While New York City Mayor Eric Adams is under indictment and more of his top aides have departed, the work of running New York City doesn't stop. On this special edition of Firewall, Bradley and Jamie Rubin, board chairman of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), sit down with three close-knit colleagues who are leading New York during this unprecedented time: Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi, Deputy Mayor for Housing, Economic Development, Workforce Maria Torres-Springer, and Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Service Anne Williams-Isom.In this candid conversation, the three Deputy Mayors discuss how they are leading their teams through this moment, what priority projects they are continuing to push forward, and how their collaborative approach helps them get the job done for New Yorkers. "This is historic. To have three deputy mayors that get along, like each other. We don't have fiefdoms. We're sharing jurisdiction. It is a better use of taxpayer dollars to have this level of cooperation,“ says Deputy Mayor Joshi. “I wake up every morning not like, ‘Woe is me' and ‘Lord, what's happening?'...I wake up every morning asking, ‘What more can I be doing?' And when I go to bed at night, I hope that I am exhausted from making sure that I'm doing good on behalf of New Yorkers,” adds Deputy Mayor Williams-Isom. Earlier this year, the prolific American political journalist Sasha Issenberg came on the show to offer a playbook for winning elections in our disinformation age. And, on a recent trip to Los Angeles, I sat down with Issenberg in his Venice home to talk more broadly about the American political system for our KEEN ON AMERICA series. In particular, he addressed perhaps the most pressing issue of all about the future of American politics - how we might build more trust and transparency in both media and the system itself. Sasha Issenberg is the author of five books including THE VICTORY LAB, which upon its 2012 release Politico called “Moneyball for politics,” and the follow-up THE LIE DETECTIVES, published in March 2024 by Columbia Global Reports. His other books have covered topics ranging from the global sushi business to medical tourism and the same-sex marriage debate. He covered the 2008 election as a national political reporter in the Washington bureau of The Boston Globe, 2012 for Slate, 2016 for Bloomberg Politics and Businessweek, and 2020 for The Recount. He is the American political correspondent for Monocle, and has written for New York, The New York Times Magazine, and George, where he served as a contributing editor. He teaches in the political science department at UCLA.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children.Keen On is a reader-supported publication. In an era of artificial intelligence and increasingly complex misinformation, how can we navigate what is true this election year? This year, campaigns are engaged in another cycle of misleading and, at times, dissuading Americans from voting.  We dive into the topic of misinformation in modern political campaigns with renowned reporter and author Sasha Issenberg. In his new book, "The Lie Detectives," Issenberg goes back to the use of misinformation as far back as the Thomas Jefferson presidential campaign, and how the tactic has evolved with the internet and social media. The conversation explores the impact of false information on public opinion and the integrity of elections, highlighting real-world examples and the role of social media platforms in the dissemination of misleading content. Issenberg's expertise sheds light on how both parties are doing this and the consequences for the democratic process. — Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. As we head into another presidential election year, few issues feel as pressing as the spread of political misinformation. How can political campaigns fight back against the barrage of lies and disinformation? As time, tension, and technology all progress in our world, we're not always prepared for the acceleration and its impact on the political climate. The public can often be left to weed through a seemingly endless digital news cycle and the task of differentiating between fact, misinformed fictions, and intentional disinformation. As the population faces the high-stakes election season once again, Sasha Issenberg turns a critical lens toward the complicated landscape of the American political institution, rising incentives, and the ever-expanding social media landscape. A decade after his last dive into social science and modern political analysis in his book The Victory Lab: The Secret Science of Winning Campaigns, Issenberg returns to expand more on the behind-the-scenes mechanics of politics. His newest book The Lie Detectives: In Search of a Playbook for Defeating Disinformation and Winning Elections urges readers to understand more from a range of high-level journalists, strategists, critics, and political operatives in their efforts to grapple online misinformation. From digital forums of anonymous amateurs to high-visibility government and party officials, the challenges and tactics at play throughout cyberspace have expansive reach and real-world consequences. The Lie Detectives pulls to the forefront the political class striving to tackle these issues as they emerge, and what the threat of disinformation could mean for democracy, especially at pivotal times. Sasha Issenberg is a journalist and author who has been published in New York, The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, The Boston Globe, and George, where he also served as a contributing editor. He teaches at the UCLA Department of Political Science and is a correspondent for Monocle. His previous books include The Sushi Economy and The Engagement: America's Quarter-Century Struggle Over Same-Sex Marriage.   Austin Jenkins is a staff writer at Pluribus News, covering tech policy and other issues in state legislatures. The most troubling casualty of today's social media age is our shared sense of reality. Perceptions of reality still exist, but they often come packaged, mirroring a priori assumptions about the world. So how to win democratic elections in this age of multiple informations? How to promote/peddle truths that will get people to vote for your candidate? That's the story Sasha Issenberg writes about in his new book, THE LIE DETECTIVES, a kind of Moneyball for our disinformation age. One of America's smartest political journalists, Issenberg explains, with bracing clarity, how to win elections in a democracy awash with lies and liars. Sasha Issenberg is the author of three previous books, on topics ranging from the global sushi business to medical tourism and the science of political campaigns. He covered the 2008 election as a national political reporter in the Washington bureau of The Boston Globe, the 2012 election for Slate, the 2016 election for Bloomberg Politics and Businessweek, and 2020 for The Recount. This week we're airing a rerun of one of our most popular episodes from June, 2021 with lawyer Dan Foley. On June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court ratified same-sex marriage, a monumental achievement after a more than 25-year battle across the country.Recently, journalist Sasha Issenberg published a riveting, comprehensive history of that struggle, titled The Engagement: America's Quarter Century Struggle Over Same-Sex Marriage, tracing it back to 1990, when the political movement took off with a case in the Hawaii Supreme Court. At that point, Issenberg explains, no significant gay rights group had endorsed marriage as an objective. But, in 1990, when three same-sex couples applied for marriage licenses in Honolulu and were denied, they turned to a lawyer named Dan Foley. Less than three years later, the Hawaii Supreme Court became the first court in the world to conclude that queer couples' freedom to marry was a basic civil right. The rest is a fascinating and groundbreaking history of the national journey toward June 26, 2015.

It's been a bad week for Donald Trump. Herschel Walker lost the Georgia Senate runoff and a New York jury found the Trump Organization guilty of criminal tax fraud. But the former President (and current presidential candidate) still has something to look forward to: a busy conservative Supreme Court which has three Trump-appointed justices. Today, Kara and Nayeema discuss two of the cases the court heard this week. One focuses on a North Carolina election law case that could upend democratic protections in states like Florida, Arizona and Michigan. The other is about free speech and gay marriage and is close to Kara's heart.  In the interview, Kara speaks to a panel of experts about this very case: 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis, a free speech case brought by a web designer who doesn't want to be penalized for not providing wedding websites for same-sex couples. She explores the impact this case could have with Louise Melling, Deputy Legal Director at the ACLU and Director of its Ruth Bader Ginsburg Center for Liberty; Dale Carpenter, the Judge William Hawley Atwell Chair of Constitutional Law, and Professor of Law at Southern Methodist University; and Sasha Issenberg, Washington correspondent for The Monocle and author of “The Engagement," about the battle for same sex marriage in America.  Stay tuned until the very end when Kara rants about how a onesie became a symbol of something far more important. By 2019, Pew polling on that same question of what we now call marriage equality had totally flipped: 61% supported same-sex marriage, while 31% opposed it. This represented the most rapid and profound change in American attitudes on any social issue since we had any measurements. So how did it happen? Our guest today is Sasha Issenberg.
