S2E6: How to Create a Compelling Brand for Yourself and Your Business With Damien Foord (Branding for Dropouts)

Successful Dropout

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 2, 2018 51:30

Damien Foord is on Successful Dropout for the 3rd time to demystify the process of building a great brand. A brand is more than just your logo and your business card. It’s much more than your reputation or what people think about you or how you make them feel. A brand is how you make an effort beyond yourself—a company or project or just a professional persona—relatable on a human level. For people that went to university, they largely live off of their uni’s brand until they have enough experience and expertise of their own. For dropouts, we don’t have that luxury. That’s why creating a deeply resonating and emotionally connected brand is one of the most important things a dropout can do. If you want to DROPOUT successfully you came to the right place. WARNING Do not dropout unaware of life and its consequences, just prepare yourself the best you can for the real world. Don’t be afraid your not the only one that wants to dropout. Be safe, stay humble, drive safe, get ya ID, GED or GED equivalent for whatever state you live in and write down practical goals, not no irrational shit that everyone told you, be a leader. Thats the best route to take. Make sure your information is fruitful and make sure you articulate yourself to your parents in a respectful manner, understand they are only worried because they already experienced life. Have a Plan Bruh for-real. Never give up on yourself and you will be ok. Never look for acceptance you will always fail that way. Sivana is an ambitious and outspoken 20-year-old who believes the reason most young people aren’t achieving what they want is that they are unclear on who they want to become, undisciplined, and have a lack of support in education outside of the current system. From an early age, she has had her hand in different endeavors, including a successful fashion resale business, to a failed PR business. As a college dropout, Sivana has traveled from a suitcase for 14 months forging relationships and working with Forbes CEO’s, NYT bestselling authors, and online influencers. She is now on a mission to leave an impact through new forms of education, digital marketing, and influence. Sivana is passionate about speaking to high school students, reading way too many books (if that’s even a thing), and watching reruns of Survivor. Sivana is very much a kindred spirit and the epitome of a Successful Dropout with her approach to life and work. From her struggle to know herself, to her commitment to get 1% better everyday and her "RAD" system of reflect, align, do...Sivana has thrown herself into the self-directed life. We haven't heard the last of her!  Some of the things we talk about Making money in high school Success versus accomplishment Struggling with who you are and what you should do with your life A system for figuring out who you, what you want to do, and how you're going to get there On purpose and passion On people judging you for dropping/opting out of the status quo Turn stress into an adventure Always asking "what's great about this?" The power of committing to being 1% better everyday!  When is quitting something good...and when is quitting something bad? The importance of never losing momentum Advice for people who are thinking of dropping out of college Advice for people who are already on their entrepreneurial journey A system for progress and achievement (RAD) Reflect - Take the time to get to know yourself, what you want to do, be and have.  Align - Place yourself in the right situations with the right people that are headed where you want to go. Do - Take massive action! Take the first step!  Resources Sivana's website Connect with Sivana on Instagram!  THANK YOU! Thanks again for listening to the show! This is the continuation of Matt's awesome story about what is possible when a young person embraces personal responsibility and self-directed, real-world education. In today's conversation, Matt continues to discuss his health research and how the Bosnia trip was a catalyst for more learning. I learn about Mitochondrial health, sunlight and Vitamin D, dangers of our unnatural environment, cold therapy and cold thermogenesis, reducing blue light exposure and maintaining a healthy biological rhythm. Matt used his research to start a successful business: Ra Optics Background: In the midst of my growing frustration about things like #MarchForOurLives and the misleading of young people, I received relief and some hope in the form of an email. It opened: "I am 18 and have been watching your show for over a year. It has helped me tremendously in my process of deciding not to attend college, starting on my own business, and becoming financially independent at age 18. If you happen to have some time ever, I would really love to chat with you and share my story to hear your feedback. I love your community's open-mindedness and focus on logic and considering facts and argument; this is critical and totally lacking." This was written by Matt Maruca, who began his self-education journey at age 13. In middle school Matt began seeking answers to a variety of chronic ailments, discovered the joys of self-directed learning and never looked back. After realizing and harnessing his efficacy and abilities, he found school to be an almost intolerable obstacle to his education. The story only gets more interesting from there. For this week's episode I wanted to share an interviewed I did on Stephen Warley's Life Skills That Matter podcast. This was part of an "interview swap" that Stephen and I did, and you can find his interview on Successful Dropout here.  Stephen is an absolute boss and is doing some incredible things to push this new paradigm of work we are entering into as a society. I had a blast on his show and  we discussed a lot of things including: Rethinking the American Dream. Calculating the cost of your ideal lifestyle. Moving from a permission mindset to a freedom mindset. What I learned from trying so many different career paths. I explains the concept of self-credentialing. Some inspirational quotes to remember: “My goals are all, they’re all set with the primary focus being, like, how do I want to spend my time and who do I want to spend my time with and the money, I believe, sort of comes as a result of that.” “You stick to doing what you love and building what you love, as long as it’s working, you know, I think it’ll pay off.” “I’ve never wanted to do something just because I’m supposed to do it.” Some coaching advice: I recommended these actions to start breaking out of your comfort zone to try new and different things: 1)  Don’t get hung up on finding the one right thing, pick one and just get started. 2) Switch, pivot, or quit if the first thing you do doesn’t work or you need to do other things as well. 3) Action begets more action, so don’t wait for the inspiration to strike to get started. Part Two of Two, Please Make Sure You Heard Part One! As as follow up to our conversation on dropping out of college, Derek Magill and I explore how to "build your own credential" in lieu of a degree. Derek explains why he believes such a self-directed credential is superior to the four-year degree, and he illustrates how you go on to signal that credential in the market. Derek is just twenty-four years old, but he is already enjoying great success as an entrepreneur, freelancer and writer. He also currently serves as the Director of Marketing for Praxis. Derek dropped out of the University of Michigan during his sophomore year because he "was not finding the experience valuable towards (his) intellectual and professional goals." He adds: "Over the last four years or so, my decision to leave has been vindicated. I’ve got a wonderful life, a great career, and I’ve gotten to spend 3-4 extra years pursuing my values on my own terms." Also discussed: - don't let your interests "sit in study mode" - How did Derek land a Director of Marketing job in your early 20s? - Creating your own job "build a digital paper trail" - the limits of resumes - How to establish your online presence Derek also answers the following listener questions: (thank you Michael Erwin) What limits does he see to the Praxis model? As in, industries, careers, and further development. What blowback has he experienced in trying to build these partnerships with businesses/startups in regards to their attitude to non-degreed candidates and replacing the college credential (at least for the Praxis participants)? What has he learned in building Praxis that those older in life and career could benefit from? What struggles have there been with government and establishment ed in building Praxis, specifically in the frame of it being a college alternative? My questions include - How did he have such clear personal and professional goals at such a young age? - Background: Where did his political and philosophical grounding come from, including an intense interest in alternative education? - When did he realize he'd made the right choice to drop out? - What made him so confident that he could teacher himself better than the University of Michigan professors could? An inside look at a powerful system for success that our family has been following now for about 15 years.  It has helped us expand our vision and achieve dreams that are bigger than we ever thought we could.   It’s a system for success that I’m pretty sure you won’t hear much about in many other places. But this has been a critical process for us individually and as a family. Like many good things in my life, I learned about this process from a mentor who had focused on success in this specific area of life more than I had. I will be forever grateful to my family coach and good friend, Greg Gunn for opening my eyes to this life changing system for success.   In this episode all eight of us gathered around the table for a fun discussion right after we finished our 15th Annual Gienger Family Goal Setting Retreat.  What is that?  Here’s how it works. We all get together as a family at the beginning of each new year to celebrate our successes in the last year and set goals for the new year. We start with a a focusing talk by dad.  Then we spend 3-4 hours in solitude and silence where each family member journals on their successes in the last year and writes down goals for the new year.  After everyone takes time alone to document their successes and work on their individual goals, we come back together to share what we have written down.  This gives us a rich space in time to celebrate each other’s successes and become aware of how we can support each other’s goals. After we finished our time of sharing this January, we all sat around the table, clicked record and reflected on the experience.  As you listen to us discuss the following questions, we hope you will gain insights that could help you create a system like this, in your own way, in your own life.   What are some of your earliest memories of doing our Annual Gienger Family Goal Setting Retreats?   Can you describe what it has been like for you to do this when you were young kids?   How would you describe the actual process we have used in our annual goals setting retreats?   To the spouses who married in to the family (Teliah and Auren): Do you remember when was your first time joining us in an Annual Family Goal Setting Retreat?  What was it like for you to participate in this process? What do you think have been the benefits of doing this for you and for our family?  What’s the value of this from your perspective? What are some of the highlights or most meaningful elements of what we experienced or what you heard or shared in this year’s Annual Family Goal Setting Retreat? How do you see this carrying on into the next generation? Resources: Check out the Family ID podcast by Greg Gunn who was Lonnie's initial coach on this topic.  Kylon and Te referenced their excellent Successful Dropout podcast for young people looking for an alternative to the traditional institutional university education route.  After listening to the podcast, some have asked for a copy of the questions that we have used over the years to guide us through our celebration and goal setting process.  If you're interested, you can check out our Gienger Goal Setting Annual Retreat Questions. As with all systems, we hope you can learn something from our process...but please be sure to customize this system in a way that works best for you.  Thank You! Thanks again for listening to the show! Today our expert guest is Kylon Gienger, an educational and social thought leader, serial entrepreneur, and the host of The Successful Dropout Podcast.   Kylon grew up in a mountain cabin, homeschooled with his siblings. He had a lot of curiosity, and the freedom to pursue it. Then, after graduating, he felt the pressure to go to college – it just felt like what people do.   A few months into his Freshman year, in the middle of a marketing class, Kylon decided to drop out.   Over the next few years, Kylon worked as a youth pastor, construction worker, Navy serviceman, and musician, and started three different businesses.   Kylon is still working on a wide variety of projects, including The Successful Dropout, because he truly values freedom with his time and lifestyle – he is a self-described 100% autonomous human being.   There's a concept that Kylon discusses a lot on his show, and he believes it is the one common factor between all of his successful guests: they have mastered the art of “just in time” learning.   Formal schooling, for the most part, is “just in case” learning. You get a well-rounded education that theoretically prepares you for anything, but many people end up graduating prepared for nothing.   Just in time learning means learning in the context of taking action and taking steps forward – in that way, you're always learning in the context of doing, and in the context of something that you're curious about. This creates an incredible retention, and you'll save time and money in the process.   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway   “One of the biggest mistakes that you can make is just to accept the norms of your time, whatever that looks like, and not accepting the norm is the secret to really big success and changing the world.” --   Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. Photboxx built it's foundation in the hashtag printing industry and has quickly become a product used internationally by some of the world largest brands including Harley Davidson, Coca-Cola, TGI Fridays, Teen Vogue and Acura. This new startup has inspired thousands of fans to engage with their favorite brands on social media. Focus is key. Learn to say no to opportunity. Stop committing to multiple things at once and moving on if they aren't showing promise after six months. Define your Be, Do and Have, then commit to one direction for at least two years, saying no to everything else even if it's an enticing opportunity. If you want to build a scalable business, learn how to work with people and build and lead a team. Embrace the low points, because there is a lot to learn during those seasons, and ultimately it's just another step towards success. Also, often times, the best opportunities will come when you are experiencing your greatest challenges. This activity put him on the map at his school as a hard working and budding entrepreneur. It wasn’t long until a college buddy’s father invited Andrew to join him in building a healthcare business. In 2016 Andrew went from 0-100 quickly as the healthcare business grew. It was really a pleasure to have Andrew on the show since we have been friends on social media for a long time now. Talk about some tough periods in Andrew's life where he dealt with health issues that held him back. Talk about all the disparities within the healthcare system and what Andrew and his partner are doing to combat these. Talk about a ton more! For her day job, she works in communications, and is the editor of Gap Year Stories, a platform that publishes student perspectives on shaping your own learning experiences.  Rainesford and I have a lot in common with our mindset around education and entrepreneurship...she also owns a hot yoga studio, which is one of the businesses I own as well. In this episode we talk a lot about uncertainty, not knowing the answer, anxiety, and how messy and unclear times are actually the key to finding your way, learning, and ultimately success.  There are so many quotable snippets in this episode, Rainesford is the real deal - a go-getter, a self-teacher and an entrepreneur. She's the epitome of a Successful Dropout.  "Usually when you are shaping your own path, it's a combination of belief in something that matters to you, incredible amounts of effort, and just the right amount of risk." "Sometimes the greatest opportunities, moments and endeavors in your life are really messy. They aren't cookie-cutter, they aren't picture perfect and to me I think that's the magic of it."
