Engage to support our work.Devin: What is your superpower?Kevin: I think it's doing the work, man. I had people a long time ago tell me, “Your work speaks for itself.” So you don't have to talk.In my conversation with Kevin Shird, the author of A Life for a Life, one powerful idea stood out—how education can be a path to redemption, even in the most challenging of circumstances. Kevin's journey, including his time in prison, is a testament to the transformative power of learning. He didn't allow the experience of incarceration to define his life negatively. Instead, he used the opportunity to educate himself and turn his life around.Kevin shared with me, “Education will be the answer out of this mess.” For him, the decision to embrace learning during his imprisonment was the catalyst for his personal and professional growth. Without that commitment, he believes he wouldn't be where he is today, contributing positively to society. Not everyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances is able to make the same transition, however. One of Kevin's former cellmates, Damien, tragically experienced a different outcome. Despite Kevin's encouragement, Damien struggled with the lingering trauma from his past, which included the loss of his parents and witnessing horrific violence. His story, as detailed in Kevin's forthcoming book, highlights how unresolved trauma and a lack of mental health support can derail someone's life, even after serving their time.Kevin's experience underscores the crucial need for education and mental health services, both in prison and beyond, as vital tools for rehabilitation and preventing recidivism. His story is a call to action for better support systems for those who need them most.Kevin Shird's book, A Life for a Life, is now available for pre-order on Amazon and other major platforms, with an official release scheduled for April 2025.tl;dr:* Kevin Shird shared the transformative power of education during his time in prison, which he credits for changing his life and helping him become a contributor to society.* In this episode, Kevin contrasts his journey with that of his former cellmate, Damien, whose struggles with trauma, addiction, and lack of support led him back to prison.* Kevin emphasizes that doing the work and making sacrifices have been central to his success, highlighting his relentless dedication to writing, education, and helping others.* He recounted a pivotal moment when he was invited to speak at the United States Conference of Mayors about the opioid crisis, marking a turning point in his journey from drug trafficking to being a voice for change.* Kevin's advice for success is simple: focus, sacrifice, and ignore distractions, as consistent effort will ultimately lead to meaningful results and personal growth. How to Develop Doing the Work As a SuperpowerKevin Shird's superpower is the relentless commitment to doing the work. He believes that consistent, focused effort is the key to achieving meaningful results. For Kevin, the value of hard work lies in its ability to speak for itself without the need for boasting or promotion. He emphasizes that dedication, sacrifice, and perseverance are essential for success in any endeavor.Kevin shared an anecdote that exemplifies his superpower when he was invited to speak at the United States Conference of Mayors in 2016. After publishing his first book, he was asked to participate in a panel with the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy and the Justice Department to address the heroin epidemic. He described the experience as surreal, reflecting on how his past in drug trafficking was now being leveraged to make a positive impact. This opportunity led to more influential work, eventually earning him an invitation to the White House.Tips for Developing the Superpower:* Sacrifice: Be prepared to make sacrifices, whether it's time with family, leisure activities, or other personal priorities, to achieve your goals.* Focus: Ignore distractions and outside noise, staying committed to the work that needs to be done.* Persevere: Keep pushing through, even when the work is difficult or doesn't immediately show results.By following Kevin Shird's example and advice, you can make "Doing the Work" a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileKevin Shird (he/him):Author and writer Kevin Shird Enterprises About Kevin Shird Enterprises: Content Creation Website: a.co/d/9peNrrsX/Twitter Handle: @kevin_shirdCompany Facebook Page: fb.com/KevinA.ShirdOther URL: simonandschuster.com/books/A-Life-for-a-Life/Kevin-Shird/9798888458440Biographical Information: Kevin Shird is a four-time published author, activist, and screenwriter. With a start in the Baltimore school system, most notably the historic Western Senior High School, Jada M. McCray, LCSW-C, began a lifelong dedication to education and growth. After receiving a Bachelor's Degree from Coppin State University, Jada moved on to the University of Maryland School of Social Work, where she received a Master's Degree of Social Work with Honors. After graduation, Jada launched her career as a Social Worker in the Child Protective Services Unit at The Baltimore County Department of Social Services. This eventually led to an active leadership role, introducing and implementing innovative programs such as Family Team Decision Making Meetings, which continue to help at risk families, social workers, and other community stakeholders find common ground. It was in this capacity that Jada discovered a passion for helping people to find mutual understanding and amiability within relationships. She further developed her clinical skills to begin training as a psychotherapist. Jada continued advancing her career and became a Licensed Certified Social Worker Clinical, a Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners Approved Supervisor, and a Certified Trauma Trained Therapist. With a continually growing love for mental health, Jada fully immersed herself into providing individual and family therapy, continuing her work and eventually becoming Director of Program Development at an area community mental health clinic, helping to grow the company from a small organization with 15 therapists to a major mental health provider with nearly 100 employees and 3 locations. Though having already succeeded greatly, Jada felt the call to forge new paths in the mental health field. In recent years, ada has become an entrepreneur. Presently, Jada M. McCray, LCSW-C, is the Co Owner and COO of Cornerstone Health Management, the founder and CEO of The Inspire Institute for Professional Development and Continuing Education, Founder of Joshua Homes, as well as the Co-Owner and COO for BTST Services Outpatient Mental Health Clinic, a mental health provider in Baltimore City, Prince George's County, Frederick County, Washington County. She wholeheartedly agrees with the agency's mission "to become the leader and trailblazer of both the health and social work fields..." In this capacity, Jada is a member of Baltimore County Schools Mental Health Committee, an Advisory Board Member of the Cecil County CSA, a Board Member of the Children's Guild and a member of the Charles Village Business Association. Most recently, Jada was honored as one of the "Women Who Move Maryland" given by the Baltimore Magazine.

Ralph welcomes newspaper publisher, Steve McNamara, to discuss the "San Quentin News," California's largest resident-run newspaper and the birthplace of the San Quentin News Forum— where incarcerated men and visiting police, attorneys, and judges share their perspectives on the criminal justice system. Then Peter Lurie, President of the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) joins us to talk about CSPI's work advocating for a safer, healthier food system, as well as their newsletter "NutritionAction." Plus, Ralph questions why the US still hasn't ratified the UN's Convention on the Rights of the Child— everyone else has done it!Steve McNamara is a newspaper publisher, editor, and reporter. He has previously written for and edited the Winston-Salem Journal, The Miami Herald, Car and Driver magazine, and the San Francisco Examiner. From 1966 to 2004 Steve and his wife, Kay McNamara, published the Pacific Sun—the country's second-oldest alternative weekly newspaper— and Steve has served as president of the California Society of Newspaper Editors and as founding president of the National Association of Alternative Media. In 2008 he helped revive the San Quentin News— a newspaper written and edited by incarcerated men at San Quentin Prison— and continues to work as a volunteer adviser at the paper. The recidivism rate among the inmates is zero… And actually, the problem that we have is the turnover is terrific because they keep getting paroled or serving their sentence. Steve McNamara, San Quentin NewsPrisons are little empires and the emperor is the warden, and what he decides goes. And many, if not most of the other wardens in California wanted no part of this damn newspaper. So we had a lot of trouble getting it distributed. But by now it's become very popular with the inmates throughout the state, and with many of the correctional officers as well. Because we've made some intelligent decisions. One was to write the personality profiles of some of the better correctional officers and of the programs that take place in the prison.Steve McNamara, San Quentin NewsMost people in the criminal justice system think that it goes this way: somebody breaks into a house, and then they get caught, and they go before a judge, and they get sentenced, and they disappear. And as far as many, many people in the criminal justice system are concerned, that's the end of it. These people have disappeared. We don't need to worry about them any more. But as everybody should know, 80-90% of them will be back on the streets…So do you want these guys to have the same sort of attitude about life as they did when they went into prison? If not, here's a chance maybe to move things in a better direction.Steve McNamara, San Quentin NewsI've credited the Center for Science in the Public Interest with transforming the nutritional habits of perhaps 40 million people. It generated front page news, it was on the evening television news, Congressional hearings. Recently, and this has happened to a lot of citizen groups, the media has not been covering what we're doing.Ralph NaderDr. Peter Lurie is President and Executive Director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest—an independent, science-based consumer advocacy organization that advocates for a safer, healthier food system. The CSPI also publishes NutritionAction, a healthy-living guide for consumers. Dr. Lurie previously worked with the Food and Drug Administration and Public Citizen's Health Research Group, where he co-authored their Worst Pills, Best Pills consumer guide to medications. We at CSPI try to educate consumers on the one hand. And on the other hand, we try to take care of the environment such that consumers in some ways don't even need to be as educated because the environment is different.Peter Lurie, President of Center for Science in the Public InterestI think that most people—including in all likelihood the Current Commissioner— understand that the food program within FDA has been the sort of “poor stepchild” of  the agency. People have focused more on drugs, they've focused more on medical devices, vaccines, even more recently on tobacco. And so food has been relatively neglected. And I think that we've at times paid the price for that.Peter Lurie, President of Center for Science in the Public InterestThere's no issue too trivial for the industry to show up in an obviously self-interested way and advocate on their own behalf.Peter Lurie, President of Center for Science in the Public InterestIn Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantis1. Late last week, the National Labor Relations Board issued a decision in the Cemex Construction Materials case, establishing a “new framework” that “when a union requests recognition on the basis that a majority of employees in an appropriate bargaining unit have designated the union as their representative, an employer must either recognize and bargain with the union or promptly file a... petition seeking an election.” Crucially though, this ruling also establishes that “if an employer who seeks an election commits any unfair labor practice that would require setting aside the election, the petition will be dismissed, and—rather than re-running the election—the Board will order the employer to recognize and bargain with the union.” This stunning decision is among the most important revisions to labor rules in decades and will apply retroactively.2. On a hot streak, Bloomberg Law reports that the NLRB also decided last week that Quickway Transportation “must reopen a terminal in Louisville, [Kentucky], that the company illegally shut down in 2020 after drivers there formed a union.” This sets a powerful new precedent for recourse against companies that have used the tactic of shutting down locations in order to stave off unionization – most notably Starbucks.3. The American Prospect reports that in Georgia, Governor Brian Kemp has aggressively courted EV manufacturers using Inflation Reduction Act tax incentives. Yet, Governor Kemp has awarded these “lucrative contracts for building out the factories to non-union construction firms.” These firms also happen to be major donors to Georgia Republicans, including Kemp himself, who formerly owned a non-union construction company. 4. Mondoweiss has published a new report on the founding of the Institute for the Critical Study of Zionism. This Institute “aims to support the delinking of the study of Zionism from Jewish Studies, and to reclaim academia and public discourse for the study of Zionism as a political, ideological, and racial and gendered knowledge project, intersecting with Palestine and decolonial studies, critical terrorism studies, settler colonial studies, and related scholarship and activism.”6. NBC News reports that a group of nearly 90 Democratic members of Congress sent a letter to President Biden last week calling on him to take further action to address the student debt crisis. These members ended the letter by writing “We urge you to continually find ways to use your authority to bring down student debt, address the rising cost of college, and make postsecondary education affordable for all students who choose that path. Borrowers have already waited nearly a year for the relief you announced in August 2022, and critics of your plan to help 43 million Americans are likely to renew their attacks with regard to your rulemaking announcement. We urge you to reject their bad-faith, partisan attempts to delay relief and carry out your efforts to help borrowers as quickly as possible.”7. According to the Baltimore Banner, Charm City may soon be facing its own version of the Cop City fight. Per the report, Baltimore officials are planning to construct a “tactical village” which will be used to train police. There are some differences between the projects however: whereas Atlanta's Cop City is slated to be built upon a razed section of forest, Baltimore's tactical village is proposed to be built on the campus of Coppin State University, a historically Black institution. Another key difference, while Cop City is estimated to cost $90 million, the tactical village is estimated at a whopping $330 million. The city has proposed a new “public safety income tax” to fund the project.8. The Washington Post has published a profile of Sarah Feinberg, an employee at the defense contractor Booz Allen Hamilton who blew the whistle on rampant over-billing of the government by the company. In July, Booz Allen agreed to pay $377 million to settle the case. Perhaps the most shocking portion of her complaint was when “a senior manager…called federal auditors “too stupid” to notice overcharging.”9. WTOP reports the fast-casual chain Chipotle has agreed to pay over $300,000 in a settlement with the District of Columbia regarding the company's alleged violations of child labor law. DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb's office identified more than 800 alleged violations in the District, including “requiring minors to work past 10 p.m., working more than eight hours a day, working more than six consecutive days, or working more than 48 hours in one workweek.” The settlement does not require Chipotle to admit wrongdoing.10. Finally, AP reports that, during an address to Jesuits in Lisbon,  Pope Francis “[said] ‘backward' U.S. conservatives have replaced faith with ideology.” So remember listeners, now when you say conservatives have replaced faith with ideology, you can cite the Pope. This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. Gwinnett Chamber hires new foundation leader to work with underserved businesses 2. Three Gwinnett senators appointed to state Senate study committees 3. And Junior League of Atlanta names Rep. Soo Hong as its 2023 Legislator of the Year     Plus, we visit with Leah McGrath from Ingles markets about cutting back on sugar   All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast.   Commercial : Slappey   Story 1. chamber   The Gwinnett Chamber has appointed Jason DiFranco as the vice president of the Gwinnett Chamber Foundation. DiFranco brings extensive experience from his previous roles, including working with the Gwinnett County Public Library system and various organizations such as the Boy Scouts of America and Cleveland Clinic-Hillcrest Hospital. In his new position, DiFranco will focus on creating equitable opportunities for underserved businesses in Gwinnett County through funding and grant programs. He aims to reduce financial barriers, provide educational and technical assistance, expand business networks, and address skill gaps to foster business growth. DiFranco's appointment is expected to contribute to the Foundation's success and gain support from Gwinnett's business community….read more about this at gwinnettdailypost.com   STORY 2: delegation   Three members of Gwinnett County's state Senate delegation, Senators Clint Dixon, Nabilah Islam, and Kim Jackson, have been appointed by Lt. Gov. Burt Jones to serve on Senate study committees. These committees will focus on local option sales taxes, truck driver shortages, and rural medical personnel recruitment. The committees were established during the 2023 legislative session, and the senators' findings and recommendations from their meetings during the legislative off-season may lead to the introduction of new bills in the next legislative session. Lt. Gov. Jones expressed confidence in the expertise and knowledge of the appointees and looks forward to addressing their recommendations in the 2024 Legislative Session.     Story 3: junior   State Representative Soo Hong, a Republican from Lawrenceville, has been honored with the 2023 Legislator of the Year award by the Junior League of Atlanta. Brian Kemp's House floor leaders for the 2023-2024 legislative term   we'll be right back:   Break 1: MOG- Tom Wages - then Obits   STORY 4: scammers   In another reminder from a previous story, Gwinnett County police are warning residents about phone scams where scammers impersonate law enforcement officials to extort money. In a recent incident, a Lilburn resident received multiple calls claiming he had to pay $9,000 to clear an arrest warrant. The scammer initially posed as a Gwinnett Sheriff's Office agent and received payment in Bitcoin. Subsequent calls claimed to be from Gwinnett Police Chief J.D. McClure, but no additional transfers were made. The police department emphasizes that they will never ask for payment over the phone and advises residents to be cautious of immediate payment demands, unsolicited calls or emails, and sharing personal or financial information. If scammed, residents should report the crime to the police and refer to the provided phone scam warning information.…….Read more about this at gwinnettdailypost.com     Story 5: primates   A study involving the mapping of DNA from over 800 individuals of 233 primate species has identified millions of mutations related to human diseases. The research provides valuable insights into the human genome and the causes of diseases. The study used a deep learning algorithm called PrimateAI-3D to analyze the genomic data. The findings revealed complex genetic relationships among primate species and shed light on the evolution of baboons. The research also suggests interbreeding occurred between early modern humans, Neanderthals, and Denisovans. Furthermore, the study aids in conservation efforts by identifying species in need of protection. The catalog of primate genomic information has also contributed to understanding unique mutations in humans.         Story 6: cats   Cats often knock things off tables and countertops to seek attention or to play. To prevent this behavior, ensure your cat's needs are met, including sufficient food and attention. Combat boredom by regularly changing their toys and using puzzle toys for mental stimulation. Discourage them from accessing tables and countertops by making them unappealing and removing enticing items. You can also use deterrents that emit unpleasant sounds or puffs of air when the cat jumps up. These deterrents are effective as cats won't associate you with the unpleasant experience. By implementing these strategies, you can discourage your cat from engaging in this behavior.     .……back in a moment   Commercial: ESOG- Gen Expo- Ingles 4   Story 7: smith   Jackson Smith, a recent graduate of Mountain View High School, has committed to the baseball program at Bryan College in Tennessee. Smith, who excels in multiple positions including outfielder, middle infielder, and utility player, was recognized as the Gwinnett Dugout Club's Player of the Month in March for the Bears. Additionally, he showcased his athletic abilities as an all-county punter for Mountain View's football team. Smith's commitment to Bryan College marks an exciting opportunity for his future in baseball.   Story 8: Reyes   Ethan Reyes, a senior at Brookwood High School, has made his commitment to join the baseball program at Coppin State University in Maryland. Today, we continue a series of conversations with educational leaders in the state of Maryland. We began our Midday on Higher Educationseries in 2018, speaking with college and university presidents throughout Maryland about the ways their institutions, large and small, fit into the communities in which they are located, and what they contribute to the state's workforce and quality of life. We suspended these conversations for the most part during the pandemic, and I am happy to revive them today with Dr. Anthony Jenkins, the president of Coppin State University. Coppin State is one of four Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in Maryland, and along with Morgan State, one of two here in Baltimore. Dr. Jenkins grew up in Washington, DC. He comes to Baltimore after serving as the President of West Virginia State University. He was appointed President of Coppin State in May, 2020, when his campus was empty of students due to the coronavirus. Students have been back for a while, but Coppin is dealing with a decline in enrollment, a situation that most schools are experiencing across the country.
