Have you ever wondered why you are so reactive - to people, foods, smells, sounds and stress - while other people around you seem completely fine? Y ou are going in overdrive or even going into overwhelm, and think you just must be having a bad day or looking for what triggered you. The answer might surprise you. A specific cell of your immune system, mast cells, could be actually causing trauma responses in your body, putting you into emotional states, that have less to do with the people around you and more with a compound those cells release, histamine. Today we're tackling a commonly overlooked underlying reason for anxiety. We will be answering the question, How do mast cell activation and mold toxicity keep us stuck in our responses and triggers to trauma? Before we dive in, I want to dedicate this episode to the loving memory of our guest Beth O'Hara, who passed away in July 2024. Beth was a pioneering functional naturopath who transformed countless lives through her work with Mast Cell 360, helping people understand and heal from complex cases of Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), mold toxicity, and related conditions. She was a friend to me and I am sad to not have more time and conversations with her. In this episode, you'll discover: How to recognize if histamine is driving your anxiety Why mold exposure can keep your body stuck in trauma responses long after exposure How mast cells bridge your immune system and emotional overwhelm Why and how mast cells will block your ability to create inner safety Practical tools to decrease reactivity and build resilience For more information and show notes, please visit our website: https://biologyoftrauma.com/biology-of-trauma-podcast/

The quality of your neurotransmitters (serotonin, gabba etc) are determined by the quality of your gut health. This week on the podcast I interview Heather Famularo who is a mum, wife, nutritionist and certified GAPS practitioner. She's passionate about seeing food intolerances reversed by healing the gut. She knows that simply removing foods and living on a restricted diet forever is not the answer, and that 90% of healing in the gut happens in the kitchen - and anyone can do it! Together we explore: The role of Heather's own health (and her husband's) in guiding her to her career as a nutritionist and GAPS practitioner How to tell if you have a histamine intolerance and what a holistic approach to healing it looks like The link between stress/anxiety and the gut How to tackle perfectionism and fear around foods and “getting it right” Easy mistakes to make when using the GAPS protocol or healing your gut Supporting your body as it detoxes Important considerations when your experiencing chronic illness Plus more! Most believe that curcumin, broccoli, onions and garlic are healthy. While that is true for some, it is not true for everyone. Teri has developed a system, based on many years of resolving complicated medical problems, based on three categories of poor absorption/ assimilation. She finds that the malabsorption of protein, fat and sulfur has become one of the biggest contributors to America's collective current state of imbalance. With the help of genetics and patient symptoms, she tailers specific diets for people who fall into each (or a combination) of these categories. These patterns of malabsorption impact genetic expression, alter detoxification pathways and increase pathogenicity in our bodies. Learn about these patterns, how to identify them and about diets that will help each category.

Oxalates, salicylates, and phenols may be the culprit of new physical and/or emotional symptoms. They can trigger histamine intolerance and lead to many unwanted symptoms. A low histamine, low oxalate, low salicylate, low phenol diet along with support for detoxification, including liver support and healing the gut, and balancing candida, are all crucial. There are some enzymes that can help along the way as we work on the underlying root cases, but we need to reduce the amounts of these foods our child is eating, especially if we notice symptoms after eating. Histamines Close to 100% of children with autism have histamine intolerance and mast cell activation. Histamines are released by the digestive tract and the brain in defense as an allergic reaction. In histamine intolerance the body is over producing histamines and there are too many for the body to break down. This stress type response is a trigger for mast cell activation which creates a strong inflammatory response in the body. Symptoms to look for in histamine reactions Symptoms from histamine triggers are both physical and behavioral. They can vary from itching, hives, rashes, sleep problems, anxiety, extreme mood changes, seizures, digestive issues and diarrhea to increased stimming and more. By reducing stomach acid histamines contribute to further issues with digestion working against your efforts to heal the gut, and is a common reason for GERD or acid back up. One reaction can happen without all of the others. This can make it hard to determine what the cause is. Try a low histamine diet for a week. If symptoms subside then it can be helpful in determining... Click Here or Click the link below for more details! https://naturallyrecoveringautism.com/181
Why is my child a picky eater and what can I do to improve his diet? I hear this question all the time. In fact, it's one of the most common questions I get so let's dive into some of the reasons why and what you can do about it. Diet can be tricky to transition for our picky eaters, especially those with autism, but there is hope. My own son was once a very picky eater and today he is not at all, and I've helped hundreds of parents transition their kids to healthier diets over time. Children and adults with autism can be stuck in their routines and have some obsessions around food, but there's even more to this. Some of the reasons why your child with Autism is a picky eater: The bad bacteria in their gut such as candida or yeast overgrowth thrives on the sugars and processed carbohydrates he eats. This makes him crave those foods. The problem is that when we feed the bad bacteria they get stronger. They are contributing to our child's gut staying ill and something called ‘leaky gut' which is where they have holes in the lining of their gut that allow undigested foods into the bloodstream. The immune system sees these and thinks they are a foreign agent to attack so each time it sees them it creates an allergic response and our child becomes allergic to that food. Leaky gut also contributes to poor absorption of nutrients from the food they are eating. Bad foods are inflammatory and keep the lining of the gut weak and easily permeable to breakage and more leaky gut issues. The gut controls the brain and up to 80% of the immune system, so we must heal the gut to heal many of the behaviors our kids have like irritability, sleep issues, lack of ability to focus, and poor immunity so they're not sick all the time. Gluten and casein are the proteins in wheat and dairy. They create opiates in the body so our kids are literally addicted to these foods. PANS is an autoimmune issue that many kids with autism have. You may notice high anxiety, fearfulness, and obsessive compulsive behavior (OCD). The OCD is also an obsession with the way they eat food or what foods they will eat. Target the root triggers. Viruses, mold, Lyme, candida, parasites, and toxins all contribute to keeping the gut ill, so all must be worked with. They also contribute to a PANS flare-up which keeps the OCD happening. Histamine intolerance is very high in people with autism. Histamines are released by the digestive tract and the brain in defense as an allergic reaction. In histamine intolerance the body is over producing histamines and there are too many for the body to break down. This stress type response is a trigger for mast cell activation which creates a strong inflammatory response in the body... [06:21] Carnivore Diet Journey: What Did Sarah Learn? • Dietary trends often follow a progression, but individual experiences may vary. • Prolonged adherence to extreme diets may lead to health issues and hormonal imbalances. • Pay attention to your body's signals and be open to dietary adjustments when needed. • Hormone imbalances can impact fertility and overall well-being. • Community support is valuable, but it's important to prioritize your health and listen to your body. [20:17] Leptin and Hormonal Impact • Leptin is a crucial circadian signaling hormone that influences various body systems. • Continuous ketosis and excessive fasting can lead to low leptin levels, affecting hormonal balance. • The dietary approach and meal timing can significantly impact leptin levels and overall health. • Avoid dogmatic dietary adherence and focus on individualized approaches for hormonal balance. • Leptin resistance can manifest as both high and low leptin levels, requiring different strategies for management. [27:21] Dietary Dogma: Metabolic Health • Avoid dogmatic dietary adherence; prioritize metabolic health and flexibility. • Embrace cyclical nutrition, considering seasonal and local foods. • Gradual reintroduction of carbohydrates can be beneficial for metabolic flexibility. • Incorporate light exposure, especially UVA and UVB, to support neurotransmitter balance. • Combining carb reintroduction with light exposure can help individuals transition without fear of binge eating. [34:44] Nutrition, Circadian Rhythm, and Red Light Therapy • Reduce sunglass usage during daylight to benefit from natural light exposure. • Carefully balance macronutrients, avoiding high-fat and high-carb meals together. • Utilize red light therapy on the abdomen to support gut health and hormonal balance. • Implement circadian rhythm strategies, such as grounding and blocking blue light at night. [40:37] Cold Plunges for Health • Cold plunges are hormetic stressors that should be approached with caution, especially for those with certain health conditions. • Start cold plunging at a higher temperature and gradually decrease the temperature over time to adapt. • Pay attention to how your body feels after cold plunging; if you feel energized, you've found the right duration and temperature. • Avoid cold plunges right after strenuous workouts, as it may slow down the natural muscle repair process. • Don't feel pressured to use your cold plunge daily; listen to your body's needs, and don't push yourself too hard, especially during times of high stress. [49:23] The Importance of Food Timing and Circadian Rhythm • Food timing should align with your body's circadian rhythm, with a focus on having most of your calories earlier in the day. • Eating breakfast and lunch, then skipping dinner can be more beneficial for weight loss, autophagy, and overall health. • Research suggests that the same meal is processed differently when eaten in the morning compared to the evening. • Cortisol levels, melatonin production, and leptin sensitivity are influenced by the timing of your meals, making morning eating advantageous. • Maintaining a healthy circadian rhythm, blocking blue light at night, and avoiding eating too close to bedtime can optimize the hormone balance in your body. [54:06] Breakfast Timing and Hormones: Finding the Right Balance • While eating breakfast can be challenging for some, the goal is to consume most of your daily calories earlier in the day, optimizing cortisol levels and insulin sensitivity. • The timing of meals affects the balance of hormones like ghrelin and leptin in the body. • Blue light exposure, especially at night, can disrupt hormonal rhythms and affect hunger hormones. • Scientific studies may vary in their findings regarding hormone levels, but real-world results and individual experiences should guide your eating schedule. • Monitoring how you feel, your energy levels, weight loss, mood, and sleep quality is crucial in determining the right breakfast timing for you. [06:16] Histamine Receptors and Allergies: A New Perspective on Health Disorders Allergic reactions can be immediate or delayed. The latter, often called intolerances, can occur hours after exposure to an allergen and can be harder to identify due to this delay. Histamine receptors are found throughout the body, not only in typical locations like the skin, sinuses, and lungs. Therefore, allergic reactions can affect various bodily systems. Health issues like interstitial cystitis, plaque in the arteries, and neurological conditions may have allergic components, meaning they may be triggered or worsened by allergies or intolerances. It's crucial to identify and minimize exposure to allergens, which can come from various sources, such as food, to mitigate these adverse health effects. This can be done through allergy and intolerance tests. Understanding the broader impact of allergies can lead to better diagnoses and treatments for various health conditions that might have been previously unexplained. [15:18] How Can You Manage Histamine Levels in Leftover Food? Check this out! Histamine, produced by bacteria, can accumulate in leftover food and may cause unpleasant reactions when consumed. This accumulation begins immediately after cooking and cannot be reversed by reheating. Refrigeration slows down histamine production by reducing bacterial activity. However, leftovers should be refrigerated immediately after cooking to limit histamine buildup effectively. Leftovers should be spread out rather than lumped in the fridge to speed up cooling and slow histamine buildup. This increases the surface area exposed to the cold temperature, helping the food cool down faster. Due to the potential histamine buildup in stored food, sensitive or reactive people may need to avoid leftovers until their condition is controlled. [17:37] What's the Effect of Vaccines on the Immune System that Makes a Significant Health Challenge? Long-term COVID-19 is linked to IgG4 disease, characterized by an immune system overreaction leading to tissue swelling and fibrosis. This previously rare condition is now seen more frequently due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related vaccines. Vaccines can trigger an immune response that produces spike proteins indefinitely, leading to continuous inflammation and fibrosis. This response lacks an "off switch," which presents a significant health challenge. To help manage this ongoing reaction, proteolytic enzymes, such as natto kinase and serrapeptase, may break down the spike proteins and fibrosis. Over time, lysosomes, the cellular "recycling centers," can become overwhelmed with proteins they cannot break down and gradually transform into "landfills." This shift may be a primary factor behind accelerated aging. The key to managing long-term health effects, particularly in COVID-19, is to support the body's protein digestion mechanisms and clean out lysosomes, potentially slowing the aging process. [26:16] What Dietary Adaptation Techniques Are Useful Over the Long Term? If you have a histamine problem, you can make significant improvements by modifying your environment and diet. Still, structural damage caused by inflammation from histamine may take longer to heal. Food reactivity is a spectrum, not a binary state. Some may be highly allergic to certain foods but only mildly reactive to others. Begin reintroduction with foods you are mildly reactive to. Over time, humans have selectively cultivated plants to have fewer toxins (anti-nutrients) and more desirable traits like sweetness. This has pros and cons, including the loss of some beneficial anti-nutrients. Some anti-nutrients can have medicinal value and defend against viruses, fungi, parasites, bacteria, and even cancer. Knowing which plants to avoid is crucial due to their high content of harmful anti-nutrients, like soy and spinach, which can harm our thyroid function and cause conditions such as kidney stones. A general guideline is to stay away from oxalates. [36:26] What's the Importance of Raw Meat and Protein? Raw meat contains a variety of proteins and peptides, which could be beneficial for anti-aging and overall health, which may be altered or reduced during the cooking process. Cooking meat releases glutamate, a flavor-enhancing amino acid, which can cause adverse reactions in some individuals, such as headaches or shaking. The cooking process can also lead to the creation of glycation products which can contribute to aging and other health issues. To mitigate the formation of glycation products during cooking, marinate your meat and cook with some acid, such as lemon juice. Recognize your sensitivity to glutamate. If you're not sensitive, you may only need to reduce your consumption of high-glutamate foods. If you are sensitive, more drastic dietary changes may be required for your well-being. [42:10] What's the Role of Olive Oil in Nutrient Delivery and Fuel Source? While olive oil has many health benefits due to its oleocanthal and polyphenols content, it does not necessarily negate its glycation content. Olive oil should be used in moderation, not as a main fuel source but as a nutrient delivery mechanism. This supports the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients from other foods. Balancing the intake of different food groups like low glycemic grains, beans, and fats can provide a more balanced energy source. Individuals who consume large amounts of oil may need to increase their protein intake accordingly. It's important to protect the lysosomes, cellular components involved in waste disposal, especially when consuming large quantities of a particular food. [51:53] What Are the Benefits of The Carnivore Diet? The microbiome plays a significant role in overall health and requires prebiotics for optimal function, found primarily in plant-based foods. Carnivore diets may be short-term beneficial but can lead to a lack of necessary prebiotics over time. Introducing a range of plant-based foods gradually can maintain a healthy microbiome. Lysosomes, the organelles in cells responsible for digesting fats and proteins, can become overloaded by misfolded proteins and hydrogenated fats, leading to neurologic conditions. Regular detoxification of metals and minimizing intake of misfolded proteins and hydrogenated fats can help maintain lysosomal health and aid graceful aging. Introducing substances like cyclodextrins can help maintain lysosomal health by clearing out hydrogenated fats and misfolded proteins, especially for individuals following high-fat diets like keto or carnivore diets. This week on ReInvent Healthcare, I tackle Histamines. I explore its underlying causes, symptoms, and how functional medicine offers a holistic approach to address this complex issue. Join me as I navigate the intricate pathways of histamine metabolism and discover evidence-based strategies to restore balance and promote overall well-being. Listen to the full episode to learn more. IN THIS EPISODE:Histamine IntoleranceThis refers to a condition where individuals experience adverse reactions to histamines in the body. Histamine intolerance can manifest as symptoms such as migraines, nasal congestion, hives, insomnia, and difficulty tolerating fermented foods. Histamine intolerance occurs when the body is unable to break down histamine efficiently due to a deficiency in enzymes like diamine oxidase (DAO) and histamine methyltransferase (HMNT).Causes and Factors of Histamine IntoleranceThere are several possibilities for the underlying causes of histamine intolerance. Genetic variants can affect the body's capacity for breaking down histamine. Imbalances in gut microbes, leaky gut syndrome, and mast cell activation can contribute to increased histamine production. Chronic exposure to allergens or harmful chemicals can also lead to higher histamine levels in the body. How To Manage HistaminesTaking antihistamines may not be the best solution. Several strategies can help manage histamine intolerance. These strategies include addressing nutrient imbalances, such as ensuring sufficient intake of vitamin B6, vitamin C and quercetin, which support histamine regulation. Certain supplements like DAO can aid in breaking down histamine. It may also be helpful to follow a low-histamine diet, avoiding high-histamine foods like aged cheeses, fermented foods, and leftovers. Additionally, supporting gut health, managing stress, and adopting a healthy lifestyle can contribute to reducing histamine intolerance symptoms.References:Get our FREE Guide to Taking a Detailed Health History that gets you to root causes with Access Additional Resources for Practitioners ready to improve clinical outcomes through our Nutritional Endocrinology Practitioner Training. In this episode, I am breaking down a popular topic in the wellness world: histamines! I get a lot of questions about histamine intolerance and if people should cut out x, y, z foods. As usual, I don't recommend going straight to cutting out foods. Can that help in the short term with symptoms? Yes, but it's not getting to the root of the issue. This doesn't mean you can't cut out certain things that are causing you discomfort to get some relief, but hopefully this podcast episode will inspire you to work on other areas as well. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Sierra: Hi Dr. Cabral! For awhile now I have been experiencing dizziness and light headedness when walking around inside certain stores, however once I leave the store I feel better. I've read about it being a vestibular disorder and this condition being recognized as “supermarket disorder” or “visual vestibular mismatch”. Although it affects me the most when I'm inside stores, it also affects me when I play certain video games as well, or when I'm around a lot of people. This affects me 50% or more of the time. My question is, do you have any recommendations that may be able to help subdue the affects of this condition? Thank you! Kelsey: Hello! I am wondering if you can clarify the difference between a "Reacted" supplement versus an "Elemental." I work at a place that sells practitioner grade supplements and my boss asked me if I knew the answer to that. I did not, but I thought of someone who would be better able to clarify! :) You, of course! Thank you for your help! Anonymous: Is it possible for an overload of histamine to affect female hormones and cause estrogen dominance as a secondary effect? I am asking because we recently had "oakpocalypse" here in Houston (tree pollen above 12,000, which was double the previous all-time high record), and I was having symptoms of high histamine, but I also started having some symptoms of estrogen dominance (no other life or dietary changes in that time period other than the extreme allergen exposure) - when I googled this quickly, I found some articles off the bat that suggested histamine could increase estrogen, so I wanted to hear your expertise and any recommendations for what someone should do if this happens (other than your standard allergy advice ex. Vit. C, quercetin, bromelain, preventing allergens from entering home, Nettie pot, etc.) Karim: What would you say is worse, Coke Zero or glass of wine? Hahaha. Sorry if it sounds silly but I'm just interested in your point of view. Marnie: Hi Dr Cabral-I will be having an Inspire implant placed for sleep apnea. I will be having antibiotics perioperatively and postoperative. What must I do to protect my microbiome? Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge. You are a Godsend! Jordan: Hey Cabral! This is kind of an odd question. I have been having extremely frequent sleep paralysis and muscle numbness ever since I got covid.
