Today we dive into the strange death of Dr. Mary Sherman and all the anomalies surrounding the case. We also talk about maybe the weirdest dude of all time David Ferrie and his relationship to the JFK whack and try to begin unpacking what his relationship to Mary Sherman may have entailed. Lastly, we take a look at Dr. Alton Ochsner the right-wing nut job who was the surgeon of Clint Murchison and Latin American dictators and in his spare time helped create an anti-communist propaganda campaign across Latin America. We look into his connections with those who may have been involved in the plot against Kennedy and begin to ask what all of this could possibly mean. In 2002, Winston Churchill was voted the greatest Briton who ever lived, beating Darwin, Shakespeare and Elizabeth I to take the top spot. Just 18 years later, a statue of the former British Prime Minister was defaced in London, spray painted with the words “Churchill was a racist”. As the west reckons with the misdeeds of history's heroes, Winston Churchill's long-time critics are eager to shine a spotlight on his dark past. To them, he was a racist, imperialist warmonger whose bombastic speeches during World War II have overshadowed the atrocities he oversaw during his decades in government: from using excessive force to crush dissent at home, to carpet bombing German cities during the war, to his role in the 1943 Bengal famine that killed 3 million Indians, his disregard for the suffering of others and penchant for violence has left a dangerous legacy. An advocate for British colonial rule, a well-known racist, and an admirer of Mussolini did not deserve praise when he was alive, and he certainly does not now. Churchill's supporters, meanwhile, regard him as a wartime hero whose bravery and leadership during Britain's darkest hour saved the country and western civilization. Churchill's powerful rhetoric inspired his countrymen to fight the Nazis when the rest of Europe had surrendered to Hitler's army. Domestically, he reformed Britain's prison system, introduced a minimum wage and improved social welfare systems. Like every hero in history, they argue, Churchill made mistakes. But his extraordinary leadership helped save western democracy, proving himself to be worthy of every accolade, every statue, and every memorial dedicated in his memory. Arguing for the motion is Geoffrey Wheatcroft, author Churchill's Shadow: An Astonishing Life and a Dangerous Legacy Arguing against the motion is Michael F. Bishop, writer, historian, and the former Executive Director of the International Churchill Society. In September 2021, Professor of Ethics, Dr Julie Ponesse, got fired because she refused to take the COVID-19 vaccine. This shocking experience has made her reflect on how far academia is from its original mission of being a safe place for exchanging ideas. Ponesse is observing a culture of conformity, groupthink, and intolerance of anyone who does not conform to the group. This situation is also raising important questions about the right of a group to rule over the few in a democracy and what our “social contract” is all about. Ponesse fears our current society where individual rights are being eradicated, and people are being coerced to take the vaccine because of a virus that kills 0,05% of those who get it – and even less for children. Dr. Kristen McQuinn is an Assistant Prof. of Physics and Astronomy at Rutgers University. In this episode, Dr. McQuinn and I chat about her non-traditional path to Astrophysics, her experience in graduate school as a mother of two young children, her insights on some experiences along the way, and her advice for aspiring students.Dr. McQuinn earned her undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at Lehigh University. After working in the industry for 9 years, she applied for graduate school and completed her PhD in Astrophysics at the University of Minnesota in 2010. She stayed as a postdoc at UMN for 5 years and then worked as a Research Scientist at University of Texas at Austin before joining her current role.Dr. McQuinn's science interests are focused on the formation and history of low-mass galaxies, predominantly in the nearby Universe, and what such galaxies can tell us about the history of the universe. Specifically, she is interested in using low-mass galaxies to probe different epochs of the cosmic time (including the earliest epochs of evolution) and to study individual processes, such as the formation of stars, the evolution of chemical elements, and the impact of star formation on the gas and structure of a galaxy.I hope that you will enjoy listening to this episode! On Alabama's election night of 2002, it looked like Democratic governor Don Siegelman had won a second term by a razor-thin margin. Until he didn't. Thanks to a voting machine computer glitch in a single county, the election results were suddenly reversed. What really happened on the night of one of the most controversial elections in Alabama history? Patrick Winegar breaks down this conspiracy that might have actually happened. In comparison to most plants, cyanobacteria are simple and easy to work with—after all, they can be grown in glass tubes. However, there is a lot that is still unknown about them, and as such, they're the focus of a great deal of research. Dr. Ben Long received his PhD in plant biology from La Trobe University in Australia where he spent time as an undergraduate and post-doctoral student studying cyanobacteria and trying to identify all the compounds they produce. In particular, he's looking at the type and quantity of toxins and other bioactive compounds they produce and what can be learned about these compounds. For example, just within the last several years, cyanobacteria have been shown to produce an amino acid that may play a role in neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Long brings a wealth of interesting information to the conversation on today's podcast, detailing cyanobacteria biochemical reactions previously thought to be nonexistent, discussing the difference between the way plants and cyanobacteria fix carbon dioxide in the environment, mysterious toxins called microcystins produced by cyanobacteria, the photosynthetic efficiency of C4 plants, and the application of cyanobacteria compounds in bioreactor work, such as the ability to produce oils from them that could be used as a form of fuel.
