Allegra Huston is the author of "Love Child: A Memoir of Family Lost and Found", the novels "A Stolen Summer" and "Say My Name," and many screenplays including the award-winning short film "Good Luck, Mr. Gorski," which she also produced. In 2019 she published how-to books on “the stuff nobody teaches you,” including "How to Read for an Audience" by Allegra and "How to Edit and Be Edited" by Allegra and James Navé. Allegra's and James' most recent collaboration is a book for authors, "Write What You Don't Know." "At major turning points in our lives, the circumstances are rarely perfect for us to make the next move or decision about what to do next. The obstacles may be vast, but it's at this point that you 'throw your hat over the fence,' or in other words, 'just go for it!' “In my experience, most people don't know what they are good at—what they are naturally good at. So sometimes you have to find one or kind of create one for yourself. You have got to put food on the table and send your kid to school. So, there are those reasons. I think if we are good girls or boys, we try to fulfill the expectations that are inevitably held for us. If we're bad girls and bad boys, we're fighting against those expectations. But in either case, we're still being driven by other people's expectations. It often takes time, maturity, mistakes and even unhappiness to lead you to what you really want to do–to start to find what it is that makes you excited in the morning, that makes you want to be doing whatever it is that you want to do.”

After no less than 5 name changes, and a revolving door of band members, by the year 2000, budding R&B group Destiny's Child were finally in their most recognizable form as a three-piece. By the time the album cycle for their third record 'The Writing's on The Wall' Destiny's Child had two #1 singles in “Bills Bills Bills” and “Say My Name,” while “Jumpin' Jumpin'” would reach #3, and “Bug-A-Boo” would be recognized for its boundary-pushing production. The Writing's On The Wall would go on to sell more than 13 million copies and become one of the biggest R&B albums of all time. Destiny's Child were on top of the world. And they weren't about to stop. In October 2000, they released a song called “Independent Women Part 1,” an empowering anthem recorded for the Charlie's Angels movie starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu. That song held the #1 for 11 consecutive weeks, becoming the group's biggest song to date and the Guinness Book of World Records' longest-running number-one song by a female group. While all this was happening, Destiny's Child were wrapping up the recording of their third album - and it was about to take them down a path of even bigger superstardom. Stephen Sample: It is a vicious game. My nephew used to love playing UNO, so I'd play it with my niece and nephew, but what would be funny is, for whatever reason, he would end up being the one getting all the cards and you have these little hands and he'd be holding- Dave Young: Oh yeah. Yeah. Stephen Sample: Now the funny thing is he would think it was hilarious that he would have all these. So it was kind of fun because he would find it funny that he'd have, "Well I clearly had the advantage because I've got all the great cards because I have half the deck in my hand." Dave Young: Yeah. How can I lose? Stephen Sample: How can- Dave Young: How could I lose? That's like me on a golf course. I've got way more golf experience than you do because I hit the ball a lot more than you do. Stephen Sample: So as soon as I got looking into UNO, I couldn't help but have all these really great memories of Jeffrey and Robin and playing UNO with them because it really is a great game to play with kids. Dave Young: Yeah. It's fun and, like I said, I always feel bad giving somebody a card that loads their hand up. I don't know why. That's just- Stephen Sample: The way you are. Dave Young: I don't have that killer instinct. Stephen Sample: So just to put in perspective how big UNO is, UNO is the best-selling card game in history. Dave Young: Really? Stephen Sample: Yes. Number one. Dave Young: Okay. By defined as a game specifically with those like that? Stephen Sample: With cards, like a card game. Dave Young: Yeah, but not- Stephen Sample: Selling card game. Dave Young: They haven't sold more cards than Bicycle playing card company. Stephen Sample: No. No because- Dave Young: But just a specific game. Stephen Sample: Yes. They've sold 150 million packs in 80 countries. Dave Young: That's a lot of UNO cards. Stephen Sample: That's a lot of UNO cards. It sure is. Dave Young: And 80 countries? Stephen Sample: Yes. Dave Young: See, that makes sense because you don't need to speak English to play UNO. Stephen Sample: Right. It's very simple. Right. You don't need instructions for it. Dave Young: It's numbers and colors. Yeah. Stephen Sample: Yeah. So it was invented by Merle Robbins in 1971 in Cincinnati. So the 1970s- Dave Young: '71. Okay. Stephen Sample: Yeah. It was 1970s.
