We are in the last month of 2020, so let’s make it count! This December, “2 Barstools and a Knife” will focus on a mixed bag of discussion subjects - from restaurants, to holiday gift ideas, to what wine/spirit to pair with your favorite meal. Professor Nathan Dodge, Chef John Noble Masi, and Chef Jeremy Houghton jumped right in with a conversation with restaurateur, Memphis Garrett. If you watched “Big Brother All-Stars” on CBS, that name might sound familiar. Memphis starred on seasons 10 & 20 of the hit reality show, but don’t call him a reality star. Memphis prefers restaurateur or entrepreneur, and he was gracious enough to talk with us about his past, current, and future projects. We talk to Memphis about his journey from his childhood sitting at the end of a bar, to his education at FSU’s Dedman College of Hospitality, to opening restaurants and hotel concepts for SBE in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, & Miami, and finally settling in Fort Lauderdale with Memphis Staffing and his other projects. Memphis has a lot to be proud of, and he understands what it is like to realize when something isn’t working and when to get out.Memphis had some great points, including the fact that there is nothing wrong with starting from the bottom, and without completing a consistent analysis of your sales and costs, you will never know how your business is really doing. We look forward to seeing more concepts from Memphis in the future, and the return of Professor Brian Connors next week.New shows every Friday.Support the show (http://Hospitality.fiu.edu)

Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince have been dropping jaws around the world for well over a decade now, with their blend of guitar-shredding, Plant-belting, synthesizer-concocting, heart-wrenching rock'n'roll - with five studio albums and a slew of EPs and singles to their name. Jack White fans (who weren't already familiar with the band) got to know Alison Mosshart as lead singer of The Dead Weather, as well as through a host of collaborations between The Kills and the Third Man world ever since. Our mystery guest agreed to speak with us out of character, so long as we promised to disguise their voice. The episode is a funny but also quite penetrating conversation between @NMarxism and Money on the Left’s Maxximilian Seijo (@MaxSeijo). Editable Online Notes HERE Sometimes it's dangerous to be an outsider. Turn to Ruth 1 This December we're unpacking the surprising truth, that the message of Christmas is not for the holy & the whole, but for schemers, sinners, outsiders, and the broken. In Other Words, the message of Christmas is for people just like me and you. We're discovering that by looking at four characters in the genealogy of Jesus. Four women who stick out like a sore thumb, because women weren't usually included in genealogies of that day. Tamar -- the message of Christmas is for schemers Rahab -- the message of Christmas is for sinners This morning we'll see that the message of Christmas isn't for the holy and the whole, but for outsiders like Ruth, and like you and me. Two Questions:   1) The Pain of Rejection Read vv. 1-5 Ruth was an outcast because she was a Moabite Genesis 19:20-27 Sodom and Gomorrah have been destroyed Abraham’s nephew Lot has been rescued His wife is turned into a pillar of salt Lot and his two daughters are holed up in a cave Lot’s daughters get him drunk and sleep with him His firstborn daughter becomes pregnant and has a son named Moab Hundreds of years later (Numbers 22-24), the Israelites are wandering in the wilderness The Moabite people are afraid of them so their king Balak hires a prophet named Balaam to curse them Balaam is unable to curse Israel from the outside, so they infiltrate them from the inside Moabite women seduce Israelite men, and God’s people begin worshiping the false gods of Moab Deuteronomy‬ ‭23:3-4‬—“No Ammonite or Moabite may enter the assembly of the Lord. Even to the tenth generation, none of them may enter the assembly of the Lord forever, because they did not meet you with bread and with water on the way, when you came out of Egypt, and because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you.” Ruth 1:1 says this story happened in the days when the Judges ruled Since Boaz, one of the main characters in Ruth, is the son of Rahab who was rescued from Jericho, this has to be fairly early in the period of Judges. Perhaps shortly after the death of Joshua. Judges 3 tells us about one of the very first judges that led Israel, a man named Ehud. He was a lefty assassin who delivered the Israelites by killing a fat king named Eglon. Can anybody guess the ethnicity of King Eglon? Moabite.  In fact, Jewish rabbinic tradition says that King Eglon was Ruth’s father. Although there is nothing in the text to suggest such a connection, it may indicate common belief that Ruth’s story occurred during the years that Israel was enslaved by Moab. Ruth was an outcast because she was a Woman We live in a world of girl power and #MeToo, but Ruth lived in a day when women were often treated like property How pro-women the Bible is (including women in genealogy, story like this, etc.) Ruth was an outcast because she was Barren Hard to realize how painful this is when you live in a culture where women regularly choose a type of infertility through sterilization, birth control and abortion Ruth was an outcast because she was a Widow How we too are outcasts... “But she has a connection to God’s people by marrying Naomi’s son!” Superficial connection This is the same type of connection many people have to God Just like Ruth, we are outsiders who need redemption! 2) The Power of Relationships Hallmark movies—it’s the destination We know how this story ends, but how?!? Ruth won’t get to meet Boaz if she doesn’t go to Bethlehem and she won’t go to Bethlehem without Naomi Naomi didn’t get everything right, and neither do we But she took Ruth to the right place—for us it’s not a place but a person Hershael York teaching kid about trinity  God Uses His Flawed Instruments God Uses Providence God Uses Suffering God uses a Redeemer 3) A Picture of Redemption Two redemptions in Ruth... Of her soul Of her circumstances  Boaz the Redeemer

In the winter of 2009 the first subtlemob ‘As If It Were The Last Time’ took place. This December it’s being restaged in Bristol and London. What is a subtlemob? A subtlemob is not a flashmob, it integrates with the everyday world, so only its participants are really aware of it. There is no meeting point, only an area of the city to explore, you'll be unsure of who is and isn't taking part. It’s like walking through a film, it's experienced on headphones, but is performed by you and hundreds of strangers. Armed with only a sound file it takes you on a cinematic experience through the beauty of the everyday. A mixture of narrative, instructions and richly textured music fills your ears. Different sound files are distributed to different audience groups, so while some perform simple actions, the others hear stories about these actions, so that everywhere they look the stories come alive in the world around them. The roles swap back and forth, sometimes you’ll just be watching, sometimes you’ll be following instructions. There’s nothing embarrassing or dangerous, you’re almost just playing yourself. There is no venue, there are no ushers or staff, this performance is really just staged and owned by you. This is no requiem, this is a celebration, a chance to savour the world you live in, and to see it with fresh eyes. . . . try to remain invisible Why Now? When I wrote ‘As If It Were The Last Time’ in 2009, it was a direct response to the country I saw around me, and the things that worried me. I wanted it to be an opportunity to care, to pay attention to what we really valued, to what was around us, and to the people we shared our streets with. Smartphones were beginning to dominate the landscape, and I felt the benefits of remote digital connection risked increasing our disconnection with each other and our surroundings. There seemed to be an increasing wave of intolerance and narrow nationalism, the BNP won their first ever seats in a national election and Nick Griffin became a member of the European Parliament. We were still in the fallout of the global financial crisis and scared of swine flu. Unemployment in the UK was at its highest for a decade and with mouths gaping we read lists of MPs expenses claims. It’s now 2019, and it might be said that our country is more divided and disconnected than ever. When I read the script it feels like I could have written some of it last week. These two re-stagings will happen before and after the election on the 12th December, so maybe it’s a good time to take stock, to care, and to be open to each other. When God doesn’t just include notorious names in His family tree, but the Holy Spirit HIGHLIGHTS them, we understand something important is happening.    Turn to Matthew 1 This December we're unpacking the surprising truth, that the message of Christmas is not for the holy & the whole, but for schemers, sinners, outcasts, and the broken. In Other Words, the message of Christmas is for people just like me and you.   We're discovering that by looking at four characters in the genealogy of Jesus. Four women who stick out like a sore thumb, because women weren't usually included in genealogies of that day.   "You can pick your nose but you can't pick your relatives"  In other words, "aren't you making too much out of Jesus' genealogy? After all, we can't help who our ancestors are. Unless you're the eternal Son of God who existed before you were born as a human Everything we're about to read wasn't accidental or incidental, but intentional   Read Matthew 1:1-5 Last week we saw from the life of Tamar that the message of Christmas is for schemers. This morning we'll see that the message of Christmas isn't for the holy and the whole, but for sinners like Rahab, and like you and me. In that one word Rahab is a world of significance. In that one word Rahab we see a girl with a checkered past and a scandalous future. In that one word Rahab we just might see a picture of ourselves and our desperate need for grace. Two Questions: 1.What's So Bad About Rahab? 2.What's So Great About Grace? 1) What's SoBadAboutRahab?(Joshua 2) Moses has died and Joshua has been appointed to lead God's people from the wilderness into the Promised Land Joshua sends two spies into the city of Jericho They stay at the house of Rahab, probably an inn which, in those days would've been like a one-stop shop where you could find food, a bed, and usually a woman to sleep with While the story doesn't tell us if the spies slept with Rahab, the fact that it's her house implies that she's the proprietor of this inn and brothel. In other words, she's not just an innocent victim of her circumstances who fell into the wrong profession. She's learned to make a profit from her prostitution.   So what's so bad about Rahab?...A) Her Sin is Incredibly ScandalousThis woman Rahab is mentioned 8 times in the Bible. 5x in Joshua, once here, once in Hebrews, and once in James. 5 out of 8 times she's called Rahab the Prostitute You might think that those are just in the OT, but... 2 out of 3 of the times she's mentioned in the NT she's called a prostitute   Hebrews 11:31 -- Rahab is the only person in Hebrews 11 whose sin is remembered Noah --nothing of his drunkenness Abraham--nothing of his cowardly fear Sarah -- nothing about her bitterness, cunning plot to get an heir for Abram, mistreatment of Hagar Isaac -- nothing of his horrible parenting and lack of leadership in the home Jacob -- nothing of his deception Moses -- nothing of his murder, or his sin striking the rock Time would fail us to talk about the sins of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jepthah, David, Samuel and the prophets     Hershael York -- "While God erases the penalty of our sin, He never erases the reality of our sin." Even in heaven, we will see evidence of the reality of our sin in Jesus' scars   Imagine that we had a name tag Sunday here at PBC and I told you that we had these special nametags developed by google using a groundbreaking technology that scanned your entire internet history to know you better than you know yourself. And that once you wrote your name on it, underneath your name in indelible ink would be written your most scandalous sin. Some of you are thinking, "I'm never coming back to this church!" NOT going to do that, those nametags are too expensive we can't fit them in the budget. . . . yet :) How many of you would say, "Well I just wouldn't write my name on a nametag!" Isn't that interesting! Even if we've never committed the sin of Rahab, the truth is that all of us know that our sin is incredibly scandalous. So scandalous in fact that we'd rather our names be forgotten then our sin be remembered. Kids of John Wayne Gacy    What's so bad about Rahab is also what's so bad about us. But there's more...B) Her Sin is Especially Damaging Sometimes we talk about how "sin is sin", etc   All sin is equallydamning, but it's not equallydamaging. Hating your brother will send you to hell just as quickly as murdering him will But that doesn't mean you should just go ahead and kill your brother because murder causes greater earthly damage    Sexual sin is especially damaging to the sinner 1 Corinthians 6:15-20 -- Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes  one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is  outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit  within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.   The very example Paul gives -- the Prostitute -- is Rahab's profession! And again, it's not an occasional stumble into sexual sin. It's a committed lifestyle.   How we too have sinned against our own bodies   What's so bad about Rahab is also what's so bad about us. But there's more...   C) Her Faith is Surprisingly Sinful   The story of Rahab doesn't end with two spies staying in her house... The king of Jericho (probably more like what we would call a Mayor) hears that there are spies in his town He goes to Rahab and orders her to release the spies She hides the spies from the mayor, lies to him, and then after his cronies are gone she helps them to escape the city.   On two occasions the NT refers to this act of Rahab as evidence of saving faith: Hebrews 11:31 -- By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were  disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies. James 2:25 --  And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified  by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another  way? Isn't it interesting that Rahab's first and greatest act of faith is to tell a lie? What a contrast to some of the great acts of faith mentioned in the first few verses in Jesus' genealogy... Abraham, willing to sacrifice his son Isaac in obedience to God's command Isaac, willing to submit himself to his father on Mount Moriah, even when he didn't understand Jacob, wrestling with God at Bethel Boaz, marrying a Moabite woman and caring for her and her mother-in-law David, the giant-slayer who was a man after God's own heart And there's Rahab, whose great act of faith is surprisingly so tainted with sin   How we too are like Rahab, even our good works and acts of faith are tainted with sin! Righteousness is like filthy rags—but God loves you!!!  What's so bad about Rahab is also what's so bad about us. The message of Christmas isn't for the holy and the whole, but for sinners like Rahab, and like you and me. 2) What's So Great About Grace?   If we’re going to see what’s so great about grace in the life of Rahab, we need to notice...   A) Grace Withholds What Sin Rightly Deserves   Joshua 2:9-11 -- “I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that the fear of you has  fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea  before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings  of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you  devoted to destruction. And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the LORD your God, he is God in  the heavens above and on the earth beneath.”   Rahab is fearful because she knows she deserves judgment “But in the cities of these peoples that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes, but you shall devote them to complete destruction, the Hittites and the Amorites, the Canaanites and the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, as the Lord your God has commanded,” —Deuteronomy 20:16-17     Seems unfair! Guilty of being born in Jericho! Until you remember that she too is like Jericho We’re just like Rahab! Born into a city destined for destruction We can complain it’s not fair to be judged for Adam’s sin Until we look in the mirror and realize that we’re not just innocent citizens of Jericho, we’re willing participants    So what do we need to do? Just what Rahab did. In faith we need to ask for rescue...   Joshua 2:12-13 -- Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father's house, and give me a sure sign that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.”   I love their response...   “And the men said to her, "Our life for yours even to death! If you do not tell this business of ours, then when the Lord gives us the land we will deal kindly and faithfully with you."”—Joshua 2:14 I love their response... my life for yours JESUS!!!   God doesn’t give us what we deserve because He gave it to Jesus instead.  Born into this evil city of man Loved among the inhabitants of Jericho  Instead of devoting us to destruction, God devoted His own SonIf we’re going to see what’s so great about grace in the life of Rahab, we also need to notice...B) Grace Gives What Sinners Don't DeserveTwo things that we crave... Community—we want to belong Mission—we want a purpose    God gave both to Adam and Eve Be fruitful and multiply (Community) HHave dominion over the earth (Mission—display God’s glory all over the earth) But on this side of the fall, can we ever have those things again?   Because of grace Rahab gets both... Rahab gets a family (marries Salmon, has a baby named Boaz) Rahab gets a mission (display God’s glory all over the earth)   And because of grace, so do we . . . But not without a cost  Jesus gave up His perfect community with the Father so we could be adopted Jesus had to sacrifice His personal mission to the will of the Father (should’ve been born in palace, received glory and honor, etc.)   The message of Christmas isn't for the holy and the whole, but for sinners like Rahab, and like you and me.

Welcome to a very special pre-read episode. This December, Matt, Adrian, and a series of guests are reading 3 separate works of "classic" SF and talking about them & what makes them a "classic". The works will be: * Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke (https://amzn.to/35WGICa)  * Ice by Anna Kavan (https://amzn.to/33CEfes)  * Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand by Samuel R. Delany (https://amzn.to/2RdBTAk)  Each book (& author) has had an large influence on modern SF, and we'll talk about that in those respective episodes over the course of this month. In this episode, we dive deep into our own history of reading SF, with an eye towards the golden age. How did we get into SF, which authors did we first find that spoke to us, how did we find new authors & books, and why was so-called "classic" SF such an outsized influence on two kids growing up in the 90s and 00s? In addition, we have a discussion on the problematic nature of a lot of these books and authors. Is it still worth reading something you like knowing what we know now about the books & the people behind them? How might different people have different answers to that question? How do we, specifically, choose books to read for this podcast? It's a difficult but hopefully enlightening conversation.  We'll be off the 2nd week of December, and then back the final 3 Tuesdays of the month with a separate episode on each of these books.  --- As always, we'd love to hear from you! Chat with us on twitter at @spectologypod, send us an email at spectologypod@gmail.com, or submit the episode to r/printSF on reddit. Create Your Own Online Notes HERE Who Needs Christmas? Part:1 The Girl Who Got Ahead - The Story of Tamar   Opening:  A couple of weeks ago- I was researching my family name, and specifically a man by the name of Henry Rathbone. I was under the impression that because of his dereliction of duty he had been a contributing factor in the death of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. You can imagine my relief as I quickly uncovered, that he in fact was not a contributing factor to that great tragedy at all, the opposite was true. Not long after “The Late Unpleasantness” (a folk term for the Civil War) had ended, President Lincoln invited his Friend Major Henry Rathbone, and his fiancée Clara Harris to join him and his wife at Ford’s theater for the evening. You can imagine my familial pride swell as I read of his heroism that night as John Wilkes Booth slipped into their unguarded box and shot President Lincoln at point blank range. In trying to stop and apprehend the criminal, Major Rathbone was slashed from his shoulder to his elbow severely and deeply but fought to keep Booth from escaping. As Booth jumped over the balcony to the stage below, Major Rathbone grabbed his coat, causing Booth to fall and land awkwardly, injuring himself and ultimately making it possible for him to be apprehended days later. A heroic man indeed, and a Rathbone at that. A Friend of the President. Unfortunately, I kept reading. After that tragedy, Henry Rathbone was promoted to Colonel, but that night’s events haunted him. After resigning from the Army in 1870, his mental health continued to decline. In 1882, He, his wife and their children moved to Germany, but he was not able to shake the anguish. In December of 1883, in a fit of madness he attacked his children and when Clara tried to protect them, he murdered her then tried to commit suicide. He was committed to a hospital for the criminally insane where he lived the last 27 years of his life, dying there in 1911 then buried in the city cemetery. In 1952, because his grave was never visited, and there was no family interest, the cemetery management had his remains exhumed and disposed of to make room for new occupants. A life so full of plans and promise ended in horrible shame and tragedy and rejection, even in death. Fortunately, (and you can trust me on this) Henry Rathbone is from a different line of Rathbones. I am sure of it because I closed my browser, deleted my history, cancelled my subscription to Ancestry.com, and after today, have no plans to mention this man again nor do any deep research into my family history. Perhaps you have been in a similar place, researching your lineage and finding not only surprising heroes but maybe even a despicable villain or two. Perhaps your family tree is full of honorable men and women who have left a legacy to be proud of. Perhaps you are convinced no good can come from looking so you are just moving on. Whatever the case, we think that the next 4 weeks will be not only useful in your understanding, but perhaps even eternity altering, as we look at the lineage off Jesus of Nazareth, The Son of God. This December, by God’s Grace we will answer the Question – “Who Needs Christmas?” When we say, “Who Needs Christmas?” we aren’t talking about the glitter, the lights, the materialism or the busyness that is sure to be on us, but the Message of Christmas, which is Jesus.  As we look at the lineage of Jesus over the next four weeks, we will understand that when God doesn’t just include notorious names in His family tree, but the Holy Spirit HIGHLIGHTS them, something important is happening. This December we unpack the surprising truth, that the message of Christmas is not for the holy & the whole, but for schemers, sinners, outcasts, and the broken. In Other Words, the message of Christmas is for people just like me and you.   Virtually every ancient or Biblical genealogy is an exclusive list of males. Simply because it was through the father’s that Prestige, Power, Titles and Inheritance passed. But in the lineage of Christ presented in Matthew’s Gospel, 4 women stand out for less than prestigious reasons.  Today we will look at the first woman mentioned in the lineage of Jesus, Tamar , a lady often castigated and reviled, a woman who was a brilliant schemer. Tamar was the girl who got ahead. The message of Christmas is for schemers like Tamar, and for you and me. vv. Matthew 1:3 Matthew 1:3 and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram,   Often whenever we think of the various characters highlighted in Scripture, our first thoughts are of their exploits- as in the case of Moses, or perhaps their evil as in Judas, the disciple who betrayed Jesus. But often when we do that we are observing scripture from a very narrow perspective – our lens is focused on the moment, not the purpose or the plan. This morning we are going to zoom out for a bit and examine God’s Redemptive Plan and purpose to understand ·                  Why Tamar is named in the lineage of Christ ·                  Why Tamar matters for me, and for you ·                  Why the message of Christmas will never fail   After all, without a Redemptive plan, without an eternal purpose, what we are left with when we look at the characters in the lineage of Jesus is another set of far distant relatives, that would make us want to delete our search history and close our browser. 1.   Why is Tamar named in the lineage of Christ? Lets begin with a brief summary of the history of God’s plan to the days of Tamar.   ·        When we talk about God’s Plan of Redemption remember it is a plan that has existed before the world was created. To see that we have to go to the LAST book of Scripture, Revelation. Writing about those who will be deceived and worship a false God, exerience the full wrath of a Holy God and spend an eternity in torment John records that they will be :   Rev 13:8(b)  …. everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain. Four Truths – God Created the Plan, God controls the plan, The Plan has always been in place, The Plan is For His Glory & our Good.   ·        Mankind was first given the promise by God that there was a plan in place shortly after Adam & Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden. God cursed the serpent who deceived Eve and said this     I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel." (Genesis 3:15)   ·        The promise of God was simple, that one day a descendant of Adam & Eve would crush the serpent. That promise was the Hope for man to cling to, that one day sin would be defeated, and the relationship between God & man restored. It is still today a Secured Hope for all who repent and believe.   ·        As we move through early history we find that God called a man named Abraham to himself, established a covenant with Abraham and told him that he would have descendants as numerous as the stars. God told Abraham that not only would he have a son when it was naturally impossible for Sarah to have a son, God even named him! His name would be Isaac.   ·        Abraham faced a great test after Isaac was older when God asked him to take Isaac to Mountains of Moriah and offer him as a sacrifice. On that day, God provided a ram for Abraham to sacrifice instead of his son, a foreshadowing of the Lamb who would take away the sins of the world. Abraham spoke of that place in Genesis 22:   So Abraham called the name of that place, "The LORD will provide"; as it is said to this day, "On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided." (Genesis 22:14)   Hundreds of Years later, on those same mountains, Solomon would build the Temple, and then ultimately nearby, the Lamb of God would bear our shame and the wrath of God on a criminal’s cross.   ·        The blessing of God- the promise that through Isaac the nations of the earth would be blessed would continue through the descendants of Isaac and when Rebekah became pregnant, she felt a great battle raging inside her womb. God told her that two mighty nations were in her womb but the older would serve the younger- signifying Jacob- Later to be named Israel - would be the path of blessing.   ·        Jacob had his own encounters with God, one of which was a dream where he was told   … in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.” (Genesis 28:14)     ·        So now we are focused on the family of Jacob who would have 12 sons. Where would God Sovereignly place the lineage of Jesus – the one who would bless all the nations of the earth?   ·        Simeon & Levi, the 2nd and 3rd sons – they deceitfully made a treaty with a people group in the land iso they could murder & plunder the city in revenge for an assault on their sister Dinah. Because of their reckless actions, in fear the family had to move, but God protected them in a miraculous way- showing the inhabitants of the land this was God’s Chosen people and then God changed Jacob’s name to Israel.   ·        Reuben- the firstborn- committed sin with Israel’s wife, Israel found out. He said nothing at the time, but we find out later Israel will revoke his position and inheritance because of this.   ·        One of the sons – Joseph- was an exceptionally Godly man- so much so that he is regarded as an Old Testament “Picture” or “Type” of who the Christ would be. His brothers hated him, hated him so much they conspired to kill him, threw him in a pit to die, but then Judah- the 4th son of Jacob, convinced his other brothers that if they sold him to the Egyptians, not only would they make a profit, but somehow his blood would not be on their hands. So, Joseph is out of the picture for now, thought to be dead. Judah the brother with a plan and able to make a buck to boot.   Does this sound like a family that needs the message of Christmas? You see, the message of Christmas is for sinners like Reuben, people with anger issues like Simeon & Levi, people with a Godly example who really need rescuing like Joseph, people who try to make a buck and cover their sins like Judah. Unremarkable people who escape the notice of scandal, just trying to get along and get by like the other 7 sons of Israel. People like you, people like me. We need the message of Christmas.   ·        After Judah orchestrates Josephs being sold into slavery, He heads “Down” (geographically and Spiritually) to the flatlands. Genesis 38 contains the rest of the account of Tamar.   ·        One prohibition and two Cultural notes we make in looking through the lens of God’s redemptive plan. These are critical - 1. Abraham specifically prohibits Isaac’s wife from being a Canaanite woman due to their hardened idolatrous lifestyle. That prohibition was repeated from Isaac to Jacob- no Canaanite wife. That prohibition was still in place for the sons of Jacob and would be codified in the Law hundreds of years later.   2. The Father was to choose a wife for the son and ensure the family thrived. Today we fear the mother in law, then the father in law was in charge.   3. The second cultural custom already in place which would also be codified in the Law given to Moses was a levirate marriage. A levirate worked like this: In order to protect and preserve the ability for a line of descendants to exist once a father chose a wife for his son the father remained responsible to ensure the family line continued. If the husband died before a son was born, the father was to appoint either his next son or if there were none, his duty was to find the closest relative able to marry the widow. The son of that union would be the son of the dead husband, carrying on that family’s name, retaining all rights of inheritance, preserving the lineage, and also ensuring the widowed wife would have someone to care for her in her old age.   ·        So, Judah – goes Down, and He picks his own wife out, a Canaanite woman. Notice Genesis 38:2  There Judah saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua. He took her and went in to her, (Genesis 38:2)   Her name is not even mentioned in Scripture. (some say the daughters name is Shua – vv 12 disproves that) (1 Chronicles 2:3 says Bath-Shua – Hyphenated meaning = Daughter of Shua)   ·        Judah has 3 sons by this woman, Er, Onan, and Shelah. He picks a wife for Er named Tamar- The Scriptures say Er was wicked in the sight of God, and God put him to death. Friend if you don’t think God is involved in the everyday affairs of mankind, think about that. God saw him, he was evil, God ended his life. Judah, being the good father, mindful of the importance of lineage, tells Onan to marry Tamar, which he does.   Onan though was obedient only on the surface. He knew there was a cost to full obedience … If Onan fulfills the levirate duty and has a child with Tamar it will be very costly – as it stood, there are two sons of Judah left- Onan now the oldest, in line to receive a double portion -or 2/3 of Judah’s inheritance. If there is a child- It would be considered Er’s son – The double portion of the blessing would go to him (50% of Judah’s wealth) leaving Onan at 25% and being the middle son- well, it is said the oldest and youngest get the most attention.. Onan repeatedly refuses to fulfill the duty of having a child with Tamar, God strikes him dead.   Now Judah has but one child left- Shelah. Judah senses a pattern here- son marries Tamar- son dies. With one son left Judah decides he needs a plan.   ·        His plan? Send Tamar back to her dads house to wait on Shelah to grow up, never send for her, cast her aside.   He was trying to use a loophole in the levirate custom – which said if there was no son or close relative to marry a widow, she may return to her father’s house and eat of his bread- and remain a widow until she died. Great Plan. Judah’s plan was really disobedience, not a loophole. Because he did not trust in the goodness of God, he was willing to cast aside Tamar as easily as he tossed away his brother, Joseph. Oh, how Tamar needed the message of Christmas, a message that even for schemers, for sinners, for Tamar, for you and me, there is Rescue & Redemption in the promised One- Jesus.   Remember however, it is God who is Sovereign over His redemptive plan, it is God who decrees where the lineage of Christ will be, it is God who utilizes the failed schemes and plans of man for His purpose and His Glory and it is God alone who can save.   ·        Tamar is a woman that the Scriptures are silent on regarding her lineage – it just doesn’t say. Some commentators label Tamar as a Canaanite, but I don’t think so. One, Scripture doesn’t label her that way- alerting us something is amiss, and two, even though the Canaanite people were predominant in that land, there were other people groups residing in clusters in the area. Three, unlike Judah’s wife whose name is intentionally left out, God wants us to know Tamar. She is there according to the will & purpose of God. Tamar needs the message of Christmas, just as you and I need the message of Christmas. God will use Tamar to bring the 4th son of Israel to a place of admitting his sin, a place where repentance and faith can take hold.   Tamar demonstrates three characteristics that infer God was working in her life for His purpose. - submission to the authority of Judah, obedience to his requests, and humility, not vengeance to bring him to a place where he saw and confessed his sin. Perhaps Tamar just desperately wanted a son who would care for her in her old age. God uses us and our schemes and our plans despite our short sightedness, despite our blindness to His presence. Perhaps we have missed that before thinking of Tamar by looking through the lens focused on her sin, not on the Savior who can save anyone, even Tamar, even me, even you.   ·        Tamar had time to wait and see – but I am sure she was thinking- how can this be made right. How can this be made fair? How can Judah be put in a position where he MUST fulfill his responsibility to ensure the line didn’t end there. She conceived a scheme – and it is unsavory, disgusting for us to think about, but Tamar- The schemer Tamar – the girl who got ahead - was filled with the bravery that comes from a scorned but resilient soul, and she acted on her plan.   ·        Once she was convinced that Judah had no intention of sending for her and giving her Shelah as husband, knowing that Judah’s idolatrous wife had died, Tamar set her scheme in place for the spirit, if not the letter of the levirate to be fulfilled through Judah’s lust. She had friends who were watching the movements of Judah, and she knew that after his grieving he would be going up to shear the flock – and that was always a time for festival’s and debauchery and fun on the road so to speak.   ·        She removes her “widows garments” (Maybe a Baggy sweatshirt with I am A Widow?) dresses herself as a lady who entertained men who were on the road - making sure to cover her face so Judah would not know it was her and sat by the roadside. Sure enough, Judah shows up- approaches and propositions her- and she asks what he has to offer?   ·        He offers her a goat from the flock – but Tamar insists on something of value to ensure he will return. She asks for the very things that will unmistakably identify him - His signet ring- His cord, and his staff. In today’s culture she would have said I need your American Express Platinum Card, your driver’s license and let’s take a selfie together. Judah says sure thing. By now, you must be convinced Judah needs the message of Christmas.   ·        Later he sends his servant back with a goat to exchange for his belongings, but the woman by the side of the road cannot be found. Judah desirous to not make it a news item that he was looking for his valuables back, decides the best thing to do is forget about it and chalk it up to a bad experience.   ·        3 months later word comes to Judah that his daughter in law the widow Tamar is with child – an offence so immoral death is the sentence that could be imposed. So Tamar is brought before Judah to be sentenced to death and she humbly passes the valuables to Judah and says “please identify whose these are, the signet and the cord and the staff”   ·        Judah is immediately overcome with guilt and confesses his sin and says “She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah."   ·        She goes on to have twins, Perez and Zerah. Notice what has happened- because of this levirate union- Tamar replaces the Canaanite daughter, and in doing so since Perez is the first born of the first born, He is now the new firstborn- Got that? There is now no Canaanite blood in the line of Judah   ·        After Genesis 38, Tamar only mentioned twice more in the Old Testament (Ruth & 1 Chronicles – both times as the mother of Perez) and once in the New Testament Matthew 1:3 that we read earlier). But Tamar is present in these genealogies because she was placed there by God for His purpose to continue His plan of redemption. She brought Judah to a moment of recognizing his sin and confessing that sin.   ·        A remarkable thing happens roughly 30 years later though. Israel is about to die after being reunited with Joseph in the land of Egypt. Israel’s sons were gathered for their blessing, and it would be this prophetic blessing that would reveal the next step in the lineage of Christ.   ·        Israel says this: "Judah, your brothers shall praise youThe scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples. (Gen 49:8-10)   ·        If man was writing the lineage of Jesus- he would certainly sanitize this sordid affair. God has Tamar included in the lineage of Christ to show A. God is in control of all things B. God relates to all of us, even in our sin C. Grace is available to all         2.   Why does Tamar’s story matter? She is so different than me.   Tamar’s was not only a schemer who out schemed another schemer, Judah, but Tamar was willing to violate her dignity and every moral norm to achieve her end. So, in that regard, we may say I would never do that.   But I know what it is like to have a close family member who abused and violated trust. When I was a young Christian, in a different era early 1970’s it was a time when children were to be seen but not heard, especially in church. It was a time, when, often, victims were examined sometimes more harshly than the victimizers. Because of that and having a rebellious spirit, I allowed distrust and resentment to guide my life for more than 20 years. I was determined to control every situation, every relationship, everything that was forbidden I wanted to find out why. I found out the hard way. I even schemed how to bring what I considered justice to the situation. I never acted on it, but I schemed. It wasn’t until I was in my mid 30’s that I gave it all back at the foot of a blood-stained tree called Calvary and experienced that Grace is for schemers like Tamar, Grace is for schemers like me. Grace is for schemers, perhaps you are familiar with one? Chances are, if you are not a schemer yourself, you have experienced the damage one can cause. Maybe you are carrying today baggage that can be laid down for the last time today  Here is the truth- We all will be judged guilty of not being perfect if by our actions we are judged by a Sinless Perfect God on judgment day. It doesn’t have to end that way. Don’t let your soul be rejected, even in death, like Henry Reed Rathbone’s remains were. After the Civil war ended, that bloody horrible conflict that took over 500,00 lives into eternity, the term Late Unpleasantness became vogue- it sounded so much cleaner and innocent than War. We do the same thing with our sin. It becomes a “Late Unpleasantness” rather than admit that we too are a people in need of Mercy – not getting what we deserve, and Grace, being given what we have not earned. There is only One Place that Mercy & Grace flow together- that is the message of Christmas.   The message of Christmas is the message of Hope eternal, Redemption complete, Relationships restored. Justice for the vulnerable, Mercy for the sinner. Grace for the undeserving. That is a message that was needed in every person associated with the lineage of Jesus, for Tamar and for you and for me.   Perhaps today, you came to see if there was a message of hope for you in this place. There may be relationships that have been shattered, health that has declined, perhaps you have circumstances that on the outside appear ok, but inside you know the opposite is true. The message of Christmas is for you.     You may be here today thinking, there may have been a chance long ago, but you don’t know the depths of what I have done. There is no hope. I am too far gone. Dear friend, the message of Christmas is for you.   You may be here thinking I am already fine. There was a time I said a prayer, walked an aisle, filled out a card and punched my ticket to heaven. I try to come to church at least once or twice a year, but really, who needs to hang around a bunch of church people. Once saved, always saved, while I am living, I can do my own thing. The message of Christmas is for you.   You may be here today and say God is well pleased with me. I am here when the doors open, I serve, I give, I sing, I even take communion - I check all the boxes. Dear church member, Heaven is not filled with church members, but sinners Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb. The message of Christmas is for you.   3.   Why the message of Christmas will never Fail   The message of Christmas will never fail because it is a completed story. We no longer must wait for a Savior, we no longer must wonder if the promise of a deliverer will stand, we no longer must wait to see if the serpent will be crushed, Jesus Has come.   The story is complete, but it is far from over. The Good news that Jesus has completed the work of Redemption is still vibrant, relevant and needed today for all of us. Salvation is available to all who come in repentance and faith. That is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the message of Christmas.     We believe that God created all things by His power. He created man in His image, meaning every human has value and dignity because of that. But our ancestors, Adam & Eve, willfully disobeyed God our creator, and by their sin, broke relationship with a Holy and sinless God. Every human born since that day has inherited a sinful nature, and willfully chooses to sin   But God, had an eternal plan before the world was created. That plan is that God would send His Son, Jesus, to be born of a virgin, lead a sinless life- willingly die a criminal’s death at Calvary’s Cross taking upon himself the punishment for our sin, my sin, Tamar’s sin, Judah’s sin – the sins of all would repent and believe in Him. His death satisfied the wrath of God and three days after He died, He bodily rose from the grave, ascended after 40 days to heaven where He rules and reigns today. We believe that one Day Jesus will again physically return and even the last enemy, death, will be eternally defeated. The message of Christmas is that all who turn from their sin and place their trust in Him are saved and adopted into His family. Never again to be abandoned, never again to be cast aside, never again to be separated from the Love of God.   This is God’s plan, orchestrated by God, controlled by God, for God’s Glory and our good. HE is the one who pursues us, we do not pursue him. Just as Tamar was sovereignly placed in the life of Judah, to continue the lineage of Christ and bring Judah to a place of recognition and confession of His sin, God has placed the Gospel in front of you today. How will you respond?   If you are here today and have never responded to God’s offer of hope, I believe that He is calling you to himself today, that as your hear the Gospel, the Holy Spirit is doing His work, convicting of sin and pointing to Jesus Christ, our Righteousness. Will you confess your sin to him, your need for a savior, repent and believe? There is Hope in only one place, the finished work of Jesus. Right where you are today you can be saved.   Ephesians 2:8-9 says For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (Eph 2:8-9)   What are you trusting in today? Your goodness or the sinless perfection of Jesus? It is His Plan, His Son, His Righteousness, His blood. Come today to Christ.   Titus 3:5 says he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,  (Titus 3:5)   If you are here today trusting in a fading memory of a decision of your mind or emotion to say a prayer or sign a card and you think you are safe from hell but other than that nothing has really changed - you are still doing your own thing be reminded of this from the Apostle Paul.   Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (2Co 5:17)   Ask yourself- Has there been a real change in my life? It is a question with eternal consequences. Don’t be like Judah and think that guilt will disappear. Repent and believe.   The Gospel of John records But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. (Joh 1:12-13)   If you are here and say I love Jesus, but I hate the church, I just don’t like being around people. Believers are brought into a family, not a perfect family, but a redeemed family. We are no longer of a different Lineage. There is no closing your browser and clearing your search history. It is a struggle- but realize just as Rebekah had a war raging in her womb- there is a struggle that happens every day in the life of a Christian- the struggle of the old nature vs. the new nature in Christ. Today, may the Gospel continue to bring you to a place of submission and obedience to His will.   We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. (1Jn 3:14)   Are you fully in on Christ? There is a cost to obedience- there is – but don’t be like Onan and only obey on the surface. What is loss of this world will be rewarded a hundredfold in eternity.   Have you really responded to the Message of Christmas. Please don’t leave here today if you have any questions about what it means to be a Christian, what it means to have the message of Christmas written on your heart. Don’t leave thinking your name is in the Book of Life, when it may not be there at all.  Repent & Believe.   Let us pray

Listeners to the show — or, really, anyone within earshot — already know how much of an affinity Rob has for the Star Wars saga. The intergalactic battles and "space opera" melodrama of the Skywalker family have been attracting audiences for more than 40 years. So the fact that the franchise has long ranked among Rob's personal favorites shouldn't be much of a surprise. Over more than 40 years, George Lucas's "galaxy far, far away" has spawned countless films, television series, novels, comic books, video games and assorted ancillary merchandise. But, while the saga's Disney overlords will certainly keep fresh content coming for many, many years (including original series on its upcoming Disney+ streaming services), 2019 does mark a definitive end to at least part of what we've all come to love about Star Wars. This December, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — the ninth "Episode" within the franchise centering on the lineage of Anakin Skywalker) — will bring a close to not just the sequel trilogy that began with the introduction of Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) in 2015's The Force Awakens. The new film, featuring the return of director J.J. Abrams, will serve as the conclusion to the Skywalker story once and for all. As such, the film has been shrouded in mystery. Until now. At the recent Star Wars Celebration event in Chicago, Disney and Lucasfilm at long last unveiled the trailer (and, thusly, the title) of their follow-up to divisive 2017 release The Last Jedi. Clocking in at roughly two minutes, this first footage certainly doesn't spoil anything. But it does whet our appetites for what we may expect this December. Join us as we break down the title and trailer, exploring exactly what we may expect when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters later this year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adzYW5DZoWs SHOW NOTES Rob's Star Wars story: https://www.crookedtable.com/podcast-star-wars-story/ Our two-part The Force Awakens review: https://www.crookedtable.com/crooked-table-podcast-episode-17-a-long-time-ago/ https://www.crookedtable.com/crooked-table-podcast-episode-18-in-a-galaxy-far-far-away/ Rob's Rogue One review: https://www.crookedtable.com/rogue-one-star-wars-podcast/ Rob's Solo review: https://www.crookedtable.com/star-wars-solo-boba-fett-podcast-review/ Want to appear on a future episode of the Crooked Table Podcast? You Were Made for This

Welcome to episode 7, the year in review and the year ahead. I like to think of it as the best of 2018. But since we only started on November 28th, it’s also the ALL of 2018. By way of a brief review, and for any first-time listeners, this podcasts is all about relationships. Experience and observation have taught me that relationships are one of the most rewarding aspects of life, and at the same time, one of the most frustrating. The goal of this podcast is to help people experience more of the rewards of relationships, and less of the frustrations. Like many others, I firmly believe we are all made for relationships. We’re not meant to live life alone. That’s how the name of the podcast came to be, Your Were Made for This. The “this” we were made for is fulfilling, life-giving relationships. It’s just the opposite of a what a recent Wall Street Journal article describes about baby boomers being the most isolated generation of all. I’ll have a link to the article at the end of the show notes. It’s entitled, “The Loneliest Generation: Americans, More Than Ever, Are Aging Alone.” When you read the stories of people, and how they’re living alone, well it’s really quite sad. The purpose of this podcast is to somehow, in some small measure, stem the tide of loneliness by contributing something to help people transform their relationships into the best they can be. The podcast is to be something that actually helps people, rather just another outlet for creative expression. This podcast is to be about YOU, not me. Whether we’ve succeeded at this in the first 4 weeks of the show is up to you the listener to decide. But that’s my goal. Another goal of the podcast is that it become a means of community for people who would like to to be encouraged by stories of others who are making progress in transforming their relationships into the best they can be. I’m not exactly sure how that’s going to work. Maybe it will be a Facebook group later, I don’t know. We’ll see. Toward this goal, and for this last podcast of 2018, I want to share today selected responses I’ve received from listeners regarding the podcasts aired so far. I’ve received a fair number of emails and comments from people saying they like what they’re hearing so far. I’ve also received some feedback from folks with suggestions for ways to improve the podcast, which I’ve appreciated. In today’s program I want to share responses of people who actually changed as a result of what they heard in one or more of the six episodes aired this year. Changed either their behavior, or the way they think. I plan to do something like this every now and then to foster a sense of community. As well as to encourage you in transforming YOUR relationships into the best they can be. So I would appreciate hearing from YOU with stories YOU have of applying what you’ve learned on this podcast. You can either leave comments in the box below in the show notes, send an email to john@caringforothers.org, or direct message me in Facebook. Okay, on to the listener responses. In the very first episode, I mentioned that I plan to share relationship principles and skills through stories, both my own, and from guests I interview. The older I get, the more I appreciate what a powerful learning tool stories can be. One story I shared at the end of episode one was the story of when I was 15 and a neighbor boy, we affectionately called Bozo, was killed. I mentioned the scene of watching my dad walking down the middle of our street, with his arms over the shoulder of the father of whose son had just died hours before. The picture of that scene is still vivid in my memory, and it was something that helped me see my relationship with my father in a new light, and to forgive him for how he treated me. After hearing this story in episode one, one listener wrote to tell me, “My husband and I listened to your 1st podcast. We were really gripped by the story of your dad and the death of Bozo. We talked about it and this morning called a friend who just this week lost his wife. Thanks, John. You are making a difference.” I can’t tell you how much that encouraged me, to know someone took action, and actually did something to care for a hurting friend. It reminded me of a phrase I use often, and which you’ll hear on this podcast from time to time. And that is, when we try to bring out the best in others, we bring out the best in ourselves. These 2 listeners trying to bring out the best that was in their grieving friend. I don’t know what they said to him, but I know this couple and they have a heart to help people. For the grieving husband to know someone cares enough to make a phone call to him has got to help deal with his sorrow. ___________________________________ In responding to Episode 2, “The Gift of a Background Relationship,” a listener from Pennsylvania wrote: “I loved the story about the relationship you have with your mother-in-law…in your podcast you ask each to think about someone in their lives like this [ This was in reference to the end of the movie about Mr. Rogers, Won’t You Be my Neighbor. The film showed co-workers of Mr. Rogers tearing up as they re-called people from their past who believed in them; who nurtured them.] "It came to mind yesterday morning shortly after I got a doe on the last day of the PA deer season. I reflected on my father, a man of few words, but his actions spoke deep love. Until yesterday, I had not shed one tear over my father’s passing 9 years ago. But, up on the mountain, as I looked over the valley…, I thought of dad and how much I miss him. He would have loved the moment of hearing that I got a deer and he would have loved butchering it. It was how we connected. It was an emotional moment, a precious moment. I never felt I needed to shed a tear over dad’s death because all was good when God took him home. So those very few tears yesterday morning were ones of thankfulness and appreciation for God’s gift of my father to me.” Man, that encouraged my heart to know the story of my relationship with my mother-in-law triggered something within this listener to reflect with appreciation on his relationship with his father. And to shed a few tears of gratitude for him. ___________________________________ Another response to episode 2 comes for a missionary serving in the Mideast. This person writes: “I must say just as you were encouraged by seeing the kindness in Janet's singing with her mother, so I have always been positively affected by any time I have had with you.  Listening to your family's Life Achievement Award list, or your caring for a trying dog, or your lovely memories of your mother-in-law had me laughing uncontrollably one moment and then soberly contemplating the truth that was being shared.  How grateful I am for you, for your willingness to open your life so we, the listeners, can be trained in loving each other more fully.  Thank you for including me in the privileged group that gets to listen!” I think the more we open up our lives to each other, the greater the chance for a deeper relationship we can have with each other. We can learn to love well when we have the heart and take the time to watch how others love. We’re all teachers, for good or ill, because people are watching. More than we realize. ___________________________________ Episode 3, “The Gift for the Person who has Everything,” drew this response from a listener: “I liked episode 3. I’m going to incorporate a ‘lifetime achievement award’ for my husband’s 60th birthday. I also subscribed to your podcast.” This is great to hear. Something very practical this woman can do to honor her husband. It’s action she can take. Taking action, the right action, can be very helpful in transforming a good relationship already into the best relationship it can be. I plan to share more of these relationship tips, or hacks, as they’re now called, moving into 2019. There are specific relationship skills we’ll be examining and practicing in the months ahead. ___________________________________ Episode 4, “The Gift of Even Though,” evoked this response from a listener: “Your podcast about joy and how sharing in others’ joy, multiples joy - it’s not a zero sum game. This really resonated with me! My husband and I have been able to have kids easily and when we are around friends who struggle with infertility, I feel guilty sharing the joys of my children. It was so beautiful to hear how your friends [Vern and Lorraine] had many “children” without having their own.” I take this to mean, there was a change in thinking in how she viewed sharing the joy of her children with childless friends. By not sharing your joy, you may be depriving them of their joy. That joy, like love, is an unlimited natural resources that never depletes. In fact, the more you share in the joys of others, the more joy multiplies itself. It seems this perspective helps in easing any guilt feelings. After all, what is the listener guilty of? Being blessed with children. I can understand there are times when we share our joy it is met with a “must be nice” response. That is painful, for sure. There’s that verse in the Bible about “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” That’s a command to be joyful over the joy of others, not a suggestion. For many of us that’s harder to do than to mourn with people, than to feel their pain. ___________________________________ Another listener, this one a missionary serving in Eastern Europe, wrote: "I'm so glad you’d decided to do a podcast! I’ve listened to all of them so far and look forward to listening further. Glad I could be your connection in this part of the world! "Over the past few years, I’ve found myself being placed in more ministry leadership-type positions. As my responsibilities have increased, and (potential) impact expanded, I’ve noticed that my limitations in relationships have restricted some of my potential influence. Plus, of course, I totally agree we are made for community, so this affects my own well being too. But, praise God I am a work in progress, can by his grace grow, and can learn from others, like yourself!” What a great attitude, and such self-awareness! One relationship that gets less attention than it deserves is our relationship with our self. Self-awareness is such an important leadership trait. Without it, we suffer the consequences of exceeding our limitations, alienating people at times, and hindering the achievement of our organization’s goals. We’ll be talking about self-awareness in future episodes of You Were Made for This. ___________________________________ Finally, another listener wrote, “Hi John, I just wanted to let you know how much the last two podcasts specific to joy meant to me. It made so much sense to me and gave Jesus/Others/You so much more meaning and depth. I think with the last two especially you are finding your zone.” ___________________________________ All of this leads us to the main take-away from today’s episode, our show in a sentence Listening well to the relationships stories of others can teach us much to help transform our relationships into the best they can be Response (Call to Action) to today’s show You can encourage others by sharing stories here on this podcast of what you’re doing to help transform your relationships into the best they can be. It can be an action, or even a different way of thinking about your relationship. You can either leave comments in the box below in the show notes, send an email to john@caringforothers.org, or direct message me in Facebook. Your identity will be kept confidential. Coming up next week…and next year Next week’s episode the first of 2019, will feature our very first interview. The first of many to come in the new year.
