In this electrifying episode of Jack Dappa Blues, we sit down with the powerhouse that is Honeychild Coleman—a pioneering force in the world of punk, blues, and avant-garde music. In this episode we welcome music writer/photographer turned award-winning TV director Mick Gold and ask him to return to the mid-'70s to discuss pub rock, Bruce Springsteen and the wonderful Let It Rock magazine. Mick explains how he fell in with Let It Rock's "hard-up left-wing intellectuals" after penning a 5,000-word Beatles thesis at Sussex University. We then hear about the magazine and its eclectic agenda, along with our guest's parallel career as a photographer and his 1976 photo-essay book Rock on the Road. This in turn leads to a conversation about the "pub rock" scene that mushroomed in London during Let It Rock's 1972-75 lifespan. Along with Mick's 1975 Dr. Feelgood interview, Mark, Martin and Barney share their memories of gigs by Kilburn & the High Roads and Chili Willi & the Red Hot Peppers. The gradual transition from Pub to Punk is recalled and analysed with passing reference to Mick's 1976 Street Life interview with Patti Smith. The mid-'70s theme takes us into clips from a 2016 audio interview in which Bruce Springsteen talks to Vanity Fair's David Kamp about 1975's breakthrough classic 'Born to Run' — and then to a further discussion of the Boss' inclusion in Jann Wenner's controversial new book The Masters. After Mark quotes from interviews with Dizzy Gillespie, James Brown, Todd Rundgren, Chic and Wham!, Jasper talks us out with his notes on pieces about Nona Hendryx and Rammellzee. Pieces discussed: The Band, Rock on the Road introduction, Bob Dylan at 60, Brinsley Schwarz, Dr. Feelgood, Pub Rock Proms, Bruce Springsteen on 'Born to Run', Dizzy Gillespie, Ike & Tina Turner, James Brown, Todd Rundgren, Chic, Wham!, Bruce Springsteen, Nona Hendryx and Rammellzee.

The season one finale takes us right back to the days I spoke about in Episode #1. It's 1983, and my final days living in Germany are upon me, before permanently moving back to the United States. This is the story of one of the last movies I was able to see before leaving, Star Wars Return of the Jedi, and the one I learned I was going to have to miss because of that same move, Wild Style. How much influence that factor had on the Wild Style Soundtrack becoming one of my all-time favorite albums I don't know, but the importance and brilliance of that album still drives me to listen to it regularly to this day. Plus, as a young inspiring MC, the performances of Grandmaster Caz, Prince Whipper Whip, Shock Dell, Rammellzee, and especially Lil Rodney Cee, were monumental. Plus, as an avid fan of the art of DJing, the sounds of Grandmixer D.st, Grand Wizard Theodore, and DJ Charlie Chase, the focus on the turntable on this soundtrack had an additional impact.

Roy Christopher traces the story of how hip-hop invented the twenty-first century and tells us how the hallmarks of hip-hop — allusion, self-reference, the use of new technologies, sampling, the cutting and splicing of language and sound — would come to define the culture of the new millennium.Christopher takes in the ground-breaking work of DJs and MCs such as Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and Rammellzee, alongside writers like Philip K. Dick and William Gibson, and links graffiti and DIY culture to present a fascinating continuum of music of the past, present, and future— all  tied to hip hop.

The thought-provoking and intriguing new documentary IN BRIGHT AXIOM introduces us into the world of the House of Latitude. A place where absolute discretion is demanded in exchange for entry into a mysterious social experiment in the form of an elaborate immersive experience. Drawing a community of curiosity seekers, this secret society becomes a way of life for some, putting increasing pressure on the organizers to maintain this sophisticated and fantastical parallel world. From the minds who inspired AMC's upcoming series Dispatches From Elsewhere, IN BRIGHT AXIOM weaves an intriguing cautionary tale about the unforeseen consequences of embracing the unknown. Followers of Meow Wolf, Sleep No More, Ingress and other immersive & augmented reality entertainment should take note. IN BRIGHT AXIOM also features never-before-seen discourse from the mesmerizing hip-hop polymath, RAMMELLZEE and original music by Justin Robbins, with additional songs from Isan, Tickles, and ü-Ziq. Director Spencer McCall has spent the last ten years orchestrating socio-reengineering and public hoax-prank performance art pieces. An avid fan of the Yes Men, McCall began by participating in Improv Everywhere inspired events, “plant” based roles in The Go Game, and location-based performances with Atmos-theater. In 2009, he became a co-creator of the Jejune Institute; a citywide alternate reality game in San Francisco that lasted three years and “inducted” over 10,000 unknowing participants. McCall took his experience working with Jejune and turned it into an award-winning documentary The Institute. The Institute is currently being remade into a series on a major television network. McCall also contributed to follow-up experience The Latitude Society; a faux secret society with an underground experiential labyrinth beneath San Francisco. Director Spencer McCall and House of Latitude founder and In Bright Axiom subject, Jeff Hull, join us for a fascinating conversation on the ebb and flow, as well as, the inherent contradiction that facilitated the unraveling of this remarkable enterprise. On our latest episode host Peter Agoston sat with the Hungarian singer, actress, violinist Eszter Balint. In the acting word many know her work from such acclaimed works as 'Stranger Than Paradise' (where we learn how she is responsible for the incredible Rammellzee cameo). and 'Tree's Lounge', she also was a major stand-out on Season 4 of 'Louie', as Amia. She's also an accomplished recording artist, having collaborated with the likes of Swans and Marc Ribot. We talk about that + growing up at The Squat Theater, Louie, Bowie, Sun Ra, Warhol, Susan Sontag, and muuch more. But most importantly we talk about being Hungarian. Patti Astor is punk as f… She was the star of hip hop first great b-movie, Wild Style. As the owner of the FUN Gallery, she helped to promote the careers of important graffiti artists like Jean Michel Basquiat, Dondi, Rammellzee, Lee, Futura. She never really made a dime. And that’s kind of how she wanted it. In a world filled with opportunists and con artists, we have Patti Astor: "I made a commitment to those guys when they came into FUN Gallery that this is going to be the artist's gallery and I'm going to make it my promise to you that you are always going to be represented the way that you need to be seen. Just because they're all gone doesn't mean that commitment is over.” At age 66, still as idealistic and opinionated as ever, Patti graciously came by our studios to drop knowledge as only the Queen of the Downtown Screen can. All you young badasses can learn a thing or two from her incredible stories. A couple of her lessons: - Never sell out. She’s going to tell you exactly how she does it, and it’s painful. - Live for the danger. - How to hustle like Madonna If you liked this episode, check out our interview with Paul Stewart: https://soundcloud.com/rebel_radio/1st-draft-paul-stewart-project *EDM.com Track of the Week: https://soundcloud.com/hip-hop/just-matthew-leak

We first got to know each other when he contributed to my Height With Friends Versus The Continental MC’s album. We talk about his childhood in Madison, WI and the hip-hop and hardcore punk that influenced him there. I ask him about his collaborations with Atari Teenage Riot, Saul Williams, Rammellzee and Kanye West and what he took away from those experiences. We also discuss releasing his two Krak Attack albums through Stones Throw Records, working as a fetish clip director and his new Sewer Rats BK project.
