On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back breaking down how the former Trojan football players fared in the 2023 NFL Draft. Day one of the draft was an exciting one for sure with three quarterbacks selected in the first four picks and two running backs going before the first wide receiver was selected. At pick No. 20 Seattle selected Ohio State wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, starting a historic 4-pick run of wide receivers that included Minnesota snagging USC wide receiver Jordan Addison with the 23rd pick. With the selection of Addison, USC has had a first-round pick in the last four drafts and in six of the last seven years. This is the 22nd consecutive year -- the longest active streak for any college -- a Trojan has been selected in the top three rounds. On the second day of the draft two more former USC football players came off the board. In the second round with the 54th selection the Los Angeles Chargers picked defensive lineman Tuli Tuipulotu, allowing the nation's sack leader to stay home in LA to start his NFL career. Standout USC cornerback Mekhi Blackmon was taken with the No. 102 overall pick to close out the third round. He joins former teammate Jordan Addison in Minnesota. The third day of the draft had one more Trojan go off the board. The Baltimore Ravens selected Andrew Vorhees No. 229 overall, using their seventh-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft on the powerful offensive lineman who tore his ACL during the NFL Combine. Several players also signed as undrafted free agents after the draft. Defensive lineman Brandon Pili signed with the Miami Dolphins, offensive lineman Bobby Haskins signed with the Chicago Bears, wide receiver Terrell Bynum signed with the Los Angeles Chargers and running back Travis Dye signed with the New York Jets. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler also reported that tight end Josh Falo was invited to Jets rookie minicamp. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Where Coach Harvey Hyde ranks USC's 48-45 win over UCLA in Mount Rushmore of Rose Bowl games

Peristyle Podcast - USC Trojan Football Discussion

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 20, 2022 56:23

This week on the Peristyle Podcast Coach Harvey Hyde and Ryan Abraham give their thoughts on a very special game for the USC football team, not just for the young Lincoln Riley era, but for the history of the Trojan football program and the Rose Bowl itself. After falling behind 14-0 early on, Riley and the Trojans fought back thanks to the arm of Caleb Williams, the legs of Austin Jones and the turnovers forced by USC's opportunistic defense, none bigger than former five-star Korey Foreman's interception of Dorian Thompson-Robinson during UCLA's last minute comeback attempt. The guys also talk about how injuries impacted the game with the loss of one very important player, running back Travis Dye, and the return of what turned into another very important player, wide receiver Jordan Addison. With Dye out for the remainder of the season Jones knew he would have to step up and he used Dye as inspiration, writing the No. 26 on his wrist in tribute to his fallen teammate. Jones didn't disappoint, rushing 21 times for 120 yards and two touchdowns and adding four catches on as many targets for 57 yards. And after a quiet return against Colorado last week Addison broke out big time, catching 11 passes on 13 targets for 178 yards and a 35-yard touchdown that Williams dropped perfectly into his arms down the right sideline. After the game the rush of emotions from players and coaches out on the field were tangible. The Trojans took the high road during the week and didn't make any comments about their hatred towards UCLA or what they planned to do, unlike DTR, who declared they would put up 60 on USC like they did last year. The guys took all of that in and let their play speak for itself Saturday night and when it was over there was an outpouring of emotion everywhere you looked. Players gathered around the Victory Bell taking their turns to ring it, putting up four's-down hand signals and joining in with the Trojan Marching Band as they played Tusk almost on repeat after the game. There were also long embraces between players and coaches including guys who had difficult journeys in their USC playing career to get to a place this high. Foreman stands out for sure, but guys like Kyle Ford and Tuli Tuipulotu and Calen Bullock who were on this 4-8 squad last year and are enjoying every minute of what Tuipulotu called their "revenge tour." Somehow in Riley's first campaign at Troy he has his squad in the Pac-12 Championship game after his 10-1 overall start and 8-1 in conference and there is even more to play for beyond a conference title. His Trojans, with a win over Notre Dame next weekend, will likely be playing for the program's first College Football Playoff berth in Las Vegas. If USC wins out and finishes Pac-12 champions at 12-1, it seems highly unlikely that the committee would leave the Trojans out. There is still a long way to go, but for all of this to be on the table in Riley's first campaign is remarkable. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! This week on the Peristyle Podcast Coach Harvey Hyde and Ryan Abraham talk about USC's 55-17 win over Colorado in the Coliseum on Friday night. The Trojans needed to build some momentum heading into the rivalry games and they were able to do that with a 38-point win, but it came with a cost, losing running back Travis Dye for the rest of the season. Dye went down with a leg injury in the second quarter and had to be carted off the field in an air cast. After the injury he was surrounded by every single player on the team, showing their support for one of the unquestioned leaders on this squad. Coach talks about what Dye meant to this program and how they will try and fill the void at running back going forward. Coach also talks about why it is great winning on a Friday night, allowing you to watch the rest of your opponents play on Saturday from the comfort of your own couch. He says it was also a great opportunity for this Trojan defense to play with an overmatched opponent and give that side of the ball some confidence and momentum heading into a tough test against UCLA this coming weekend. Speaking of UCLA, with Oregon's loss head coach Lincoln Riley knows his Trojan squad can make the Pac-12 Championship game if they take care of business Saturday evening in the Rose Bowl. A win over the Bruins guarantees a trip to Las Vegas for USC and an opportunity for a conference championship after last year's 4-8 season. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back in studio LIVE talking about the Trojans 30-14 victory over Washington State, bringing their record to 6-0 at the halfway mark of the regular season. The guys talk about what went right in the game (defense, run game, special teams) and what wasn't clicking (passing game), injuries and what the players and head coach Lincoln Riley and defensive coordinator Alex Grinch had to say after the win. Defensive lineman Tuli Tuipulotu has been an absolute beast this season, securing three more sacks and four more tackles for loss against the Cougars over the weekend. Travis Dye also had a monster night on the ground with nearly 150 yards and another touchdown. They also breakdown what they saw and heard from USC's Tuesday morning practice of Utah week and give some early assessments of what USC can expect for a difficult road test in Salt Lake City. JT Sports gives his College Football Week 6 reactions. UCLA got a big win at home defeating Utah 42-32. The Bruins improve to 6-0 on the season, their best start since 2005. With 2 consecutive wins against Top 25 opponents, UCLA Football is now starting to put the nation on notice. Utah had no answers for Zach Charbonnet rushing for 198 yards, one touchdown, and averaged 9 yards per carry. Is UCLA the best team in the PAC-12? USC beat Washington State 30-14 at home. USC's defense came up big with 5 sacks and 9 TFLs. At 6-0 has USC finally proved they're a team capable of making the College Football Playoffs this year? Washington State played well in the first half going into halftime down 17-14 as QB Cameron Ward threw 2 touchdowns. In the second half however, Washington State struggled on offense and couldn't sustain drives. USC relied heavily on Oregon transfer Travis Dye who had 149 rushing yards and a touchdown on the night. USC Football will travel on the road to take on Utah in their next game. Will the Trojans prevail again? Tennessee embarrassed LSU in Death Valley, 40-13. Things went left for LSU right away, as they fumbled the opening kickoff. Tennessee would then make quick work of the short field and from that point on Tennessee dominated the whole afternoon. A week before they play Alabama, was Tennessee sending a statement in their dominant win over LSU? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jtsports/support

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back in studio LIVE talking about the Trojans narrow 17-14 victory over Oregon State up in Corvallis. It was a bit of a role reversal for Lincoln Riley's squad with the defense leading the charge while the offense sputtered most of the night, getting things going just enough in the final quarter to pull out the victory. On the defensive side Alex Grinch and his squad held OSU to just 14 points and one of those Beaver touchdowns came on an extremely short field when Oregon State started at USC's 22 yard-line in the fourth quarter. The defense again came up with some key stops but also again forced turnovers, this time it was four interceptions including the game sealer by Max Williams with just seconds left on the clock. Remarkedly the Trojans defense have forced a turnover on 33% of opponents drives this season (14 overall turnovers). Offensively everyone is wondering (including us) why quarterback Caleb Williams was struggling so much. The offense looked out of sync with plays breaking down faster than expected and when they didn't Williams seemed to rush anyway. The main highlight was Oregon transfer running back Travis Dye who had his 3rd-straight 100-yard performance as a Trojan. The offense does have an excellent shot at getting back on track this weekend with Pac-12 foe Arizona State coming to the Coliseum. If ever the USC offense needed a "get right" game it was this one and the Sun Devils are so bad they will likely accommodate. They also breakdown what they saw and heard from USC's Tuesday morning practice of Arizona State week and give some early assessments of what USC can expect with ASU in town. However, with the AFC North getting tougher, could Joe Burrow and the Bengals be in for a Super Bowl hangover? With New Head Coach Brian Kelly, what are the expectations for LSU Football in 2022? With the Quarterback battle between Jayden Daniels, Myles Brennan, and Garrett Nussmeier remaining undecided after spring camp who will be starting Week 1 for LSU? This team does have a lot of talent at wide receiver, cornerback, and the defensive line but the biggest question mark is the offensive line. In a crowded SEC West, how good will LSU Football be this College Football season? The Detroit Lions went 3-13-1 in their first season under Head Coach Dan Campbell. This NFL season the Lions are looking to improve after drafting DE Aidan Hutchinson and WR Jameson Williams in the first round while also signing a couple of under-the-radar Free Agents such as DJ Chark and DeShon Elliot. JT Sports discusses the chances of the Detriot Lions making the playoffs in 2022. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jtsports/support

On this week's Inside the Trojans' Huddle, panelists Marc Kulkin, Chris Arledge, Erik McKinney, and Greg Katz review the spring game with emphasis on the offense and defensive performances. In addition, the panel reacts to the spring game atmosphere and how the game came across on ESPN. Also, “Musings with Arledge” commentary, the NFL draft as it pertains to USC draft eligible players, and viewer questions and panel answers. Among the specific conversation topics: The panel evaluates the spring game offensive performances of quarterbacks Caleb Williams and Miller Moss, the running back productivity of transfers Travis Dye, Austin Jones, and Darwin Barlow, the wide receivers/tight ends led by Mario Williams, the efficiency of the offensive line, and the general overall impressions of Lincoln Riley's offensive schemes and concepts.  On defense, the panel discusses the overall defensive scheme and its spring game effectiveness. , The panel responds to Saturday's defensive performance: encouraging or discouraging? The panel raves about the play of the defensive lineman Tulo Tuipulotu. There is overall discussion on the depth of the front seven from what was seen in the spring game and what needs to be added to the talent pool. The panel also gives their overall review of the secondary led by several youngsters against a talented group of USC recievers. The halftime discussion revolves around the spring game Coliseum attendance numbers and the atmosphere of the game in front of live fans. What was it like at the Coli and how did the game perception come across on ESPN.  After the “Lighting of the Coliseum Torch” between the third and fourth quarter of “Inside the Trojans' Huddle”, it's again time for the always entertaining and sometimes controversial “Musing with Arledge” with Chris Arledge, whose topic this week is Pac-12 officiating and Saturday's spring game targeting call that wasn't. Arledge gets off like nobody else can. Fasten your seatbelts. The panel also gives their thoughts on the upcoming NFL draft and which Trojans will be smiling and which players will be faced with a dose of hardcore reality. Obviously, wide receiver Drake London gets high predictions, but what about the other draft eligible players like running backs Keaontay Ingram and Vavae Malepeai? And what about outside linebacker Drake Jackson, is he a wildcard in the draft process? Who will be draft winners and draft disappointments? And, of course, in the “Overtime” period, it's viewer questions and panel answers with a question about the Trojans NIL and assistants coaches. #USCTrojans #USC Football #CFBNews #USC Subscribe for more USC football coverage: www.on3.com/teams/usc-trojans/ USC Trojans videos from Los Angeles, California from the staff of WeAreSC. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino return to the studio to put a bow on USC's spring football game in front of a Coliseum spring game record crowd of over 33,000 that was shown live nationally on ESPN. Head coach Lincoln Riley wanted to showcase all of the work the players and coaches put in over the past five weeks and in our opinion they accomplished that objective. The entire atmosphere around the Coliseum was extremely welcoming with events for all of the fans in attendance and the product on the field was also intriguing, with two live 15-minute halves of football that gave the feeling of an actual game. The new players were finally introduced to Trojan fans (and the media) and everyone came away from the game with a better understanding of who those players are and how this team could potentially look when they kick off against Rice on September 3. Quarterback Caleb Williams came in with a lot of hype and he delivered, throwing a pair of touchdown passes to his former Oklahoma teammate Mario Williams. Former SEC linebackers Shane Lee and Romello Height also made positive impressions with their play on the field and leadership off of it. Former Pac-12 stars like former Oregon running back Travis Dye, former Stanford running back Austin Jones, former Colorado wide receiver Brenden Rice and former Washington receiver Terrell Bynum all looked good wearing Cardinal and Gold, giving the Trojans more weapons and more depth while draining some of the talent from the rest of the conference. The guys also dig into the pending NCAA Transfer Portal deadline of May 1, looking at some of the players Riley could potentially add before fall camp starts and how fast and furious things could get over the coming weeks and months. Ryan and Chris will be doing regular podcasts together going forward, so make sure you send in your questions addressed to them at podcast@uscfootball.com. On April 14th, former Oregon State wide receiver Zeriah Beason put his name into the transfer portal. After drawing interest from the Georgia Bulldogs and SMU, Beason has chosen to remain in the Pac-12 and join HC Jake Dickert up in Pullman to play for Washington State. Beason cited the Cougars' air raid attack for a reason why he decided on Washington State, and he should have a chance to be an immediate contributor for Coach Dickert and OC Brian Smith. Many expect, and rightfully so, that as Lincoln Riley settles into his new job with USC he will have no issue recruiting high-caliber offensive skill position players. The Trojans landed a commitment from a 2023 4-star RB from the state of Texas, Quinten Joyner. With Oregon RB transfer Travis Dye only eligible to play for one season with USC, it's a position that Lincoln Riley needed to address. USC Football's 2022 recruiting class ranks 65th nationally, behind even their in-city rival UCLA--a trend that we should not expect to continue in the coming years. UCLA football announced a 2033/2034 home-and-home series with Northwestern. To become a respected football conference, the Pac-12 certainly needs to regularly schedule (and ultimately beat) power-5 non-conference opponents--even if CFB scheduling is inherently odd. Northwestern Football isn't the worst team the Bruins could schedule, but it would have been nice to see UCLA aim for a higher overall quality of program as they look ahead to the future. Oregon Football's season ended with a disappointing 47-32 loss in the Alamo Bowl to Oklahoma. But...despite the frustrating game, there were several positive takeaways for Duck fans as they look ahead to the 2022 season. Among those encouraging signs, something Spencer alluded to before the game might be an important thing to watch. For an Oregon defense that allowed over 500 yards and 47 points, there are in fact things to look forward to for Duck fans on that side of the ball. Plus, Travis Dye showed why he is such a talented back throughout the entire game--and part of his success is thanks to his offensive line, which could be a premier strength for the Ducks next season. The Dawgman.com interns - Jack McCauley and Intern Emeritus Luke Mounger - post their thoughts on Washington's upcoming game with Arizona State, but they first start out with the fallout from Washington's 26-16 loss to No. 4 Oregon. The loss was tough enough to swallow, but UW Head Coach Jimmy Lake was suspended for a week after a sideline altercation with linebacker Ruperake Fuavai after a kickoff. Lake's suspension came on the heels of Lake firing offensive coordinator John Donovan after the game. Do the guys think Lake will get one more chance to coach, or are his days on Montlake numbered? And who would have seen this kind of a program meltdown at UW from the 2019 Rose Bowl on? Moving to the ASU game, Jack asks what seems to be the most relevant question for Washington's defense going in: if Travis Dye went for over 200 yards against UW, and ASU's Rachaad White ran for over 200 yards in his last game, why would the Sun Devils ever pass? And if Jayden Daniels does decide to step back and heave it, who should UW target to get past on ASU's offensive line? And who do they need to be aware of as far as the Sun Devil receivers? Jack breaks it all down for you. Moving to the other side of the ball, Luke talks about ASU's experience on defense, as well as their depth. They are wedded to their 4-3 front, and have been incredibly successful using it. But it's their linebackers that are really their heart and soul. But are they vulnerable? Are there places where a Washington offense led by the new play-calling of Junior Adams can take advantage? And how does UW's offensive line match up at the line of scrimmage? Luke and Jack give their thoughts on this, and you're going to want to listen all the way until the end for this! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Dawgman.com interns - Jack McCauley and Intern Emeritus Luke Mounger - break down what they've seen from the Oregon Ducks so far this season and how they match up against the Washington Huskies going into Saturday afternoon's game at Husky Stadium. Luke tackles the Ducks' offense first, focusing with his take on their quarterback, Anthony Brown. He also touches on their offensive line and the skill players the Ducks should rely on to move the ball against Washington, namely Travis Dye, Johnny Johnson, Devon Williams, and Mycah Pittman. How will the Huskies try and stem UO's potent run game? They've had difficulty all year stopping good run offenses, but has the emergence of younger defenders like Carson Bruener and Voi Tunuufi help change that trend? And can Washington's pass defense, which has been really good all year long, continue to hold up and force Oregon into some uncomfortable down-and-distance situations? Do they resemble any other teams the Huskies have faced?  Moving to the other side of the ball, Jack breaks down Oregon's players of note on their defense, starting with defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux. He also mentions Keyon Ware-Hudson, Popo Aumavae, and Brandon Dorlus as other defensive linemen to pay attention to. Moving to linebacker, Noah Sewell is the man in the middle for Oregon. He also talks about Oregon's secondary, including Mykael Wright, DJ James, Verone McKinley, Jamal Hill, Steve Stephens, and others, where they are the No. 10 pass defense in the Pac-12. Are there some holes in the Ducks' defense that Washington can exploit? Jack and Luke go into some of the UW players that would need to have big days to keep up with the No. 4 Ducks, as well as schemes and plays they expect to see from the Huskies to combat UO's defense. And they think the weather could be a factor too. To finish up the preview podcast, Jack and Luke give their confidence levels for a Washington win. There's no question if the Huskies were able to defeat Oregon it would be considered a big upset. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Orange County Register UCLA football beat reporter James Williams talks about the frustrations in the Oregon game and previews the Utah game coming up. We  talk miss field goals and DTR. (0:00-2:06) Jorge Medina and James Williams talk about UCLA fans giving up on their team heading for the exits after the third quarter. They were looking like Dodgers fans in the playoffs.  We ask why are they giving up on their team. Are there expectations too high. (2:07=6:07)  Did the Nick Barr Mirra field goal that was called a miss on the field, actually go through the uprights. And why wasn't there a replay.  After watching it live, Medina thought it was in. And also was asking what the heck just happened. (6:08-9:50) UCLA came out like gang busters against Oregon. Medina was feeling confident that they Bruins came out with a winning mentality at home like they do on the road, and still can't figure out what happened to them. Travis Dye scored 4 TDS on only 37 yards. What kind of stat is that. And if not only for an Anthony Brown long run, they would have held Oregon under 100 yards rushing.(9:51-11:45) Lake couldn't find the line of scrimmage which hurt the Bruins chances of keeping that big lead and winning the game. It was a tough game for him. (11:45-13:33) Oregon's Kayvon Thibodeaux changed everything about that game and proved why he one of the most feared defensive monsters in the game. He is a Game Changer. Noah Sewell also wreaked havoc on the Bruins offense.(13:34-17:28) Dorian Thompson Robinson's health status going into the Utah game. He missed practice on Monday. He showed up  but did not throw a ball. James Williams has him as questionable, but thinks he is going to play. He showed up at No.1 on the QB depth chart for the week.(17:29-21:20) The fourth quarter was one of the weirdest of the season. Mark Cristobal had berated the refs to not call things in the second half.  UCLA put together one of the best drives of the seasons without any help from the Ref's.(21:21-24:23) Why are they so night and day at home and on the road. That could be the story of there season. (24:24-29:21) Does UCLA still have a shot at the PAC12 South Title. Both Williams and Medina think yes, but the key is that they need to beat Utah this week for it to happen. Both Utah and Arizona state have loseable games going into the final stretch  And if UCLA can stay with league losses, they are still in it.(29:22-31:06) What it is going to take to beat Utah this week. Can they stop the run of the Ute's. Will their QB destroy our secondary that seems to play better on the road.(31:08-33:20) UCLA stopped running the ball against Oregon after they went up big. They need Zach Charbonet and Brittain Brown  (33:21-40:00) This loss to Oregon has deflated all it's fan base. This team is just so frustrating to follow and cheer for. It is not like Oregon dominated and beat the Bruins. In some ways they just beat themselves again. The team tweets out support for their teammates and coach(40:01-47:22) Predictions for the Utah game.Follow us on twitter at Jorge Medina @funkycoalmedinaJames Wiliams @JHWReporterSomething's Bruin Podcast @SomethingsBruin

Junior running back Travis Dye comes from a very athletic family, with football being the sport of excellence for the family. But it wasn't always that way. And when football became the go-to sport for the family, a lightly recruited Travis decided to come to Oregon to play with his brother Troy, who was a Duck star in his own right. He excelled early in Eugene, mainly due to his desire to live in his own light and not his brother's shadow. His excellence has continued, and in 2020, he led the team in rushing and was the only player in the Pac-12 to record at least 400 yards rushing and 200 yards receiving. Dye's time at Oregon has enabled him to gather wisdom beyond his years and a mentality that allows him to be free and clear on the football field to achieve things he didn't think he could accomplish.
