If you're not defining a successful fitness business for yourself, you're going to be more and more unhappy as you grow and scale it. 00:00 If you start out working around the clock without an end in sight or boundaries, chances are, in five years you'll still be doing it. That said, you have to be willing to do the things no one else is willing to do. I've done those 14- and 16-hour days where I've barely been out of pajamas between actively creating marketing, programs, hosting webinars, and learning what I needed to do next. I've taken roles back during the pandemic to ensure the health of my business when we didn't know what was going to happen. And then I've hired and trained while doing the jobs that had to be done until others can do them. So, I'm not saying that you're going to say you want to work 5 hours a day and you can start that today and be profitable… but I'm also not going to say you can't! And neither should you! Don't Wait, Start It may be the way you have to work… if you: 03:13 Are doing this between school drop off and pick up 03:18 Work a different job as you build what you really want to do 03:21 Or … if you simply want to do this as a hobby (if you deep down want to do this and just can't believe you can make the same or more as your “real” job, we should talk: I earn in a month what I earned in a year 9 years ago… and it was nice then, so you may have some mindset around money to resolve). 04:00 Reaching the level of success you want depends on you defining it. 05:23 Two fitness pros (from two different groups or masterminds) recently shared a vision of a “successful fitness business” and so I suspect this is something that you might also need to define. What is your definition of success? Is it monetary? Is it the number of people you reach? Do you want to have a certain percent of profit margin? For me, that became very clear after 2020. The realization hit me, that if I did business very differently, and made decisions very differently, my profit margin could much more often be closer to 60%. Is your definition of a successful fitness business satisfying some itch within you that feels like you're not enough just yet? Are you proving something to someone else or to yourself? These questions beg to be answered and you may have had no idea you were going down this rabbit hole. That's what happens when you start and really put effort into a business. Your personal stuff comes up. If it's more about you then, achieving a successful fitness business doesn't necessarily mean fulfillment. And its fulfillment that brings happiness, peace, and contentedness. So, rather than you defining a successful fitness business, which might be a certain revenue per month or percent of profit margin – or doing that in a silo – you want to look at what will enhance your fulfillment. What kind of a day makes you sleep well? How would you spend days that make you excited to get up? Do you want to engage with lots of others regularly and have a team working with you? Or do you prefer to work alone and create? There are no “right” or “wrong” answers except where you may not have answered at all going deeply enough into details. Paint a picture in your answer so that anyone else can imagine the day and the feelings associated with your business. Today I sat down with Ray Sinlao, founder of Standard Conversions, a conversion rate optimization agency. Thanks to his background as a developer, Ray was able to develop in-house processes and even his own software, Buyer Tool, to help his agency surpass the six-figure mark in less than one year. He's here to talk about the innovative hiring process that helped his agency grow to 7-figures. 2 Tips to Help Your Agency Perform Strong From the Start It's not unheard of to reach the 1-million mark in under a year as an agency — but it's not exactly an everyday occurrence. So what tips does Ray have to help you find similar success? Performance-based pricing: Ray says performance-based deals helped him scale his agency at a rapid rate from the get-go. But it wasn't without a few hiccups. The key, he says, is always working with clients you trust. If there is even 1% hesitation, walk away. Hire a team early on: In the beginning, Ray was working 16-hour days and was quickly burning out. But then he realized the whole reason he started his agency was to be able to spend more time with his family and have more control over his life. When you bring in the right people to support you, you'll find you have more time to devote to the things that matter the most. How Streamlined Processes Can Help Your Team Succeed It's one thing to be able to scale an ad account. It's even better if you can scale a team to scale the ad accounts for you. But as agency owners, there's often a reluctance to give up some of the control. This is normal, but it can easily hinder growth. Once Ray decided to grow his team, he set himself up early to make sure he was bringing on the right people and that they had the tools to succeed. As a former developer, Ray started documenting processes from the beginning. This way, everything is repeatable. When a new person joins the team, they have a playbook filled with processes and a knowledge bank to help them deliver results. The more you can document what your agency does and why then the easier it will be for your new hires (and existing team) to deliver the results you expect. 5 Steps Process for Hiring the Right Agency Employees It's not unusual for agencies to experience a high level of turnover. Early on, Ray developed a process that helped him turn inexperienced media buyers into devoted, long-term employees. Selection: Ray says about 10% of people who apply to work at his agency actually make it through the end. And most of them drop out at the first step. Why? The initial application requires applicants to read a 200+ page book and write a 2,000-word copy. While Ray says the actual assignment doesn't really apply that much, it lets him know how much work someone is willing to do to get the job. Observation: Here the potential new hire gets teamed up with an experienced media buyer. They're not ready to do any work on their own, but they get to see what it takes to do the job day in and day out. Hands-on experience: Ray considers this a minimal risk step. Here the potential employee gets to do some work (uploading projects), but they don't have any account management responsibility. More independence: At this point, the new employee essentially has the job. They are given more freedom and can manage one campaign under an account manager's supervision. Full immersion: Here, the new hire finally gets to do the job they initially applied for. While some people may think this process is a little much, Ray says the people who make it to the end are the ones that stick around long-term. Your success as an agency largely comes down to the groundwork you lay at the beginning. In today's episode, Dr. Shannon teaches you the secret to finishing what you start. WARNING: This one's going to require some deeper thinking. Is it possible that the reason you haven't finished what you started is because you haven't finished your START? Today I'm going to teach you the secret to finishing what you start. What does it mean to you to “finish your START?” It means you'll become a starter AND a finisher. For some it may be easier to start, while for others it may be easier to finish. However, I think most people find themselves feeing stuck in the “I don’t know where to start” category. Start something. This has always been easy for me…but I’ve had to learn the hard way that starting simply for the sake of STARTING or running with an idea doesn’t always work real well. Perhaps you’re like me and you find it way easier to start, but… Is this working for you? For me, I got to a point in my life where I had to finally admit that STARTING wasn’t always the answer…and it simply wasn’t working. Starting without finishing will wear you out. Where’s your finish line? Done gets paid. If you don’t finish it, there’s a lack or loss of value. When you exchange that value for something of value you keep the circle of life going…the circle of value growing. If you start, but don’t finish, you won’t get results. Ideas start things. BUT… An idea doesn’t FINISH it. Inspiration will take you a long way, no doubt, and staying tapped into the true power of the inspiration will help you finish as well. HOWEVER, how about finishing your START? Is it possible that one of the reasons you haven’t finished something is because you…haven’t started? AND/OR… You haven’t fully finished your START? What do I mean by this? To start or finish anything you must START AND FINISH your START. How? You must... 1. SHOW UP. Are you showing up? How are you showing up? When you show up are you fully AVAILABLE? Are you showing your TRUE SELF…genuinely and authentically? 2. Be ALL IN. To FINISH your start you must be ALL IN to the START. A lot of times, we’re not ALL IN from the very start. We tiptoe, or walk around it – at times sticking our toe in — but we’re never fully diving in. The truth is, you don’t have to dive in, but you MUST get fully into the pool. Step into it, and begin. You must begin to WALK. As the water gets deeper, in no time you’ll be floating and flowing. And eventually you’re going to need to swim…or you’ll drown. FINISHING YOUR START means you’re ALL IN, and you're SWIMMING. 3. Go ALL OUT. Fully swim and flow in the deep end of the pool. Be ALL OUT…FULL OUT…so eventually so you can finish up your SHOW UP. FINISH UP YOUR START UP. Then take it to the next level. A lot of times we think about the END result, and think it’s so many miles down the road that we can’t even see the finish line, so we don’t start. If this is YOU today, START. Then finish what you start by FINISHING YOUR START. Focus on simply starting and fully finishing your start. FIRST. Start and get fully into the deep end, and immersed in your START. Remembering that in order to get to the ultimate finish line that's ahead, it’s going to require several finishes. You must have several FINISHES before you get to the ultimate finish line. The end of our lives is the ultimate finish line…and the beginning of a new to START. It's another ALL IN moment. The first finish is FINISHING YOUR START. Are you willing to be ALL IN to the start AND to go to the next FINISH? And so on… If you only partially START, by NOT finishing your start, you’ll keep starting...starting...starting and never finish because you haven’t first FINISHED YOUR START. (Got it?) The key to your finish is FULLY STARTING…finish your start, my dear! If you don’t fully finish your START, you’ll never finish your FINISH. Starting and finishing coincide. Finish your START so you’re able to start your FINISH. Then you can FINISH WHAT YOU START. And begin something new to START AGAIN... This may be YOU today. If you feel as though you need to start over or start again, it’s OKAY. Step in so you can go ALL IN. Then you can FINISH YOUR START. Please grab your SACRED S.O.L. D.A.T.E. JOURNAL (Daily Action To Engage with yourself.) TODAY’S SACRED S.O.L. STEP: What’s the ONE thing you’ve been meaning to start, but haven’t OR you’ve started something and haven’t finished? WARNING: This one's going to require some deeper thinking. Is it possible that the reason you haven't finished what you started is because you haven't finished your START? Today I'm going to teach you the secret to finishing what you start. What does it mean to you to “finish your START?” It means you'll become a starter AND a finisher. For some it may be easier to start, while for others it may be easier to finish. However, I think most people find themselves feeing stuck in the “I don’t know where to start” category. Start something. This has always been easy for me…but I’ve had to learn the hard way that starting simply for the sake of STARTING or running with an idea doesn’t always work real well. Perhaps you’re like me and you find it way easier to start, but… Is this working for you? For me, I got to a point in my life where I had to finally admit that STARTING wasn’t always the answer…and it simply wasn’t working. Starting without finishing will wear you out. Where’s your finish line? Done gets paid. If you don’t finish it, there’s a lack or loss of value. When you exchange that value for something of value you keep the circle of life going…the circle of value growing. If you start, but don’t finish, you won’t get results. Ideas start things. BUT… An idea doesn’t FINISH it. Inspiration will take you a long way, no doubt, and staying tapped into the true power of the inspiration will help you finish as well. HOWEVER, how about finishing your START? Is it possible that one of the reasons you haven’t finished something is because you…haven’t started? AND/OR… You haven’t fully finished your START? What do I mean by this? To start or finish anything you must START AND FINISH your START. How? You must... 1. SHOW UP. Are you showing up? How are you showing up? When you show up are you fully AVAILABLE? Are you showing your TRUE SELF…genuinely and authentically? 2. Be ALL IN. To FINISH your start you must be ALL IN to the START. A lot of times, we’re not ALL IN from the very start. We tiptoe, or walk around it – at times sticking our toe in — but we’re never fully diving in. The truth is, you don’t have to dive in, but you MUST get fully into the pool. Step into it, and begin. You must begin to WALK. As the water gets deeper, in no time you’ll be floating and flowing. And eventually you’re going to need to swim…or you’ll drown. FINISHING YOUR START means you’re ALL IN, and you're SWIMMING. 3. Go ALL OUT. Fully swim and flow in the deep end of the pool. Be ALL OUT…FULL OUT…so eventually so you can finish up your SHOW UP. FINISH UP YOUR START UP. Then take it to the next level. A lot of times we think about the END result, and think it’s so many miles down the road that we can’t even see the finish line, so we don’t start. If this is YOU today, START. Then finish what you start by FINISHING YOUR START. Focus on simply starting and fully finishing your start. FIRST. Start and get fully into the deep end, and immersed in your START. Remembering that in order to get to the ultimate finish line that's ahead, it’s going to require several finishes. You must have several FINISHES before you get to the ultimate finish line. The end of our lives is the ultimate finish line…and the beginning of a new to START. It's another ALL IN moment. The first finish is FINISHING YOUR START. Are you willing to be ALL IN to the start AND to go to the next FINISH? And so on… If you only partially START, by NOT finishing your start, you’ll keep starting...starting...starting and never finish because you haven’t first FINISHED YOUR START. (Got it?) The key to your finish is FULLY STARTING…finish your start, my dear! If you don’t fully finish your START, you’ll never finish your FINISH. Starting and finishing coincide. Finish your START so you’re able to start your FINISH. Then you can FINISH WHAT YOU START. And begin something new to START AGAIN... This may be YOU today. If you feel as though you need to start over or start again, it’s OKAY. Step in so you can go ALL IN. Then you can FINISH YOUR START. Please grab your SACRED S.O.L. D.A.T.E. JOURNAL (Daily Action To Engage with yourself.) TODAY’S SACRED S.O.L. STEP: What’s the ONE thing you’ve been meaning to start, but haven’t OR you’ve started something and haven’t finished? Write it down. Circle it. Commit by taking a step today in the process of fully FINISHING YOUR START. So you can START YOUR FINISH. I sure hope this helps you. My today's guest is Tim Paige. Tim is proud to be the Conversion Educator at LeadPages. An experienced marketer in all forms of media, Tim spends his days speaking to the most successful marketers across multiple industries, and sharing his findings with business owners who want to increase their marketing results. In this interview Tim provides practical advice about where to start building audience, how to drive traffic to your site and how to build, grow and treat your e mail list. Where to Start? It's one thing to be a fantastic writer and artist and it's another thing entirely to get people to actually experience your fantastic art. Start by building your e mail list cause it's an asset you own. Fist place Tim recommends to start is get the "title of your book".com domain and link that to a landing page. What is a landing page? It is a webpage, that's designed for people to take an action. And typically that action is to opt in - i.e. give their e mail address. Many people give a free chapter of their book, which is good IF people already know who you are or if people already know your writing. If you are a first time writer, instead of the free chapter of your book you better come up with a resource that will appeal to potential readers of your book. It should appeal to major pain or interest of the audience. In terms of conversion it is better to provide a 1 page pdf as lead magnet than an online course or anything else requiring time to digest How to Drive Traffic? To drive traffic to your landing page you have 2 options, you have to have money or time. If you have money, you can save yourself time by paying for the traffic. If you don't have the money (which happens more often :) you need to spend time to generate traffic. There is no fast solution with no money. If you want to drive traffic efficiently one of the best ways to do it is through content marketing. The good news is that as an author you already know how to create great content. You have to write quality blog posts that not only speak to your particular audience but also include relevant keywords for your books. You can get useful resources on keywords at Content Marketing Institute and Orbit Media Studio. You can write a blog post and then create different content out of it. Using Voice Bunny services you can get the audio version of the blog post. You can make a video based on that post and pit it on YouTube. That way you will be able to be everywhere. Later on, you will already have ready content + social proof and can pitch to guest post on other blogs. How to Treat Your Email List? The biggest mistake you can make with your email list is to NOT e mail them. You wanna keep in regular contact with your audience. Once they get in your e mail list set up an autoresponder sequence for every 3 days for minimum 6 e mails (maybe a course or entertainment series, your book chapters, etc.). When you're e mailing your list promoting your blog post make sure that you have a clever subject line they would immediately want to open. Also the copy of that e mail should have only one goal and that's to click to go to your website and read your blog. Do not include your entire post in your e mail because like that you will be losing traffic, comments, shares and similar SEO juice. Once or twice a month you can send something exclusive (content or free resource) that is only for your e mail list subscribers. It will make them feel special + when you promote your list you can mention that you provide special content for free. Don't e mail too much but e mail enough so your subscribers don't forget about you. You can treat your e mails very much like social media. Tim recommends that your e mails are as personal as they can possibly be. Remember that your e mails are going to people and they read them in the middle of their lives. So show them that you are real person too and treat them like people. Don't be afraid to sell, just make sure that you have earned your right to sell.
