Join the group chat! Send us a text! The polls are still (hopefully?) broken. The stakes are more unprecedented than ever. Last week, the Supreme Court unanimously protected the abortion pill, mifepristone (for now), but didn't close the door to hear new cases involving plaintiffs “with standing.” They also protected bump stocks, a tool that effectively turns a semi-automatic rifle into a machine gun. Now Senate Republicans are playing games and blocking Senate Democrats' attempts to write the TRUMP ban into law. We get into the games the NRA and Republicans have played since that ban was put into effect in 2017. Continuing with SCOTUS, Brian and Glennis catch up on the drama with the Alitos and their extremist, vindictive ideologies laid bare in a secret audio recording. Then, they talk about the latest example of Sinclair Broadcasting Group pushing scripts with a national political agenda onto local news outlets across the country. Finally, they discuss Democrats' strategy leading into the ‘24 election - how the Biden campaign is messaging on his own record, plans, and the contrast with his opponent (a convicted felon). Episode 2 of Season 4 on Bleav in Sports Law with Jeremy Evans, discussing how the Sinclair Broadcasting Group is looking to develop a streaming platform to attract and reach more customers. California Sports Lawyer® (www.CSLlegal.com).
Sinclair Broadcasting Group owns 193 television stations in the United States, mostly in the South and the Midwest. They are also the owners of TennisChannel. After Fox News and Facebook, Sinclair is the largest perpetrator of The Big Lie: the completely unsubstantiated claim that Donald Trump won the 2020 Presidential election. This means that tennis fans, who are, on average, on the left side of the political spectrum are financing the lies and policies of the political right. We call for an immediate and complete boycott of all advertisers on TennisChannel. A Change.org petition will also be circulating demanding that Sinclair divest itself of TennisChannel.
Inside Living on the Edge episode nine, Jason and Dan discuss how mobile operators view cloud native prioritization, 5G security, Google's long distance lasers and shuffling strategies at AWS and Microsoft. What's new on the edge lightning round includes new edge pilots at the U.S. Department of Defense, Napa's BottleRock and Sinclair Broadcasting Group.
Scott Thuman, Chief Political Correspondent at Sinclair Broadcasting Group, reports from Minneapolis where Derek Chauvin stands trial in the George Floyd murder case.
SportsPro editor at large Eoin Connolly returns to recap the second day of the SportsPro OTT Summit USA. ESPN’s Burke Magnus and the PGA Tour’s Rick Anderson lay out the state of the union for SportsPro managing director Nick Meacham (2.18), and Verimatrix chief revenue officer Lu Bolden (20.20) talks to Eoin about how security solutions can keep up with an ever-wider range of integrated digital experiences. Then there is more from the virtual conference stage, with insight from Concacaf on aligning responsibility with media strategy (41.25), from Formula E on moving a valuable target audience through the funnel (46.45), from Sinclair Broadcasting Group on the route to gamification and customisation (48.39), and from TikTok (51.40) about leaning into the creative culture on the platform.
In this episode, Niki, Neil, and Natalia debate the rise of Sinclair Broadcasting, life coach Tony Robbins’ dismissal of the #MeToo movement, and the fraught history of college early admissions. Support Past Present on Patreon: http://www.pastpresentpodcast.com/episodes Here are some links and references mentioned during this week’s show: Conservative media giant Sinclair Broadcasting Group inspired outrage when a viral video showed anchors reading a prepared script bashing the media. Natalia cited Niki’s S. News article on the role of the FCC in preventing the kind of domination to which Sinclair aspires. Self-help guru Tony Robbins enraged the internet when he maligned the #MeToo movement at one of his stadium-sized seminars. You can watch the full video of his internaction with Nanine McCool here. Natalia cited two classic historical works to understand the history of self-help: Richard Hofstadter’s Anti-Intellectualism in American Life and Christopher Lasch’s The Culture of Narcissism. Natalia also recommended William Davies’ The Happiness Industry and the HBO show “Enlightened.” Natalia recently wrote about how Tony Robbins and other self-help gurus have often stood in the way of social change in a piece for the Washington Post. The Justice Department has launched a probe into colleges offering early admissions. Natalia cited two historians’ book-length works: Jerome Karabel’s The Chosen and Nancy Malkiel’s Keep the Damned Women Out! On today's episode of Loud & Clear, Brian Becker and John Kiriakou are joined by William Pepper, an attorney who has worked for years to prove the role of the government in the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He and Dr. King allied around the anti-war movement and he continued to represent the King family after Dr. King’s death.Tomorrow, April 4, marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Recent polls show that a majority of Americans do not believe that his vision of a just society has been realized. Many Americans—including the King family—also question the official story about who was responsible for the assassination. Tuesday’s weekly series continues, looking at the top economic issues of the day, focusing on Trump’s criticism of Amazon. Financial policy analyst Daniel Sankey joins the show. Thousands of teachers across Kentucky and Oklahoma have entered the second day of their strikes for better pay, benefits, and working conditions in a movement that has spread rapidly since West Virginia teachers successfully struck earlier this year. Brian and John speak with Derek Ford, an assistant professor of education studies at DePauw University and a community organizer whose latest book is “Education and the Production of Space.” A report published over the weekend by sports news website Deadspin showed dozens of television news anchors from local stations around the country owned by the conservative Sinclair Broadcasting Group reciting the exact same script warning against what they called “biased and false news.” The episode reveals the power of a company long criticized for pushing its conservative agenda into homes across the country. Tim Karr, the senior director of strategy and communications at Free Press, joins the show. Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Ankara today to launch Turkey’s first nuclear power plant with Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to discuss Syria, energy, and defense issues. The Russian state nuclear energy agency will build the $20 billion nuclear power facility. The Russian state news agency also noted that Russia will expedite the delivery of the Russian S-400 air defense system to Turkey. Mark Sleboda, an international affairs and security analyst, joins Brian and John. Prosecutors in the Russia probe revealed last night that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein authorized them in August of last year to investigate allegations that President Trump’s campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, was colluding with Russian government officials to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. The revelation comes amid a lawsuit filed by Manafort, which challenges the Special Counsel’s investigative authority and the indictments already issued. Jim Kavanagh, the editor of ThePolemicist.net who recently published “The Warm War: Russiamania at the Boiling Point” at Counterpunch, and Dan Kovalik, a human rights and labor lawyer who is the author of the soon to be released book “The Plot to Attack Iran,” joins the show.Yesterday, China announced an additional $3 billion in tariffs on US goods, and the stock market took a huge hit. The big spike in stock market volatility indicates that a full-fledged trade war between the US and China may be getting under way. The US is now expected to announce further tariffs on $50 to $60 billion in Chinese imports, to which the Chinese have already promised a response in the “same proportion.” Brian and John continue their conversation from yesterday with Jude Woodward, the London mayor Ken Livingstone's advisor on culture and creative industries and the author of the new book “The US vs China: Asia's new Cold War?”
Deadspin published a video on Twitter over the weekend that demonstrated the growing monolithic hold that Sinclair Broadcasting Group exerts on local TV news stations across the country. The video shows dozens of anchors reading the same script, mandated by Sinclair to be read on air, which lambasts “biased and false news.” Media watchdogs are concerned with Sinclair’s record of conservative bias and how its editorial content seems to be in-line with the talking points of the Trump White House. If Sinclair completes its acquisition of Tribune Media, it could reach 72% of U.S. households and could push even more “must air” scripts on its audience, giving them less coverage of local news and local politics. Pam Vogel, a research fellow at Media Matters, talks about Sinclair’s effect on local news and the difficulty in regulating the ambitious media behemoth. President Trump said he wants the military to guard the Mexican border until his border wall is in place. Michael and Rick examine what might be motivating the president’s heightened rhetoric on immigration and border security. Is he trying to act tough for the base, giving Republicans talking points for a tough election cycle or something else entirely?
Business titan and media icon, Barry Baker, joins The Brink of Midnight Podcast. Barry Baker has played an instrumental part in pioneering nearly every facet of media and entertainment, and has collaborated with the likes of Rupert Murdoch, Bob Eiger, Barry Diller, and more. This episode is like having a front row seat in a master class for entrepreneurship and we chronicle Barry's rise from radio to TV, to cable networks and the rise of HBO, to dot.coms and new media models. You may know Barry best from running Sinclair Broadcasting Group (193 TV stations, 612 channels, 89 US markets) or USA Interactive (at the time: USA Network, Sci Fi Channel, HSN, Ticketmaster, USA Studios, Dick Wolf Productions - Law & Order, The Jerry Springer Show, The Sally Jesse Raphael Show, The Maury Povich Show, Citysearch, Hotels.com, Match.com). Becoming a force in media wasn't easy or without risk and Barry shares his most pivotal moments, all which depended on living outside his comfort zone. Barry is a fighter and winner in every aspect of his life. He knows a thing or two about rises and falls, dramatic turns, and most of all comebacks - he's had over a whopping 700 procedures on his throat and vocal chords after surviving throat cancer. His collaborators and circle of friends includes some of the most powerful people in politics, business, sports, and entertainment and he is a true believer that rising tides raise all ships. That approach to life is evident in how Barry interacts with absolutely everyone he meets and how he continues to be fascinated by learning about new markets, research, and breakthroughs across entertainment, technology, medicine, and health care. What's so striking about Barry, is that despite all that he's achieved, he's still that same hungry kid who was hustling and building businesses at the age of 14. He hit the ground running - literally - for the subway in his tough Bronx childhood neighborhood and he hasn't stopped yet.
