Precautions: LA County is requiring masks for all folks (regardless of vaccination status) inside. Most of our event is inside, so we will definitely require masks. We will also require proof of vaccination or a recent negative covid test (within a week) for entry into the live experience. We are keeping our in-person audience small (we are capping attendance at 100, but may have fewer) and will work to provide as much space as possible for physical distancing in our large ballroom. We will continue to follow the guidelines and mandates from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, and we will keep you apprised if there are more updates. Please note that we will always be at or more conservative than the state and local guidelines, so please don't hesitate to reach out if anything is unclear. Connect with us! And we just wanted to pop in here for a moment and tell you about Therapy Reimagined 2021. Talk about exactly how this conference is going to go down. And this is our first chance to really talk about it in any depth beyond just kind of the Hey, go check out our website that we usually throw at the end of our episodes. Katie Vernoy 00:43 Yeah, I am so excited. So the virtual is going to be very similar to what it was last year where we have awesome conversations, speakers in the chat, we have our discussion lounges where you can pop in afterwards and ask questions for the speakers. And, you know, some virtual networking and our social wall. But this year, I am so excited that we are going to have a small group of us back in person in Los Angeles Sheraton Universal. And I think that's confusing some people. Curt Widhalm 01:17 It's first a chance to come and hang out with some really cool people. If you have not been to one of our live experiences before. This is an energy that is not seen in many other therapist conferences, now a lot of engagement of the people who get to be there. And a lot of really good learning skills that we make, our presenters have to follow a lot of good experiential activities. People just leave buzzing year after year. And we missed it last year because of the pandemic. And for our in person, people this year, you get the chance for a hybrid conference and being able to kind of put into words, what that means is, you get the wonderful experience of a live conference, as well as the virtual conference. And once again, we're making it to where our live, people end up getting access to the stuff that's on the virtual platform through the end of 2021. We have a wonderful app that we've been working on behind the scenes, we had it last year for the virtual conference this year, we're going to build on that for our live experience people as well, you virtual folks, you'll you'll still get the same opportunity to be on the app and interact with people. But through all of the background work that we're doing, anybody who's coming live will also get all of the virtual experience as well. Katie Vernoy 02:47 And I think the thing that's really exciting is that we'll have folks who are attending the virtual conference from all over the country all over the world, and we can interact together, it's the same app. So we'll be in the chat together, we'll be on the social wall together. And then for the folks who join us live in Los Angeles, we have some of our speakers presenting live from the stage, that'll be live streamed into the virtual conference, don't worry virtual attendees, you'll get to see it. But those of you in person will be there, you can ask some questions, maybe they'll you'll even be pulled up on stage, it's going to be great. And then there's also extra time. I know one of the things that we always get feedback on. And I don't know how many times you've heard this clip, it's like we have too much packed in. And so on the live experience, we recognize you're going to make the trip to CES. And so we have extra space built into the schedule so that you can spend time with the speakers who are coming out, you can see that the partners that we have fully vetted and talk to them about what they are putting on, you can meet up with your colleagues and have a long lunch or lay by the pool or go over to Universal Studios. And there are receptions every single night, which is going to be so much fun. So with a focus on the live experience. Yes, there's education. Yes, you have access to all of the learning, but the focus is going to be on being together with other therapists. Curt Widhalm 04:14 So I know there's going to be some questions about how we're handling COVID. And we are fortunately not in the department of actually handling COVID ourselves but we are in the department of handling COVID protocols and our conference. So we know that things are changing by the day by the week. We will have all of our updates frequently on our social media and definitely on our website as far as what we're doing but we are going to do the strongest precautions that we can and that means that we will be following the guidelines from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health at the time of this recording about five weeks out from the conference. So we're expecting that there will be indoor mask mandates, we will be making sure that people are not congregating really close together will encourage social distancing and stuff as well. And we will continue to update everyone on if those guidelines change become stricter. We do encourage everybody who's got vaccines to be ready to show those vaccine proofs and you have time to get vaccinated now, if you're not in that club yet, but the main point on this is stay tuned to our communication channels. As far as where we're at with COVID, those things do end up changing by the day, and our social media is the best place to follow that. Katie Vernoy 05:48 And I know that it's, it's tough, because if you're worried about coming to an in person conference, we get it. That's why we're doing so many safety protocols. But that's also why we're doing a really awesome virtual conference alongside the in person activities. So if you want to join us, but you aren't ready to be in person with other modern therapists, check out the virtual conference are going to be a ton of activities a whole day of practical and business knowledge and interacting with our vetted partners. We've got the all of the content will be either live streamed or recorded so that you can then go in, interact with other modern therapists also get your continuing education where that's available. There's going to be so much fun. I honestly, you know, for folks who went to the virtual conference last last year, they said that they were shocked at how much it felt like the community coming together, even though we weren't physically sharing the same space. So if you have any questions, don't worry. We're available email events at therapy, reimagined, calm, but we'd love to see you there. We'd love to have you join us whether it's virtual, whether it's in person, we dismiss you guys, so come on out, it's gonna be great! Curt Widhalm 07:02 You can get your tickets at therapyreimaginedconference.com, and you want to get them especially if you're considering the live experience as soon as possible because there is an extremely limited number of these tickets. We've also put together our package of tickets that includes your hotel rooms, that way you're not having to go and seek out accommodations. We've got that rolled right into the price of the conference there as well. And we'll take care of getting you your room that way. All you have to do is show up and enjoy the therapy reimagined experience. Katie Vernoy 07:39 We hope to see you there. So excited for this yea! It's gonna be amazing!

Bonus Episode: Veta Belford19 Year-Old Veta Belford was dropped off by her father at her Home Depot job in Sacramento, California at 2pm on October 17, 2020. She was to work her shift there until her mom Agnes picked her up when her shift ended at 11pm. When Agnes arrived, Veta was nowhere to be found, and an employee told her that Veta was fired at around 4pm that day. Agnes was shocked and had no idea where her daughter was. It soon became apparent that Veta's personal belongings, laptop, wallet and ID, were still in Veta's room. Desperate for answers, Agnes hired an investigator who didn't help much leaving Agnes to do a lot of footwork on her own and following clues that led to a nearby bus station and a mystery Greyhound ticket to New York.UPDATE: As we prepared to release this episode this week, the last week of January,2021, Veta was found safe, and has communicated with her mom. Apparently, Veta chose to go missing of her own free will. We respect her right as an adult to go missing, and this episode serves as a good reminder that sometimes people who vanish do so willingly.

Podcast Episode 4: The Attack on Nonconformity in Athletics Pt. 1 (The Rant) *Explicit Language* I’m very excited to get into this episode because I’ve always wanted to unpack human variance especially how it shows up in relation to gender identity/expression. Visible differences in the human expression often cause people to be othered, discriminated against, pathologized, brutalized etc. Right now we are seeing the attack on human variance & non conformity in the world of women’s sports which is racist, sexist, transphobic and an overall gross violation of human rights. In particular this episode will highlight the stories of Caster Semenya & JayCee Cooper. Both Caster & JayCee have been thrusted into the spotlight and are helping to undo so dreadful policies that limit certain bodies (in particular trans and gender non conforming folks) from competing as their true selves in women’s sports. **Update** As of June 3, 2019 the Swiss Court temporarily suspends new IAAF rules per Caster Semenya's legal team. Therefore, Caster will not need to take testosterone-reducing medication to compete. Caster Semenya: is a South African Olympic track runner and two time gold medalist in the 800 meter. The Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a regulation that will require some female track athletes with naturally-elevated testosterone levels to lower those levels with drugs or surgery, if they want to compete in certain women's events on the international stage. JayCee Cooper: is a USA Powerlifter who was banned from competing in the Olympic Women’s Division because she identifies as a trans woman. Some additional subjects discussed in this Episode: **racism, gender essentialism and trans hatred in sports** **Why are we targeting folks in sports who are already so deeply targeted in other areas of society? **Mack Beggs trans man wrestler high school student (forced to wrestle against women) was already medically transitioning. Texas sanctions women’s wrestling. 2016 Texas Policy determining gender based on birth certificates for sports in colleges. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2018/feb/25/transgender-wrestler-mack-beggs-wins-texas-girls-title **Andraya Yearwood trans femme youth athlete track Connecticut. https://m.washingtontimes.com/news/2019/feb/24/terry-miller-andraya-yearwood-transgender-sprinter/ **Othering of trans women (trans women are women PERIOD!)There is no evidence to suggest that that trans are stealing anything. If you are good at the sport it is your athleticism which has nothing to do with the other athlete of their identity. **Why the mere existence of transwomen creates so much fear in society. **The conflation of body parts and gender **Sexist notion: that anyone assigned male at birth will automatically beat anyone assigned female at birth. **This informs how we discuss trans athletes, intersex athletes and women in general. **Testosterone not the “male sex hormone,” nor is it the key to athletic performance. **There is no such thing as *looking* transgender. **High profile female athletes (like Martina Navratilova) weaponize that notion and if gives more credence to the notion in the first place. It’s a false criticism of women’s sports in general. ***Notion of this influx of cis men posing as transwomen to gain unfair advantages in competitions. Also carries similar narratives to this fear of cis men posing as trans women taking over bathroom spaces. “In the US, there’s not a single reported instance of this kind of voyeurism occurring in states with legal protections for trans people.” https://www.vox.com/identities/2016/5/13/17938102/transgender-people-bathrooms-locker-rooms-schools

In my life, no matter what phase I might be going through, the things that inspire me usually stay the same. And by things, I mean the methods. In other words, I may grow in and out of styles or subjects, but how I find structure and grounding stays the same. For me it's solitude, and unobserved 'musing.' It's hard for me to stay focused when there are outside distractions, but particularly when I want to find that kind of inspiration. Whether it's social media, school, work, friends, family, it doesn't matter--there is always a need for me to take a moment and remind myself where my perspective lies. I've grown to truly appreciate those moments more as I've gotten older. If we aren't cultivating our perspectives, outside of external agendas, we can miss an imperative opportunity to bring our individuality forward. In art, and in anything, I think these moments are as essential as breathing. Update: As a correction to the audio recording, our screening in the New Jersey Film Festival will take place on Sunday, September 8th.
Update: As you all could tell, the show is officially back on the air. Stay up to date with all things superhuman at our new website EverydaySuperhumans.show! ----------------------------------------------------------- You might be wondering why Everyday Superhumans hasn't updated since May. Well it's time that you all get an explanation. Charlie and I had a long chat about the future of the podcast and have decided to put it in an indefinite hiatus. Between the two of us we've gotten so busy in our day to day lives that we haven't had a chance to work on the show. Outside of our work and social lives, Charlie is actively involved in several organizations and is attending an intense coding bootcamp. Meanwhile I am busy working with the City of Austin on a project I am very involved with, and working on a new podcast. Sadly there are so many hours in a day that we decided to call a long break on Everyday Superhumans. We would like to thank the following for making this podcast possible. Anna Hanstrom - Without her we would have never been able to extend our reach from podcasting to written content like the Superscripts and the Newsletter. In just her short time with the show we were able to grow so much. We wish the best for her and her future podcasting adventures! Joel Coffman - Who provided excellent camera work for our videos in featuring the Sustainable Food Center and We Are Blood. Jennifer Sneary - Who provided the editing work for our video series. You can find more of her wonderful work here. Lisa Apfelberg - Who is an overall wonderful person and served as an excelt advisor to the podcast. Adam Dodson - Who was a life saver and took up the reigns of graphic design from me and saved myself from the countless headaches it caused. Thanks man! You can check out his amazing work here. Austin Monthly - Who was wonderful to honor us with the Best Podcast of ATX 2017 award. And of course our guests and listeners for supporting us all along the way. We literally couldn't have done it without you. But I won't leave you empty handed. Below is a list of excellent resources to support you in your superhuman mission GivingCity Austin - A local online publication covering the news of all things nonprofit here in Austin, TX. The Plural of You - A podcast of similar scope to ours, but covers people all across the world working on interesting and challenging problems that need fixing. The 80,000 Hour Podcast - A personal favorite of mine. The show is all about how you can use your career to make the world a better place in the most effective way possible. Many small Restaurants use Credit Cards to pay for a lot of bills. With some really simple changes, you can make a really big difference in the kind of travel that you can take. We talk to Steve Hui from I Fly Flat. This is something that we do a pretty good job of, and I was able to get an upgrade to Business Class last year for our family as we flew from Melbourne to Singapore in December last year. This was an Epic experience flying Business Class with Qantas. Steve discusses a range of tactics that you can use fly in style around the world, just by changing some purchasing habits and maybe just even changing your credit cards. Travel is a really important part of life, I think. Experiencing different places, different cultures. To pick the right card, you want to match it to your suppliers. We talk credit card surcharges and some ways that you can negotiate down the credit card surcharge with some of your suppliers. Not many small business owners are doing this, but it can be a great way to start travelling, or to start travelling in style. We look at a way that you can increase the points that you get from making payments to the government, which can make a really big difference in your points balance. We talk about the experience as a Qantas Gold customer, which gives access to Lounges around the world. Grab a quick shower in between flights and some complimentary food and drinks before your next adventure. The kids loved the upgrade to Qantas Business Class. Important point - make sure that are paying off the credit card balance each month so that you are avoiding the expensive credit card interest. ** Update ** As we having been flying around the world seeing customers and studying Restaurant marketing, I have managed to make Platinum, which give you access to the First Class Lounge. “There are two kinds of cardiologists: vegans and those who haven't read the data.”Dr. Kim Williams, MD President, American College of CardiologyImagine four commercial airliners crashing every single hour of every single day of every single year. It's unfathomable. And yet that is how many Americans die from heart disease annually. In fact, an unbelievable 1 out of every 3 people in the U.S. will perish from this one disease.Meanwhile, 70% of Americans are obese or overweight. In the coming decade, 50% of Americans will be diagnosed diabetic or pre-diabetic. An economic disaster, 75% of all health care costs in America are attributable to these and a few other chronic lifestyle illnesses. It's devastating. And yet the most heartbreaking aspect of this crisis is that 80-90% of these illnesses are very easily preventable and often entirely reversible via some rather simple diet and lifestyle alternations. It's the food, stupid. This week I'm joined by Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn, the filmmaking dynamic duo behind the groundbreaking documentary Cowspiracy, to talk about their brand new follow up. Equally groundbreaking, What The Health explores the relationship between our food systems and big business, exposing the collusion and corruption that is making us sick, keeping us sick and costing us trillions in healthcare dollars.Whereas Cowspiracy explores the impact of animal agriculture on environmental health, What The Health focuses on human health. Perhaps the most important documentary you will ever see, it's a film about the power of special interest groups to drive unhealthy consumer spending habits. It's about environmental racism and the impact of animal agriculture on community health. And it's about why you need to rethink for yourself everything you've ever been told about the relationship between business and food, the impact of food choice on personal health, and your body's incredible, innate power to prevent, fight and even reverse the chronic lifestyle illnesses that are unnecessarily killing people by the millions.Starting March 16, the film will be available to watch worldwide at whatthehealthfilm.com – where you can also pre-order the DVD and cookbook as well as set up a screening in your town (I'm hosting one on March 29). In addition, for the first four days of the film's release (between March 16 – 20), Keegan and Kip will be donating half of all proceeds to Food Not Bombs – an amazing, for-purpose organization that feeds thousands of people free vegan meals across North America and the world.Kip and Keegan are truly breaking paradigms. Making the world a better place. And changing lives with what I think is the most important film of the year. A film that just might save your life or that of a loved one. I aspire to their level of courage and advocacy. And I sincerely hope you enjoy this exchange. On a final note, I'm hosting a private screening of What The Health on March 29 in Thousand Oaks, CA. Only a few tickets remain. To grab one, visit: whatthehealthfilm.eventbrite.com. [Update: As of March 16, all of the tickets are sold out].Peace + Plants,Listen & Subscribe on iTunes | See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Want to sell your home? Get a FREE home value report Want to buy a home? Search all homes for saleWhen homeowners are going to build or remodel something in their home, do they really need a permit? It might seem tempting to just skip this step, but as you’ll see, it can have some horrendous consequences.A client of mine is currently buying a home here in Washington. However, he needs to sell his home in Alaska first. Things were going just great until he found out that there was a problem with the garage he had built behind his Alaska home. The county found that the garage was built three feet into the setback from the property line. He had to go in front of the zoning board to ask for a variance to be able to sell his property with the garage. They said no.Now the owner has to take three feet off his garage, and that involves removing the stairs, the roof, and changing the foundation.“IT'S IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER ALL THE POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES. ” He thought he was making the right move because he was very handy and knew how to build a garage. What he did not take into account was that he needed a permit. If he would have spent the $100 or so to get the permit, he could have discovered the setback and updated his building plans accordingly. Now it is going to cost him more than $18,000 to remove three feet from the corner of his garage. We’re confident that we’ll be able to find a solution in the end, but the transaction is a hot mess right now. He’s wishing he got that permit right about now, and you would too if this happened to you.So, when you’re considering a remodel or home improvement project, ask yourself what the possible consequences could be. If they’re anywhere near the trouble that this seller had to go through, go ahead and get a permit. It will save you much more in the long run.UPDATE: As it turns out, this my client had originally gotten the permit for his garage. However, he changed the project plans after getting the permit and did not check with the county. He wanted the lines of the garage to match his house instead of the property line. So he turned the garage, and that's when the corner of the garage pushed into that setback. Since he didn't follow up with anyone about his permit after changing the plans, he's dealing with a lot of heartache along with the almost $20,000.
