Barack Obama made history in 2008, becoming the first African American to be elected to our nation's highest office, as our 44th President. When he took office in January 2009, he brought a small coterie of close and loyal friends from his home state of Illinois to join him at the White House. Among them was Tina Tchen, who would become a White House insider and a close aide to Barack and Michelle Obama.  Tchen began her White House tenure in 2009 as the Director of Public Engagement before serving as Assistant to President Obama and Chief of Staff to the First Lady from 2011 to 2017. She talks about what it was like to be behind the scenes in the West and East Wings during the Obama administration working closely with President and Mrs. Obama, and what their legacies will mean to history.

Gender equality in the workplace was set back more than a decade. And women were feeling burned out at faster rates. California Governor Gavin Newsom is facing a recall election, which could result in getting replaced by a right-wing candidate even if he defeats them by a landslide in vote totals. We spoke with Dan Pfeiffer, a co-host of Pod Save America, about the state of the election, and what voters in California need to know.  The fallout from the shameful last act of former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has extended to Time's Up, the organization founded by some of Hollywood's most powerful women with the aim of supporting victims of sexual harassment and assault. Now, former members of Time's Up and some sexual abuse victims are criticizing the org, saying that it has strayed away from its mission and failed the women they were supposed to help. And in headlines: two House members take a secret trip to Kabul, OnlyFans reverses its stance on sexually explicit content, and Tony Hawk wants us to buy his blood. Did you know that in the United States in 2020 over 2 million women left the workforce, and in December 140,000 jobs were lost and every one of those was to a woman. This is an issue which disproportionately impacts Black and Latina women, who often work in roles that lack paid sick leave and the ability to work from home. As covid19 hit, mothers were forced to stay at home to care for their children.  According to UN Women, the global organisation responsible for advancing gender equality, before the crisis started, women did nearly 3 times as much unpaid care and domestic work as men. Social distancing measures, school closures and overburdened health systems have put an increased demand on women and girls to cater to the basic survival needs of the family and care for the sick and the elderly. Emerging evidence from UN Women's rapid gender assessment surveys demonstrates that the disproportionate share of unpaid care work is still falling on women's shoulders during the pandemic; in fact, they report an increase in unpaid care, often while managing paid work.  This is a global issue.  In rural contexts, women are generally responsible for gathering water and firewood. This constrains their ability to carry out paid work, particularly when jobs cannot be carried out remotely. In urban areas, women are having to care for children at home while holding down a full time remote job. While men have spent more time at home, and in some cases cared for their children or dependents too, women are still undertaking the majority of domestic duties at home.  Tina Tchen, the president and CEO of TIME'S UP Now and the TIME'S UP Foundation, joins us to share why care can't wait. Tina is a former assistant to President Barack Obama, executive director of the White House Council on Women and Girls, and chief of staff to First Lady Michelle Obama. Tina has worked to advance gender equality, particularly for working women. Here Tina shares how the care crisis is playing out in the United States.

Back for the new year. For this week's episode, I decided to create a collection of memorable moments from 2020. Honestly, there are too numerous to count. I wanted to capture pieces of conversations that really moved me: Stopped me in my tracks, made me laugh and smile, made me lose my breath.   1. EPISODE 1:  HOW IS COVID19? REPORTS OF GENEVA, LONDON, AND PHILADELPHIAThe stress and anxiety was palpable in this episode. I spoke with a doctor friends one in Eva Niyibizi Geneva, one in London Segun Olusanya, and one here in Philadelphia Jamie Garfield. 2. EPISODE 3:  IS COVID19 INCITING NARRATIVE VIOLENCE?I spoke with two doctors who are also storytellers.  Dr. Emily Silverman founded and hosts the Nocturnists podcast. She has taken story telling and the audio to a whole new level. A highlight of healing for me and what is amazing here is we hear the seeds that were planted for something yet to sprout: After the murder of George Floyd in May 2020, they launched a new audio storytelling series called “Black Voices in Healthcare”, hosted by Ashley McMullen, MD and executive produced by Kimberly Manning, MD 3. EPISODE 9: ASHISH JHA AND MIRIAM LAUFER ON THE CDC + #COVID19 CURRENT EVENTSI laughed with Ashish Jha and Miriam Laufer when we discussed COVID19, the CDC, vaccines were on the horizon and not yet available, and what to do with kids and summer camp. The laugh surrounds the use of the word kerfuffle 4. EPISODE 11: STRUCTURAL RACISM AND THE #COVID19 PANDEMIC AS HEALTH CARE CRISES Hat tip  to Yale school of medicine 4th year student Max Tiako founder and host of @FlipScriptPod podcast covering health disparities in the U.S. & globally.   5. EPISODE 16: SYNDROME KI viewed the film in Miami right before the pandemic shut down everything. Syndrome K is a documentary, which tells the story of three doctors  Adriano Ossicini. Prof Giovanni Borromeo, Vittorio Sacerdoti who saved members of Rome's Jewish community by convincing the Nazis that these Jews were infected with a deadly and contagious disease that the doctors called Syndrome K. In this segment, Dr. Ignazio Marino, a transplant surgeon and former mayor of Rome, shared that his father was deported to a concentration camp.  6. EPISODE 13: ELLEN LUPTON AND ANDREW IBRAHIM : HEALTHDESIGN 101Two well known #HealthDesigners. Andrew is the chief medical officer of HOK's architecture Healthcare group and a general surgeon at the University of Michigan, Ellen is a senior curator at the Cooper Hewitt Museum in NYC and directs the graduate program in graphic design the Maryland Institute of Contemporary Art. Andrew is a general surgeon and They really highlighted the importance of Health Design now and going forward. Take a listen as they explain #HealthDesignNow 7. EPISODE 19: A CULTURE OF SILENCE: PHYSICIAN SUICIDE AND THE DR. LORNA BREEN FOUNDATIONWe paid tribute to the Dr. Lorna Breen and discussed the Lorna Breen Heroes Foundation . If we prioritize the mental health of medical professionals who are caring for some of our most vulnerable patients, and encourage help-seeking behaviors for mental health concerns and substance use disorders by reducing stigma, increasing resources, and having open conversations about mental health- maybe we can change the culture. In this moment Dr. Dan Egan reflects on his memory of Dr. Lorna Breen a colleague and friend who died by suicide in 2020 8. EPISODE 10: PRESIDENT AND CEO #TIMES UP TINA TCHEN ON LEADERSHIP DURING A CRISISI spoke with Tina Tchen, American lawyer Christina M. "Tina" Tchen CEO and President of Time's Up. She was a constant voice of equity and advocacy. Here she speaks on leading during a crisis: What to do 9. EPISODE 12: SENATOR MAGGIE HASSAN AND DR. HIRAL TIPIRNENI: WHY GO INTO POLITICSHere I am in conversation with Senator Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire. Hassan is one of only two women in American history to be elected as both a Governor and a Senator. She was the 81st Governor of New Hampshire, from 2013 to 2017. She has been active and focused during the recent period advocating on topics, such as PPE, Nursing Homes, the Opioid epidemic, Unemployment insurance Paid sick leave, and Training the returning workforce.  10. EPISODE 18: GLORIA STEINEM: WHY WOULD YOU NOT USE YOUR VOICE?In February 2020,  I sat with Ms Gloria Steinem. I asked her what she did for her health her self care and gave me a look of … well listen to what she said.

In this episode, we focus on why #WeHaveHerBack. You heard it recently in the wake of Sen. Kamala Harris’s selection as the vice presidential candidate for the Democratic ticket. #WeHaveHerBack is as a powerful challenge to newsrooms to avoid sexism in media representation. Tina Tchen, president and CEO of Time’s Up Now, joins host Dr. Michele Goodwin to talk the importance of having Harris’s back—and other women candidates’ backs, too. Today’s episode also focuses on women’s political leadership, starting with the urgent need to repeal the Helms Amendment. Dr. Goodwin is joined by two pathbreaking members of Congress—Representatives Jan Schakowsky and Barbara Lee—to discuss why women’s leadership has been central to forging political representation, equality and fighting for reproductive health, rights and justice—at home and abroad. Their leadership helps to put in context why the #WeHaveHerBack campaign is so important, and why women’s leadership matters. This week, on the issues: • Representative Barbara Lee represents California’s 13th district, which serves Oakland and the East Bay. She is the highest-ranking Black woman in Congress. She is also a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, serves as co-chair of the majority leader’s Task Force on Poverty and Opportunity, co-chair of the Pro Choice Caucus, and is former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and Congressional Progressive Caucus. • Representative Jan Schakowsky represents Illinois's 9th congressional district, which includes Chicago's North Side. She is the House senior chief deputy whip, chair of the Energy and Commerce Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee, and chair of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus Providers and Clinics Task Force. • Tina Tchen is president and CEO of Time’s Up Now. She is the former assistant to President Barack Obama and served as chief of staff to First Lady Michelle Obama. She was also the executive director of the White House Council on Women and Girls.Support the show (http://msmagazine.com)

Crina and Kirsten Get to Work

We all feel anxious at work sometimes, and for some, these emotions impact performance, relationships with coworkers and the quality of their work. SHOW NOTESOn this episode of Crina and Kirsten Get to Work our terrific twosome analyze anxiety in the workplace.Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.  Anxiety can also be triggered after the fact, i.e. by a death, job loss.  Anxiety can express itself as feeling nervous, jittery, sick to your stomach, jumpy, tired, irritable, dry mouth, sweaty and having difficulty sleeping – these are all signs of anxiety.  And Crina explains that if you get sweaty, panty liners stuck to the inside of your jacket is an excellent solution. And what causes it – what does not?!!  Deadlines, conflicts at work, managing people, unclear expectations, and of course - a pandemic.  Anxiety is prevalent among women at work. A study referenced in Mind Matters: Anxiety in the Workplace says 71% of women experience anxiety in the workplace. How do we manage it and how do we know when we need help?  Help may be just the thing if your anxiety interferes with your participation at work or in your life.  If you avoid experiences because of anxiety or feel as if your suffering is not reasonable, get help from a licensed therapist or counselor. Experts believe, in fact, that people may be hard-wired in the way they experience anxiety. Although scientists still don't precisely understand the interactions among genetic, environmental, psychological, and developmental factors, research suggests that high anxiety tends to run in families. And of course there are real COVID reasons for anxiety both in and outside of the workplace - women are on the front lines in healthcare (80% are women) and in women in social services (83% are women)  according to Tina Tchen of Time’s Up - and there are real risks being on the frontlines.  Covid also presents loves of uncertainties for all of us - what will returning to work be like, is it safe, will I catch it, is the information I am seeing in the news accurate, will I get a job in what will likely be a competitive market? So what do we do:Work – people need meaningful work.Talk with a Friend you Trust – it usually make us feel betterBe Organized and Prepare Yourself – when you are organized and prepared there is less to worry aboutEducate yourself about Anxiety – it will help you learn whether you need help to manageAsk for help – both inside and outside of workStay organized. Filing and clearing your desk and computer desktop may rank low on your priority list, but they can save you time in the long run and may prevent a crisis later.Avoid toxic coworkers. Try to ignore negativity and gossip in your workplace.Take breaks. A walk around the block or a few minutes of deep breathing can help clear your head.Be Healthy - eat healthfully, get enough sleep, exercise regularly, and limit caffeine and alcohol. Try to keep your body and mind in shape.Engage deeply in the here and now. Check out these articles for more infAnxiety and Stress in the WorkplaceMind Matters: Anxiety in the WorkplaceMind Matters: Anxiety in the Workplacehttps://www.verywellmind.com/work-anxiety-4692762Managing Stress and Anxiety

Why have so many of us failed to support opportunities for women and girls? Michelle Obama’s former chief of staff and long time civil rights attorney, Tina Tchen, highlights how everything from systemic work place policies, harassment, and backwards health care laws have challenged the identity and progression of American women, and the responsibility all of us (especially men) have in creating. Christina M. “Tina” Tchen is an American lawyer who most recently served as Assistant to the President Barack Obama and Chief of Staff to First Lady Michelle Obama. While devising and implementing the First Lady’s policy priorities — including improving access to health coverage for underserved women and investing in the economic opportunity of veteran families — Tchen also served as the Executive Director of the Council on Women & Girls, which advanced initiatives to minimize the gender pay gap, empower men to own their role in speaking out against sexual harassment and abuse, and invested in ensuring access to education among young girls in developing countries. An Ohio native, Tchen graduated from Northwestern Law and became a partner in the Chicago office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. She was active on the boards of entities such as University of Chicago Medicine and Chicago Public Library and celebrated for her public service and civil rights work by the Anti-Defamation League and the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois.
