As Andrew Steinwold sees it, we can't expect people to change the way they transact based on arguments built around "blockchain transactions per second, staking, [and] down with the Fed." That's not how to get them to understand and appreciate the value of crypto. On the other hand, fun things like "art, video games, and collectibles" will attract the masses and will pique their interest in this new digital world. NFTs, Steinwold explains to Sergio Silva, will be the thing that brings the people to the cryptoverse. Steinwold, managing partner at Sfermion, and Silva, an NFT collector and the sales director at Fireblocks, also talk about gamers, a slowing economy's potential to affect Web3 investment, and the crypto industry's future.

Crypto Storm

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 5, 2021 35:55

This week on “Opinionated,” the hosts dive deep into the non-fungible token (NFT) boom with guest Andrew Steinwold, managing partner at Sfermion, an NFT fund. Andrew works with wealthy clients from around the world who want a piece of the digital art boom. Our biggest question for Andrew was last week's biggest news: Visa bought a CryptoPunk.By Andrew's telling, paying $150,000 for a pixelated head is a relative bargain, especially as an advertising tool. It's good for CryptoPunks, too: Its narrative firepower only grows stronger with a name brand such as Visa buying in.But what of the wacky NFT world beyond? Do other digital art pieces carry the same gravitas? Could Danny, who blew $150 on an NFT of a duck, ever recoup his cash? Andrew dredges up the ugly truth: Not all projects are going to make it.He's more bullish on the burgeoning internet economy that NFTs could support, things like digital land rights, digital clothing, digital games. His bets – and his clients' bets – are that NFTs can create a new rail in online commerce and ownership.Andrew provides the gang with some insight into the current NFT boom and debates what makes something valuable, even if it doesn't physically exist.Mentioned in this episode:Andrew's podcast: Zima RedAndrew's NFT fund: SfermionSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

A transaction in NFT is a transaction in some sort of digital ownership. Or as the Bloomberg columnist Matt Levine put it, “digital ostentation.” As the new owner of the NFT of a song or a jpeg, you don't have exclusionary access to the 0's and the 1's that make up the digital object. But there is still scarcity ascribed to the thing you're buying, because the seller promises to only do this transaction a small number of times. So as a buyer, you may feel good about a special bond you have now formed with the seller - in general an artist. Or you can signal to the world that you have deep enough pockets to have made such a transaction. In our debate today, on one side, we have a London School of Economics professor who is both a staunch no-coiner and an NFT bear. On the other, we have a founding partner of a NFT dedicated fund that started in 2019. Our cohost is from a renowned crypto fund, an NFT advocate and a collector herself. So this will be interesting. If you would like to debate or want to nominate someone, please DM me at @blockdebate on Twitter. Please note that nothing in our podcast should be construed as financial advice.Listen-along transcript: https://share.descript.com/view/NnA9YEyInkESource of select items discussed in the debate (and supplemental material):Edmund Schuster: http://edmundschuster.com/Andrew Steinwold's podcast: https://twitter.com/zima_redAndrew Steinwold's NFT & Metaverse newsletter: http://andrewsteinwold.substack.comMaria Shen at Electric Capital: https://www.electriccapital.com/team/maria-shenNBA Topshot: https://nbatopshot.com/Opensea (NFT sale platform): https://opensea.io/Beeple's $69M NFT sale: https://www.theverge.com/2021/3/11/22325054/beeple-christies-nft-sale-cost-everydays-69-millionTwitter thread questioning whether NFT is true un-censorable: https://twitter.com/jonty/status/1372163423446917122Guest bios: Edmund Schuster is an Associate Professor of corporate law at the London School of Economics and Political Science. //Coinscrum Markets EP43 Segment - DeFi Convention with Andrew Steinwold, Managing Partner, Sfermion and Alex Batlin, CEO, Trustology //Segment Overview:: Although Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT's) have become the latest hot topic amongst blockchain commentators, the concepts upon which they are based pre-date not only CryptoKitties, the first example of this particular use-case launched on Ethereum back in 2017, but the Ethereum network itself. Whilst more recent developments and traction in the sector have undoubtedly raised the profile of NFTs and helped to improve the user experience when interacting with them, not all of the issues and flaws that were apparent back when Bitcoin was acting as the base layer for experimentation have been addressed, with some of the headline benefits and features often being touted still open to scrutiny. Andrew and Alex joined Paul Gordon to discuss the opportunities and the risks. //Read on Coinscrum Website www.coinscrum.com or watch the video version on our Youtube Channel. //Follow our Social Media:: www.linkedin.com/company/coinscrum www.twitter.com/coinscrum www.facebook.com/Coinscrum //Join our Facebook Community:: https://www.facebook.com/groups/Coinscrum //Our sponsors:: Buy & HODL BTC/ETH/LTC/XRP on Luno - http://www.coinscrum.com/luno-exchange/ Earn up to 8% interest with Blockfi - http://www.coinscrum.com/blockfi-earn-interest/ Analyse on-chain data at ByteTree - http://www.coinscrum.com/bytetree-terminal/ Get a Custodian Wallet at Trustology - http://www.coinscrum.com/custodian-wallet
