You may have seen it on the news, on social media, or even on the tube: hundreds of people riding the underground with no trousers on, in the middle of winter. On Sunday the 7th of December London commuters braved the cold to strip off to their underwear for this unusual event. The No Trousers Tube Ride, as it is officially called, is an annual event that takes place on the first Sunday of January. It started in London in 2009, inspired by the No Pants Subway Ride, which was created by Improv Everywhere, a New York-based comedy collective, in 2002. What does it mean? Is it a protest, a prank, or a party? What is the reaction to the event? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Is improvisation at the heart of Western culture — music, art, literature, politics, even artificial intelligence? Author Randy Fertel thinks so. And he warns that as much as it's a positive force, there's also peril in it.

Welcome to STIMY Ep 134!Today, you have the pleasure of hanging out with me.
Le No Pants Day. . . . Meet Charlie Todd - a professional prankster & also the founder of Improv Everywhere (a New York City-based prank collective with a twist!).Rather than pranks that embarrass people, Improv Everywhere organises large-scale pranks that create chaos & lots of joy in public. The kind of thing that'd make you go, “You'll never believe what just happened!”E.g. ✨ A bunch of strangers ride the subway - without pants! ✨ 200 people freezing in place for 5 minutes in NYC's Grand Central Terminal - with 37 million views on YouTube! ✨ A man going to work in his socially distanced office - located in the middle of the East River in NYC! ✨ Thousands of people putting on headphones and following the narrator's every word: Walking backwards, freezing, slow dancing, wrapping themselves in toilet paper etc. ✨ Turning the NYC subway into a spa, complete with complimentary water, sauna station, hot stone massage & a steam room misting station...You get the picture

“The show must go on!” is a phrase associated with live entertainment for a reason. Arts workers have always had to think on their feet, respond to last-minute disasters and improvise their way through unexpected circumstances. But the past few years have presented the industry with some unique disruptions. For the first episode of Season 2, we bring you stories about improvisation from around the world including stories about how crises can help you grow, the strength in flexibility, and how too much uncertainty can grind you down. Introduction: “In Tune” with Aruna Kharod, an ethnomusicologist and South Asian performing artist based in Austin, Texas. Act One: “Flipping The Script” with Audrey Rose Dégez, a playwright and producer for CP4P International Productions who splits her time between Pittsburgh and Paris.Act Two: “ On The Road Again” with Gracie Meier, a multimedia artist and artistic director for The Exodus Ensemble in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Act Three: “Stooping to New Heights” with Kendra J. Ross, a dancer, choreographer, community organizer and founding director of STooPS in Brooklyn, New York. If your passion is the saxophone but you spend your days staring at spreadsheets on a screen, the obvious solution is to spend your free time playing in a band. The not-so-obvious benefits to that are (1) something to daydream about as you attend to those spreadsheets, (2) less panic at whether either venture will work out because your proverbial eggs are spread across a couple of baskets, and (3) the great feeling that comes from knowing you're good at more than one thing. You have lots of skills, and in this edition of Doing What Works we encourage you to find more outlets for those you most love to use. Here are your show notes…What Color Is Your Parachute? author Dick Bolles says our gifts don't like to be caged up inside of us. They like to be out in the world and be used. Here's the Improv Everywhere sketch where strangers are applauded for making a soccer goal.
When you look ahead to the end of your life, what do you see? I see a big box of treasures to hand over to Katie. One of them is a montage of the funniest parts of my favorite movies. To the extent anyone gets together to say goodbye, I want that to be the entertainment. Katie would have a bedazzling station. You wouldn't be required to partake, but you would make her life (so to speak) if you do. Want more ideas for putting the fun in funeral? You'll find them in this edition of Doing What Works. “You don't have to have any talent. You just have to come out. I design things that would work for someone who was a lawyer or a school teacher.” - Charlie ToddIn August 2001, Charlie Todd moved to New York City with an interest in acting and comedy. He didn’t have immediate access to a stage, so he started creating in public spaces by staging undercover performances. Charlie documented his first undercover performances on a blog he called Improv Everywhere. Over the past two decades, Charlie has staged hundreds of “missions” involving tens of thousands of undercover performers and shared them on YouTube, garnering millions of views. Highlights include making time stop at Grand Central Terminal, a mass no-pants subway ride, and letting random strangers conduct a world class orchestra in the middle of Manhattan. Do yourself a favor, check out their YouTube. These pranks are not traditional improv. They require significant logistical work on Charlie’s end. He creates the "sandbox" for participants—first friends from his early comedy career in NYC and now thousands of people who have signed up for the Improv Everywhere mailing list—to play in, exercising their own creativity. We talked with Charlie about crowdsourcing the creativity of strangers to create in his words “a happy mob.” Highlights, inspiration, & key learnings:Commanding attention. In comedy, it’s easy to get a laugh out of negative material, pointing the finger at a victim. Charlie does the extraordinary to live out the golden rule, “anything you perform should be something you want people to do to you.”The “why” for participants. In it for the fun of it.Crowd control. Managing an email list of thousands and knowing how many people to tap at one time.Power of YouTube. How YouTube created global reach for Improv Everywhere connecting them with new performers and opportunities. The “why” of the leader. How Charlie’s motivations have shifted over the past 19 years.Space. Public space as the key element to the Improv Everywhere experience.

Charlie Todd (Improv Everywhere, Pixar IRL) tried for years to get Improv Everywhere on TV with lots of ups and downs along the way. We talk about how he wound up in handcuffs after an Improv Everywhere prank gone awry, seeing a network steal and produce one of his show ideas a year after he pitched it, being told by an agent how his show was a used car that he could not sell, and how this pandemic has been a gut check moment for a company that thrives on live human interaction. The thought-provoking and intriguing new documentary IN BRIGHT AXIOM introduces us into the world of the House of Latitude. A place where absolute discretion is demanded in exchange for entry into a mysterious social experiment in the form of an elaborate immersive experience. Drawing a community of curiosity seekers, this secret society becomes a way of life for some, putting increasing pressure on the organizers to maintain this sophisticated and fantastical parallel world. From the minds who inspired AMC's upcoming series Dispatches From Elsewhere, IN BRIGHT AXIOM weaves an intriguing cautionary tale about the unforeseen consequences of embracing the unknown. Followers of Meow Wolf, Sleep No More, Ingress and other immersive & augmented reality entertainment should take note. IN BRIGHT AXIOM also features never-before-seen discourse from the mesmerizing hip-hop polymath, RAMMELLZEE and original music by Justin Robbins, with additional songs from Isan, Tickles, and ü-Ziq. Director Spencer McCall has spent the last ten years orchestrating socio-reengineering and public hoax-prank performance art pieces. An avid fan of the Yes Men, McCall began by participating in Improv Everywhere inspired events, “plant” based roles in The Go Game, and location-based performances with Atmos-theater. In 2009, he became a co-creator of the Jejune Institute; a citywide alternate reality game in San Francisco that lasted three years and “inducted” over 10,000 unknowing participants. McCall took his experience working with Jejune and turned it into an award-winning documentary The Institute. The Institute is currently being remade into a series on a major television network. McCall also contributed to follow-up experience The Latitude Society; a faux secret society with an underground experiential labyrinth beneath San Francisco. Director Spencer McCall and House of Latitude founder and In Bright Axiom subject, Jeff Hull, join us for a fascinating conversation on the ebb and flow, as well as, the inherent contradiction that facilitated the unraveling of this remarkable enterprise. More Opioid Lawsuits Moving Toward Settlement (0:33)Guest: Jennifer Oliva, Associate Professor of Law, Seton Hall University School of LawIt's been a big couple of days for lawsuits related to the opioid crisis. Just as the first federal trialabout opioids was set to get underway on Monday against four companies, a settlement was reached to end the lawsuit. But that deals involves just two counties in Ohio which will get $260 million dollars in the settlement. Then a few hours later, a bipartisan group of state attorneys general announced they'd reached a tentative $48 billion opioid settlement that would apply nationwide. That deal still needs sign off from a lot of other states and cities, though –and coming to any kind of nationwide agreement on how much opioid makers and distributors should pay has been tricky to this point. The Importance of Play (21:54)Guest: Charlie Todd, Founder of Improv EverywhereImagine you're on lunch break in a public place when all of a sudden you hear this. Soon several people around you break out into song and dance, including the security guard. Would you think it was funny? Would you just want to eat in peace? A group called Improv Everywhere did this flash mob musical you're hearing in the Trump Tower. They've been doing all kinds of pranks in public places for a decade -you've probably seen one of their viral videos. Charlie Todd is the founder, and he believes that what they do isn't just fun, but also important and meaningful. Removing Landmines and Empowering Communities at the HALO Trust (34:01)Guest: Chris Whatley, Executive Director, HALO USAImagine if a field near your house was littered with hidden landmines and unexploded ordnance from a war that's over, but nobody cleaned up after. So every day, you worry that your kidsmight stray off the safe path, stumble on a landmine and end up injured, or worse. That's a reality parents live with in dozens of countries around the world, including Angola, which Britain's Prince Harry recently visited. Landmines are an unhealed scar of war. By clearing the landmines, we can help this community find peace and with peace some opportunity.” Prince Harry was following in the footsteps of his mother, Princess Diana, who helped spark global action on landmine removal with her advocacy. The HALO Trust is a leading nonprofit working on this issue across Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America, South Asia and the Middle East. Anywhere there's been a protracted war, leftover landmines are a problem. Religious Freedom and LGBT Rights Back at the US Supreme Court (51:10)Guest: Luke Goodrich, Vice President and Senior Counsel, Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, Author of “Free to Believe: The Battle Over Religious Liberty in America”The US Supreme Court is back in session and one of its most consequential cases goes straight to the heart of the divide between religious freedom and LGBT rights. The justices are being asked to decide if the federal law that prohibits workplace discrimination because of race, religion or sex, also protects gay and transgender workers. Religious organizations that represent tens of millions of Americans –including the National Association of Evangelicals, American Islamic Congress and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints –have filed a brief asking the Supreme Court not to expand the definition of “sex” in Civil Rights law. Combining Walking, Therapy, and Nature (1:09:54)Guest: Jennifer Udler, Clinical Social Worker and founder of “Positive Strides”When I meet with my therapist, I sit on a couch and she sits opposite me in an office. That's pretty standard. But social worker Jennifer Udler never meets with her clients in an office. Their therapy sessions are always outdoors, while walking. Museum Learning (1:26:31)Guest: Rachel Wadham, Host, Worlds Awaiting on BYUradio, Education and Juvenile Collections Librarian, BYU
Jennifer Oliva, Seton Hall University School of Law, on opioid lawsuits. Charlie Todd, founder of Improv Everywhere, on play. Chris Whatley, executive director of the HALO Trust on landmines. Author Luke Goodrich, “Free to Believe: The Battle Over Religious Liberty in America,” on religious freedom. Jennifer Udler, founder of “Positive Strides,” on walking therapy. Improv theater is fun – it evokes laughter and creativity. But it also takes courage – to be part of it, and even to watch it – because it challenges us to embrace the unexpected. What can we as individuals and as a church learn from improv and theater groups like Improv Everywhere?

In which I chronicle my first 3 days of an indefinite and entirely impulsive hiatus from Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter (not that I was ever using Twitter in the first place) and something else I think... Pretty sure I’m forgetting something. Hang in here; it gets worse before it gets better. The book I mentioned is Silence (In the Age of Noise) by Erling Kagge and it’s a rather quick read but super powerful. Highly recommend. The phrase ‘dopamine loop’ is technically ‘the dopamine seeking-reward loop’ but googling dopamine loop will bring up pertinent info. I also mention Improv Everywhere improveverywhere.com and Westobou westoboufestival.com. You should take part in an Improv Everywhere scene if you have the opportunity and check out the Westobou Festival if you’re able to travel to Augusta. I am so excited to share with you this week's episode of Couragemakers. I think it's fair to say that sometimes the world feels like a bit of a shitshow, especially now and I think this episode is a great beacon of hope. For this week's episode, I had the absolute joy of speaking to Mary England, self-described merriment maker and founder of Uncustomary. Mary's passion is to make other people happy and teach them how to love and accept themselves. After struggling with mental illness for twenty years and working in and studying the field of psychology for five, she decided to start the business Uncustomary to share her personal and professional experience with mental health in a way that translates into self-love and positivity. You can find her twirling in front of murals and leaving a literal trail of glitter in Baltimore, Maryland. In this episode, Mary shares her journey of becoming a self love advocate and how guerilla street art was a massive part of this journey. We dive into the difference between self confidence and self love and how adding the weird to someone's day can make all the difference. Mary shares how she uses her art to challenge social norms and how it has taught her that people are innately good and innately curious. She also shares fantastic advice for anyone wanting to make their life more colourful, glittery and sparkly which I know you're going to love. We really dive into how we can often feel like frauds when we're working with other people to help them overcome and deal with issues we have and often do struggle with, but how ultimately we couldn't be the better person for the job. I've heard a lot of noise online lately about how we can use the platforms we have to make the world a better place, and the challenges you face when you bring your own beliefs and politics into your business or projects. This is the perfect episode if you've been thinking about it too, and if you're wondering how you can bring about change and bring hope to the world when things feel very dark. This is also a great episode if you work to make the world a brighter place and sometimes struggles to keep your own light lit, if you're looking to become more active in your community and find ridiculously fun ways to do that and if you just need a great dollop of hope in your life right now. I love Mary's work, her message and what she's putting in the world. The world is honestly a brighter, more honest and creative place for her being in it. I loved our conversation and keeping up to date with all the wonderful things she's putting in the world. Enjoy the show! About Mary Mary England is a self described merriment maker. Charlie Todd is the creator and man behind Improv Everywhere, a wildly successful YouTube channel and prank collective which causes public scenes of chaos, fun and weirdness throughout New York city and beyond. Charlie created the show in 2001, and it has since completed over 100 large scale missions, and has started viral movements around the world - like not wearing pants on subways. Charlie is also a regular at UCB in NYC, and Executive Produced 'The Middle of the Night Show' on MTV.
We talk to Charlie Todd, the founder of Improv Everywhere and longtime UCB improviser, about his obsession with craft beers. We get into how Charlie discovered his love for them, how an iPhone app game-ified his obsessed and cranked it into new levels of documentating his tastes, about how many beers have silly puns on the name "hops." Also, Will talks about the international seed warehouse which is designed to protect over 400,000 varieties of seed from an apocolyptic event and Anthony discusses the frozen-in-time world of current AM radio.
On today's show, I talk to improvisor Charlie Todd. Originally from Columbia, South Carolina, Charlie moved to New York after college and since 2001 has been performing at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. At UCB, Charlie created the comedy wrestling league UCBW and was also a part of the long-running house team Reuben Williams, which later morphed into The Curfew. You may know Charlie Todd as the man behind the internet sensation Improv Everywhere. You also may know that he created the "Frozen Grand Central" prank. Episode #10- Theme Music Sweeping strings, driving drums, blasting horns; theme music is the non visual character that seems to drive emotion. From earworms to anthems, massive orchestras to 8-bit, there's a world of sound and Rock, Paper and Scissors want to take it on. First they start with Williams, Elfman, Carpenter, Hisaishi, Marricone and other big movie hitters. They switch to an almost endless list of TV themes that range from moody and mysterious to goofy and ridiculous. Flipping from TV to games, Yuzo Koshiro, Koji Kondo, Nuo Bouematsu, Yasunori Mitsuda, and a slew of others from Capcom dominate the conversation. Game time- Elfman vs/ Williams Paper pits Scissors and Rock against each other in this thematic face off. Dumpster Dives- Trolling through the dumpster could leave you singing the blues. However, our podcasters seem to always resurface singing the praises of their loot. Scissors ascends with Improv Everywhere, a website that showcases the group's hilarious exploits. Paper crests with a humorous webcomic slung over a shoulder, Oglaf. And Rock summits with Tales from the Crypt, a much missed television series.

Time out, young and old listeners! Today in the studio we had a crash course on dumb college kids, dead culture of New York, pulling pranks and loving your daddy. First up we had Greg Proops, a comedian concerned with his college audiences, who could never quite leave Harry Potter after age twelve. He also talked about the disaster that is technology and thats when it was discovered that Chris is only allowed to attend parties through the internet. Ben Stein, Eugene Levy- No - Michael Musto stopped by the studio and discussed his many mistaken identities, favorite gays, and Broadway shows. He shared stories from the good old days of a grimier New York City when the Studio 54 made sure the likes of Danny and Chris were not allowed into clubs. The crew wanted to help fulfill gay intern Thomas's fantasy by setting him and Musto up on a date, but sadly Musto wasn't ready to take the chance. Everyone was on the edge of their seats when professional pranker and founder of Improv Everywhere, Charlie Todd stopped by. He shared prank stories, from pretending to be Ben Folds to making a small band believe they actually had fans and many more. All these stories made Myka theorize that Improv Everywhere has caused mass suicide. Realizing that Todd had taught at UCB, Danny once again tried desperately to continue on from level 3 instead of level 2. After being denied he thought about suicide and then decided to prank his way into the class! Our last guest, comedian storyteller, Kambri Crews, came by to tell us about her life post Comix. She discussed her love for her very gay husband Christian (which made Chris break out into song and dance). While Crews talked about the Big Brother program, she inspired the Hosts of Comical Radio to volunteer, do their part for the community and start hiring twelve year old interns from the program. Crews also shared what it is like to have a relationship with a father in prison. Its a lovely one!

What was Old is New Again. A Meeting of Art and Scholarship | Conference Fri, 21.11.2008 – Sun, 23.11.2008 What lies beyond metaphysics? A great deal for Alfred Jarry (1873-1909), a playwright and culture jammer who coined the term Pataphysics. It is a philosophy that takes in everything written and everything sung and everything done, and like metaphysics has the virtue of meaning whatever you want it to mean. Pataphysics offers a voyage of discovery and adventure into realms where philosophers seldom venture, including art, activism, and onto the street. Dada, Futurism, Surrealism acknowledged the influence of Pataphysics, and nowadays the tradition is carried on by US-based ensembles Act-up/New York, Billboard Liberation Front, Yes Men, Cacophony Society, Negativeland, Improv Everywhere, Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping. The biting satire of their parodies and absurd theater make effective social commentary. Every religion, political ideology, philosophy, and scientific theory embodies a set of structured beliefs. These belief systems maintain a symbiotic liaison with the arts. Throughout history, communal beliefs have relied on music, theater, painting, and dance in order to propagate accepted doctrines, and the arts in turn have shaped the articles of faith. The conference brings together artists and scholars in an unusual forum. The arts addressed deal primarily with media, the major art form that has only come to the fore in recent decades. The scholarship concerns antique matters, such as Sumerian music, early Egyptian medicine, and the omens, codes of law, and creation myths of Mesopotamia. The divergent perspectives of the participants augur well for innovative ideas emerging from this close encounter between scholarship, the arts, and the belief systems of early and modern times.
Spent the day engaging in an Improv Everywhere-syle social prank with B. Love Improv, orchestrated by a member of Scene Diego. I had my recording rig hidden, recording audio during the event, and interviewing several of the participants. However, since I somehow hit pause early on in the event, none of it got recorded. What do you do in such in an instance? Why, call the Doctor, of course. Special thanks to Dr. John Cmar, for being on the other end of the phone line.
