In this episode, we're covering:
In this episode, Suge responds to podcast fans who have asked him to go through each person that was a key part of Death Row Records and give his rundown on the good and bad about them. First up, Dr. Dre. Suge talks us back to the early days of meeting Dre when he was signed to Eazy E and Jerry Heller's Ruthless Records. Suge talks about the soundtrack to the movie “Deep Cover,” and how much of an important role it played in getting Death Row off the ground. Suge commends Dre for not running off when the war between Ruthless and Death Row got going. Suge talks about the challenges for many in the music industry that lead a double life and how challenging it was for Suge himself to manage and grow a business in this environment. Suge goes into Dr. Dre's history of beating women, comparing it to the situation with Diddy and Cassie. Suge continues to point out the powers that be at the major record labels and their role in creating and supporting these types of activities. In a special epilogue to this episode, Suge provides a graphic detailing of Dr. Dre's brutal 1991 attack on Fox TV video show host Dee Barnes. Despite gag orders for all parties that came with a legal settlement made at the time, Dr. Dre would later re-hash his violent attack on Ms. Barnes in the Eminem song “Guilty Conscience,” where the Dre and Eminem make fun of what happened. Finally, Suge reveals never-before-heard details he learned from Barnes' husband Ricky Harris shortly before his death in 2016. This episode is sponsored by Earnin. Michael Mann's 'Heat' is many things; intensely beloved Los Angeles crime saga, De Niro-and-Pacino-onscreen-together curiosity, technically brilliant filmmaking accomplishment, both genre-defining and genre-busting, a tour-de-force of casting, atour-de-force of acting, a tour-de-force of directing, writing, editing, production design, and score....it has enduring presence and continued influence. It's one of my top 3 favorite films and as such I've resisted doing it on the podcast because it contains the multitudes above. But a recent rewatch allowed me to appreciate some aspects of the film anew, and inspired this episode. I was particularly struck by the women of 'Heat', which is perhaps a surprise to those who subscribe to the "Michael Mann makes guy films women aren't interested in" take. But the work of Diane Venora, Amy Brenneman, Ashley Judd, and Kim Staunton is worthy of the praise it gets in this episode. The work each actor put into making their characters fully-formed people with their own often conflicted and conflicting reasons for partnering with a criminal or a driven robbery-homicide detective rises these performances from background to foreground. Their scenes are as alive and filled with energy and emotion as the meticulously filmed and edited heist scenes. And also, the supporting casting is singled out in this episode; from Jon Voight, to Tom Noonan, Bud Cort, Mykleti Williamson, Dennis Haysbert, Tone Loc, Ted Levine, Hank Azaria, William Fichtner, Ricky Harris, Natalie Portman and beyond, Bonnie Timmerman and Michael Mann outdid themselves in searching for, in waiting for, just the right actors capable of going all the way in with characterizations deeper than usual for supporting players in films. 'Heat' is a film that is so praised, so accepted as a masterpiece of its kind that it actually takes some work to watch it free of all that positive baggage and appreciate it all over again as an actor's movie, as one person quoted in the podcast says...it's a film of deep emotional power and human connection. In this episode, I surprised myself by plugging into these aspects of 'Heat' and hopefully you will enjoy having your filmic receptors tantalized enough to inspire your own re-watch. Please let me know what you think when you do!

Why make just one parody of a crime show when you can make THREE of them? That's the premise of DANGER THEATRE, a comedic anthology series from the director of WAYNE'S WORLD that ran on the Fox network for only seven episodes, and starred Diedrich Bader as the motorcycle-riding do-gooder THE SEARCHER, Adam West as the leader of Hawaii's TROPICAL PUNCH division, and Todd Field and Ricky Harris as hip tinseltown detectives in 357 MARINA DEL REY. Three comedy crime shows, narrated by Robert Vaughn, that tried to take a bite out of the butt of crime. But was DANGER THEATRE... canceled too soon? Peter Agoston reports from the field in this very special addition to 'The House List' podcast (have you subscribed yet?)... We have a most outstanding guest this week! The world renowned Modern-Funk pioneer, producer/multi-instrumentalist, live-show takr, record breaker, Pasadena's native song, Damon Riddick aka Dâm-FunK. Since Peter and Dam have worked closely for years, we felt it would be a bit more creative to talk about stories not related to the many projects they've been a part of .... so why not start with your first ever DJ gig (in Eagle Rock, opening up if you will, for Kam) and go from there. While preparing for a club-date in Brooklyn, NY that night, the two guys linked up in the wee hours to talk high school, growing up in L.A., Damon's humble beginnings drumming in comedy-club housebands and how influential the late, great Ricky Harris was during that phase in his career. It's a candid, light-hearted, humor filled chat between old buds. We hope you can dig on that... We open the episode with material from Dam's latest EP 'Break Out' (available on Glydezone Recordings), and close with a collaborative song Dam did with the late Junie Morrison entitled "Magic". Special shout out to Keith Eday and PB Wolf. Don't forget to subscribe! You can find The House List on iTunes, Stitcher, SoundCloud and Google Play. Thanks for your support & keep tuning in! Vick talks about how he has grown as a person. In movie news Blade Runner 2049 looks cool, as does Alien:covenant. It's the last episode of the year and the iLLogical crew are joined by Busby's cousin Isaiah as they talk about how they spent their holidays. JC talks about the Raiders chances during the postseason since the injury of Derek Carr. He also goes in on the Warriors after their loss to the Cavs on Christmas Day. The trio give their review for Star Wars: Rouge One and talk about the tragic death of Carrie Fisher. They also talk about the deaths of George Michael and Ricky Harris who died days apart from each other and why some people shouldn't get so caught up in celebrities deaths. Then Busby and JC look back at the albums of 2016. They talk about what album has the title for best of the year, which were underrated, and which album wins the title for the most disappointing of the year (Here's a clue, the album came from the 6ix). They also give their predictions for 2017 and much more. Follow Isaiah and his art on IG: @isaiahbrockett And listen to his podcast at Podnami.libsyn.com See y'all next year!
Minutes before recording the final TFP episode of 2016, I learned that comedian/actor, Ricky Harris passed away. This episode was supposed to be dedicated to my fawning over the movie, "ROGUE ONE", but instead, I reflect and fawn over Ricky Harris' contribution to comedy and entertainment. He was one of the first Kats from Def Comedy Jam that made me fall over laughing. I recall rewinding his bits on VHS amazed at how creative and funny and physical he was. I dedicated the first section of this episode to him. Then, after sharing my thoughts on what type of year 2016 has been vs. what 2017 will be, I offer my view and review of "ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY". Rest in Peace, Ricky Harris and George Michael. Here's to a brighter 2017. We in the Building, son! -"I am one with the Force. The Force is with me."
