021, providing $6 million in grants to 600 small businesses in six locations: Miami, Houston, Oakland, Seattle, the Twin Cities, and Washington, D.C. To help drive awareness about round three of the program and provide additional support, training, and mentorship, Comcast has also awarded support to Neighborhood Allies, the Mon Valley Initiative and the University of Pittsburgh Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence. Recipients will be announced later this summer. The monetary grants made through the Investment Fund complement the ongoing Comcast RISE core program, which has provided more than $50 million in technology and marketing resources to more than 8,000 entrepreneurs nationwide since RISE began in November of 2020. These resources, which have gone to 19 businesses in Western PA, include a TV campaign; production of a TV commercial or consulting services from Effectv, the advertising sales division of Comcast Cable; or computer equipment, internet, voice or cybersecurity from Comcast Business. Together, the Investment Fund and core program will support 13,000 small businesses owned by women and people of color, including Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, and Asian American owners, among others, by the end of 2022.   Comcast RISE, which stands for “Representation, Investment, Strength and Empowerment,” was formed to give small businesses owned by people of color, from bakeries and barber shops to childcare centers and cleaning services, the grants needed to not just survive, but thrive. In November 2021, Comcast RISE announced a major expansion to all women-owned businesses nationwide

To be polite, the officers smiled at her," Wu said.在疫情防控人员抵达艾米丽下榻的民宿前,有三位民警正在进行其他工作,正好路过民宿,“据当事民警说,当时艾米丽心情看起来不错,还顺手拿着手机拍他们,出于礼貌,对着镜头笑了笑。However, these police officers were later described by O'Dell in her tweets as "creepy" and "Red Rum girls" and asked the Marines to save her from them.而在艾米丽的社交媒体上,这些对她微笑的民警,却被描述成“很恐怖”,是“女杀人狂”(注:Red Rum在美国俚语中有谋杀的意思,因为这两个词倒过来就是英文中的谋杀一词“Murder”)。她甚至还发帖要求美国海军陆战队把她从这两名“女杀人狂”那里救出来。 She also tweeted that she was "getting rounded up by 20 cops." Wu refuted such remarks and said that the three officers O'Dell met were just passing by and after the conflict between her and local working staff of prevention work occurred, three other police officers for COVID-19 prevention work arrived. Because she was a foreigner, two police officers from the entry and exit administrationbureau were invited to assist. A total of only eight police officers were on spot, among which three were passing by. 她还在推特上说,她“被20 名警察围起来”。吴警官说这一内容完全不实,并说,艾米丽起初遇到的三名与其聊天的民警纯粹是路过,后来发生冲突后,另有疫情防控保障的三名民警到场,但由于艾米丽是外籍人员,所以又请负责出入境管理的两名民警到场协助,“总共出现在现场的民警不超过8人,其中3人还只是路过。”"According to witnesses, working staff for prevention work asked O'Dell to show the health code and she became emotional and even cried and screamed on the site. No police officer nor the working staff had taken anycoercivemeasures on her. No physical contact with her. All the residents, including the owner of the homestay hotel can prove that," Wu said. “据目击群众描述,疫情防控人员抵达要求她出示健康码的时候,她情绪变得非常激动,甚至在现场哭闹。但在防疫和执法过程中,警方和疫情防控人员没有采取任何强制措施,没有肢体接触。民宿老板等群众都可以证实。”O'Dell's remarks have drawnbacklash and some Chinese netizens said she may be suffering from mental problems as her remarks sounded "frantic". Some foreign netizens also noted that the US professor might have studied "creative writing" and "script writing" and these may be the reasons for her exaggerated descriptions on Twitter. 艾米丽社交媒体的言论引发轩然大波。有中国网民认为,艾米丽可能是精神出问题了,因为她的这些言论实在看起来“太癫狂了”。一些外国网民还提醒,这个美国教授之前学习过“创作性写作”和“剧本写作”,并怀疑这可能是她在推特上的描述如此夸张耸动的原因。 According to China's Exit and Entry Administration Law, "where foreigners engage in activities not corresponding to the purposes of stay or residence, or otherwise violate the laws or regulations of China, which makes them no longer eligible to stay or reside in China, they may be ordered to exit China within a time limit."依据中华人民共和国出境入境管理法第81条:“外国人从事与停留居留事由不相符的活动,或者有其他违反中国法律、法规规定,不适宜在中国境内继续停留居留情形的,可以处限期出境。”Where a foreigner's violation of this Law is serious but does not constitute a crime, the Ministry of Public Security may deport them. The penalty decision made by the Ministry of Public Security shall be final. Deported foreigners shall not be allowed to enter China within 10 years calculating from the date ofdeportation, according to the law. 外国人违反本法情节严重但不构成犯罪的,公安部可以予以驱逐出境。公安部作出的处罚决定为终审决定。被驱逐外国人自被驱逐之日起10年内不得进入中国境内。On Sept 2, O'Dell took a plane from Shanghai to San Francisco.9月2日,艾米丽从上海搭乘飞往旧金山的班机离境。1. untenable美 [ʌn'tenəb(ə)l] 英 [ʌn'tenəb(ə)l]adj.

The nation’s leading cybersecurity expert, David Hickton, founding director of the University of Pittsburgh Institute for Cyber Law, Policy and Security joins host Grant Oliphant for this episode of “We Can Be.”   David has been a steady force in some of the most front-and-center issues of our time – including cyber security, child and inmate safety, the battle against opioid abuse, and equity in the algorithms fueling our digital lives.   Nominated by President Barack Obama to be the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, he made national headlines in 2014 for indicting members of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army for hacking into and stealing trade secrets from major corporations. Now, as the leader of the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, he will help ensure the trillions of dollars the U.S. government has earmarked for COVID-19 relief are spent wisely and effectively.   The upcoming election has kept David’s cybersecurity work in the forefront of the national conversation. “If we can do our income taxes digitally, put our medical records online, or go to the moon on a cyber platform,” he says, “then surely we can find a way to safely vote on a cyber platform.”   David shares the grown-up book he read at age seven that spurred his lifelong devotion to fighting for the rights of the less-powerful; combating the often-inherent race bias involved in algorithms; facing being called a traitor by fellow Catholics for speaking up on behalf of children abused by church personnel; and the guiding tenet he has that drives his work: “When I get up in the morning, I still see myself as a civil rights advocate.”   “We Can Be” is hosted by Heinz Endowments President Grant Oliphant, and produced by the Endowments, Josh Franzos and Tim Murray. This week, I sit down with Kevin Drobish. Kevin is the Distance Education Pathology Instructor at Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science (PIMS). Kevin grew up in Pittsburgh as a skate rat before moving away and working as a musician for some years. After a bad experience with a family member being poorly taken care after their passing, he decided to he wanted to start down the path to help the deceased. Kevin and I talk about skating, homemade salsa, the situation that led him to PIMS, working with the dead, different cases he's worked on, studying under for Cyril Wecht, and how he fell in love with what he does. Kevin has performed over 1300 autopsies and now he is an instructor a PIMS. You can tell how much he loves what he does. This was absolutely my favorite episode to date. I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania, and my dad had a junkyard full of classics, and one-of-a-kinds. Unfortunately, the weather and salt in Pa. did a lot of damage to these gems. Many of them rusted away to nothing. I hated seeing that happen. As I got older, I went into the military and served 3 years in the Army. I spent those years in Georgia, and I was amazed at the condition of the cars there. I realized that not all were destined to die. After I left the military, I pursued a career in aviation. I went to school in Pittsburgh at the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics. From there, I was hired by Delta Air Lines to be a sheet metal mechanic. I have been with Delta for over 23 years, and I live just South of Atlanta. I have enjoyed building and repairing many cars over the years. I even did some dirt track racing. Along the way, I worked with a friend doing restoration work. I would do all the sheet metal work, and he would paint them. Eventually this led to us opening small body shop. We managed to grow the shop, and move to a bigger building. We had 8 bays, and 5 employees. It was fun for about 7 years, but we parted ways, and I went back to doing cars at home. My passion still exists for these old beauties. I have several cars of my own, and I'm always finding more to do. I recently did all the repair work up to and including paint on a 1965 Mustang. That was a big project, and I must say it turned out pretty nice. With all the things I've learned over the years, I decided to share what I know by making YouTube videos. This has been an interesting experiment. Things that I thought were mundane turned out to be of great interest to the masses. I plan to continue making videos, and I invite you along for the ride.” Until next time, Keep it safe, keep it shiny and on the road. Get rolling.
