In this episode, Dr. Irene Cop welcomes Michael Ostrolenk, the Director of Human Relationships and Resilience at the Institute. Dr. Irene and Michael continue their discussion from the previous episode, which was entitled “Three Tools to Shift from Poor Performer to Elite Performer”. In this episode, they explore what it means to their clients to uplevel their performance. Michael introduces the concept of “Negative 20x”, which is the opposite of the popular concept of 10x-ing your performance. Michael explains that many of his clients operate under the mindset of not feeling good enough and judge themselves harshly, which leads them to try to prove themselves to others. Michael gives an example of a client who was always training for the next Spartan Race or Tough Mudder, not because he enjoyed them but because he was trying to prove something to his father and to himself. Michael suggests that instead of doing more of what they are already doing or even 10x-ing their performance, they should try negative 20x, which means slowing down and sitting quietly with themselves to notice what arises. Michael explains that this was the hardest race for his client, who found it uncomfortable to be with himself and not have a goal to train for. However, by doing so, he had breakthroughs and realized that his sense of not being good enough and the shame of being alive were driving him. He then stopped looking outward for validation and started looking inward to fulfill himself. Dr. Irene and Michael discuss how many of their clients feel like they are not enough, and they explore the reasons behind this feeling, which usually stem from their family of origin. Michael explains that by examining these underlying issues, clients can have breakthroughs and start to shift from poor performers to elite performers. They also discuss how being an elite performer does not mean being perfect or achieving all their goals but rather having resilience and the ability to bounce back from setbacks. Dr. Irene emphasizes the importance of being kind to oneself and not judging oneself harshly, as this can lead to burnout and other mental health issues. Michael suggests that clients should focus on progress, not perfection, and celebrate small wins along the way. In conclusion, this episode explores the concept of shifting from poor performer to elite performer, which is not about achieving perfection but rather having resilience and the ability to bounce back from setbacks. Michael introduces the concept of negative 20x, which means slowing down and sitting quietly with oneself to notice what arises. By doing so, clients can examine their underlying issues and have breakthroughs that can help them shift from poor performers to elite performers. They also discuss the importance of being kind to oneself and celebrating small wins along the way. If you're interested in learning more about achieving success through mindfulness and slowing down, this episode is a must-listen. Topics Discussed: Negative 20x approach Co-Regulation Importance of having a progress partner for accountability and support. The concept of "negative 20x," which is an alternative to the popular concept of "10x your performance." Negative 20x is about slowing down and sitting quietly within yourself instead of constantly trying to prove yourself to others. By doing this, clients can discover what's driving them and start looking inward to fulfill themselves, rather than looking outward for validation. This concept can help people who feel like they're not enough or are constantly judging themselves. The importance of having a progress partner for accountability and support, and the benefits of initiating a state change to open up the heart and mind for better communication and conflict resolution, both in personal and professional relationships. The practice of assuming the best in others and reframing situations to let go of stress and appreciate cultural differences. Having a progress partner for accountability and support can help you overcome the valley of despair when starting something new. His recently launched business - Kairos - helps clients to integrate more meaning and beauty into their lives through individualised ceremonies and rituals. In addition to his academic publishing, lecturing, and ethnographic field-work, he also brings years of experience teaching workshops on walking, play, performance, kink, and eco-sexuality. How to slow down and allow your being to 'catch up' with what has already transpired in your life, where perhaps you didn't have the time and space to properly mark it 22:55 Christos shares the story of a significant rite of passage that he undertook, travelling to Spain to walk a pilgrimage to support the transition of a close family member's spirit who died tragically 26:40 Christos describes how his walking and movement practice is central to his maintaining a link to receiving input from Creation, which then serves as a source for the seeds of ceremonies and rituals. 30:30 Christos uses an example from Michael's own life to walk through what it might look like to work with Kairos with a prospective client. He describes how he supports the client to 'tune-in' to the un-rational, embodied intelligence that is Kairos in order to discover what the proper way to proceed might be. Christos also describes the importance of community and gathering together to witness, and to share stories. 36:40 Michael asks Christos to describe his relationship with beauty and how it's central to his work with ceremony and ritual. Christos then recounts a youtube video which documents a chimpanzee in a state of awe and exuberance as he interacts with a waterfall. 43:02 Michael and Christos discuss how important it is to bring more ceremony and ritual into our lives, especially for those who are not connected to any of the major world religions or ancestral traditions. Christos describes how ceremonies also ground us in place and connect us to our corners of the world and also to our non-human neighbours. 49:03 Christos gives info for how to reach him and work with him #EmergentHuman

Michael Ostrolenk has been exploring the relationship between post-conventional living, transformational leadership, optimising health and regenerative paradigms his whole life. His interest in human growth and personal development began when he was 9 years old and worked with psychotherapist Pat Lawson learning biofeedback, meditation and guided imagery. The fact that Michael started his journey so young really intrigued me! So, while we will have him on again as a guest to explore the myriad of ways his expertise can help his clients, today's focus is on the adversity and disability Michael experienced as a child. “Our mess is so often our message” in that it can break us or make us -– and it can be the catalyst for a lifetime of learning and helping others as in Michael's case. Here is a summary of Michael's extensive bio: Master's degree in Transpersonal Counselling Psychology, from John F. Kennedy University Post-graduate training in somatic psychology from the California Institute for Integral Studies Certified massage therapist from the McKinnon Institute Marriage and Family Therapist, he has served patients dealing with mental illness, neurological impairments (Center for Adaptive Learning), chronic & life-threatening diseases and relationship problems. This included working with the Cancer Support Community in San Francisco Served on the Board of Directors for the Health Medicine Forum, as well as the Project Director for their Health Panel Program – a group of health-care practitioners from all disciplines who were dedicated to the collaborative exploration, practice and advancement of patient-centered integrated medicine Michael has helped with research exploring the use of various body/mind practices and traditional medicine approaches to cancer, energy medicine for ALS, neurofeedback Founding member of the Integral Institute Certified in Spiral Dynamics A Transpartisan Social entrepreneur, who is a leading expert in the field of transpartisan public policy. He has successfully convened policy initiatives in the areas of transparency, privacy, defence, foreign policy and national security from 2001-2020 including; Co-founded and served as National Director of the Liberty Coalition, a transpartisan coalition of groups working to protect civil liberties, privacy and transparency 2005-2020 Created and led the transpartisan Medical Privacy Coalition Served as Senior Political Analyst for the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons 2001-2011 and Citizens for Health 2001-2016 In response to unConstitutional wars, Ostrolenk co-founded the American Conservative Defense Alliance in 2008, which promoted a traditionally conservative foreign and defence policy. He was also a fellow at ICIT: Center for Cyber-Influence Operations Studies (CCIOS) in 2018. From 2016-2020 he served as Coalition Coordinator for the National Election Defense Coalition. Serving as Co-Director and President of Reuniting America, he organised and ran transpartisan leadership retreats from 2006-2008. He was also on the steering Committee for Open the Government 2015-2019. Has also consulted for Edwatch , Center for Cognitive Liberty and Ethics , International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology, Pentagon Budget Campaign and the Arlington Institute Graduate of SEALFIT's three-week academy and SEALFIT Kokoro camp, and is now a Master Coach and Head Instructor with SEALFIT's Unbeatable Mind Academy. Master Coach for Spartan 7 Round Table Phalanx Executive Experiential and Leadership Course The Director of Human Resilience at Apeiron Zoh where he works with medical and psychological staff in creating online and in-person programs seeking to transcend the limits of human performance and health He has also studied various martial arts including Tae Kwon Do, Japanese Jujitsu, Krav Maga, and Shaolin Kempo. Michael is also certified in MovNat. Some of his other training in somatic and transpersonal psychology includes: Body-Mind Practices – East and West; Healing and Heuristic Potential of Non-Ordinary States of Consciousness; Sensory Awareness; Family Systems: Somatic Movement Approaches I; Family Systems: Somatic Movement Approaches II; The Body: Experiences and Conceptualized Towards a Practical Phenomenology; Altered States of Consciousness; Intelligence and Insight Ways of Knowing; Body Oriented Psychotherapy- Panic & Depression; Body Oriented Psychotherapy- Inner Critic. … Not bad for someone who struggled with a learning disability! Talking points: How his learning disability then led to other mental and emotional challenges like obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) The importance of self-advocacy, even as a child The importance of parental support and listening to the child How “unconventional” solutions like biofeedback, meditation, and martial arts saved him The danger of labelling children with diagnoses rather than seeing them as whole people with needs due to underlying concerns The danger of treating all learning disabilities with a one-size-fits-all approach How he was originally “diagnosed” with being lazy since he really was brilliant in many areas even though his academic performance was low in others How there may be underlying issues like an undiagnosed traumatic brain injury (TBI) that are misdiagnosed if recognized at all That someone diagnosed with a learning disability may actually be neurodivergent and a genius, where they simply think differently. If you know much about Rob DuBois, or the SEAL's in general, you won't be surprised to learn that he busts the idea that some things are impossible. It is through a firm commitment to himself and a belief that he can be better that all things are possible. The very first of 12 tasks is commit to growth. Rob's guest, Michael Ostrolenk, has been exploring the relationship between post conventional living, transformational leadership, optimizing health and regenerative paradigms his whole life. Rob and Michael discuss how we are civilized to death. We medicate ourselves for things that wouldn't have to be treated if we were living in a more natural way. If anyone wants to start dialing in, sleep is the place to start. Michael also discusses environments of excellence and communities of practice as a technique to cement the training we receive. The more people you can get to buy into the changes you are trying to make to support you, the better. Rob can be reached at: Rob@impactactual.com.

Welcome to the Emergent Human with Michael Ostrolenk, where we explore optimizing health, embodied spirituality, and post-conventional living. Today I speak with Luba Vangelova (http://www.lubavangelova.com/), a co-founder of several pioneering, mixed-ages co-learning groups for independent learners, including The Hub (https://thehub.community/), and author of numerous articles on the future of learning for media outlets such as The Atlantic and the NPR/PBS MindShift websites. Vangelova discusses conventional education, specifically how the approach does not adapt to the various needs and skills of individual children. She details alternative models in which children are a part of the selection process of their learning. In response to concerns often raised about alternative methods of education, Vangelova notes that children, with rare exceptions, have an innate drive to learn the skills required to be productive members of a community. Key among the benefits is that children are responsible contributors to their own educational process, fostering drive, ownership, and self-determination. To learn more about Vangelova and her work, visit The Hub (https://thehub.community/) and her website (http://www.lubavangelova.com/). You can also find additional resources at https://alternativestoschool.com/. Welcome to the Emergent Human with Michael Ostrolenk, where we explore optimizing health, embodied spirituality, and post-conventional living. Today I speak with Antero Alli, author of two books advancing Timothy Leary's 8-Circuit Brain model: “Angel Tech” published in 1985 and “The Eight-Circuit Brain: Navigational Strategies for the Energetic Body”, published in 2009. Alli discusses his work with the 8-Circuit Brain model, which has been endorsed by Timothy Leary and by Robert Anton Wilson. The 8-Circuit Brain model posits eight interactive functions of Intelligence: physio-biological intelligence of survival, emotional-territorial intelligence and the will to power, symbolic-conceptual intelligence of intellectual acuity, social-moral intelligence and empathy with others, somatic intelligence of body wisdom and capacity for bliss, psychic intelligence of the self-aware brain and CNS, mytho-poetic intelligence of the planetary entity and DNA Matrix, and quantum-nonlocal intelligence of the mysterious singularity. Alli provides an overview of the first four circuits, the survival circuits, which focus on humans' physical, emotional, spatial, informational, social, moral, and sexual intelligence required to survive on the planet. Alli then discusses the upper circuits, the post-survival circuits. There are various methods that can bring a person to experience the upper-level circuits, and Alli describes the benefits and potential drawbacks of each circuit, depending on the level of engagement To learn more about Antero Alli and his work, visit The Eight-Circuit Brain (http://verticalpool.com/8circuitbrain1.html) and Vertical Pool Films (http://www.verticalpool.com/dvd.html). Welcome to the Emergent Human with Michael Ostrolenk, where we explore optimizing health, embodied spirituality, and post-conventional living. Today I speak with Dr. Leslie Ellis, a leading expert in the use of somatic approaches in psychotherapy, in particular for working with dreams, nightmares and the effects of trauma. She is the author of A Clinician's Guide to Dream Therapy (https://www.amazon.com/Clinicians-Guide-Dream-Therapy-Implementing-ebook/dp/B07S2T5MJ4) and offers many training opportunities in embodied, experiential dreamwork based on her book. Dr. Ellis discusses the value of engaging clients in dream work, as it helps point out salient emotional concerns, helps limit biased conscious editing, provides new perspectives on issues, and can serve as a diagnostic tool. Dreams often pick up on things which affect us during the day, even if we are not consciously aware of it. Dr. Ellis details how one could understand key life events through paying attention to trends in dreams and lends theories on how dreams may be predictive of future events. She also discusses indigenous populations' approaches to dreaming and theories on how the world may be dreaming through us. To learn more about Dr. Leslie Ellis and her work, visit her website (https://drleslieellis.com/). We will close out today's show with one of my favorite singer/song writers Stuart Davis and his song “Fear of Light” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzbIDsRY4Lc&list=OLAK5uy_mW1RAF2NUfbntN5SjtP9N99kDbD1EYHvc&index=6. Welcome to the Emergent Human, with Michael Ostrolenk where we explore optimizing health, embodied spirituality, and post-conventional living. Today's guest is Ryan Frisinger, an interdisciplinary specialist operating at the intersections of medicine, consciousness and culture. Ostrolenk and Frisinger discuss the complex relationship of humans and animals, including the ownership of animals and the ethics of eating meat. Frisinger details the complexity of meat consumption, including the importance of animal protein in human diets, the ways in which killing animals has evolved in the modern world, and how we can feed the large number of people who live on this earth. Frisinger encourages listeners to use higher levels of consciousness to entertain the idea that our pets have a complex emotional life that cannot be fully understood by humans. This can assist in humans endeavor to walk a fine line between being caretakers and allies while understanding there is limited room on earth for all animals to roam free. Lastly, Frisinger offers that humans can consider how our own reproduction affects other species. Frisinger recommends a few actions humans can take to foster a loving relationship and support their animals: - Look at your animals diet and consider the value of raw foods - Recognizing your animal's environment and what they love to explore - Appreciate your animal's space and try to learn their needs To learn more about Ryan Frisinger, visit his website (https://kosmicanimal.com/) and visit his health center (https://xenogenesis.co/about-us/). Kinsella on Liberty Podcast, Episode 065. I was a guest on The Medical Freedom Report Podcast, with host Michael Ostrolenk, a couple years ago, discussing Patents on Medical Technology and Pharmaceuticals (Feb. 24, 2011). Patents & Copyrights: intellectual property rights or monopoly control of ideas? Why are medical devices protected by patent law while medical procedures are exempt? And what about the government's use of compulsory licenses to force pharmaceutical companies to produce certain drugs like CIPRO. These are two medical-related examples in a long list of arcane exceptions and arbitrary details written in to intellectual property (IP) law. It is commonly believed that IP rights, such as patents, copyrights, and trademarks are necessary to foster innovation and protect the interests of the people and companies that create new products and ideas. Patent attorney Stephan Kinsella of the Mises Institute, holds an opposite view, and in this podcast with Michael Ostrolenk, discusses the growing movement that views IP law as not only anti-competitive and a barrier to innovation, but also as incompatible with true property rights. Michael and Stephan also talk about the evolution of IP from laws like the 1709 Statute of Queen Ann, an attempt by the monarchy to control the output of book printers, the influence of which carried into the copyright and patent provisions in the U.S. Constitution.
