Secession Podcast: Artists is a series of conversations featuring artists exhibiting at the Secession. This episode is a conversation between the artist Mykola Ridnyi and the board member and artist Anna Witt. It was recorded on September 15, 2023 in the context of the exhibition: Mykola Ridnyi 15.9. – 12.11.2023 Mykola Ridnyi's generation of Ukrainians grew up in a climate of increasing orientation toward the West and the European Union. This emancipation from Russia found expression in the 2004 Orange Revolution and was defended in the Euromaidan events of 2013–14. It was a process that went hand in hand with the emergence of a confident Ukrainian arts scene, among whose leading exponents Ridnyi ranks. Long before graduating from the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts in 2008, he was instrumental to the formation of a politically active arts scene, both as an artist in his own right and as a curator and author. He was a founding member of the art collective SOSka, whose SOSka gallery-lab, an artist-run space that existed from 2005 until 2012, was a key contribution to the local artistic infrastructure. Ridnyi's curatorial project Armed and Dangerous (2017–2021) prompted him to begin developing a platform for collaborations between Ukrainian moving-image artists and filmmakers. In 2022–23, he curated several Ukrainian film and video art screening programs at DAAD-Galerie, Berlin; MAXXI, Rome; Museum Folkwang, Essen; and the National Gallery, Sofia. More Anna Witt, born in Germany in 1981, lives and works in Vienna and Berlin. Her artistic practice is performative, participatory, and political. She creates situations that reflect interpersonal relationships and power structures as well as conventions of speaking and acting. Her work has been shown at the SEMA Seoul Museum of Art; the Secession, Vienna; the 1st Vienna Biennale at MAK; the Gallery of Contemporary Art Leipzig; Museum Ludwig, Cologne; the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York; Kunstmuseum Bern; and the MOCA Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, among others, and she has had solo exhibitions at Museum Belvedere 21 Contemporary, Vienna; Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, and Gallery Tanja Wagner, Berlin, at Marabouparken konsthall, Stockholm and Stacion—Center for Contemporary Art, Prishtina, Kosovo. She took part in Aichi Triennial in 2019 and 2013; the Lux/ICA Biennial of Moving Images, London; the 6th Berlin Biennale of Contemporary Art, and Manifesta 7 in northern Italy, and is the winner of the Outstanding Artist Award of the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport (2020), the Otto Mauer Prize (2018), the Art Prize ‘Future of Europe' (2015), the BC21 Art Award (2013), and the Art Prize of the Columbus Art Foundation (2008). On this episode of Talking Terror, the boys go back to the 90's by way of 2017. The Ghoul of Geek Keith has chosen "Super Dark Times" directed by Kevin Phillips to discuss! It's a film that has been compared to such off beat films like Donnie Darko and River's Edge. While this is not your typical horror film, the Talking Terror crew will have plenty to discuss as the super dark elements of Super Dark Times definitely have a horrific edge. Break out the flannel, ripped jeans, and general 90's malaise as they discuss the film that many consider suspenseful, thrilling, and super dark! Also, sound the alarm as we have Halloween 2018 bits to discuss! Will instagram and social media be a negative tool for this film? February marks the Soska twins "Women in Horror Month" and Talking Terror is officially in the Press Pool for all the fun! The King of Horror will talk about that as well as a new program called "Fear Haus" hosted by the one and only Horror Hostess; Blair Bathory and so much more so tune in! It's going to be a super fun ride!

Hey there friends. It's time once again for our annual Crypticon episode. We went to the largest gathering of the macabre in the Pacific Northwest this weekend and we break down all the sights, sounds, and smells from the event. We, unfortunately, didn't get around to doing interviews this time, but luckily it's because the event was so crowded. It's great to see more people supporting the genre and we'll take that over talking to some celebrities any day. With that said, we tell you about some of the panels we saw, including the best movies of 2014, immortality as a plot device, Twin Peaks (featuring Sheryl Lee and Sherilynn Fenn), the Soska sisters, and Ken Foree. Crypticon is always a great event and if you get the chance to go next year, you definitely should. And come find us and say hi!

Hello again and welcome back to another episode of The Grave Plot podcast! We kick things off today with a new Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde series that will feature action, adventure, and superheroes. I wish that was a joke. We go on to discuss just what the new Friday the 13th movie is (although we're still not sure), as well as the Dark Tower movie/TV show combo. From there, we discuss how and why a found footage movie would be 3D, why The Crow reboot is constantly fighting for its life, and the latest addition to the Universal monsters team. We also talk about the new horror movie coming from Spike Lee - yes, that Spike Lee - plus the sequel to a personal favorite of ours, Contracted. We, once again, bring hell down upon AMC and The Walking Dead for their spoiling of the mid-season finale, as well as casting news on that show's spin-off series. To close out Horror Business, we discuss some casting news, namely The Last of Us and the Lifetime series based on The Omen. Our two movie reviews feature a pair of sequels. We kick things off with the WWE Films production of See No Evil 2, directed by the Soska twins and starring "The Big Red Monster," Kane. Jacob Goodnight is back and he's once again picking off all the pretty people. Our second review features some hardcore zombie-on-zombie action as the undead third reich returns in Dead Snow 2: Red vs Dead. So open your ears and let us in to your brains!

Welcome once again to Octoberama! For week three of this big event, we present you with the week of the werewolf. As such, we present you with two werewolf movies, namely Skinwalkers and Dog Soldiers. While vastly different, the two movies are also very similar in that they both feature lycanthropic monsters. We give our take on both and give them a rating. Before we can get to that, however, we have to take care of Horror Business. We start off with some real world horror, including a true-to-life Hannibal Lectar as well as the discovery of Draula's dungeon. We then move on to the world of fiction, but stick with Dracula as we discuss how Dracula Untold is going to be the springboard for a whole new Universal Monsters world. We close out the vampire section with a discussion about a remake of I Am Legend. We then move to discuss zombies, including The Walking Dead, the new Uwe Boll picture Anger of the Dead, the sequel to Zombieland, and updates on the movie adaptation of Dead Rising. We then discuss the future for the Soska twins, as well as the iOS game The Drowning. We move on to the return of the Twin Peaks, as well as updates on Amityville: The Awakening, The Purge becoming a trilogy, The Green Inferno, and Cannibal Holocaust. We close out with a ton of updates about the new Ghostbusters movie. So enjoy the new episode, and pray there's not a full moon. Aoooooooo!

Hello boils and ghouls! Yep, that's right, we used the trademark phrase used by The Crypt Keeper. The reason? We went to Crypticon Seattle last weekend and we got to meet and interview the man behind the corpse, John Kassir (pictured). We also got a chance to spend a few minutes with the Soska twins, Jen and Sylvia, the writers and directors of American Mary and the upcoming See No Evil 2. It was fantastic getting to speak to all three of them, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did. You can check out our photos from the event on our Facebook. In lieu of Horror Business, we also got a chance to check out some panels while we there, including "The Best Horror Movies of 2013" and "Scary Sexy Time," a panel about who you would bang from the horror genre. It was... interesting. We also finally got a chance to see the independant film Truth or Dare, and give you our review of it. We also got a chance to take part in a Q&A session with the movie's writer/director Jessica Cameron, who was joined by Tristan Risk from American Mary and the short film Call Girl, which was also screened. All in all, we had a great time at the convention and hopefully you have a great time listening to it. Enjoy.

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. A number of things are interesting about Jen and Sylvia Soska, or simply better known as the Soska sisters. First, they are twins. Second, they are from Canada. Third, they are sibling film makers. Fourth, they are female in a male dominated industry. Fifth, they are genre film makers. And finally after a festival circuit run, their second feature length film, American Mary, has been released to the mass audience. Getting their start in the pseudo-retro-grindhouse wave with their first film, Dead Hooker in a Trunk, the sisters come back with a dark tale of a woman who has many issues of any early twenty-something. Mary's a med student who happens to live day to day trying to pay for her living expenses never mind the horrendous amount of money colleges sap from middle class families. As her resources dry up, she ends up in a place that she never expected. Part horror film, part character study, American Mary is an interesting movie that shows the talent of these two director/screenwriting sisters. The film stars Katherine Isabelle (from Gingersnaps) as Mary, a brooding, sardonic, and somewhat disheartened individual facing real life pressures who lands up both as a victim in one set of circumstances while being a dark menacing character in other circumstances. Dark Discussions discusses this highly anticipated horror film and how it stands up to all of the hype. “Twisted Twins” Jen and Sylvia Soska are back with their stunning follow-up to the indie hit DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK. Eli Roth and Clive Barker are huge fans of the Canadian twins, who are the "Next Big Thing in Horror."AMERICAN MARY is the story of a medical student named Mary who grows broke and disenchanted with medical school and the established doctors she once idolized. The allure of easy money sends a desperate Mary through the messy world of underground surgeries, which leaves more marks on her than the so-called freakish clientele. Appearances are everything. AMERICAN MARY is available on VOD and will be in theaters on May 31st. The Soska sisters have always loved film. Since childhood, they have been heavily involved in acting, with a special place in their twisted little hearts for horror. They trained in martial arts, and attended a film school that included an intensive stunt program. For one of their final film projects, they prepared to do a short film only to have their funding for the project pulled. Undeterred, they went ahead with the project on their own assembling cast and crew, doing production on their own time, and paying for it out of their own pockets. They decided to make their short film a fake trailer, in the trend of Rodriguez and Tarantino's GRINDHOUSE, which, at the time, was in theaters. The school had a list of things too inappropriate to be included and they made sure to include everything on that list and then some. The title of that trailer was DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, which went on to become their debut film - they wrote, directed, produced, starred in, and performed the stunts.

By the sheer excitement of audience members and continued partnership with donation recipient Lil Filmmakers, Ashlee's already planning on a bigger platform next year with more films and a Q&A panel that will include co-host Hannah as well as Philadelphia horror mavens Jenny Dreadful and Samm Deighan. La Petite Morgue's Kellie posted a brief recap of the organization's event, Bloody Gore-geous Monologues and shared some next steps for the budding organization. Jovana Dimitrijevic's triumphant quest to pay homage to women horror artists in Serbia, Girls Can Do Horror spanned over the stretch of 10 days as a multimedia showcase of the work and insight these artists are contributing to the horror community. Jovana also had a film screening event on March 8th in Postdam, Berlin Germany. Details can be found on the Facebook page where Jovana continues to share amazing art by talented women!
