Episode 44 - New Level, New Devil with Lucy Bartholomew  We recently caught up with Lucy, an athlete we can only describe as on a whole another level!   She ran her first race, the Surf Coast Century 100k, alongside her father, and after that success kept coming and in 2017 she raced in fifteen ultras and was the first place female in eight of them. After she triumphed at Western States, she gained 50,000 followers on her instagram which gave her the opportunity to share her journey. This week's episode is a super inspiring and lively conversation with Brisbane based, ultra distance trail runner, Meagan Brown. If you haven't listened to her husband's episode, you can check out Sammy's interview in Episode 20 and compare tales! Meagan's energy is magnetic! She shares with us her journey from being someone who didn't even really like running initially, albeit competed in all the sports growing up, to someone who has now been running for ten years, competitively. Meagan talks to us about a pivotal moment in her life - a spiritual experience she enjoyed while hiking Kokoda Track in Papa New Guinea at a junction in life - which gave her new found independence and confidence and inspired her to seek out more adventure outdoors. This evolved from ticking off trails on a map of her local National Park to completing the Oxfam Trailwalker 100km. After reading Scott Jurek's Eat and Run she was inspired to try solo events and tackled the Surf Coast Century 100km, finding she preferred this solo style of racing. Meagan has since completed numerous ultramarathons and road marathons and her life has taken a fantastic course since her first half marathon (Gold Coast Marathon) just for fitness, where she walked from the 18km mark, to now being a regular on the trail podium both in South East Queensland and beyond. We hear her awesome story of the massive contrast between her first 75km Buffalo Stampede - a sky run with 4500m vert. (which she signed up for not understanding “vert”) and ended up crying on the side of a mountain; chasing cut offs and coming through the finish as they were deflating the Finish arch; to her strong victory at this same event last year.  Excitingly, after five lottery entries for the iconic Western States Endurance Run, Meagan has landed a place on the start line this year and we can't wait to hear how she goes in her first miler in the USA! Although she's only 25, Lucy Bartholomew has been competing in ultras for a decade.  She ran her first, the Surf Coast Century 100k, alongside her father, and the successes kept coming. In 2017 she raced in fifteen ultras and was the first place female in eight of them.  The following year she ran her first 100 mile race, Western States, and finished third in the women's race.  All of those medals came at a cost, however, and for a time she lost her love of running.  Today she talks about how she regained her joy in the sport and now appreciates it more fully than she ever did before. “People asked what happened when the numbers went up, but when the numbers were so low that I was clearly unwell, no one asked any questions. In fact I was put on a pedestal.” Lucy participated in a project at a heart institute in 2018, the year she triumphed at Western States.  Her numbers were incredibly low - body fat under 12% and a heart rate so slow that it didn't register on the lab's equipment. The doctors were amazed and impressed; it was “like a hall of fame moment,” she recalls. But those levels were impossible to maintain, and when she went back a year later, the numbers were all higher.  She was stronger and healthier, but the reaction was, “oh, you're out of that elite athlete percentile and you're like, normal, God forbid.” “ I remember sitting there,” she says, “and just being like, my photo's just gone off the wall of fame, and I'm now this normal human, which is just not good enough for their standards.” “Overnight I gained 50,000 followers on Instagram.  So 50,000 people started following me and they started following a version of Lucy that was not sustainable.” After Lucy crossed the Western States' finish line in 2018, she suddenly had tens of thousands of new followers, who only knew her at her thinnest.  When she gained weight after the race, people's comments made her start to question herself. “It just puts a grain of sand into your mind, just kind of like, am I doing everything wrong?”  By the end of 2019, that grain of sand had become a sandcastle. “I think that I had lost the race of Western States before I had even begun.” Running Western States in 2018 had been a joyful experience. She remembers an article that was written about her, saying how super-stoked she was. “And I was,” she says, “I was just like, oh my God, I can't believe I'm in this position. I didn't come here to lead the race. I'm in front of Courtney freaking Dauwalter, like what is going on?”  When she ran it again the next year, everything had changed.  She was in the worst headspace of her life, and says, ”if I have one regret in my running career - I don't use the word regret - but I disrespected that race. I ran it, but I didn't love it. I despised the fact that I was out there. I endured it, which the previous year, I enjoyed it, not endured.” She hadn't looked at her watch for the first nine hours of the 2018 race  because she was loving it so much.  But in 2019, she says, “I looked at my watch for the first time probably a mile in and went, ‘is that all we've done?'”   “I don't love this anymore, and I've always said that I would stop the moment that I outrun my love for running.” In retrospect, she knew that she should have rested after the 2018 Western States, but she kept racing.  “Then the Christmas season I chilled out a little bit,” she says, “had my three days off for the year, God forbid.”  She resumed her schedule of back-to-back ultras in the new year.  Thinking about her racing calendar, she says, “I'm like, you are an absolute goose, Lucy. Who do you think you are, standing on all those start lines and doing that to your body?” “I learned from Western States that I won't stand on the start line if my head and heart aren't in it.”  Lucy had raced the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) seven times and loved it, but when she arrived in Chamonix in 2019, she says, “I was like, I really just want to sit at a cafe and chill out, and sit in the river and do something else.  I just want to get the chairlift up. Like, do we have to run?” “To be a great runner, you have to have the ability to run but then also to be able to cheer on others.” She dropped out of the UTMB, but instead of sulking because “this was just turning into the absolute crumble of the year,” she decided to support the people who were racing.  She explains that when she was younger and would spectate as her dad raced, “I started to realize that you can be on the sideline and you can just be miserable about the fact that you're not in the race or you can be on the sideline and you can make people's day.”  She left Chamonix feeling proud that she'd respected herself enough to pull out of the race, and happy that “I was able to still be a part of the sport that I love, because whilst I wasn't loving the act of running, I love the philosophy and the community of running, and that's more important to me than any race ever.” “It was just the most beautiful experience that put me in a position where it was kind of like, this is what matters.” The lockdowns in Australia during the Covid-19 pandemic gave Lucy an opportunity to reset.  After only being allowed one hour of running a day, 5 km from her house, she was ready for a challenge. She and two friends decided to run the extremely difficult Larapinta Trail in the Northern Territory of Australia.  There were times on the trail that were “really, really tough,” but at the end, when the community came out for the finish, she realized that “this is why I love this sport and this is what I want to do. You would be hard pressed to find someone in the ultra running & trail community who doesn't know Lucy Bartholomew. She's been a 'rule bender' since she entered the ultra arena at the age of 15 when she took part in the Surf Coast Century 100km event. Running alongside her ultra running Dad, she took his instructions and ran with a smile on her face ear-to-ear in an attempt to dismantle the controversy that a minor (under the age of 18) was too young to be racing an endurance event. Fast forward 9 years - Lucy is a professional ultra athlete sponsored by Salomon Australia, Suunto, SPRING energy and Le Bent. She travels the globe racing and facilitating running workshops and retreats. In 2017, Lucy had her breakout year when she ran 15 events and was the first female in 8 of them. In 2018 with single minded focus she pushed her personal boundaries and placed third in the highly contested Western States 100 in California, her 100 mile debut. With reflection and time, Lucy now see's this result in a more holistic perspective. Although proud of what she achieved, Lucy discusses the toll she placed on her body, mind and spirit to achieve that result. That intensity was not sustainable and she is still working through the consequences of it. We discuss the challenges and pressures of the sport, in addition to the freedom and depth of experience it has given her. Lucy's candour is refreshing. We discuss LOTS in this conversation including: her rise onto the international racing arena. The internal and external turmoil of neglecting recovery and the long term toll endurance racing can have if you are not mindful & healthy. Her growth mindset for new experiences ~ inside and beyond running. How she processes both public scrutiny and praise. Her love of plant based food and for sharing her learnings with her community. In my eyes Lucy is far more than an ultra runner ~ she is an entrepreneur who designs and sells Team Lucy kit; she is an advocate for the environment and will soon be a self published author of a recipe book.... and she's only just getting started! The dulcet tones of Hamish Beaumont are welcomed into the Down the Track studio once again to talk all things athletics. Episode 26 leads off with a summary of the three Australian Championships conducted on Sunday 15th September - the Marathon in Sydney, the Road Racing in Adelaide and Mountain Running in Brisbane. Some great performances once again from our Victorian contingent with Lisa Weightman (Road) and Simone Brick (Mountains) being crowned Australian Champions. XCR’19 came to an exciting conclusion with Rd.10 at the Tan Track. St Stephens Harriers maintained their year long consistency to take out the Men’s Premier Division, while we had to wait until the final runners crossed the line in the Women’s race to award the Collingwood Harriers their first Premier Division team title. We also cover the huge battle in Men’s Division 2 between APS United and the Bendigo Region. With the INEOS Sub 2 challenge not far away, Kenya’s Geoffrey Kamworor grabbed his moment of glory in the lead up by establishing a new World’s best time for the Half Marathon in Copenhagen. Hamish and Tim contemplate a Kamworor v Eliud Kipchopge showdown over the marathon distance. Ash Watson did some record breaking of his own, this time over the trails and beaches of the Surf Coast where he won the 100km event in under 8hrs. With AV Shield not far away, discussion turns to the new AVSL concept and how it will hopefully change up team based track and field athletics across Victoria. Some additional athletes have been added to the Australian team bound for Doha and we also look forward to the Victorian Trail Running Championships and Melbourne Marathon Festival. Running & racing is a way of life for Chris and his wife Greta who run the family friendly Rejoov Runners from Sydney's Centennial Park. Chris has a long affinity with many of Sydney's iconic running events. He first completed Sydney's City to Surf when he was just 9 years old, running 63mins. In 1987 at the age of 13, he ran 53mins and he has competed in every single City to Surf since (over 30 of them) with a PB of 45:44, he has run 25 consecutively under 49mins! Chris's first marathon was the 1993 Melbourne race. We're not sure why he was so keen to start running marathons at the age of 18, but he loved it and was happy to finish in a 3:13.26. Chris has gone on to compete in over 30 marathons including Berlin, Chicago, Rotterdam, London, Tokyo, New York and local ones - Sydney, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Melbourne & Canberra with a PB of 2:29:44 coming in 2002 in one of his four Berlin finishes. All his subsequent marathon times since debut have been under 3hrs. Chris has managed to maintain his longevity with running via a balanced approach to life and to the sport. At 45yrs, he continues to compete across a wide spectrum of events. Whether it's a 5000m track time trial, 10km road race, half marathon or marathon, or a 100km trail or road race. The Outback is a large expanse of rough, barren desert that can cause serious problems when exposed day after day to shadeless, intense heat. With a July 2019 start date, we're taking advantage of the cooler, drier months to make the crossing, avoiding extreme temperatures and washed-out roads. While there is a more direct route connecting Darwin to Adelaide via the Stuart Highway, we've chosen to avoid the more trafficked paved routes in favor of dirt roads. This approach keeps us away from potential dangers like increased traffic, while also introducing the logistical difficulty of scant resupply options and many hundreds of miles without services. More intriguing, yes. More difficult, most definitely. It's worth noting that we - Katie and Henley - are in no way professionals. Professional goofballs, that's about it! We're just audacious dreamers with a healthy dose of optimism that things will work out and a desire to push ourselves. That said, we are experienced outdoors-people with several thousand miles of solo and tandem travel of this nature, and we have inspired heads on our shoulders. We understand the risks of the project and are responsible and intelligent enough to figure it all out with passion and humility. Pat Farmer, best known as the only man who has run continuously from the North Pole to the South Pole, is a multiple world record holder for endurance running. He has also run around and across Australia, New Zealand, India, Vietnam and North America. Pat served 8 years as a Member of Australia's Parliament, with 3 years as Parliamentary Secretary for Education, Science and Training. Winner of ‘Achiever of the Year' (2000), awarded by Prime Minister John Howard and National Geographic's Adventurer of the Year (2012), Pat has raised millions of dollars for causes during his 30 year running career, including Lifeline, Cancer Council, Australian Red Cross, Diabetes Australia and the Nani Khali Foundation for education of India's girl child. 1999 - Pat established the fastest around-Australia record of continuous running in 191 days and 10 minutes (around 6 months) over 14,662.4km during his Centenary of Federation run. The brain limits our endurance capacity before our body needs to physically slow down, essentially the brain is wired to keep us safe, this consequently limits our potential. Rory shares psychological skills you can train and develop into your daily routine to improve your overall performance.
