Castore: How rejection from professional football kick-started a global sports brand

Guest post by Graham Ruddick Tom Beahon wanted to be a professional football player when he was growing up. This was not an unusual ambition for a teenager in Merseyside, north-west England. After all, this is the home of Liverpool and Everton, two of the biggest and most successful teams in the history of English football. Beahon was talented enough to be on the books of his local team, Tranmere Rovers, who are the smaller local rivals to Liverpool and Everton and play in the fourth tier of professional football in England. However, a conversation when he was just 20 years old would change Beahon's life forever. "I remember extremely vividly being called into the manager's office at Prenton Park, which is the stadium of Tranmere Rovers," Beahon says. "I'm being told that they're not going to renew my contract. You're 20 to 21 years old. You don't have a lot of life experience. You have literally dedicated your life up until that point to becoming a professional footballer. You've made huge sacrifices." When your friends are going out, drinking, partying, and doing all the fun stuff that people should be doing - you didn't do any of that, because you wanted to be a professional footballer. Then someone has sat across the table from you and told you that dream is no longer a reality. That's a big moment. "For me, it was a big thing that I'd let my dad down. My dad had come to watch all of my games. He sacrificed his own career. He wouldn't be in the office for long hours because he would take me to football and my brother to cricket." Beahon's life was now at a crossroads. Professional sport is littered with stories of young people who were spat out of the system at a young age and struggled. They usually leave with no educational qualifications because until this point they have dedicated their life to the sport. This was the case for Beahon, "I think you can essentially go one of two ways," he says. "That pain hurts you so much that you never want to be out of your comfort zone ever again. You want to do something where you're in control of the environment. You don't strive, because if you don't strive, you can't fail. I think a lot of people do that and I don't blame them at all. "Alternatively, you can go the other way. To my mind - my little uneducated brain at 20 years old - the worst has happened. But you realise that the sun still rises the next day. So what it instilled in me was whatever I do, I need to be in control of my own destiny. I'm not getting called into the manager's office again. Failure doesn't scare me. I've failed. The worst has happened. What scares me is not being in control." This story is the origins of Castore, the sportswear brand. Beahon would go on to found Castore with his brother Phil. They have built it into a company that is worth around £1 billion and is one of the fastest-growing sports brands in the world. Castore makes the kits for the Red Bull and McLaren Formula One team, Everton in the Premier League, and the English cricket team. In 2024, Beahon was asked to join the Prime Minister's Business Council in the UK, a collection of business leaders who advise the government on policy. He was surrounded by the chief executives of the biggest companies in the country. "Often there's this misconception of entrepreneurs that you have this lightbulb moment and all of a sudden the world changes," says Beahon." It's very rarely like that. So to have this setback [with football] - that is probably the seminal moment in my life. I wouldn't change it for the world." Beahon, now powered by a steely determination to succeed, got a job working in finance for a bank in London. After the financial crisis and a sharp rise in university tuition fees, companies started offering apprenticeship-style schemes to those who couldn't afford to go to university. His brother Phil also got a job in London and they lived together. When they got home from work in the evening they started discussing business ideas. ...

We look at Risk Roulette, by Graham Ruddick. Risk Roulette: The Surprising Reasons Why Some Businesses Work and Others Fail reviewed This is an enjoyable and thought provoking book. It also used examples and case studies from paths less regularly travelled. This was a bit of a relief for the reviewer because sometimes you can almost do entrepreneurs bingo when the same anecdotes and inspirational examples tend to come up again and again. The pace is rapid, as the whole book comes in at under 200 pages. The tone is good too, informative and helpful, written in an accessible way. We enjoyed reading it and would definitely recommend it to other readers, both younger students and also people using it for college and to inform their own business ideas too. More about Risk Roulette Risk Roulette: The surprising reasons why some businesses work and others fail NEW BOOK: Interviews reveal lessons from sports, finance and iconic entrepreneurs to show how to make risk work for you Why This Book Matters: Explains why those who have a real understanding of how risk and reward works will succeed Shows why taking excessive risk is likely to end in disaster and that entrepreneurs are not the buccaneering risk-takers they are often portrayed as Features interviews and case studies from businesses including Marks & Spencer, Castore, and Deliveroo, as well as football, Formula 1 champions, and skydivers Written by award-winning journalist who has interviewed some of the world's leading business executives, financiers and sports people Business success requires taking a risk, or two. But have you ever bet the house on a seemingly good idea only for it to become a bad business decision? And why is that some business leaders seem to be able to take long shots, and still come up trumps? Now a fascinating new book Risk Roulette from leading journalist Graham Ruddick, reveals the surprising reasons why some businesses work, and others fail. As a journalist with the Telegraph, Guardian, The Times and now Business Leader, Graham Ruddick has spent more than fifteen years researching and interviewing leaders, including the founders and chief executives of some of the biggest businesses around the world. Through this series of exclusive interviews, he has found that there's a pivotal trait leaders have when it comes to success: they understand risk. Through a collection of thought-provoking stories, interviews and case studies from leaders in business, finance and sport, Ruddick reveals that risk isn't just about being risky and having a blasé attitude to responsibility. It's about understanding risk more broadly, from the level of risk involved in a decision and how to reduce it, to the difference between short-term and long-term risk. Risk Roulette is a highly entertaining and informative read which joins icons from the worlds of business, finance, journalism and sports who know how to make risk work for them and push the boundaries and reveals their tried and tested secrets so you too can elevate your business. Today, their shareholding in the firm is valued at around £500million following a recent capital round, led by US merchant bank and investor The Raine Group, which values the company at £950mn. This investment will contribute to Castore's attack on the sportswear industry dominated by Adidas, Nike, Puma and Michael Rubin's online retailer Fanatics. This week, Castore added to its portfolio of around fifty team partnerships across football, cricket, rugby and formula one, when it signed new deals for next season with Everton and Club Brugge. Unofficial Partner is the leading podcast for the business of sport. Today, we are delighted to welcome Tom Beahon. Tom is the co-founder and co-CEO of Castore, the premium British sportswear brand which he runs with his brother Phil.  Having started his career as an aspiring professional footballer at Tranmere Rovers, Tom's love of sport and passion for business led him to setting up Castore with his brother. They currently produce the kits for the England Cricket Team, Aston Villa, Red Bull Racing, and Rangers Football Club to name a few.  From convincing Andy Murray to both invest in and promote the brand, to recently completing a £140m funding round to drive the next stage of growth for the business, Tom talks us through their incredible journey over the past seven years and why it is so important there is a British sportswear brand competing at the top table. In today's show, we discuss: Building a sportswear brand: Where did it all begin? How did the concept and vision for Castore get off the ground to become the company it is today? How the lack of British sportswear companies to compete with Nike, Adidas and Puma provided an opportunity to create a unique and modern sportswear company. From giving up careers in football and cricket to go on this journey, to taking jobs in finance to fund the first few years, what did risk and sacrifice look like to Tom and Phil? Figuring out a strategy to catch the attention of their initial customer profile, ‘The Goldman Sachs Man'.  The value of partnerships: To make it big, there needed to be a big name: the story of attracting Andy Murray and getting him excited about the business, the ambition, and the product! A move into team partnerships and kit manufacturing: what did this look like from a business perspective and how did it change the demands on the business? The focus of the major apparel companies on the ‘super league' teams meant there was an opportunity to unlock a huge amount of value for organisations who were not receiving the care and attention from their current providers. ‘If we're two hours late launching a shirt, bad things will happen'. The pressure of servicing the sports industry is unlike any other in the fashion industry.  From the surreal moment of watching England walk out in the Ashes wearing Castore kits, to being there when Rangers won their SPL title, how the partnerships between brand and team develop. Competing with the biggest brands: Nike, Adidas, Puma, New Balance dominate this market. Why is there not a British brand to compete at the top table? Understanding where to focus your strategy to break into the market and carve out your niche is important at the start, but hard to stick to when opportunities arise. How crucial is it to stick to your core vs. stretch into multiple new areas? How the growth of Nike and Adidas in particular has shaped the sportswear industry and influenced companies attempting to disrupt the ecosystem. With the largest brands placing so much focus on the biggest global sports assets, there is is lot of opportunity left behind for companies similar to Castore. Can you use this as a platform to compete for the biggest deals while providing a first class service to each partner?

And, the British sports brand Castore says it has raised $183M, from a trio of private equity investors, boosting the sportswear maker's value to $1.2B. The company has deals with the likes of tennis player Sir Andy Murray, Formula One's Red Bull team, the England Test cricket squad, and several English Premier League football clubs.
