In a shocking development, Letcher County Sheriff Shawn Stines has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder for the killing of District Judge Kevin Mullins inside the Letcher County Courthouse on Thursday. The incident has sent ripples through the small Appalachian community of Whitesburg, home to approximately 1,700 residents. The tragic event unfolded after an argument between Sheriff Stines, 43, and Judge Mullins, 54, just before 3 p.m. local time. According to Kentucky State Police, Mullins was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene. Sheriff Stines surrendered without incident following the shooting. Kentucky State Police Trooper Matt Gayheart addressed the community, stating that the killing is an “isolated incident” with no ongoing threat to the public. “Any time a situation like this takes place, especially in a small town, it shakes the very foundation of what the town is and this is no different,” Gayheart told local outlet WJHL. The Kentucky Attorney General's office, led by Russell Coleman, along with Commonwealth's Attorney Jackie Steele for the 27th Judicial Circuit, are spearheading the investigation. Coleman emphasized the commitment to justice, stating on social media, “We will fully investigate and pursue justice.” Governor Andy Beshear also responded to the tragedy, posting on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Sadly, I have been informed that a district judge in Letcher County was shot and killed in his chambers this afternoon. There is far too much violence in this world, and I pray there is a path to a better tomorrow.” The community's reaction has been one of profound sadness and disbelief. Lead county prosecutor Matt Butler recused himself from the case due to personal ties with Judge Mullins. “We all know each other here. ... Anyone from Letcher County would tell you that Judge Mullins and I married sisters and that we have children who are first cousins but act like siblings,” Butler explained. “For that reason, among others, I have already taken steps to recuse myself and my entire office.” Laurance B. VanMeter, Chief Justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court, expressed his shock and sorrow, stating, “I am shocked by this act of violence and the court system is shaken by this news.” In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, several local schools were placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure. The temporary closure of the Letcher County Courthouse has added to the community's distress, disrupting the daily lives of its residents. Judge Kevin Mullins was a respected figure in Letcher County, appointed by former Governor Steve Beshear in 2009 and elected the following year. He was renowned for his dedication to supporting individuals in the justice system struggling with substance abuse. Mullins played a pivotal role in developing programs like Addiction Recovery Care, which offers peer support services in the courthouse and has been adopted in over 50 counties across Kentucky. Mullins was also a founding member of the Responsive Effort to Support Treatment in Opioid Recovery Efforts Leadership Team, further highlighting his commitment to community welfare and rehabilitation. As the investigation continues, questions remain about the motives behind the altercation that led to the judge's untimely death. Kentucky State Police are diligently working to uncover all the facts surrounding the case. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In today's News: Planned Parenthood removed from Texas Medicaid The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled yesterday that Texas can remove Planned Parenthood facilities from the state’s Medicaid program. Texas moved forward with cutting Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood in 2016 after the Center for Medical Progress released undercover videos showing Planned Parenthood staff appearing to participate in the illegal trafficking of aborted fetal body parts. After a years-long court battle, the 5th Circuit has overruled a lower court ruling and has sided with the state of Texas. The case may be headed to the Supreme Court. Protection for female athletes The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit received friend-of-the-court briefs this week from female athletes, medical professionals, feminist groups, the United States and 14 states that all support Idaho’s “Fairness In Women’s Sports Act” and are asking the court to reverse a district court order that temporarily halted enforcement of the law. The district court’s hold on the law means female athletes must compete against males who identify as female while the lawsuit proceeds. Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys, representing two collegiate athletes who run track and cross-country at Idaho State University in Pocatello, are defending the law alongside the state of Idaho on appeal to the 9th circuit and filed their opening brief on Nov. 12. Move to reopen religious schools A religious liberty law firm and the Kentucky Attorney General have filed a lawsuit against Gov. Andy Breshear asking a court to block the implementation of his executive order banning religious schools from holding in-person learning. First Liberty Institute filed the lawsuit on behalf of Danville Christian Academy in the Eastern District of Kentucky Friday. Attorney general Daniel Cameron joined the lawsuit as a plaintiff. Citing a “potentially catastrophic surge in covid-19 cases,” Breshear issued an executive order Wednesday, which mandated all public and private elementary, middle and high schools to “cease in-person instruction and transition to remote or virtual instruction” beginning yesterday. Governor urged to veto abortion amendment Massachusetts pro-life leaders are urging people to call Gov. Charlie Baker and ask him to veto legislation that would legalize the killing of unborn babies up to birth. The pro-abortion amendment to the state budget passed the Massachusetts House and the Senate earlier this month. Among other things, it would expand late-term abortions, weaken protections from infanticide and allow young girls to abort their unborn babies without their parents’ knowledge or consent. Michael king of the Massachusetts family institute told One News Now that Baker can line-item veto the amendment and stop the radical pro-abortion expansion in their state.

Denise Arthur talks about how the extreme Democrats and press are attacking Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, a man who happens to be black, for doing his job. What they are saying is horrible, and if he were not a Republican, this would not be happening. Even worse, the “story” the press has told about the incident is not true to begin with.

RadioPublic|LibSyn|YouTube|Patreon|Square Cash (Share code: Send $5, get $5!) Well, surprise, surprise, surprise! Kimberly Guilfoyle displays her genitalia (and other’s) to folks around the office, Melania Trump declares war on Christmas, (and kids), and... well, neither of those stories really merited discussion on Friday’s KITM. Today, the story is the October surprise that can not be a surprise to anyone: Donald and Melania Trump have finally tested positive for Covid-19. (Purportedly). Donald Trump seems to have let his hydroxychloroquine prescription lapse and now he has a case of the Trump virus. David Waldman is joined by surprise Friday guest Greg Dworkin, and historian/author Ian Reifowitz (Surprise your friends and relatives! Buy them each a copy of The Tribalization of Politics: How Rush Limbaugh's Race-Baiting Rhetoric on the Obama Presidency Paved the Way for Trump) to discuss events as they were reported today. Should Joe Biden, whose caution and wisdom has so far kept him safe, suspend his campaign because Donald Trump is an idiot? Trump wouldn’t have done it for him. When it was just Hope Hicks, the White House wasn’t about to tell anyone. Of course, it was never “just Hope Hicks”. There were a million before her, led by Infector in Chief, Donald Trump. Trump’s Dr. Nick Riviera assures us that Donald will have this thing licked before tee time, but what about the puny weaklings he breathed upon, including jurist in waiting, Amy Barrett? Amazon says over 19,000 of its workers tested positive for COVID-19, and tells us that’s good news. The real good news: Barron is still OK. Just in case, however… You never know, there might still be an election. The one thing we don’t need is Republican tax cuts. Don’t let all this sweep away the news that Breonna Taylor grand jury only indicted police on wanton endangerment, because that was the only charge submitted to them by the Kentucky Attorney General. Darwin H.M., @Darwin_Darko on Twitter, reports that the House will vote on a bipartisan bill named after slain Fort Hood soldier Vanessa Guillén, that is designed to help victims report sexual assault and sexual harassment in the military. Darwin reviews the history of the Vanessa Guillen Murder which gave impetus to the bill.
It's all about justice this week. First, we talk about the miscarriage of justice that was the lack of indictment in Breonna Taylor's murder, announced by the Kentucky Attorney General and Miss DJT's new favorite coon. Then we discuss THAT debate. From Miss DJT dog walking Fox News's Chris Wallace, to his s*** throwing at...everyone, we decide whether Biden came out unscathed and his performance did his campaign justice.
In this episode of By Any Means Necessary, hosts Sean Blackmon and Jacquie Luqman are joined by Dan Kovalik, a lawyer, professor, and author of “No More War: How the West Violates International Law by Using ‘Humanitarian Intervention' to Advance Economic and Strategic Interests," to talk about last night's debate between President Donald Trump and Senator Joe Biden, and why it's unsurprising a clear majority of Americans polled afterwards viewed the event in a negative light. In the second segment, Sean and Jacquie are joined by Jennifer, an organizer with OccupyPHA, and Kane, Camp JTD resident and organizer, to talk about the recent agreement between the city of Philadelphia and organizers there to give control of around 50 properties to a community land trust, and the long struggle by homeless activists and advocates which led the way for the historic deal.In the third segment, Sean and Jacquie are joined by Ollie Vargas, writer and journalist with Radio Kawsachun Coca, to discuss the resignation of three Bolivian government ministers, the recent appointment of Branko Marinkovic to Economy Minister, and why Bolivians across the world are speaking out after being disenfranchised by the coup-borne Bolivian regime.Later in the show, Sean and Jacquie are joined by Netfa Freeman, a policy analyst with the Institute for Policy Studies and a member of the coordinating committee of the Black Alliance for Peace, to discuss the presidential debate, President Trump's suggestion that the Proud Boys should "stand down and stand by," and the refusal of Kentucky Attorney General to indict the Louisville police who killed Breonna Taylor.

Centuries from now, historians and scholars around the world will look back on this precise point in history and say, “Christ, what an asshole.” Unfortunately, we live in the present. Fortunately, we can share this moment with this David Waldman and Greg Dworkin. This week, some journalists will attempt to both-sides, and pundits will attempt to grade on a curve, but the reality is Trump was losing going into the debate, and losing worse coming out of it, and the people that matter understand this. But, how much do “undecided” voters matter? Forced by facts further into denial, shy Trump voters become shier. Racists, on the other hand, locked, loaded… and are standing by. After all that, there’s still a pandemic going on. Virginia’s Ralph and Pamela Northam already lost the debate. Missouri Governor Mike Parson and his wife, Teresa did too, but but had hoped to sneak behind the virus’ back over to their annual fall festival. Introduction We have not seen anything close to the truth with the vast majority of the Breonna Taylor agenda-driven images, soundbites and analyses that wash over us multiple times a day. Truth is the most marginalized voice of all. The vast majority of us want true justice, and a permanent, united peace. In order to know that peace, we need to have the facts--all the facts and nothing but the facts--facts will lead us to the truth. Only the truth can lead us to true justice. That is the subject of today’s 10-minute episode. Continuing How many of us have been told that Breonna Taylor was murdered in her bed while sleeping? And then told that a systemically racist police force could do that to any random Black person at any time? That is a lie, intentionally designed to increase the fear and anger among Blacks, and anybody who believes that lie, toward the police specifically and White society in general. And people understandably believe that lie because they want to trust their news sources. Destruction, more deaths and a further divided and angry country are the inevitable and desired result. Let’s look at what really happened. The No-Knock Warrant. When the police applied for a warrant to search Taylor's apartment, they also asked for four other warrants to be served near simultaneously: one for a suspected "trap house" allegedly operated by Jamarcus Glover and Adrian Walker (no relation to Kenneth Walker) at 2424 Elliott Avenue, two for vacant homes near that address, and one for a suspected stash house on West Muhammad Ali Boulevard. Judge Mary Shaw approved all five warrants. There was sufficient evidence connecting Taylor to her previous boyfriend, Jamarcus Glover, to issue the warrant for Taylor's address. Drugs were found when the separate warrant was served on Glover, and he was arrested that same night. The police decided before the raid to serve the No-Knock Warrant at Taylor’s address as a Knock Warrant. Evidence presented to the Grand Jury showed the police knocked and announced who they were more than once before entering. Video shows that Officer Brett Hankison was agitated before they used a battering ram on the door to enter. A fellow Officer was trying to calm Hankison down even before they entered. Getting no response to their knocking and announcing, the three officers, Hankison along with Sergeant Jonathan Mattingly and Detective Myles Cosgrove, entered Taylor’s apartment following the use of the battering ram. Breonna and her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, had left their bedroom, and entered the hallway. Walker said that he had not heard any knocking or announcing, and fired his legal gun at what he thought was an intruder, striking Detective Mattingly in the leg. Mattingly and Cosgrove returned fire, killing Taylor who was standing near Walker. Analysis showed that Cosgrove had fired the shot that killed Ms. Taylor. The agitated Officer Hankison fired 10 shots which entered nearby apartments. Hankison was correctly charged by the Grand Jury with three counts of wanton endangerment, each carrying a sentence of up to 5 years. Officer Hankison was fired last June, and Mattingly and Cosgrove have been on administrative duties. Mattingly and Cosgrove were, also correctly, not charged for returning fire. Kentucky Attorney General, David Cameron (photo), went to some length to tell everyone the Grand Jury had done its job well, and pleaded for people, especially celebrities, not to stir up negative reactions with misleading information. But much of the media are filled with people reacting to just that--deliberately false information. That is not only wrong, but downright dangerous. Think of how many people actually believe that the cops simply barged into Ms. Taylor’s apartment, opened fire, and killed her in her bed. Lies like this one tear at the fabric of an already torn society, add fuel to the race fires, and influence elections. “Skinfolk, not kinfolk.
A Kentucky state police report contradicts the Kentucky Attorney General, and police bodycam footage shows officers potentially violating investigation procedures. New details are forcing more questions about power, propaganda and what justice might look like for Breonna Taylor. Errin Haines, Keisha Blain and Darcy Costello join Meghna Chakrabarti.
Over the past 48 hours we've learned so much about the Breonna Taylor case to warrant it being reopened. Today I unpack and explain all that we've learned so far. Tomorrow, after a member of the grand jury filed a suit stating that the Kentucky Attorney General misrepresented them, all of the records from the grand jury will be released. The truth is - a new grand jury needs to be formed. ---- If you listen to The Breakdown and want to help support the work we do, consider becoming a member of our Patreon at http://www.patreon.com/thebreakdown for exclusive members perks and early access to content.

This week, we took a trip back to 2016 to revisit the last pre-Trump season of “The Bachelor.”Though we got to relive some of the good, bad and cringeworthy times of Ben’s season on Monday’s Bachelor special, we wanted to continue speaking to contestants whose stories haven’t been in the spotlight. We had the pleasure of chatting with Amber James, who was on both Chris Soules’ and Ben Higgins’ seasons of The Bachelor, AND the second season of Bachelor In Paradise, as well as Jami Letain, who was on Ben’s season of The Bachelor and BIP 3. Our call to action this week: go to tinyurl.com/EmailBreonnaTaylor to email the Kentucky Attorney General & Governor demanding that the officers who killed Breonna Taylor all be fired and charged. Pat, an 81-year-old woman from Kentucky, receives a call that she has won a $7.5 million lottery prize. Pat can't believe her luck. Unaware that the call is a scam, she begins speaking with the scammers multiple times a day. Over the next seven months, they befriend Pat in an effort to convince her that she'll receive the prize money as soon as she pays taxes on her winnings. Slowly they gain Pat's trust, and she starts sending money to the scammers. Every time she thinks she has made a final payment and will receive her prize, the scammers come up with a new issue requiring her to send more money. Eventually the scammers take over $100,000 from Pat. Unfortunately, Pat's story is common among lottery-scam victims. Often by the time these scams are uncovered, victims have lost thousands of dollars, and because of the difficulties in tracking down and prosecuting scammers, most never receive restitution. However, determined to get a better outcome for citizens, the state of Kentucky has dedicated resources to fight back against scammers. Investigators in the Kentucky Attorney General's office have been working to track down and prosecute scammers, and their efforts are paying off. In the last four years the Kentucky Attorney General's office has returned $2.1 million to victims of fraud. When they hear about Pat's case they dive in, following the money, hoping to apprehend the scammers and get justice for Pat.

Retired agent Jim Huggins served in the FBI for 28 years. During his Bureau career, Huggins was assigned to the Minneapolis, Denver and Louisville Divisions, in addition to special assignments on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation during the Wounded Knee takeovers in 1973 and again in 1975 and during the RESMURS investigation of the murder of two FBI agents Jack Coler and Ron Williams. In this episode of FBI Retired Case File Review, Jim Huggins is interviewed about his investigation of FBI agent Mark Putnam, a new agent assigned to a two-man resident agency in Pikeville, Kentucky, high in Appalachian coal country. Based primarily on Huggins ability to elicit a confession, Putnam pled guilty and was convicted of strangling is his pregnant informant, Susan Daniels Smith, in a fit of rage. While assigned to the Louisville Division, Huggins also conducted or supervised many of Kentucky’s biggest corruption investigations. He served as the supervisor of the Lexington Resident Agency from 1986 until his retirement. After retiring from the FBI, Jim Huggins was appointed by the Kentucky Attorney General as Director of Investigations for the Public Corruption Unit, where he worked for seven years. Recently, Huggins was hired as a technical advisor for Above Suspicion, the feature film based on the non-fiction book of the same name that depicts the tragic saga of Mark Putnam and Susan Smith.
