Talking points: How his learning disability then led to other mental and emotional challenges like obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) The importance of self-advocacy, even as a child The importance of parental support and listening to the child How “unconventional” solutions like biofeedback, meditation, and martial arts saved him The danger of labelling children with diagnoses rather than seeing them as whole people with needs due to underlying concerns The danger of treating all learning disabilities with a one-size-fits-all approach How he was originally “diagnosed” with being lazy since he really was brilliant in many areas even though his academic performance was low in others How there may be underlying issues like an undiagnosed traumatic brain injury (TBI) that are misdiagnosed if recognized at all That someone diagnosed with a learning disability may actually be neurodivergent and a genius, where they simply think differently. Ostrolenk speaks with Sean Sessel, head of The Oculus Institute (https://www.oculusinstitute.com/) and a voracious learner with a fervent belief in the ability of the individual to better themselves. Through the Awaken Program (which shows people how to escape burnout jobs and craft careers that truly inspire them), Sean has found a means of enduring impact working with over a thousand different people. Sean discusses how his interest in helping people craft their dream careers grew out of his strength of absorbing, processing, and transmitting information and his deep interest in esoteric studies. He details five types of jobs: 1. A toxic work environment; 2. An unfulfilling job; 3. A bridge-job (short-term enjoyable); 4. A calling job; 5. A destiny/optimal career path. Through his framework (find first what do you love, then what the world needs, then how do you make money with it, and finally develop how do you get good at it), he helps his clients get to at least a calling job. Sean aims to ensure potential clients start with the best-fit program for their current situation. To find out more about his work, visit www.oculusinstitute.com/purposequiz. If you know much about Rob DuBois, or the SEAL's in general, you won't be surprised to learn that he busts the idea that some things are impossible. It is through a firm commitment to himself and a belief that he can be better that all things are possible. The very first of 12 tasks is commit to growth. Rob's guest, Michael Ostrolenk, has been exploring the relationship between post conventional living, transformational leadership, optimizing health and regenerative paradigms his whole life. Rob and Michael discuss how we are civilized to death. We medicate ourselves for things that wouldn't have to be treated if we were living in a more natural way. If anyone wants to start dialing in, sleep is the place to start. Michael also discusses environments of excellence and communities of practice as a technique to cement the training we receive. The more people you can get to buy into the changes you are trying to make to support you, the better. Rob can be reached at: Rob@impactactual.com.

Ostrolenk speaks to professional photographer Beau Simmons and Army Rangers Dan Blakeley and Tom Amenta about their new book “The Twenty-Year War: A Photo Journal Dedicated to Veterans of the Global War on Terror and Their Stories.” In the book, American combat veterans open up about their military service, the hard realities of combat, their transitions post-military, and what it's like to find purpose and create new lives. In the interview they discuss what it was like to create the book which included visiting 42 states in 61 days, traveling 16,000 miles. The book includes 71 unique veteran voices. The conversation is wide ranging and includes Dan discussing three phases of leaving military service which include Phase one: Out of the Fight; Phase two: No Uniform, Now What?; and Phase three: Self-Reflection. He acknowledges, though, that this is not necessarily everyone's path. Beau speaks of his learning to move beyond the self and serving something bigger than oneself as a result of the road trips to visit the 71 vets. Tom discusses his inner work to help heal from combat. The interview also includes a discussion on taboo topics, the need for tribe, and invisible wounds. They also discuss specific interviews and what they meant to each of the three creators. They end the conversation with the lessons they want the listening audience and hopeful book buyers to take away from the book. To purchase the book visit https://twentyyearwar.com/

ISBN-10: 0190054514 ISBN-13: 978-0190054519 Publisher: Oxford University Press (February 14, 2020) Language: English People say there is no handbook when it comes to raising kids. Not true anymore. Resilience Parenting is it if you want to raise kids who can handle anything! I've worked with children for thirty years, and I wish I had the wisdom contained in this book when I started. It would have made me a far better parent and teacher." —Mark Goblowsky, host of the podcast Strength Through the Struggle Resilience Parenting: Raising Resilient Children in an Era of Detachment and Dependence by Chris and Holly Santillo Publisher: Lioncrest Publishing (March 22, 2019) Your children will face many challenges in the years ahead, so you want to raise them to be resilient—strong, adaptable, and able to recover. It is your mission to empower your son or daughter to cultivate a functional and fulfilling life. This essential handbook will help you achieve that goal. In Resilience Parenting, martial arts instructors Chris and Holly Santillo share the insights they have gained as teachers and parents. They offer positive alternatives to lecturing, bribing, and punishing; focusing instead on three Pillars: Learning, Integrity, and Service. By applying these powerful principles, you can inspire your children to develop the independence they need to succeed as adults while renewing their connection to family and community. Whether you are raising a teenager or just starting your family, the methods prescribed in this book will help you unlock your greatest potential as a parent. Parents, both new and old, will find much of value in these pages." —Kirkus Review "This is the book that the nurse should hand new parents at the hospital. It is an articulate, straightforward, and approachable guidebook, which can be easily read in just a handful of hours, on transforming the bundle of baby into a productive adult." —Martial Journal "Chris is fighting the twin evils of our era: excessive fear for our kids, and busybodies trying to enforce it." —Lenore Skenazy, president of Let Grow, author of "Free-Range Kids," and founder of the Free Range-Kids movement "Resilience Parenting provides a new twist on time-tested tactics that will help us be better and do better. Read this book!" —Connor Boyack, president of the Libertas Institute and author of "Passion-Driven Education: How to Use Your Child's Interests to Ignite a Lifelong Love of Learning" "This is a superb and practical book, founded on years of teaching and parenting. The principles in this book provide the life tools missing in most homes and classrooms today. Learn them, then use them." —Steven P. Bucci, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense "As a Special Forces officer and lifelong student of leadership and training, I have spent a lot of time and effort trying to divine what makes a person more resilient. Chris and Holly Santillo's book Resilience Parenting masterfully distills what they have learned in over twenty years of teaching martial arts and parenting and conveys those lessons in an easy-to-understand and entirely implementable way. As someone who has entrusted my children to their training--and who personally knows their three boys--I can attest that what they do works. I give his book my strongest possible recommendation." —Roger D. Carstens, Lieutenant Colonel US Army Special Forces (retired) "We are at a crossroads in our country. We either continue down the path we are on--creating generations of kids who lack mental fortitude, emotional resilience, and physical health, leading our country to financial, moral, and social ruin--or we pivot and begin to create the conditions for our children to grow into mature, healthy, free, and fully functioning adults. Resilience Parenting is a road map toward the latter. I hope enough parents are smart enough to pick it up." —Michael D. Ostrolenk, M

Welcome to the Emergent Human, with Michael Ostrolenk where we explore optimizing health, embodied spirituality, and post-conventional living. Today's guest is Ryan Frisinger, an interdisciplinary specialist operating at the intersections of medicine, consciousness and culture. Ostrolenk and Frisinger discuss the complex relationship of humans and animals, including the ownership of animals and the ethics of eating meat. Frisinger details the complexity of meat consumption, including the importance of animal protein in human diets, the ways in which killing animals has evolved in the modern world, and how we can feed the large number of people who live on this earth. Frisinger encourages listeners to use higher levels of consciousness to entertain the idea that our pets have a complex emotional life that cannot be fully understood by humans. This can assist in humans endeavor to walk a fine line between being caretakers and allies while understanding there is limited room on earth for all animals to roam free. Lastly, Frisinger offers that humans can consider how our own reproduction affects other species. Frisinger recommends a few actions humans can take to foster a loving relationship and support their animals: - Look at your animals diet and consider the value of raw foods - Recognizing your animal's environment and what they love to explore - Appreciate your animal's space and try to learn their needs To learn more about Ryan Frisinger, visit his website (https://kosmicanimal.com/) and visit his health center (https://xenogenesis.co/about-us/).
