Most bands toil for years honing their sound, locking down their lineup, playing gigs around their hometown and then regionally before hitting it big. Though the predecessor to Boston, Mother's Milk, did play gigs in Massachusetts, the visionary on the sound that would become Boston's trademark was Tom Scholz. Tom was not your typical rock star in that he had a master's degree from MIT and was working as an engineer at Polaroid while strategizing on his musical career. He wanted to combine the melodies of the classical music he grew up on with the rock music of the 70s that he loved. He wanted crunching guitars against clear vocals and when he found Brad Delp, he had the voice that make his music soar. Instead of toiling after hours at a studio, Scholz acquired and engineered a 12 track recording unit and figured out how to the get the sound he wanted. When signed by CBS, they wanted to re-record the songs at a fancy studio but industry vet John Boylan basically ran interference with the suits so Scholz could perfect his songs and transfer the demos to the master tapes (and he got their name changed to Boston). The result sold 17 million copies in the US and was the biggest selling debut for a rock album until Appetite for Destruction by Guns N Roses. While some of the songs actually charted, all of them became classic rock radio staples. Anyone who grew up on rock radio heard More Than a Feeling, Smokin', Rock & Roll Band, Peace of Mind and Let Me Take You Home Tonight (the only track written by Brad Delp solo) hundreds of times. Foreplay/Longtime were split as different sides of the single but together offer a bit of progginess to the bands repertoire. Though Tom Scholz is educated, his lyrics are themes that most people can relate to - choosing your passion or going corporate, trying to find woman, fantasizing about your future, and taking risks that may or may not pay off. Those guitar hooks and strong vocals make for some AOR platinum. Say what you want about the band or their sound but this first album struck a chord all over America and still sounds big a bold to this day. We are back this week with another two hours of blues, proudly presented alongside our friends at the Crawdaddy Club Richmond. We have got tracks from the fantastic artists performing at their upcoming live dates. The regular features, The Song Remains the Same and The Title Track Tango, are all present and correct, and Ian McHugh is behind the mic, just as you'd expect! The playlist this week is an absolute triumph. We are setting off with the living legend Buddy Guy, followed by West London's own The Guv'nors, the deep vocals of Oscar Wilson, and Mississippi MacDonald and the Cottonmouth Kings. We are keeping the energy right where it needs to be with Smokin' Joe Kubek's take on Cross Cut Saw, The Johnny Max Band, the funk soul of Trombone Shorty, and the incredible harmonica work of Giles Robson. The standard stays high as we bring you the brilliant young musician Connor Selby, the Master of the Telecaster Albert Collins, Mighty Mike Schermer, and the blistering slide guitar of Joanna Connor. We also have firm show favourites The Mustangs, slide master Roy Rogers, the soulful Al Corte, and the beautiful, expressive fretwork of Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters. Rounding off the show we clear the way for Roomful of Blues, the classic jump-blues energy of The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Big Steam, and the Backtrack Blues Band. Most bands toil for years honing their sound, locking down their lineup, playing gigs around their hometown and then regionally before hitting it big. Though the predecessor to Boston, Mother's Milk, did play gigs in Massachusetts, the visionary on the sound that would become Boston's trademark was Tom Scholz. Tom was not your typical rock star in that he had a master's degree from MIT and was working as an engineer at Polaroid while strategizing on his musical career. He wanted to combine the melodies of the classical music he grew up on with the rock music of the 70s that he loved. He wanted crunching guitars against clear vocals and when he found Brad Delp, he had the voice that make his music soar. Instead of toiling after hours at a studio, Scholz acquired and engineered a 12 track recording unit and figured out how to the get the sound he wanted. When signed by CBS, they wanted to re-record the songs at a fancy studio but industry vet John Boylan basically ran interference with the suits so Scholz could perfect his songs and transfer the demos to the master tapes (and he got their name changed to Boston). The result sold 17 million copies in the US and was the biggest selling debut for a rock album until Appetite for Destruction by Guns N Roses. While some of the songs actually charted, all of them became classic rock radio staples. Anyone who grew up on rock radio heard More Than a Feeling, Smokin', Rock & Roll Band, Peace of Mind and Let Me Take You Home Tonight (the only track written by Brad Delp solo) hundreds of times. Foreplay/Longtime were split as different sides of the single but together offer a bit of progginess to the bands repertoire. Though Tom Scholz is educated, his lyrics are themes that most people can relate to - choosing your passion or going corporate, trying to find woman, fantasizing about your future, and taking risks that may or may not pay off. Those guitar hooks and strong vocals make for some AOR platinum. Say what you want about the band or their sound but this first album struck a chord all over America and still sounds big a bold to this day. Bowie Kuhn landed on the cover of the June 28, 1976 issue of Sports Illustrated because he had just done something nobody in baseball had done quite so boldly — voided three of the biggest player sales in the history of the sport. When Charlie Finley sold Vida Blue to the Yankees and Joe Rudi and Rollie Fingers to the Red Sox all in a single afternoon, Kuhn stepped in and nullified every transaction, invoking his power to act in baseball's "best interests." Finley called him the village idiot, Billy Martin joked about pitching him, and the entire baseball world stopped to ask one question — just how much power does a commissioner actually have? That was enough to put Bowie Kuhn on the cover of Sports Illustrated. That same week two other seismic sports stories were playing out inside that June 28th issue. In boxing, George Foreman demolished Joe Frazier in five rounds, knocking him down twice before the referee stopped it — and Smokin' Joe announced his retirement on the spot with a perfect line: "It's time to put it on the wall and go boogie, boogie, boogie." And in basketball, after years of financial chaos and a 44-minute vote, the ABA officially ceased to exist — four franchises surviving into the NBA while the rest quietly disappeared, ending a nine-year experiment that gave the world Julius Erving, the three-point line, and a red, white and blue ball nobody took seriously until it was too late. Swen Nater's journey is one of the most unlikely in sports history. He grew up in the Netherlands, never played a high school game, and arrived at UCLA with almost no formal experience — spending two seasons as Bill Walton's practice player on back-to-back undefeated championship teams without ever starting. Yet the Milwaukee Bucks drafted him in the first round in 1973, making him the only player ever drafted that high without a college start. He chose the ABA instead, and after the Virginia Squires sold him off he landed with San Antonio and won ABA Rookie of the Year. When the merger came, Nater transitioned seamlessly, eventually becoming the only player in history to lead both the ABA and NBA in rebounding. Swen tells us what it was like to backup Walton, how Kareem kept him from signing with Milwaukee, and how Wilt Chamberlain taught him to become a ferocious rebounder. He tells us how John Wooden prepared him for the pros, how Don Nelson made him a better shooter, and the story of the time he and Lonnie Shelton got into it — and his wife's 80-year-old grandmother came onto the court to give him some assistance. Varsha Gohil's 23 year case against her ex-husband changed the law for anyone whose spouse hides their wealth in divorce proceedings. It is thought to be the one of the longest-running financial disputes in English family law. Varsha tells Anita Rani about a two-decade battle that included gaining a law degree and representing herself in court. For three decades, the singer-songwriter, Beth Orton has remained one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary music. She's developed a devoted audience, winning a BRIT Award and Mercury Prize nominations for albums such as Trailer Park and Central Reservation. She has collaborated with artists such as The Chemical Brothers, Andrew Weatherall and Nick Cave, and she's performed at venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Sydney Opera House, Glastonbury Festival and Carnegie Hall. Her 2022 album, Weather Alive, became a major critical breakthrough. Her first self-produced album, it earned widespread acclaim, with The New York Times praising its “modal vocal phrases". Beth joins Anita to discuss her new album The Ground Above, and to perform live.DJ Smokin Jo has been a trailblazer in an industry largely dominated by men. A resident at the legendary Trade parties in London in the early 90s she was soon playing the world's biggest clubs and was the first - and still only - woman to be named DJ Magazine's DJ of the year. Jo joins Anita to discuss her memoir which details the highs and lows of her career, from finding her community on the dancefloor to rehab, misogyny and what has and hasn't changed for women in dance music.
