Bob Clark's 1983 film A Christmas Story has become a holiday classic, but for most kids born in the ‘80s, a Red Ryder BB gun was not at the top of their wish lists. We wanted something a little more high-tech - the Nintendo Entertainment System. HBO Max's latest original film, from Goon director Michael Dowse and novelist Kevin Jakubowski, updates this age-old tale for the millennial crowd, with hefty chunks of The Goonies, Home Alone, and The Princess Bride thrown in to make sure that no nostalgic stone is left unturned. Now we're blowing on our cartridges and booting up 8-Bit Christmas for our last movie review of 2021! For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. From the studio that brought you Elf, Neil Patrick Harris narrates what we call the “Nintendo Christmas movie”. Directed by Michael Dowse, 8-Bit Christmas is the Christmas comedy film from a screenplay by Kevin Jakubowski, based upon his novel of the same name. Set in suburban Chicago in the late 1980s, the story centres on ten-year-old Jake Doyle's (Winslow Fegley) herculean quest to get the latest and greatest video game system for Christmas.
In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing 8-BIT CHRISTMAS (2021), currently available on HBO Max. From the book and screenplay by Kevin Jakubowski and directed by Michael Dowse; the film follows Jake Doyle (masterfully embodied by the lovely and talented Neil Patrick Harris) in the present as he bonds with his daughter, Annie (Sophia Reid-Gantzert) over the story of the Nintendo Christmas, his friends, family and all the hilarity that ensued in the holiday season. Winslow Fegley is 80s Jake and Steve Zahn turns in a sweet performance as John Doyle, Jake's Dad. An absolute fun and delightful holiday/family film - go see it STAT! The film has a run time of 1 h 37 m and is rated PG. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.

Michael Dowse, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the United States Tennis Association, joins Jed Hughes after the recent completion of the U.S. Open in New York City. Episode #64 features a look back at the 2020 Open affected by the pandemic and the 2021 edition that welcomed back fans, but maybe not all of the biggest stars in the sport. Daniil Medvedev held off grand-slam-seeking Novak Djokovic to win the men's singles title. Meanwhile, Emma Raducanu captured the women's singles title in history fashion. Dowse discusses his leadership style and formula for the USTA's overall vision and its strategy for the growth of tennis participation at all levels, while also ensuring diversity throughout the sport. In fact, the sport has seen a growth of 4 million players since 2019.
Witten by Evan Goldberg and Jay Baruchel, directed by Michael Dowse, and starring Seann William Scott, Jay Baruchel, Liev Schreiber, Eugene Levy, and Alison Pill, amongst others, "Goon" boasts a fantastic comedic team. Surprisingly, the film depends most of all on the charm and fists of its breakout lead, an actor known first and foremost by the name of the infamous character he played in "American Pie": Stifler. Seann William Scott is pitch-perfectly cast in the role of Doug Glatt, a boorish Massachusetts bouncer who goes viral after head-butting a minor league hockey player so hard during a brawl in the stands that the guy falls flat on his back and his helmet breaks. Called up to be an enforcer in the minor leagues to protect the PTSD-stricken all-star LaFlamme (Marc-André Grondin), Glatt brings an earnest, brutish, zealous spirit to his team, the Halifax Highlanders. And he does so with zero finesse or talent: so clumsy on the ice, he can barely skate across the rink without stumbling. Somehow tender and vicious at the same time, the screenplay and Scott's performance both manage to delicately reconcile his Hanson Brothers'-like outbursts of sportive violence with his morally upright, puppy-eyed sensibility that is equally lovable and every bit as iconic as Rudy. At once a pariah in the eyes of his snobbish / wealthy / successful Jewish family, and a folk hero to his teammates and local Canadian hockey fans, Doug soberly and humbly heeds to his new calling as a bodyguard on ice: even as it leads him to a life of black-eyes, bruised fists, and missing teeth. Blood-spattered, profanity laced, and ardent-hearted, Goon is a grandiose modern sports opera that is not to be missed! And neither is our deep dive podcast conversation, where we cover everything from the deeply entrenched and unspoken code of goons, to the paradoxical morality of sanctioned hockey violence, to the fanatical subculture of hockey addicts. Enjoy!
"In the last few months, literally millions of people have discovered our sport and they're out playing tennis for the first time." This week, the TENNIS.com Podcast is excited to bring in special guest, USTA CEO Mike Dowse. Dowse started his role at the USTA in January of last year, just in time for the craziest year in tennis history. While it's been a challenging year for everyone, tennis—particularly at the grassroots level—saw a boom in participation. Since tennis is naturally a socially distanced sport, three million new players were able to pick up a racquet in 2020. Overall, there was a 22 percent increase in participation with over 21 million players. As a former college player and the current leader of the USTA, Dowse has helped cultivate and support tennis at all levels and has been at the forefront of decisions made to help grow the game. He was thrown into the fire during the US Open when the USTA navigated uncharted territories by hosting a Grand Slam in New York City, the most recent epicenter of the pandemic. He shares what went into making the impossible happen in New York, and how he expects the 2021 US Open to look like later this year. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Like many organizations across the sports industry, the United States Tennis Association experienced a rough but also rewarding 2020, characterized by layoffs and a restructuring of the large organization, but also the successful hosting of the 2020 US Open. SBJ’s Bret McCormick is joined by Michael Dowse, the CEO and executive director of the USTA, on this episode of Unpacks.

What If udkom på dansk blu-ray fra Scanbox d. 8. januar. Hør mere om filmen i podcasten og læs om blu-rayen på bloggen.
