Menopause is a confusing, sometimes isolating time. We have more information than ever, but can still feel in the dark about exactly what's going on and what we should or maybe shouldn't be doing about it. To help, Feisty Menopause and Hit Play Not Pause host Selene Yeager have created an 8 week course called Navigate Menopause that guides women through menopause physiology, hormonal and other therapies, and the exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle strategies that can help smooth the transition, as well as help them create a plan of action for this time of life. Hundreds of women have taken the course since we launched earlier this year, and they've shared some moving stories worth sharing. So this week we do just that: We sit down with four women from our latest cohorts to hear about the obstacles they've encountered in their menopause transition and discuss the blueprint they've created for their future.Abby Huggins Mowinski, 49, is a veterinarian, professor, and mother of two teenage sons. She's an avid triathlete and trail runner, and loves all outdoor activities. She volunteers with Swim Across America, Scouts, as a high school assistant cross country coach.DeAnn Barlow, 53, is an E-Commerce Merchandising Specialist who took up gravel cycling at age 47 and has been hooked ever since. She documents her menopause journey on her substack: www.aventyr.ccIris McCormack, 53, is a competitive golfer, who also runs, strength trains, hikes, and walks her dogs daily. She is also a knitter, bread baker, and active mom to an athletic teenage daughter and son. Heather Benning, 51, is a lifelong athlete who after nearly two decades of coaching collegiate soccer and teaching, transitioned into the role of commissioner for a DIII athletic conference. She is currently an avid road and trail runner and enjoys CrossFit and gravel cycling. You can sign up for Navigate Menopause at feistymenopause.com/navigate-menopauseSubscribe to the Feisty 40+ newsletter: https://feistymedia.ac-page.com/feisty-40-sign-up-page Feisty Menopause Performance Retreat: Join us from November 21st-23rd, 2024 https://www.feistymenopause.com/retreat Join the FREE Women's Sports Fan Club: fanclub.feisty.co Follow Us on Instagram:Feisty Menopause: @feistymenopause Hit Play Not Pause Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/807943973376099 Join Level Up:https://www.feistymenopause.com/monthly-membership-1 Support our Partners:Previnex: Get 15% off your first order with code HITPLAY at https://www.previnex.com/ Midi Health: You Deserve to Feel Great. Craig Beardsley is a former World Record holder in the 200 Fly. He qualified for the 1980 Olympics but didn't get to compete due to President Jimmy Carter's boycott. Beardsley set the World Record of 1:58.21 in the 200- meter butterfly on July 30, 1980, one week after the Olympic Games—a time that was over a second faster than Soviet swimmer Sergey Fesenko‘s gold medal time in the 1980 Olympic finals. After the United States–led boycott of the Moscow Olympics, Beardsley continued to train. He held both the American and World Records from 1980 to 1983. Swimming World Magazine named Beardsley its American Male Swimmer of the Year in 1981. He was a two-time NCAA champion in the 200 Fly and was an 8x All-American honors while swimming for Randy Reese and the Florida Gators. After his swimming career was over, Craig got introduced to Swim Across America and has been involved for nearly 3 decades raising money for cancer research. Craig was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in October of 2022 along with Jon Sieben, another former 200 Fly World Record holder. Today is Giving Tuesday. Matt Vossler Co-Founder 'Swim Across America' joins me to celebrate 35 years of making waves fighting cancer. And we're talkin big kahuna waves! This year there will be 24 events across the country expected to raise 10M which will bring the total dollars raised by this charity for cancer research rockstars close to 120M! Matt says, it's been incredibly impactful and effective fund raising. Swim Across America is a national organization with 24 open water swims from Boston Harbor to under the Golden Gate Bridge, and more than 100 pool swim fundraisers across the country. It's roots are firmly anchored in Connecticut and along the shores of Long Island Sound. The 16th annual Swim Across America Fairfield County open water swim is scheduled for Saturday, June 25, 2022. Matt Vossler is from Darien, CT. and he and his lifelong friend and college roommate Jeff Keith, who lost part of his leg to bone cancer as a teen, founded Swim Across America in 1987. These two guys along with their other buddy Hugh Curran, graduated college, put their careers on hold, and physically 'ran' clear across the country fundraising for cancer. The 'swim' version of their efforts was only sparked when they got to the California Coast and ran out of 'land' Matt said. 'Swim Across America' didn't exactly start out as smooth sailing. Matt shared that at their very first event in 1987 on the Long Island Sound in NY during a fundraising swim from Port Jefferson to Fairfeld Beach, their boat actually sank. OMG. If that didnt stop them...it didn't. Swim Across America is built on a fundamental value that money raised in a community, stays in that community. This value creates a grassroots community feel for each of our charity swims,” said Matt Vossler. “Each charity swim is partnered with an academic or research hospital within the community that serves as the beneficiary. Stamford-based Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy is the local beneficiary in Fairfield County, CT. What isn't limited to geography is the innovation and collaboration to fighting cancer. Swim Across America has already granted $100M and been a major funder in the advancement of immunotherapy, personalized medicine, gene sequencing, detection and patient programs such as adolescent and youth survivorship.” ********************************** On Saturday, April 23rd, Elizabeth Beisel, a four-time Olympic gold and bronze medalist, 2016 Team USA captain, and world record holder for the first woman to successfully swim from mainland Rhode Island to Block Island, along with Craig Beardsley, a world record holder in the 200-meter butterfly and a former member of the U.S. Olympic Swim Team, will be visiting the Darien, CT YMCA. They will hold a swim clinic with the Darien Y's Piranha swim team from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and then participate in a Meet-and-Greet with the public from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Meet-and-Greet is free and open to the public. Something tells me after you listen to this podcast conversation with Swim Across America Co-Founder Matt Vossler, you'll want to jump in and help. Incredibly inspiring.
In this episode of InsideOut, we chat with Rob Butcher, President and CEO of Swim Across America. Rob and Mike reflect on how swimming was pivotal in the development of their careers and passions, and how we are using those lessons to impact healthcare today.
You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about news, the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Rhode Island native, Marissa Castelli is a retired American pair skater. With her skating partner, Mervin Tran, she was the 2017 U.S. national silver medalist. With her former partner, Simon Shnapir, she was the 2013 Four Continents bronze medalist, the 2009 World Junior bronze medalist, and a two-time U.S. national champion. The pair won a bronze medal in the team event at the 2014 Winter Olympics. Now, we turn our feature story…. Olympic medalist Elizabeth Beisel became the first woman to swim from the Rhode Island mainland to Block Island on Saturday, completing the grueling 10.4-mile route to raise money for cancer research in memory of her late father. Beisel, who competed in three Olympics and won silver and bronze medals at the 2012 London Games, reached the northern tip of the popular vacation spot in just under 5 1/2 hours. It was easily longer than any swim in the 29-year-old's competitive career in the pool. Beisel has never taken part in an open-water race, but she followed marathon swimming rules which required her to cover the entire distance without stopping to rest or receiving any assistance from her support boats. Beisel said: “I just wish my dad was here, honestly. I know that he's here in spirit. Everybody who has fought cancer and who's beat cancer, this is for them.” Beisel decided to start training for the long swim after her father, Ted, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer late last year. He died July 1st. Her mother, Joan, was waiting with a towel and a hug when she emerged from the water at Block Island. As a native of Rhode Island, she picked the island as her goal, saying it was one of her family's favorite places to visit when she was growing up. Beisel was further inspired to complete a route that had been done previously by two men, but never a woman. Beisel has raised some $133,000 for cancer research through her partnership with Swim Across America. She had planned to hit the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday, but high winds and choppy seas prompted her to push it back to the weekend. Conditions were nearly perfect on Saturday, with calm water and partly cloudy skies. Beisel left us with an inspirational note: “Hopefully, everyone who saw me do this today can be inspired to do something they don't think they can do.” Stay up to date on this story at westerlysun.com There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. Today's Job posting comes from Cargill in Westerly. They're looking for shipping and receiving associates. You'll be responsible for working in a fast paced environment packing meat products. Pay is up $20.00 per hour. If you're interested and think you'd be a good fit for the role you can apply using the link in our episode description. https://www.indeed.com/jobs?l=Westerly%2C%20RI&mna=5&aceid&gclid=Cj0KCQjwpf2IBhDkARIsAGVo0D2S3gEb-328GyRpBuTTeeKPdn3-klOh0KYAsfete6MEZmI5S4qTg-4aAnQkEALw_wcB&vjk=740518464e480bd4 Today we're remembering the life of Claudia Ann DeBernardo, of Wyoming, who went home to Heaven last Wednesday. Born in Providence, she was the loving wife of the late "Pat" DeBernardo for 51 years. Claudia was a 1965 graduate of Pilgrim High School and received her bachelor's degree from the University of Rhode Island. Claudia served as a Registered Nurse for fifteen years in the Westerly School System before her retirement. Her caring nature made her the perfect nurse, daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother. Claudia loved being a school Nurse and Teacher for the Westerly School System. She took great pride in caring for the children at State Street and Tower Street schools. Upon retirement, Claudia enjoyed traveling, Mahjong, and playing Bingo at the Westerly Senior Center. She is survived by her loving daughters, her beloved grandson, four nephews, one niece, and a full and beautiful extended family. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate Claudia's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! Also, remember to check out our sponsor Perennial, Daily Gut & Brain, available at the CVS on Main St. in Wakefield! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Charlotte is host and home to some pretty well-known cancer-fighting fundraisers -- like 24 Hours of Booty, the Isabella Santos 5K, Pink to Drink, and others. But few attract Olympians alongside the locals like Swim Across America, and that's far from its only success story. The event returns to the Lake Norman YMCA for the 2nd year this fall. Swim Across America's Rob Butcher is our guest on The BrandBuilders Podcast with The Dunstan Group.
Swimmers around the country are having a huge impact in the fight against cancer. With funds raised from charity swims, Swim Across America (SAA) funded the clinical trial that led to FDA approval of Keytruda, an immunotherapy used against several types of cancer. In this episode, I talked to the two doctors in the San Francisco Bay Area whose programs benefit from the local Swim Across America event. Dr. Julie Saba leads a research lab looking into the causes of two childhood cancers in hopes of finding new treatments.Dr. Rob Goldsby helps survivors of childhood cancer deal with the late effects of their cancer and its treatment, which even when successful, often results in new risks later in life.Rob Butcher, the CEO of Swim Across America, explained their model, the impact it is having and how they have been so successful.Craig Beardsley, Director of Partnerships for SAA shared the interesting and inspiring history of the organization.
Instead of the usual stories of people whose lives were changed by swimming, this month I’m sharing the story of swimmers who changing the lives of others. Swim Across America hosts charity open water swims in 20 cities across the US (as well as several pool swims). The money raised by those events goes to support cancer research and clinical trials in those cities.I had the privilege of speaking with a handful of Olympians who donate their time to support the swim in San Francisco Bay. Once you hear their stories, you’ll be ready to dive in.

Walking through the double doors to the outdoor pool at Meadowbrook in Baltimore, I remember thinking, “Wow, that’s incredible,” as I watched a woman effortlessly swim laps in a 50-meter lane. At the time, I barely knew how to put on a swim cap, and desperately wanted to be able to swim 25 meters without having to stop constantly to breathe. “There’s no way I could swim 50 meters,” I thought, as I watched her flip and kick off the wall. Rather than concern myself with being able to swim 50 meters, I refocused on strengthening the skills I needed to finish 25 meters without stopping. It wasn’t pretty, but a couple of weeks later, I completed 25 meters without stopping. “Do it again,” Marci, my coach insisted, while I pleaded for just 30 more seconds of rest. “3-2-1… Go,” she insisted. And I went—and I went—and I went, each time decreasing my rest, increasing my distance, or both. Just eight weeks later, I found myself gasping for air as I completed my first 50-meter swim. It was, again, not pretty. Visions of drowning made it impossible to focus, and I wound up doing a mixed-up version of the doggie paddle and breast stroke as I heard Marci’s voice, “You got this, Misti, keep it going.” In that moment, I figured she must have known something I didn’t, so I claimed her belief in me as my own. Aching to improve, I did every assignment she gave me. A couple of weeks later, I found myself back in the 50-meter lane with Marci barking orders and giving instructions to improve my stroke. I was (and still am) far from looking (or feeling) effortless in the water, but I did just complete a 4,800-meter swim as part of my training for the 5-mile open water swim for Swim Across America. Last year, I went for 3&3. I raised $3K and swam 3 miles. Completing that challenge inspired me to go for 5&5 this year. In fact, looking back, completing that first 25 meters without stopping to breathe inspired me to go for 50 meters, which inspired me to go 50 meters without stopping, and so on. A year ago, I didn’t think I would ever be able to swim 50 meters without stopping. Today, I have no idea if I’ll be able to complete the 5-mile open water swim on September 20th within the time limit, but I’m starting to believe that anything is possible. As I reflect on this journey, I’ve come to discover a few of the key components to achievement: 1. You don’t have to be inspired to start, but you have to start to be inspired. The only reason I decided to learn how to swim was because a good friend suggested it might help my hip pain. The rest came later. 2. Set small goals, reach them, and then decide what you’re inspired to do next. A good friend of mine recently launched an awesome online summit, where he shared dozens of interviews with highly successful experts. A week or so post-launch, he was beating himself up for only selling X amount of recordings. “I planned to sell X (very big number) of recordings and increase my list by X (another very big number),” he said. As a result, he could not appreciate his accomplishment. Set yourself up for success—and joy—by setting a goal that will stretch but not break you. 3. Allow yourself to be pulled by what inspires you, rather than pushed by your fear. Just as marketers use fear to motivate purchases (don’t get fat, buy these rice crackers), we naturally use fear to drive us to get stuff done. While I’m not suggesting that fear is a bad motivator, I am saying that inspiration is far more joyful. It’s fun to make progress toward the goals that inspire you. 4. Find a coach/mentor. There is no way I could have completed even 25 meters without Marci, much less 5 miles. We all need someone to help create a plan, work out the kinks, and cheer us on. Recently, I hired a coach to help me create a plan for improving my speaking skills for this same reason. If you care deeply about improving, find someone who can help you see what you cannot. 5. Keep going, even if you can’t see. On the swim portion of the Iron Girl (my first triathlon) in Columbia, Maryland, the sun was low on the horizon, right in our eyes, making it impossible to see where we were going, or when to turn. It was frustrating, and I found myself with plenty of excuses to stop. That’s when I heard myself say, “You don’t have to see to keep moving forward.” It became the mantra that got me through that swim. Since then, I’ve realized it’s applicable to nearly every area of our lives. Too often, we get caught up in needing all the instructions—the map, as Seth Godin often says—before we venture forth. Big achievements start with small feats. As Zig Ziglar used to say, “You can eat an elephant, one bite at a time.” Don’t wait to be inspired to challenge yourself. Go out and challenge yourself, and watch as you become inspired. Where will you end up after a few bites? Here’s to Your Greatness, Misti Burmeister
Nobody reaches greatness by himself or herself, and nothing great is ever achieved in isolation. If we want to go for greatness, we must ask for the support we need. The best leaders on the planet understand that they need their team to reach their goals, and so they ask for help and provide the opportunity for others to step up. Until this afternoon, I thought I was pretty good at asking for help. “You’ve done a great job asking for donations for Swim Across America,” Jane, my coach, said to me, “But have you asked your fans to help you get the word out about your new speech?” She nailed me when she followed that up with, “It’s easier to make the ask when the outcome doesn’t directly benefit you.” Of course, this provided some great fodder for journaling and self-reflection this evening. Considering how much I coach others to ask for help, it’s my turn to step up and ask for your help. My newest keynote speech, Provoke Ability: How to skillfully leverage the talent on your team, has gotten some great reviews. I would like to talk to other leaders/executives – if you know anyone who could benefit from hearing this message, please have them email me directly at: mb@measurablegreatness.com Thank you! Here’s to Your Greatness, Misti Burmeister P.S. Yes, it made me uncomfortable to ask for your help, but I suppose this type of discomfort is where greatness lies.
