If you’re acquiring a business, immediately overhauling the way the company operates is not likely going to be the most effective strategy. Unless the company was a fire sale, you’ll lose customers and staff by changing too much too soon. Getting people who are already in the company to buy-in to what you’re planning is crucial. When you buy a business, you’re acquiring all of its people too—and you can’t just expedite trust. On today’s show, we have Kylon Gienger, president of Acquira (an investment fund for people looking to buy small businesses and an accelerator for those looking to do the same), who is going to prove the value of securing key relationships in new acquisitions, particularly with the people who will be executing the strategic plan to increase the value of the business. On the way, we explore the crucial role of emotional intelligence for any business buyer, the different types of search fund investment structures and what an ideal acquisition entrepreneur profile looks like. This is an episode you don’t want to miss if you’re looking at taking over a new operation. What You Will Learn In Today's Podcast Interview Why the acquisition entrepreneur is on the rise and how they can help fill a void in the impending wave of Baby Boomer transitions The differences between on-market and off-market deals How private equity is expanding the multiples in the home services industry Why some sellers would be willing to take less of a purchase price to sell their “baby” What the “gauntlet” is and how it’s used to filter the investors and business buyers Acquira brings into their ecosystem Why you should never underestimate the human component of a deal—livelihoods depend on it The reason you should keep on the previous owners in any lower market companies you acquire, if possible How to hire good people—those who match your values as well as have the skills and training you need in the role What factors Acquira considers when evaluating new businesses to invest in and their strategies to mitigate risks discovered How Acquira is using EOS to onboard the companies they buy When you should compromise with established staff rather than steamroll their ideas post-acquisition The value of ongoing learning as a business owner (even if it’s just-in-time!) Why understanding the human element of transactions can help you rise to the top as the buyer of choice What the "Silver Tsunami" investment landscape looks like as $10 trillion in Baby Boomer business assets makes its way to market How to make the transfer of ownership enjoyable rather than traumatic Building trust in the culture of your company is vital to making the value creation changes you need Are You Growing The Value of Your Business Take The 2-Minute Assessment To Get Your Intentional Growth Score™ And 1-Page Vision Board. Are your company's current initiatives intentionally designed to increase the value of the business? Do you know what you want from your business long term and why? Do you know what your company is worth? Do you know the differences between Management, Family Transitions, PE Firms, ESOPs and Strategic Buyers? Does the business have a written strategic plan on how to achieve the desired normalized EBITDA and valuation? For this week's episode I wanted to share an interviewed I did on Stephen Warley's Life Skills That Matter podcast. This was part of an "interview swap" that Stephen and I did, and you can find his interview on Successful Dropout here. Stephen is an absolute boss and is doing some incredible things to push this new paradigm of work we are entering into as a society. I had a blast on his show and we discussed a lot of things including: Rethinking the American Dream. Calculating the cost of your ideal lifestyle. Moving from a permission mindset to a freedom mindset. What I learned from trying so many different career paths. I explains the concept of self-credentialing. Some inspirational quotes to remember: “My goals are all, they’re all set with the primary focus being, like, how do I want to spend my time and who do I want to spend my time with and the money, I believe, sort of comes as a result of that.” “You stick to doing what you love and building what you love, as long as it’s working, you know, I think it’ll pay off.” “I’ve never wanted to do something just because I’m supposed to do it.” Some coaching advice: I recommended these actions to start breaking out of your comfort zone to try new and different things: 1) Don’t get hung up on finding the one right thing, pick one and just get started. 2) Switch, pivot, or quit if the first thing you do doesn’t work or you need to do other things as well. 3) Action begets more action, so don’t wait for the inspiration to strike to get started. So this episode could potentially destroy my career. I decided to sit down and get really honest about a few beliefs of mine in lieu of an email I received from a listener. Honestly I felt really exposed recording this, and I'm still not sure if it was the right move or not. One thing I always want to make sure and do is be authentic with you guys...and I want us all to be authentic with each other. I think it's really important to open up respectful dialogues and debates on important topics and to try to understand each other's point of view. Successful Dropout is a very special community. I want it to be a place where anyone from any background in any circumstance can succeed and feel like they are home. Resources Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Fankl THANK YOU! Matt is originally from the Rocky Mountains in Idaho and moved to Miami after founding Daycation and leaving school at Brown Unive. The goal was to get closer to the hotels Daycation was partnering with to begin building the company. Matt worked in hotels growing up in Idaho and always had a passion for architecture and hospitality. Matt left school after his first year at Brown where he took courses in economics, urban studies, math, business and philosophy. I loved chatting with Matt and hearing his story. From the early days of building a startup, to dropping out of college, to hitting rock bottom (literally sleeping on rocks!)...it's a familiar and inspiring story for many of us. I especially loved talking with Matt about acting from first principles...this is a habit you need to get into! Some lessons: Don't give up even when the going gets really painful. I think perseverance is often overlooked as a key trait to success in entrepreneurship, lots of people quit too early. Enjoy the ride. Finding a mix or "balance" is important to keeping mentally and physically healthy, and also helps when keeping track of timeline. Go for it. Overthinking will lead to inaction. Surround yourself with people who have the "skills" or traits you'd like to emphasize in yourself. Hint: You will be spending a lot of time with your Co-Founders. Get to ramen profitable asap to have more peace of mind which will help in avoiding a scramble for investor dollars. Resources Daycation Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill THANK YOU! Loved having my wife Te on for this one! We sat down with a couple drinks to talk about excuses, "extreme ownership" and several other things. Te is a serial entrepreneur, health coach, yoga instructor, and author. In addition to owning Renu Hot Yoga and NUYU Juice Bar, she also hosts her own yoga teacher trainings, runs private health retreats, coaches private clients, and sells her book "Choose You". Today our expert guest is Kylon Gienger, an educational and social thought leader, serial entrepreneur, and the host of The Successful Dropout Podcast. Kylon grew up in a mountain cabin, homeschooled with his siblings. He had a lot of curiosity, and the freedom to pursue it. Then, after graduating, he felt the pressure to go to college – it just felt like what people do. A few months into his Freshman year, in the middle of a marketing class, Kylon decided to drop out. Over the next few years, Kylon worked as a youth pastor, construction worker, Navy serviceman, and musician, and started three different businesses. Kylon is still working on a wide variety of projects, including The Successful Dropout, because he truly values freedom with his time and lifestyle – he is a self-described 100% autonomous human being. There's a concept that Kylon discusses a lot on his show, and he believes it is the one common factor between all of his successful guests: they have mastered the art of “just in time” learning. Formal schooling, for the most part, is “just in case” learning. You get a well-rounded education that theoretically prepares you for anything, but many people end up graduating prepared for nothing. Just in time learning means learning in the context of taking action and taking steps forward – in that way, you're always learning in the context of doing, and in the context of something that you're curious about. This creates an incredible retention, and you'll save time and money in the process. The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “One of the biggest mistakes that you can make is just to accept the norms of your time, whatever that looks like, and not accepting the norm is the secret to really big success and changing the world.” -- Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. As a 14-year-old, Cameron Zoub had an entrepreneurial drive. His pull towards business was so strong that he left the public school system and got his GED so he could devote all of his time to his business endeavors. Now at 18, he has successfully raised 1.4 million dollars through angel investments and paid back his original investment in full, in only one years time. Each startup has progressively increased his profits and exposure. Currently, he is running 3 companies, and ready to launch 2 more. His companies will exceed 1 million dollars in profits this year. His goal is to grow his capital so he can move into the VC space. One of the main reasons for Cameron dropping out of high school was due to the fact that he felt he was being held back. In the future, Cameron plans to enhance public schools and lead a widespread initiative to make extensive changes to improve the educational system while continuing to grow and start new businesses. Cameron is a killer dude. He is only 18 years old and already has millions in sales under his belt...I had a blast chatting with him. Seth Hymes is the Founder and CEO of In Demand Career Training. In Demand Career Training teaches future entrepreneurs how to get a job in the rapidly growing field of digital marketing. A graduate of NYU's film school, Seth found digital marketing in 2014 after successfully doing marketing for another company….not long after that he quit his job and began working for clients independently. Since then, he has created the Digital Marketing Career Blueprint, which teaches students the in-demand skills in digital marketing from the ground-up, as well as how to put together resumes, talk to hiring managers, and get the job you want. Seth has not only found great success with In Demand Career Training, but has also helped literally hundreds of students get interviews and jobs or become entrepreneurs themselves. This entire interview was gold...but my favorite part is the wisdom Seth shares towards the end of the episode. Seth is extremely passionate about helping his students learn the ins and outs of digital marketing, and he's producing incredible results with most of his students getting great entry jobs without a college degree in under a year! This week I brought a special guest on - my second cousin Christian Bell. It was an absolute pleasure to chat with him. He has uniquely varied experiences in formal education, Ivy League schools, government, and small business that provide well-rounded perspectives on the pros and cons of each. We chat about: Ineffectiveness of government and lack of incentive Checking the appropriate boxes to get into Ivy League schools Christian's experience at various Ivy League schools (Oxford, Yale etc.) Education doesn't foster curiosity, most of the time it even beats it out of you. Or should you only invest your time into your natural curiosities? Or both? Many shirts are too short for my torso Is a degree in business necessary to start your own business? In this episode of FEAR NOT, host of the Successful Dropout podcast, Kylon Gienger shares with us the ways in which he faces all of his fears.
Micah dropped out of Cornell university to found Maidbot, a company on a mission to bring Rosie the Robot (kind of like The Jetsons TV show) to reality - starting with the world's first housekeeping robot for hotels. Maidbot is starting to attract some major customers such as The Marriott, and The Hilton...and just finished it’s first round of funding. I really enjoyed talking with Micah. He's young, but he's sprinting out of the gate. What struck me most about this episode was Micah's mentality and reason for starting Maidbot. He actually worked in the industry he wanted to build a business in (hospitality), and experienced the problems and challenges within the space first-hand. With this knowledge he started working on solutions to solve those problems...which eventually turned into Maidbot. At the end of the day, being an entrepreneur and building great businesses is about solving people's problems by building a great solution. You won't know what solution to build, if you don't understand the problem, and you won't understand the problem, if you don't immerse yourself in the market. Micah's advice at the end of the episode is gold! Resources Maidbot SharkPuncher - Micah's first app If by Rudyard Kipling Email Micah at micah@maidbot.co THANK YOU! The epitome of what it means to be a life hacker, Maneesh Sethi went to travel the world using hacked plane tickets shortly after graduating from Stanford University. He created his website, Hack the System, with the intention of showing his readers how to achieve the lifestyle of their dreams (and teaching them how to get free plane tickets). His latest project, Pavlok, is a little magical haptic feedback wearable that helps train habits, improve athletic performance, and train learning. Know more about Maneesh and Pavlok here (pavlok.com). I had a great time talking with Maneesh...the dude has done a lot, to say the least. It's clear that his passion lies in hacking well established systems that few people attempt to hack themselves or even think of hacking. Education, credit cards, music, fitness, habits...he seems to have a hack for it all. Maneesh is definitely the epitome of an unconventional thinker and doer...you'll also love his stories and experiences. Heck, I looked up his youtube channel and there was a video of him and Tim Ferriss slapping each other. Haha. We talk about: Maneesh became a famous DJ in Berlin in 3 months Hiring people from Craigslist to slap you when you get distracted from your work How to hack credit cards and get free miles Maneesh creating the Pavlok shocking wristband that tracks and eliminates bad habits. Man, I really enjoyed this conversation with Brett! I don't often share interviews of myself personally, but I thought this one was really special. This is actually part 2 in a continuing series/collaboration between Brett Veinotte of School Sucks Podcast: The END of Public Education, and myself. Part 1 was me interviewing Brett and you can find that here. In this episode, Brett was supposed to be interviewing me for his audience, but it ended up turning into a lively conversation between the two of us. I enjoyed the heck out of it and so I decided to post it for the Successful Dropout community to enjoy as well. Brett is such an awesome dude. We talk about everything from religion to budgeting and beyond: What does "living the dream" mean when someone says it with a scowl? Community and accountability through Christianity Shame and judgment through Christianity too The law of attraction! Self-trust: Kylon was an unenclosed child Comfort zones and glamorizing "failure" Confronting resentment towards success Are you the average of the five you spend the most time with? What does success really look like? What is the right balance of contentment and discontentment? Benefits of marriage Using a cash system for personal finance THANK YOU! ...Aaaaaand yet again another resurrected episode. To those of you who have been expecting new content on Fridays, it's coming back, I promise! Things have just been a little crazy in my world lately and so it works well for me to re-purpose some of my old content from a year ago that didn't get many downloads to begin with. BUT, this particular subject, talking with your parents about opting or dropping out, has been a question I still get often. So here is the answer and the strategy once again for everyone to hear! When Andrew Schneck was in college, he broke up with girls to spend more time in the library studying finance and long term investing. His interest in this led him to study more than half of the 3000 public companies in the US, attend shareholder meetings, and he even got in touch with a few billionaires. This activity put him on the map at his school as a hard working and budding entrepreneur. It wasn’t long until a college buddy’s father invited Andrew to join him in building a healthcare business. In 2016 Andrew went from 0-100 quickly as the healthcare business grew. It was really a pleasure to have Andrew on the show since we have been friends on social media for a long time now. He is very active in the Successful Dropout community, Facebook group, and in entrepreneurial circles as well. Love what he is doing to solve a huge problem through entrepreneurship! In this episode we: Talk about the importance of relationships with close friends with whom you can go deep with, wrestle with tough questions, and call each other out. Talk about some tough periods in Andrew's life where he dealt with health issues that held him back. Talk about all the disparities within the healthcare system and what Andrew and his partner are doing to combat these. Talk about a ton more! My favorite quote from Andrew: "Society tells you, 'hey you're supposed to row the boat, you're supposed to row it here, you're supposed to row across the lake etc'...and then you look down and the boat is actually a skateboard and you're like, 'what the hell is going on?'" This is actually another old episode that I decided to resurrect. Again, it has too few downloads and it's such an important concept! For several months I put out content that barely anyone listened to, and now that there's actually a substantial audience I don't want people to miss some of the great content from the earlier days. I'm especially fond of this episode because it explains my reasoning behind signing off every blog post and episode with "stay hungry, stay foolish". I really believe the philosophy behind this phrase is essential to the core philosophy of what it means to be a Successful Dropout. THANK YOU! Thanks again for listening to the show! He is the creator and host of The Successful Dropout Podcast. He joins me again today to discuss his education and his entrepreneurial journey. *My apologies for the audio here guys...not sure what happened. Guess I should have gone to college for audio engineering. Dang it. ;)* Jimmy Tomzak lives to inspire. He's launched multiple creative ventures, commercialized inventions, and built a rich network of personal and professional relationships. His work has earned awards including recognition as a Crain's Detroit Business 20 in their 20's honoree, a Maker Faire Blue Ribbon, plus honors from organizations like the Elks National Foundation where he was named Alum of the Year. Jimmy has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Entrepreneur Magazine, CNN and other prominent media. His new book, "Lakeside & Tide", hit top 100 on Amazon Kindle and #1 in its category. Jimmy is an author and speaker who tells his story to audiences internationally. He recently gave the TED talk, "Living Your Best Life Now Starts Today." I loved talking with Jimmy. In this episode we chatted about what success really means to both of us, and how many people have ideas in their head of what success looks like to them without putting much thought into whether or not they will actually enjoy and be fulfilled by that idea of success. What if making a million dollars a year isn't REALLY what you want? What if everything you ever wanted in life could be achieved earning only $100,000 a year? What if instead of setting financial goals, you set lifestyle goals? How much free time do you want to have? What kind of work do you want to do? WHO do you want to spend your time with and HOW do you want to spend your time? What if your idea of success is more inspired by what society thinks than what you would ACTUALLY enjoy and find fulfilling for yourself? It's an important question to wrestle with. This is actually an older episode that I decided to resurrect. It has too few downloads and it's such an important concept! Get in the habit of just in time learning. You will be more efficient, and you will retain more knowledge since you are learning in the context of something you are genuinely curious about and working towards. Just in case learning is for recreation. As much as you can, learn things in the context of taking action. Simple as that. :) THANK YOU! Thanks again for listening to the show! Tom Szaky is the Founder and CEO of TerraCycle, one of the world’s leaders in eco-capitalism and the reuse of non-recyclable, pre and post-consumer waste. In 2002 he left Princeton University to spend all his time growing TerraCycle, which began as a two-man outfit out of his dorm room. Since then Tom and and TerraCycle have experienced great success. In 2010, TerraCycle was named the #288th fastest growing privately held company in America by Inc. Magazine and in 2016, Fortune magazine listed TerraCycle as one of “7 World-Changing Companies to Watch.”...among many other awards, publications, and successes. I didn't think I could ever get excited about garbage, but Tom's passion is contagious and his ingenuity is inspiring. One of my favorite quote from Tom (slightly paraphrased): "Entrepreneurship is a mountain of failure, and the outside - the crust of the mountain is the success, and the more you take risks and the more you inevitably fail, the more success you'll end up having. We usually only see the entrepreneur on the outside because that's what the magazines talk about, but we don't see all the failures that led to that point." Brett Veinotte has worked in education for the last 17 years, in a variety of capacities. Most recently, he was the vice president of a tutoring and educational consulting company in New Hampshire. Brett began working as a counselor and outdoor educator at a boarding school in Vermont in 2000, and was eventually promoted to lead teacher of a specialized campus. He then taught at a private day school in Manchester, Vermont from 2004 to 2006, where he designed new curricula for all classes he taught, including American History, World History, Media Ethics, Film History and a variety of mathematics courses. He completed masters level coursework in educational leadership, and the secondary education certification program at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. After leaving classroom teaching in 2006, Brett began to work exclusively as a private tutor in the greater Boston area. Much of this work was related to standardized test prep but also included providing essay writing support to college applicants, leading training sessions for prospective teachers planning to take state certification exams and serving as a liaison between parents and public schools to address student needs and parent concerns. I discovered Brett through the School Sucks Podcast and Youtube channel where he teaches thousands of people the art of self-education, critical-thinking, self-knowledge, personal growth, and a whole lot more. Loved chatting with this guy! Here are a few of the things we discussed: Thoughts on career, college and School Sucks Above the Snowflakes? the current college culture the future of higher education The student loan bubble and the "college is necessary" bubble Aesthetic diversity versus intellectual diversity The consequences of social engineering in college Live off campus! Gautam is the founder of Peeyr.com, a peer education marketplace that connects top high-school and college students to their peers for in-person tutoring sessions. He's a high-school dropout on a mission to create more opportunity within our education system and help students find their passion. Previously, he launched satus.org, a "How to Start a Startup" program for young founders and was a partner at Ankorhem, a product design agency based in Dallas. He's 19 years old. Gautam is another Successful Dropout who is changing the way we educate ourselves. I had an absolute blast chatting with him and I love the "why" behind everything he does. Everything he's built, he's built to solve a problem or challenge that he himself experienced...I think that's the essence of entrepreneurship - building creative solutions to solve problems, and the best way to do that is to solve your own problems. Here are some of the topics we cover in this episode: Can entrepreneurship be taught? Gautam cheating on a test and how it changed his life - great story! Kylon Gienger is a founder in many companies across different industries, a former Navy SEAL, and is currently hosting Successful Dropout, a podcast about how successful entrepreneurs have gained more from dropping out than from staying in school.
Kylon Gienger is a serial entrepreneur and host of The Successful Dropout Podcast (listen to my interview here). Kylon left college to become a youth pastor (we had a great conversation on theology before the recording was rolling...I cover it in the intro briefly) and eventually launched several businesses and has one exit under his belt. Kylon has since interviewed nearly 50 successful dropouts, looking to dissect what makes these people -- rarely credential-praisers or those impressed with fancy titles -- tick compared to other high-performing people.
Kylon Gienger is the founder and host of Successful Dropout- a podcast where he interviews successful entrepreneurs who dropped out of school. A college dropout himself, Kylon has also founded and co-founded multiple companies in the construction, fitness, food service, and online education industries. He is passionate about building great business, building beyond business, and helping others to do the same.
Kylon Gienger took a $1000 investment and turned it into multiple employees at the age of 23. Some mistakes in that business led to near bankruptcy. He openly shares that experience in full detail. He made a come-back with more clarity, focus, resilience, and wisdom. Through owning multiple businesses, Kylon speaks about the roller coaster ride of success and struggle as an entrepreneur. His Podcast, Successful Dropout, is to change the perception of dropouts. These are self-directed, successful learners who don’t thrive in the traditional educational system . Outliers. Innovators. Rebels. People who dare to dream and live by that dream.
