Despite a supposed “pause” in attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, Russian airstrikes against Ukraine continue. Meanwhile Trump's much-touted call with Putin showed no evidence of moving negotiations forward. Is a genuine ceasefire possible or is Putin displaying his ability to manipulate events yet again? Sam Greene, professor of Russian politics at King's College London and director of democratic resilience at the Centre for European Policy Analysis, talks to Gavin Esler about the peace negotiations, the Trump/Putin dynamic and what could happen next. • This episode of This Is Not A Drill is supported by Incogni, the service that keeps your private information safe, protects you from identity theft and keeps your data from being sold. Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return behind the microphones for another episode of the Helium Boys Podcast, a serious non-serious USC football podcast. The Helium Boys are back to break down another disappointing USC loss, this time with a slightly different script but with all the familiar elements as the Trojans held a fourth-quarter lead on the road only to relinquish the lead and not be able to find the end zone for the game-winning score. They also look forward, giving their thoughts on what to expect following Lincoln Riley's decision to bench Miller Moss in favor of Jayden Maiava. The episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill' that features Shotgun discussing the anniversary of a classic Helium Boys road trip as well as the Women of Troy getting a gutsy season-opening victory in the Aflec Oui-Play event in Paris. Chris then takes the 'Two-Minute Drill' reins to tell an epic story of trying to find food after the conclusion of the USC-Washington game. Chris and Shotgun then dive into their Stock Up/Stock Down segment looking at the players and themes that saw their stock rise or dip this week. Zachariah Branch had one of his best games this season while young pass rushers Sam Greene and Kameryn Fountain continue to earn more opportunities. Maiava's stock is obviously on the rise as he takes over the reins of the USC offense and the Trojans' run game, when given a chance, continues to excel recently. On the flip side, the Trojans' saw some weak points at right tackle as well as one of their cornerback spots. Those and Riley's playcalling are focused upon in the Stock Down portion. After a break, the podcast duo answer your mailbag questions discussing young players that could become starters next season and USC women's basketball's dramatic win in Paris. The episode concludes with Chris quizzing Shotgun with some Take It or Leave Its about the Trojans and what stood out from Shotgun's trip to Paris. Power Lines: From Ukraine to the World

Getting in the mind of Vladimir Putin is a notoriously difficult, and indeed thankless, task. Russia analysts have long tried to predict what the Russian President and the Kremlin he dominates is thinking, but often to no avail. It was shown in the surprise by so many when Russia's full scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, and continues as the war has dragged on. But this week on Power Lines, we're doing our best to do just this. We'll look back at the differing cultural and political outlooks of the West and Russia since the fall of the Soviet Union, exploring whether there is something uniquely antagonistic about the Russian psyche, or if it comes from a gulf in understanding between the two civilizations. We'll also look at today, to see whether Russia is benefitting from the current instability engulfing the globe. To find out more, this week we speak to Sam Greene, one of the world's preeminent Russia analysts. Sam is the Director for Democratic Resilience at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA), as well as a Professor of Russian Politics at King's College London, where he founded and directed the King's Russia Institute for ten years. Having lived in Moscow for many years, and with a number of seminal books about the country and its politics under his belt, he was perfectly placed to try and dissect the enigma that is the modern Russian state. Russia's war against Ukraine has brought about a radical restructuring of the Russian political economy, placing transformative ideology and outright coercion firmly at the heart of power. Despite this, the war and its consequences have produced remarkably little resistance. This discussion delves beyond the dynamics of coercion and ideology, to investigate how the war has interacted with Russians' "vernacular knowledge" about power and powerlessness. This knowledge has thus far remained resilient to the cognitive challenges posed by the war, underpinning a social resilience that both enables the state's internal and external aggression, and limits it. - Sam Greene is professor in Russian politics at King's College London. His most recent book, co-authored with Graeme Robertson, is Putin v the People: The Perilous Politics of a Divided Russia (Yale University Press 2019). Alongside his work at King's, Sam is an Associate Fellow of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, a Trustee of Pushkin House, and Editor-in-Chief of Russian Politics & Law.

Podcast: The Week Ahead In Russia - Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty

As Russia's invasion of Ukraine entered its second year, Russian President Vladimir Putin signaled that it won't end soon and U.S. President Joe Biden vowed to support Kyiv for "as long as it takes." Sam Greene, a professor at the Russia Institute at Kings College London, director of democratic resilience at CEPA, and co-author of the book Putin Vs. The People, joins host Steve Gutterman to discuss Putin's speech and what to watch for as the war grinds on.

Orlando City‘s week didn't start out so hot with a 4-1 thumping in South Florida putting the Lions outside the playoff picture, looking in. Facing a must-win game with neither starting center back due to Antonio Carlos' suspension and Robin Jansson's season-ending surgery, Orlando fell behind at home against Columbus and things were looking bleak. Then everything changed. Junior Urso and Benji Michel each pulled off perhaps their best touch of the ball all season in the second half against the Crew, leading the Lions back. Urso took care of his own finish, while Michel's shot drew a penalty for handball on Milos Degenek that Facundo Torres converted. Ultimately, after the officiating crew figured out who was supposed to be on the pitch for stoppage time, Orlando City clinched a postseason berth for the third consecutive year, jumping over the Crew. We've got our analysis of both matches and our selections for Man of the Match. There are plenty of accolades go go around. In less pleasant news, the Orlando Pride finally got a resolution to the investigation into Amanda Cromwell and Sam Greene. It did not go well, as allegations against both for verbal abuse, favoritism, and retaliation were substantiated and both are out of a job after their contracts were terminated by the NWSL. It's a black eye for the club and you can't say the hire had zero red flags, but this was still an unexpected end to a short coaching tenure. The Pride are looking for their next head coach and they must find someone who places the highest value on integrity, but who can also coach. We wish the Pride all the luck in the world with the search. The USWNT has had a terrible time in Europe over the last week and we touch on that a little but it too is a bit depressing at a time we want to be happy. This week's mailbag asked us to make Orlando City upgrades in the off-season, which team we would have chosen for a first-round match-up, and more. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Finally, we previewed Orlando City's visit to Quebec this Sunday, where the Lions will face CF Montreal in a first-round MLS Cup playoff match. We gave our key match-ups for the game and made an attempt to predict the final score. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 315 went down: 0:15 - The Lions split two matches and squeaked into the playoffs. It was bad before it was good. And now there's a chance at another trophy, albeit a longshot. 48:27 - The Pride are without a head coach and the search is on after Cromwell and Greene were found to have abused their positions. The USWNT may be getting paid like the men but we wish they wouldn't have started to play like them. (OK, that was too mean. Sorry.) 1:04:39 - The mailbag is pretty full this week and we give our key match-ups and score predictions for Montreal. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Penn State football is still searching for several important pieces for the class of 2023, but with football season drawing closer, those conversations may be on hold for the moment. The BWI Daily Edition: Recruiting Show is back to discuss a new offer, preview an exciting week of high school football, and more.  Host Greg Pickel and recruiting insider Ryan Snyder start with Penn State's latest offer this month. St. Francis defensive lineman Sam Greene is the latest defensive line prospect that the Nittany Lions have reached out to recently. Snyder discusses what he knows about Greene and his relationship with the staff.  Next, they discuss notable regional and national high school games coming up this weekend. Several include prospective targets for 2024, such as Rico Scott, Omillio Agard, and Tyseer Denmark. Others have 2023 committed prospects like St. Joes Prep taking on King Mack, Conrad Hussey, and St. Thomas Aquinas in Florida. Finally, Pickel gives Penn State fans the time and YouTube channel to watch three-star quarterback Jaxon Smolik face rival, Southeast Polk, in the first game of the season.  Finally, the pair discuss which committed 2023 prospect they're most interested in watching play this fall. Several players need to take important field steps to round their recruiting profiles. So, which analyst is interested in seeing what progress Anthony Donkoh has made? What about J'Ven Williams? Orlando City hasn't played in a while but that's all about to change. With two matches this week, we're all about to fill our need for seeing the Lions on the pitch. Since last week, there's been some news on the injury front. The bad news surrounds Homegrown goalkeeper Mason Stajduhar, while the better news pertains to Benji Michel and Antonio Carlos. We've got all of that for you, plus the new way we'll be watching MLS games starting next season. We also talked about a clown who advanced to the World Cup at the expense of our own dear octopus, Pedro Gallese. The Orlando Pride played in Chicago this past weekend and things didn't go well, although they could have gone worse in Seb Hines' debut as acting manager of the squad. The investigation into Amanda Cromwell and Sam Greene goes on and so do the losses for the Pride, although this one was certainly much more competitive than the last one in Houston. We talk a little about the Pride goings-on but mostly we lament what is turning out to be another season to forget. OCB fell on the road but Jack Lynn just keeps finding the net, so there's at least something positive going on with the Young Lions, who are waiting for some players to return from international duty. Lynn's record pace for OCB continues and we're here for it. This week's mailbag asked us if we've read any good books lately, and it turns out that we have. There was also a question about Stranger Things Season 4 that we stuck at the end for those who aren't ready to be spoiled. Don't worry, we give you plenty of warning before we launch into any spoiler territory. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. After a quick chat about the USMNT's win over Grenada (the El Salvador match happened after we recorded), we gave our key match-ups and predictions for Orlando City's trip to New England and home game against Houston.

Save Meduza!https://support.meduza.io/enMost weeks, it's fair to say that you could probably roll your eyes at a 30-minute podcast about the inner workings of executive power in Russia. But the issue is suddenly urgent. Two days ago, Vladimir Putin delivered his annual state-of-the-nation speech, where he surprised the country by calling for Constitutional amendments that would radically redistribute power in the Russian state, possibly weakening the presidential administration. And then his entire cabinet resigned, and long-time Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev was moved (some would say demoted) to a new number-two spot on Russia's Security Council. While you never really need an excuse in Russia to talk about Vladimir Putin or the Kremlin, the inspiration for this episode of “The Naked Pravda” was Andrey Pertsev's October 2019 story about Sergey Kiriyenko, Putin's current first deputy chief of staff and the supposed manager of Russia's domestic politics. But the article is more than a Kiriyenko profile. It offers a broader look at his office in the Kremlin and at the Putin presidential administration itself, which remains enormously hard to comprehend, even two decades after Putin first took office. To understand the mechanics of Kremlin analysis, or Kremlinology, host Kevin Rothrock turned to some of the brightest political experts around. In this episode: (3:51) Maria Lipman on Kremlinology's shortcomings (5:42) Konstantin Gaaze says Russia's state ideology was designed accidentally as a “life hack” (8:10) Brian Taylor on the presidential administration's relationship with Russia's Constitution (22:28) Yana Gorokhovskaia says the proposed reforms will weaken Russia's super-presidential system (24:14) Sam Greene highlights the newfound importance of the State Council (25:58) Mark Galeotti explains Dmitry Medvedev's new home: the Security Council “The Naked Pravda” comes out on Fridays.
