709 Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92
About a month ago I presented a guest mix of sleep music from Brian Bieniowski, whom I knew from the heyday of the Hypnos Records forum in the mid 2000s. "That Beautiful Land of Nod" is indeed a beautiful sleep mix. Thankfully, back in 2007 Brian created two Land of Nod mixes. So here is volume 2 for your listening and sleeping pleasure. Here is what Brian said about the Land of Nod mixes back in 2007: "It wasn't until the early nineties when I discovered real ambient music suited for the purpose of lying down and listening. It felt finally natural to take to my bed after starting the CD player and allowing the soft music to carry my mind forth for a while until sleep took hold. This mix, That Beautiful Land of Nod, is the product of over twelve years of "field research" in ambient sleep music. All of the selections, new and old, on these two discs, are pieces of music I have personally played in the times before and during sleep. Each track is special to me, these soothing zones, as they have not only brought me hours of comforted sleep, but also tantalizing, never-lasting minutes of wild and wonderful imagery in those moments before unconsciousness occurs. Each track maps a route across my consciousness over twelve years of sleep listening. It is my honest hope that this becomes the mix you never fully listen to—if you are at all like me, you'll be asleep by track five or six every time. So, please, draw the shades, relax, pleasant dreams...." Cheers! Nick found a new album he's excited to share this week. Legendary bassist Pino Palladino & producer, multi-instrumentalist Blake Mills released “Notes With Attachments” earlier this year. It's both very easy to listen to and a 13 piece band performing complicated jazz arrangements of West African & Cuban inspired funk melodies. It's also worth checking out!Songs:Pino Palladino & Blake Mills - “Djurkel”Pino Palladino & Blake Mills - “Ekuté”Greg joins us from the road on his way up to Seattle & he thought it was a perfect opportunity for another “State of the Art”. Greg sticks with Seattle this time, Jay shares his favorite bands & artists from his home state of Pennsylvania & Nick tosses in some Maryland bands as well. Song: Bill Frisell, David Holland, Elvin Jones - “Moon River”For our ninety-second episode, Jay brings us the music of 1992. We start off with Tom Waits “Bone Machine”, swing by the pop charts for a bit, move along to Dr. Dre's “Chronic”, stop at Pavement's debut “Slanted & Enchanted” & Rage Against The Machine's self-titled first album, en route to Aphex Twin's “Selected Ambient Works 85-92” and rendezvous at September 29, which gave us Alice In Chains “Dirt” & Stone Temple Pilot's debut “Core”. Turned out to be a pretty solid year!Songs:Tom Waits - “Dirt in the Ground”Alice in Chains - “Them Bones”

Eddie Hale began exploring electronic music in 2003. Embodied in a heritage of classical to contemporary music, it wasn’t until he engaged in seminal records like Nightmares on Wax – Smoker’s Delight and Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works that the electronic spark was ignited. Eddie was immediately influenced by the cutting-edge 90’s and early 00’s Detroit legacy, followed by a move to Berlin, which, as he recalls “had a big impact on me through the freedom experienced there, but also the heavy ‘Berlin luft’ atmosphere, which I found really moving.” 2008 saw the start of Eddie’s DJ career; as he cut his teeth with house and electro in home town Melbourne. Reflecting on this period, he acknowledges, “those early days really cemented my love for it, being given the opportunity to perform at iconic Australian festivals like Strawberry Fields and Rainbow Serpent.” 2014 saw Eddie travel across the globe to display his hard work in Amsterdam at ADE, a set at Mardi Gras 2017 in Sydney, followed by a 2019 trip to Berlin’s notorious Tresor. His productions consist of rich, swirling, synthesised chords; raw drum patterns and deep grooves. The Eddie Hale sound is soulful, futuristic and full of energy - filled by techno, breaks and ambience. This versatility, coupled with sound production prowess has inevitably led him to collaborations, projects and releases with some of the finest artists and labels from Berlin to Detroit. Notable mentions include 2015 EP’s on Flash Recordings, and DJ300’s Motech followed by acclaimed cuts on respected imprints Intacto Records and Kevin Saunderson’s classic KMS. More recently, mid2019 saw ‘Ritus’, an alias between Eddie and Ray Kajioka on Swedish label Parabel. 2020 will play base for new material on ODD/ EVEN, Andre Kronert’s bespoke vinyl label, with a remix by Jon Hester included. Subsequent to this comes the launch of record label ‘Denude’ a new special project by Eddie, consisting of vinyl releases, supported by remixes from Joel Mull and TWR72. Support YACHT on Bandcamp: https://yacht.bandcamp.com/track/avril-14th-single YACHT Quarantine Cover Series No. 4 This is the most beautiful Aphex Twin song, "Avril 14th," from the album Drukqs (2001), composed originally for a high-tech Yamaha player piano called the Disklavier. It's been raining nonstop in Los Angeles and we've been spiraling inwards into all our favorite music; we read Marc Weidenbaum's 33 1/3 book about "Selected Ambient Works" recently and learned that Richard D. James does a lot of his best work in between naps. This is a song for the in-between period of sleep and waking. Promesse faite il y a longtemps et que je commence à tenir. Voici la première partie de la rétrospective Aphex Twin. De sa jeunesse à son premier album.
Shock World Service 090: The Spatial Relationship by Jon Averill 28/12/19 Dublin, Ireland 1. Mark Isham - Winter It is winter at the time of recording. I'm always on the ball. 2. Gabriel Yared – 37°2 Le Matin I know very little about this track, it's French. It means '37.2°C in the morning'. Le Google will you more. 3. Lifted - Now More Than Ever Actually probably the newest track on this podcast. Very much a mash-up of styles in all senses. Beats & samples drop in never to be heard again. There's a threat of a structure but that seems to never quite manifest. 4. 7 Hurtz - 3 Sisters. One of the very last compact discs I own & a great one at that. From the album Electroleum on Trevor Jackson's Output recordings. The term 'funky electro' sounds awful but this track does not. 5. Rare Silk - Storm I thought this was a much newer record before researching, mixing doo-wop style vocals with modern chord progressions & primal rhythms. 6. Peder Mannerfelt – Building of the Mountain Hypnotic & tense rave stabbing 7. Bing & Ruth - The How of it Sped From David Moore's Brooklyn collective Bing & Ruth, this track taken from their release 'No Home of the Mind 'on 4AD. 8. Girl Unit - Back From 2018's Song Feel EP, very much embracing the glistening DX-7 driven 1980s aesthetic. 9. Steve Hauschildt - Saccade A saccade is the measurement of eye movements, more accurately a rapid movement of the eye between fixation points. 10. Tuxedomoon - Do it for Van Gogh From the Blue Velvet Revisited soundtrack. A 2016 documentary about the making of David Lynch's Blue Velvet 11. Luke Slater - Weave Your Web Been a massive fan of Luke Slater since his 1997 album Freek Funk but never really found a place for his music on the podcasts. Wrong righted. 12. RX-101 - Pulse Shaper Taken from this year's (2019) Dopamine album which is an unashamed soundalike for Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works 85-92. 13. Cylob - Skylight Another Aphex associated track in that Cylob put out a lot of his early work on Rephlex Records 14. Henry Mancini - We've Loved Before And so here we are again, the end of our journey. Guided here by Henry Mancini who's music I for some reason call 'log collecting music'. See ya.

The set is a statement of both mixing and sound skills. The tracks are like puzzle pieces set to match one into another to create a distinct journey through sound. The tempo is fast as my musical roots are set in the techno scene All said, sit back and let it flow!” About @steviestevesteven Steve has a simple goal in mind, making people connect through music. There are few DJs out there than can transpose into the collective consciousness of the crowd as he can. So far he got to play alongside the likes of Arapu, Nima Gorji, Melodie and many more but the biggest highlight of his career so far being warming up for Valentino Kanzyani. Production-wise, he likes to keep mostly to himself and share his works only with a select few. https://www.facebook.com/stevem0sic/ Current city: Limassol, Cyprus

I can still very vividly recall the first time I heard ambient music. It was during my teenage years. I popped in the record store at our local mall—a Sam Goody or something like that—and picked up Selected Ambient Works, Vol. II by Aphex Twin. I had read about ambient but had never actually heard it. I remember being very surprised and delighted to find this album at such a small shop in our relatively small town. (Mind you, this was in the mid ‘90s, so music consumption via the internet wasn’t really a thing except for the tech elite.) I wandered back to the car, popped in the CD, and was absolutely mesmerized and transplanted by what I heard. The dark, eerie vibes of SAW2 aren’t exactly the ideal introduction to the genre, but I managed to gulp it all down without any trouble. From that moment forward, I knew this music would be a passion of mine. And fittingly, the SAW duology is some of the most celebrated and sought after material in Richard D. James’ (aka Aphex Twin’s) catalog. However his ambient work at large is scarce in comparison to his vastly more plentiful beat-centric material. When James shocked the electronic music world earlier this year by leaking 175 previously unreleased and unheard early demos on SoundCloud, it was no big surprise that ambient music made up a tiny fraction of the flood. Not that I’m complaining—this clutch of tracks is an absolute treasure—but I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t hoping for more SAW2-style ambient out of the whole ordeal. After all that’s the era of his career that shaped me the most. I’ve noticed that many of the fan mixes dedicated to the flood—both simple SoundCloud sets and intricate DJ sets alike—seem to favor James’ SAW1-era ambient techno tracks over the beatless tracks more akin to SAW2. (Even James put together a SoundCloud playlist entitled SAW 1.5, which is all techno.) But since I’m clearly biased toward his beatless efforts, those were my focus for this podcast. Luckily James’ friend and collaborator Mike Paradinas (aka µ-Ziq) followed James’ lead and leaked 156 of his own demos, which include a few beatless numbers. The combined beatless efforts of the two producers exceeds an hour, and it makes for good album-style listening. This may be the closest thing we’ll ever get to another SAW2-style album out of RDJ, so let’s savor these selections.

I've already done a "Favorite Ambient Albums" mix and a "Favorite Ambient Artists" mix so it makes sense that there would eventually be a "Favorite Ambient Tracks" mix. And here it is. Ambient music is definitely not a song based genre. I like to remember works as a whole or an artist's work as a whole. There are artists that I absolutely love but can't name more than a handful of specific tunes. So it sort of goes against form to make a list of fav ambient tracks. That being said, when I sat down to make a list there were a few cuts that I immediately knew I wanted in the mix, like Structures From Silence. This is a looong mix, clocking in at 2 hours and 9 minutes. I wanted to let some of the longer tracks breathe, even if I couldn't play the entire 28 minutes of Structures. Here's a few thoughts on the tunes that made the cut... The first track in the mix is a beautiful watery tune, Submarine Poetry, from krill.minima. I used this one as the first cut in my first "sea" mix and every time I play that mix I marvel at how perfect this tune is. Next up is Lantern Marsh by Brian Eno. I could have filled this entire mix with Eno favorites but I had to try and limit myself somehow. I love On Land and this cut pretty much sums up that wonderful album for me. Track number three is Lear by Stuart Dempster, Panaiotis and Pauline Oliveros. I'm curious as to how widely known the album Deep Listening is. This is not classic Eno or Roach ambient. The recording took place inside a huge cistern which is responsible for its tremendous reverb. The unusual instruments of accordion, trombone, didgeridoo and voice use the acoustics of the cistern to create long sustained drones. The effect is hypnotic & beautiful. The fourth cut is the previously mentioned Steve Roach track, Structures From Silence. A lot of ambient music doesn't really have a recognizable melody but this song is about as close as you'll get. I've been listening to this one for a loooooong time and never seem to tire of it. Next is Peter Gabriel's The Nest That Sailed The Sky from the Ovo album. The album is pretty hit and miss but this tune is gorgeous. Another Eno tune drops next and its Drift from the Apollo album. There several cuts on this album that could make a lot of great ambient lists but I just like this song because it reminds me of the scenes it was used with in the film For All Mankind. If you haven't seen the film do so asap! The next cut has been a sleep time favorite for years. It's A Smooth Surface by A Produce. I love all the space between notes. It doesn't really change much over the course of a long track, but that's what I love about it. I have a special place in my ambient heart for the eighth track, Silence Speaks In Shadows, because it was recorded not far from where I live here in Wisconsin. Paul Vnuk Jr. recorded environmental sounds near his studio in Cudahy. Those sounds included thunderstorms, street noise, trains and even a police siren wailing in the night. Combine those field recordings with some droney synths & you've got a great night time atmospheric piece. The Most Beautiful Blue by Eluder is the next cut. This is a track that I didn't realize how much I liked it until I realized that it kept showing up in mixes & playlists. Similar to Submarine Poetry, it has that great ocean/sea feel to it that I love. This next cut, Diamond Cove, is from a favorite artist of mine, Kyle Bobby Dunn. It's from his album Bring Me The Head Of Kyle Bobby Dunn. Just like Eno I could pick a bunch of KBD songs to put in this kind of mix but I settled on this one because I like its simplicity. The KBD song segues nicely into the Olancha Farewell by Harold Budd. I didn't know how much I loved this track until I recently heard for the first time in years. Normally when I think of Harold Budd I think of piano but this track is just too beautiful to keep out of this mix. It's similar in feel to the KBD song that precedes it and to Rhubarb by Aphex Twin. Olancha Farewell is from the album Lovely Thunder. The Marsen Jules song, Oeillet Sauvage, is similar in feel to the A Produce track from earlier in the mix. It has lots of space in between notes, which I love. The third Eno song in the mix shows up next. It's 1/1 from Music for Airports. I remember buying this on vinyl the day it was released back in 1978. I had come to Eno through David Bowie so I knew of some of his quieter stuff on Low and Before and After Science. But I was unprepared for the deliberate repetition and slowness of Music for Airports. It blew me away. This album has remained a favorite to this day. After Eno we move on to Mark Rownd - Painting Twilight. I hesitated to put this track in because the album as a whole treads very close to new age territory. But I sort of fell for this album back when it was released in 1998 and it has stayed with me. Especially the title track, Painting Twilight. Its got that ebb and flow, breathing quality that I go for. Next up is the classic Aphex Twin cut, Rhubarb from Selected Ambient Works, Vol.II. I read somewhere once that this cut should be the theme song form the monolith in 2001:A Space Odyssey. The next cut is even more Eno music, this time in the form of the Budd/Eno tune, An Echo Of Night from The Pearl. A great atmospheric tune that would fit well on Eno's On Land. One of my favorite ambient albums of the last ten years is Butterfly by Disturbed Earth. First released on Atmoworks in 2012, it was originally recorded in 1977 using a Fripp-style two reel to reel set up. I love ambient guitar in general and this one just hits the sweet spot of ambient guitar, ebb and flow, and classic sound and fell. I'm not sure how many folks would put this next track on their best of all time lists. If I were hearing this cut, The Path Not Taken by Thom Brennan, for the first time today I'm sure if I would like it as much as I do. I know that part of my love for this track is wrapped in the time I discovered it back in the mid 90s when tribal ambient was a big deal. I've pretty much stepped away from the tribal stuff now, but this track still gets me every time. We reach the end of this epic mix with Fripp & Eno - Evening Star, the title track from Evening Star. I know, more Eno. But I couldn't resist this one. Beautiful cut, perfect end for a favorite mix. Wow! That's easily the most I've ever written for a mix post. Hope that didn't bore you to death. I wasn't planning on a track by track essay but I started talking about a few and it just took off. Anyway I hope you enjoy this mix I much as I did.
