How can we build championship teams? What is the character code and how is that incorporated within sport? Connect with Chief Wellbeing Officer and Head Sports Life Coach Carlette Patterson and Clemson University Women's Basketball Director of Quality Control Joi Williams to hear about the power of Joi's story and her passion for coaching. Creating alignment to move forward in the same direction within everyone in a team helps to establish a vision that the program can reach for together. Coming in everyday with an open mindset is another great winning strategy to utilize empathy to have good communication where both parties are genuinely heard.Be competitively great and be a CHAMP10N for your wellbeing.www.championwellbeing.com#competitivegreatness #alignment #communication #compassion #openlisteningCONVERSAT10N: Building relationships is key to bringing a successful team together. Getting to know your players and staff by asking questions and actively listening is a great winning strategy to cultivating a championship foundation. Anchoring in truth and having open conversations is another winning strategy to have an open line of communication at all times. This will demonstrate compassion and that you will be heard, rather than listening to talk next, which goes a long way within a team. Sometimes as a coach, they have the responsibly of helping their athletes understand that they are here for you even in the tough moments. It may not be easy for either person but is necessary for growth and forward momentum. Preparation is also key – sometimes, it can be more difficult than actually performing, and it will build a tremendous amount of confidence in athletes.

Injuries can be huge setbacks for competitive athletes. Everyone has a certain window of time in which they can play their best. Time out of competition is time lost that can’t be recovered. For some, they can end a career. The question dovetails well with episode 46’s discussion of workload management, but obviously that’s not the whole story. Dr. Ramsey Nijem gives us insight from his doctoral thesis, as well as his work with professional athletes. There are some great takeaways for coaches, athletes…and even powerlifters. Here are some of our thoughts: What lifestyle factors outside of training might lead to injury? Does drinking or drug use make injuries more likely? How are outcomes and training effects different? Does it help get stronger period, or does it matter how strength is incorporated? How much is controllable? We kick off the conversation by wondering if 25 should just be the legal age for everything? Dr. Nijem earned his Doctorate of Science in Human and Sport Performance as well as Health Promotion and Wellness in 2018. He has published research in top scientific journals in strength and conditioning and is currently investigating injury risk in NBA athletes. He earned his B.S. from UC Santa Barbara and M.S. from Cal State *Fullerton’s Center for Sport Performance (where he studied with Dr. Andy Galpin). You probably aren’t even reading this summary because you are THAT excited to start listening to this episode and we don’t blame you one bit. Earl Boykins was a fan favorite everywhere that he played. You may remember him as the second shortest player in NBA history and the shortest player to ever hang 30 in a game. We just remember him as a damn good basketball player who never quite got the credit he deserved. At 5’5’’ and 135 lbs, Boykins left gyms in awe his entire career. You probably didn’t know he was the 2nd leading scorer in the nation his senior year at Eastern Michigan, or the schools all-time leader in assists. You would think this would be an easy road to destiny, but you are mistaken. Earl was always under the radar, and he would make a 13-year NBA career of proving everyone wrong. He also showed the world no matter how small you might think he is, he would always have big contributions to his team.We loved hanging out with Earl and learning about his incredible basketball journey. We also love that he is still involved with the game, as he is currently the Basketball Director of Student-Athlete Development at University of Arkansas, alongside ex-Nevada coach and fan favorite Eric Musselman. If there is one thing that we have learned about Boykins in this episode, its that he is STILL giving big contributions to his team. Just this time it’s on the sidelines…and we should all know by know to not underestimate his abilities. Enjoy!Thank you Coach Boykins!Be sure to check out the Boykins Basketball Academy! https://boykinsbasketball.com

He then accepted the Head Assistant Boys Basketball Coach position at Berthoud High, where one of his responsibilities was being in charge of skill development for the program, including the feeder system. Since moving back home to the Southwest MO area in May of 2017, Coach Webb has been training athletes for Pure Sweat Basketball at the youth & high school levels, while still working closely with high school coaches in the region.” A former Elite Coach with the Mile High Select basketball organization at Impact Sports Performance, I am a Certified Personal Trainer with the American Council on Exercise, licensed USA Basketball Youth Development Coach, & Varsity Assistant Coach/JV Head Coach for the boys basketball program at Clever High School. As a coach, I have directed camps/clinics in addition to coaching individual & small group skills workouts, club basketball, and high school basketball for over 4 years. In my first year of coaching high school basketball I was a volunteer coach for Longmont High as we went 27-1 and finished Runner-Up in the CO Class 4A State Championships. I then went on to accept a Varsity Assistant Coach position at Berthoud High, and was the Basketball Director for the Berthoud Youth Athletics Association. My passion for training led me to form Greater Than Athletics, LLC, with which I founded basketball camps/clinics in the Northern CO area and worked with athletes year-round. Most recently, I accepted the Assistant Coach position at Clever High school, and am back in my home region of Springfield, MO. I have continued doing skill development with both individuals and small groups.
