In this episode of Leadership on the Links, host Tyler Bloom sits down with Gina Rizzi, a leader in sustainability and inclusion in the golf industry. Through Radius Sports Group, ARCUS Marketing, and VRA Connect, Gina drives environmental stewardship, economic impact, and diversity. We'll discuss her role in developing state-level best management practice (BMP) guides and creating the first Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report. Gina also introduces the BMP Hero platform, a groundbreaking tool simplifying BMP guide creation and helping golf courses showcase environmental leadership. Additionally, Gina highlights her diversity efforts, such as PGA Vendor Match events and the VRA Connect platform, which supports over 5,000 diverse suppliers. Finally, we'll explore her work in economic impact reporting and the engaging “Turf Busters” segment, which busts industry myths with a mix of technical insights and humor. Let's dive into this impactful conversation with Gina Rizzi. What You'll Learn in this Episode: Sustainability and Marketing Expertise: Gina Rizzi leads Radius Sports Group, ARKIS Marketing, and VRA Connect, focusing on sustainability, marketing, and inclusion within the golf industry. BMP Hero Platform: Recently launched tool that streamlines the creation of facility-specific best management practice (BMP) guides for golf courses. Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives: Rizzi's efforts aim to connect new communities with golf industry opportunities. Technological Advancements: Golf's environmental and economic impact reporting is becoming increasingly sophisticated. Soundbites: “It's really about inclusiveness—making sure anyone who wants to be part of the industry has the opportunity, increasing awareness, and giving people a fair chance.” (22:10) "The BMP Hero platform is a game-changer, simplifying a process that used to take hours into just 30 minutes." (25:13) Key Quotes: “There's a lot of focus on DEI in the news right now. Speaking personally, as a female business owner, I would never want to receive business just to check a box because I'm a woman. I want to earn it based on merit. The same applies to the workforce. I wouldn't want to get a job just because of my gender—I want to be hired because I'm the best person for the role, period.” “The goal is that if all facilities can have their BMPs, then this is something that the RGCSA can share with legislators and hopefully prevent them from having to undergo these types of irregular kinds of rules and laws or legislation between cities." “When we talk about inclusion in the workforce, it's about reaching out to local markets, schools, colleges, universities, and associations—connecting with people in non-traditional areas, beyond just sports management programs.” Links and Resources Mentioned: Website: https://www.radiussportsgroup.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ginarizzi/ Email: Gina.Rizzi@radiussportsgroup.com

Episode OverviewIn this episode of Leadership on the Links, we sit down with Jeff White, CGCS, outgoing President of the GCSAA (Golf Course Superintendents Association of America). Jeff shares his journey from local chapter leadership to the national stage, offering insights into industry leadership, workforce development, environmental advocacy, and the future of golf course management. Jeff reflects on his experiences, challenges, and the lessons he's learned while representing golf course superintendents worldwide. Listeners will learn: Leadership Growth: Transitioning to national leadership roles requires adaptability, strong support, and offers significant professional development. Member Engagement: Clearer storytelling and in-person experiences are key to showcasing GCSAA's value and engaging members. Workforce Development: Raising career awareness and offering dual pathways (education and training) are critical for attracting new talent. Environmental Stewardship: Expanding BMP adoption and active policy participation protect the industry's future. Global & Post-Leadership Insights: International experiences broaden perspectives, while planning and mentorship ease transitions after leadership roles. Soundbytes: "It's been an awesome ride. It's been everything I thought it would be and more. When I say 'more,' I mean managing the balancing act of scheduling everything—family, work, GCSA, and so on. As you progress from being a junior board member to higher levels, you build a foundation. It's similar to serving on a local committee or task group; you think you're prepared for the next step, but once you get there, you realize there's a steep learning curve. Representing 20,000 members is an incredible responsibility, and I've grown so much along the way." (0:12) "One lesson I've learned throughout my career is to be yourself—there's only one 'you.' I've also come to value listening as a skill. Communication is a two-way street. Great leaders know how to listen, really listen, and distill everyone's thoughts into something cohesive. I've admired those who can wrap up a discussion with a single sentence that brings people together.” (38:06-40:00) Quotes: "Listening isn't just about hearing words—it's about understanding the message. That's an area where I'm still growing, but I've seen how valuable it is for solving tough conversations and holding a group together." "I think the Career Pathways initiative is on a solid upward trajectory. It's exciting because it represents the here and now, and I've seen a lot of initiatives evolve over my time on the board. This one still has room to grow—it's not in its infancy, but it hasn't fully matured either. It's something that will always evolve. “I'm passionate about the BMPs (Best Management Practices). It's not a question of 'if' but 'when' these will become essential. Many people don't understand BMPs yet, but they're incredibly versatile tools. Whether you use them for internal purposes, like designing a wash station, or for outward-facing goals, like advocacy with local or national governments, they provide tremendous value. "We need more people to embrace BMPs proactively instead of reactively. I've seen other countries where regulations were imposed because they weren't at the table during discussions. Collectively, we're working to protect the game, the environment, and our industry. Progress since 2020 has been slower than I'd like, but we're moving in the right direction." "Recruiting Soil to Tackle Climate Change: A Roadmap for Canada" is a 2022 report by the Soil Conservation Council of Canada and the Compost Council of Canada aimed at helping more people put carbon into soil and keep it there. The world's soils have lost an estimated 133 billion tons of carbon since the beginning of agriculture 12,000 years ago. This loss represents a substantial opportunity for climate-change mitigation via carbon sequestration in soils. The challenges to building soil carbon, however, include socio-economic, political, and cultural barriers. Healthy soil microbial communities build carbon, while also generating societal benefits like clean water, but managing for soil health means adopting best-management practices (BMPs) that often run counter to perceived economic advantage and long-established cultural norms. Soil-carbon sequestration is a “no regrets” approach, applying landscape-based solutions to climate change. It can be implemented at a relatively low cost per tonne of CO2e, and it has numerous co-benefits, such as increased fertility, cleaner water, and greater farm profitability. Moreover, the science behind these statements is not disputed. While there is some disagreement between scientists around the details, even the most conservative among researchers and academics recognize that the potential for building soil carbon levels is real and worth the investment. In fact, soil health is a topic that has been receiving a growing amount of attention worldwide over the past few years The Soil Conservation Council of Canada and the Compost Council of Canada released the final report in April 2022. The Roadmap is a call to action and a plan for Canada to create a partnership with soil and with soil managers. And that will deliver significant benefits – for generations to come. We have three special guests this time and a jam packed episode all about stormwater management! We talk extensively with Mark Rufener (PE, CPESC, CPSWQ) from K.E. McCartney & Associates (a local engineering firm) regarding "The Gateway Project", Kingwood Center Garden's capital plan to create a new garden entrance and visitor experience, completed in the last few years. As part of this plan, Kingwood integrated several stormwater BMPs (Best Management Practices) into the new visitor center and parking lot. Mark Rufener is a professional in stormwater infrastructure engineering and management and played a large part in the design of these BMPs. He also worked closely with another Mark (Hoover) who is Kingwood's lead horticulturalist (translating as "plant wizard"). Mark Hoover was in charge of selecting the plant material to be used in some of the BMPs, because as you'll discover, plants play a critical role in stormwater management. Additionally, Evan caught up with Dan Herrold who is another technician at Richland SWCD. Dan heads up the MS4 program there, which ties into what we talk about in the rest of the episode. Abstract: The protective and absorptive functions of the intestinal epithelium rely on differentiated enterocytes. Their differentiation is orchestrated by sub-epithelial mesenchymal cells producing ligands along the villus axis, in particular Bmps and Tgf{beta}. Here we show that individual Bmp ligands and Tgf{beta} drive distinct enterocytic programs specific to villus zonation. Bmp4 is expressed mainly from the center to the upper part of the villus, and it activates preferentially genes connected to lipid uptake and metabolism. In contrast, Bmp2 is produced by villus-tip mesenchymal cells, and it influences the adhesive properties of villus-tip epithelial cells and the expression of immunomodulators. Hence, Bmp2 promotes the terminal enterocytic differentiation at the villus-tip. Additionally, Tgf{beta} induces epithelial gene expression programs similar to that triggered by Bmp2. Bmp2-driven villus-tip program is activated by a canonical BmpRI/Smad-dependent mechanism. Finally, we established an organoid cultivation system that enriches for villus-tip enterocytes and thereby better mimics the cellular composition of the intestinal epithelium. Altogether our data suggest that not only Bmp gradient, but also the activity of individual Bmp drives specific enterocytic programs. Copy rights belong to original authors. Abstract: Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP) are an important family of growth factors playing a role in a large number of physiological and pathological processes, including bone homeostasis, tissue regeneration and cancers. In vivo, BMPs bind successively to both BMP receptors (BMPR) of type I and type II, and a promiscuity has been reported. In this study, we used bio-layer interferometry to perform parallel real-time biosensing and to deduce the kinetic parameters (ka, kd) and the equilibrium constant (KD) for a large range of BMPs/BMPR combinations in similar experimental conditions. We selected four members of the BMP family (BMP-2, 4, 7, 9) known for their physiological relevance and studied their interactions with five type-I BMP receptors (ALK1, 2, 3, 5, 6) and three type-II BMP receptors (BMPR-II, ACTR-IIA, ACTR-IIB). We reveal that BMP-2 and BMP-4 behave differently, especially regarding their kinetic interactions and affinities with the type-II BMPR. We found that BMP-7 has a higher affinity for ACTR-IIA and a tenfold lower affinity with the type-I receptors. While BMP-9 has a high and similar affinity for all type-II receptors, it can interact with ALK5 and ALK2, in addition to ALK1. Interestingly, we also found that all BMPs can interact with ALK5. The interaction between BMPs and both type-I and type II receptors immobilized on the same surface did not reveal further cooperativity. Our work provides a synthetic view of the interactions of these BMPs with their receptors and paves the way for future studies on their cell-type and receptor specific signaling pathways. Frank and Ken review the high- and lowlights of the journey and the work that lies ahead to actually adopt BMPs across the country, not just talk about and publish them! Ken’s journey has been celebrated by many in the golf industry and it's clear he has found that personal and professional compass he sought a few months ago!
The Connect to Protect Tour pedals on with Ken Benoit on ride day 13 (total day 15) and closing in on 1300 miles as he puts his leg up for a few days in IA with Tim Gravert. BMPs of water use reduction and pollinators are highlighted on these course visits and just as much learning going on internally for Ken as a “niggle” turned to a “bark” from his Achilles tendon. Adjustments to the pedaling stroke are being made, new and old friendships made and renewed, and a positive journey hopes to continue into Nebraska. In fact, Ken’s looking for a course visit in the Cornhusker State! Join Ken as he enters the great grasslands of the US at ecoturfconsulting.com.
This week the Turfgrass Hotline. is tracking the Connect to Protect Tour, a 3000 mile bike journey by my friend, Ken Benoit, CGCS. Ken is the President and Founder of EcoTurf Consulting and a long time golf course superintendent conditioning golf courses for 25 years. Ken, an avid and experienced cyclist, is riding 3000 miles in 30 days with 40 lbs of gear on the Connect to Protect Tour, highlighting best management practices for water quality protection across the US. His goal is "to raise awareness within the golf industry of the importance for golf course facilities to adopt BMPs and to demonstrate, to people outside the golf community, golf’s dedication to preserving and protecting water quality, pollinators and wildlife habitat." For Ken this is as much a personal journey as a professional one. We recorded this interview on Monday August 17, right before Ken headed from State College to Westerville, OH, a 112 mile ride. Follow Ken's travels on his YouTube channel (Eco Turf Consulting) Twitter feed (@ecoturfconsult) and Instagram (@eco.turf.consulting).

Rachael: For years, the Everglades Agricultural Area has drawn much controversy over the environmental concerns regarding water quality in South Florida. Stuck in the middle of that controversy is agriculture. Florida Farm Bureau’s Gary Ritter shares some of the challenges that farmers and ranchers are facing in the EAA. Gary: “The challenges today’s EAA farmers and ranchers face are linked hand in hand to the storied history of the Everglades, their partnership in Everglades Restoration and population growth. This all started back in 1994 Florida Passed the Everglades Forever Act mandating EAA farmers meet a 25% reduction in phosphorus through the implementation of on-farm BMPs. For the past 25 years, EAA farmers have met or exceeded their 25% reduction goal averaging 55% reductions during that time period and this past year a 70% reduction. Rachael: What are some of the techniques that farmers and ranchers have in place to help in the Everglades Restoration? Gary: Farmers use Best Management Practices in three categories: Water Management, Nutrient Management and Sediment Controls. Let’s take a look at all three. Water conservation and management practices are implemented to retain runoff by optimizing on-site storage, based on rainfall levels. Nutrient management through soil testing includes uniform applications of fertilizer with soil amendments at the plant root zones while maintaining setbacks from waterways. Sediment controls reduce erosion of canal banks and swales by maintaining vegetative buffers. In addition crop rotations and rice production has helped improve soil loss in the EAA area. Rachael: Gary helps dispel some of the myths regarding the phosphorus levels of the Everglades. Gary: The myths are generally from a misinformed public that believes water from EAA farms is back-pumped into Lake Okeechobee and somehow winds up in the coastal estuaries. Actually, farmers in the EAA treat water from Lake Okeechobee sending it south into the water conservation areas. Rachael: How important is it to understand other contributors to the health of the Everglades? Gary: Farmers have been a partner in the restoration effort for decades. However, success truly means all of south Florida has to be united and engaged with our farmers…this means citizens and industry along with the state of Florida and the Federal Government.”

Prioritizing Green Infrastructure Investments November 29, 2011 FCommunity decision makers are increasingly looking at installing green infrastructure to address stormwater issues. To be able to retrofit private property with such natural stormwater solutions, there needs to be a mechanism that can gain private sector involvement and investment. One approach is to use an auction system, where landowners learn about the economic value of stormwater best management practices (BMPs) and then participate in an auction to bid on what BMPs they are willing to pay for. Megan Lewis, AICP, of Cardno JFNew, and Sabina Shaikh of RCF Economic and Financial Consulting, described a project conducted for the City of Valparaiso, Indiana, to help that community prioritize stormwater BMP installation in a specific neighborhood.
