If the global pandemic has taught us anything, it's that young people in this world are a lot more adaptable than we give them credit for. Our students want to learn. However when forced to learn from home for weeks or months at a time,  vulnerability can surface in many ways—the most common of which is disengagement. Rather than responding with frustration, this is where teachers need to be understanding and  incorporate a wider range of learning techniques. In this episode, Principal, Ms Jacinda Euler, speaks to passionate Technologies Teacher, Ms Nisha Swanston, about the challenges of remote teaching, and resisting the ‘chalk and talk' which can often take over Zoom lessons.

Tom Loud dropped out of high school because he didn’t connect with his teachers. Somehow, he connected with books though and became a high school and college graduate. Now, Tom is a 10-year classroom veteran who is working to make his classroom (and help others) connect with kids in new ways. Today we’ll talk about unleashing the potential in every child. And yes, you’ll hear birds chirping, but that is ok! www.coolcatteacher.com/e509 Urkund: Today’s Sponsor Urkund is great as a plagiarism prevention tool and connects with most common Learning Management Systems like Google Classroom, Moodle, and Canvas or as a stand-alone web tool or by email. Students just turn in work. Then, the teacher has the paper analyzed by Urkund. The Urkund system is highly accurate, cost-effective, and even better, doesn’t sell licenses to students or others. Just teachers can use the power of Urkund. So, if you use another text similarity detection tool, or if you haven’t used one yet, now is the time to start your free trial at www.coolcatteacher.com/detect  and learn more about Urkund today.   From the 10-Minute Teacher Vault This is another one of the all-time-top shows of the 10 Minute Teacher. This show with Tom Loud aired in September 2017 but because iTunes only keeps 297 of the most recent shows, we wanted to take the summer opportunity to share the most inspirational shows from the 10 Minute Teacher podcast. I hope you enjoy! Tom Loud - Bio As Submitted Tom Loud is a first-grade teacher at Middlesettlements Elementary in Tennessee. He also serves as a Technology Teacher Leader at Middlesettlements and was recently recognized as Technology Teacher of the year along with Innovative Teacher of the Year by his district. Dr. Andy Bruening, Director of Bridge Programs at PAST Foundation, and Tyler Hertenstein, Design Pathway Instructor and Technology Teacher at Metro Early College High School, join us to unbox the role of robotics, design thinking, and engineering in education today. Both Andy and Tyler have seen first-hand the success of integrating robotics into the classroom and after-school clubs, and what happens when you get really creative with these hands-on opportunities to learn. We unbox: Starting and overseeing the Metrobots, Metro's First Robotics Competition Team Why schools should invest in robotics teams The difference between being mentor-led and mentor-guided (and why the Metrobots is student-led) Why Andy and Tyler view their primary role as coaching soft skills, rather than engineering The PAST Foundation’s Center of Robotics Innovation (CORI) The time and effort that goes into a robotics team, and why it’s not “just for the nerds” Robotics competition is “the sport of the minds” Tyler’s college robotics football team would get “smoked” by anything his kids are currently coming up with Changing the dynamic of who’s participating in robotics How teachers and students who have an interest in robotics can spearhead programs like these in their own schools Why these programs needs good mentors that stick around, and those mentors don’t need to be engineers Resources: Check out the Metrobots in action: https://www.3324metrobots.org/ Learn more about PAST’s Bridge Programs: https://www.pastfoundation.org/bridge-programs Start A FIRST Robotics Team: https://www.pastfoundation.org/start-a-first-robotics-team Learn more about Metro: https://www.themetroschool.org/ Connect with Andy on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andy-bruening-6925049b/ Connect with Tyler on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tyler-hertenstein/ Learning Unboxed is produced in part by Crate Media Recorded by Eric French at (http://wosu.org/) in Columbus, Ohio
