Starting with visits on December 20th, guests who utilize the service can pre-register for the service virtually with a Cast Member. To do this, guests use a live video chat feature as early as 30 days prior to their visit, but no less than 2 days before arrival. Guests can then book up to two one-hour return windows for select experiences, per day in advance. In the future, Disney says that guests enrolled in the system will be able to same-day self-select an attraction, without having to visit with guest relations. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/12/07/guests-can-now-virtually-pre-register-for-disneylands-disability-access-service/ It was great to be able to ride it's a small world on it's first day of operation for the holiday season, but it took a lot of work to get it open! The Disney Parks Blog documented the process. The underground maintenance room of the attraction, known as “the pit” flooded on November 10th, while refilling was underway. Almost all of the ride control machinery is in the pit, and was submerged in at least 7 feet of water. Twenty different teams sprung into action to get the attraction working again. They set a timeline of 4 weeks to get it operational again. More than 200,000 gallons of water needed to be pumped out of the pit before teams could even begin to determine the damage. Teams worked to determine what could be cleaned and salvaged, and what needed to be replaced. Many of the spare parts which they could use were stored in the same pit. The team reached out to small world attractions around the world to get the needed parts. They met the goal of under 4 weeks and reopened the attraction on December 6th. The first hour or so worked well as we were able to buy our Genie+ service, and make a couple of Lightning Lane reservations for Guardians and Midway Mania. We were even able to mobile order some food and have a lot of PhotoPass photos taken. About an hour into the day, the entire system went mostly unresponsive. The free Genie service to plan the day only displayed an error, and reservations for Lightning Lane attractions could not be made. Even the Lightning Lane+ pay-per-attraction options were not available. However, around 5pm, the system seemed to come back online and continued to work for us perfectly until the end of the night. Even the couple hours the next morning, the free portion of the service seemed to be working well. – https://www.micechat.com/309918-disneyland-update-genie-fail-entertainment-holiday/ If, like us, you were in the parks on December 10th for the launch of Genie+, and you used the service, you may have received an email from Disneyland. The email states that they are “working to provide recovery” for the launch. Next to the Star Wars Trading Post, there are two new displays for The Book of Boba Fett, the new Disney+ show coming later this month. The right side of the walkway to ToonTown has finally come out from behind construction walls and has been revealed to be an ADA access ramp. New gold Disney Ambassador Alumni name tags have been created that take their inspiration from Walt Disney's Disneyland employee #1 badge. The Cast Members voted to accept the current contract, which will offer $1 per hour retroactive to June 16, 2021, $1 per hour starting June 16, 2022, but being pulled forward to November 17th, 2021, and a final $1 per hour on June 16, 2023. Cast members who were hired on or before June 16, 2001 will get $2000 for fulltime and $1000 for part time, one time payments. Cast members hired between June 17th, 2001 and June 16, 2011 will receive $1000 for full time and $500 for part time, one time payments. All adults will be eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine in Texas beginning Monday, March 29. However, Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has directed vaccine providers to prioritize people 80 years old or older when scheduling appointments and accommodate anyone in that age group who presents for vaccination, whether or not they have an appointment, by immediately moving them to the front of the line. That will ensure vaccination of anyone 80 or older with as small a burden on themselves as possible. On Monday, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare reported 421 new cases of coronavirus and 6 new deaths. That brings the statewide total to 175,657 cases and 1,916 deaths. Starting today, Idaho residents ages 55-64 with certain pre-existing conditions are eligible to get vaccinated. Starting March 22nd, all Idahoans in that age group can schedule an appointment. The state is still vaccinating those who qualified in previous tiers, so if you’re 65 and older, it’s not too late. To pre-register for a vaccine, visit covidvaccine.idaho.gov and then a provider in your area will contact you to make an appointment.

The new category — labeled 1C — means that vaccine availability is ramping up across the state.

This weekend is going to be the start of things feeling even more like spring. According to the National Weather Service on Saturday it will be a bit warmer than the day before, with a high of 46 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area and mostly sunny skies. Then it will bounce quite a bit higher on Sunday, with a high temperature of 56 degrees and also mostly sunny skies. It will be a little windy on Sunday, with wind speeds of 10 to 15 mph gusting as high as 20 mph. By early next week we should be enjoying high temperatures in the sixties. Starting March 8, Iowans younger than 65 will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine if they have underlying medical conditions that put them at an increased risk of severe illness from the coronavirus. The Iowa Department of Public Health made the announcement late Thursday in a news release, saying the decision comes after several counties have reported nearing completion of distributing the vaccine to other priority populations. Previously these populations had focused primarily on those above 65, those in healthcare professions, and other frontline workers. If news of this came as a surprise to you, you are in good company. Several local public health departments told the Gazette they were pivoting their COVID-19 vaccine distribution plans on Friday and will continue this work through the weekend. This comes after they were surprised to learn a change would be taking effect on Monday for a plan they had just heard about the night before. For some counties, this will mean a change in messaging over who is eligible, while for others they have decided to stick with serving their priority populations first, regardless of the state's directive. A civil trial against the City of Cedar Rapids and a white police officer who shot a Black man during a 2016 traffic stop, leaving him paralyzed, remains on track to start next month in Linn County District Court. Lawyers for Jerime and Bracken Mitchell, who filed the lawsuit in 2017 after Jerime Mitchell was shot Nov. 1, 2016, had a pretrial conference Friday with lawyers for the city and for Lucas Jones, a former Cedar Rapids police officer. Jones shot at Mitchell three times after a drug-related traffic stop escalated. One of the bullets hit Mitchell in the neck, paralyzing him. A Grand Jury at the time decided against bringing charges against Jones, who was later dismissed from the police department for a different incident. Cedar Rapids high school students will get to walk across the stage for their diplomas during in-person graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2021, the district announced Friday. The ceremonies for Jefferson, Kennedy and Washington high schools will be held in the Alliant Energy PowerHouse, formerly known as the U.S. Cellular Center. On Friday, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare reported 240 new cases and no new deaths, bringing the statewide total to 172,827 known cases and 1,876 deaths. The state launched a new vaccine appointment pre-registration system today. Idahoans can now go to covidvaccine.idaho.gov and register their names, then they will be contacted by a vaccine provider in their area when it’s their turn. Starting March 15, the next group of workers will be eligible for vaccination, including workers in the food and agriculture industry, grocery and convenience store staff, and other designed essential workers. The Covid Vaccine Advisory Committee is working on recommendations for who will be in the next phase of rollout. The committee proposes an alternating schedule between age groups and those with high-risk health conditions.

According to the image, posted by Hank Scribner, the car was charging at 174 kW (569 V and 306 A) at 43% of State of Charge (SOC). Over the previous six minutes, the car received 15.562 kWh, which translate to an average of almost 156 kW." says InsideEVs: "Anyway, the 800 V batteries in the new cars from Hyundai Motor Group (Hyundai, Kia and Genesis) should be really strong in terms of charging rate. When the German manufacturer first announced the ID.3 and its three battery options (48 kWh, 58 kWh and 82 kWh), it turned out that only the two first would be 5-seaters. The larger battery version was a 4-seater (without panoramic roof option), reportedly because of the weight limitation." says InsideEVs: "It was not good news for the all-electric compact, but now it seems that the issue was somehow solved, as the German configurator offers a 5-seat, 82 kWh battery version (77 kW usable). Three ID.3 (82 kWh) versions are offered, but only one with five seats. Starting March 4th, the VAPA office will be physically open from 8AM-3PM daily. Please be sure to make an appointment if you need to stop by, pick up technology, and/or turn in any forms. Appointments can be made by calling the school at 323-357-7531. Please be sure to download the daily pass app for screening and adhere to LA County Public Health guidelines such as wearing a mask. The daily pass app can be downloaded at dailypass.lausd.net On March 8, we will resume in-person tutoring, on a limited basis on campus daily from 2:30-3:30 pm. Tutoring is 1-1 and once a week. Please all the office at 323-357-7531 to reserve a tutoring time. All students must have a negative COVD19 test, and follow all CDC guidelines including mask wearing. At this time our plan is to resume sports conditioning and practice for some teams on March 8, pending final guidelines from the district. WHAT IS NEW WITH CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION CANADA Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s New Name CIC now Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) -transition is slowly taking over and now we are seeing virtually all communication coming back as IRCC versus CIC. -CIC website has not yet changed. I considered registering the domain name for IRCC as soon as the change was announced, but I’m not really in the business of being a domain squatter. -IRCC website has been really slow lately…..possibly due to rollover to new domain  New Electronic Travel Authorization Coming into Effect  Starting March 15, 2016, visa-exempt foreign nationals who fly to or transit through Canada will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).  Exceptions include U.S. citizens and travellers with a valid visa.  Entry requirements for other methods of travel (land, sea) have not changed. See: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/eta.asp  - Apply electronically through MyCIC portal: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/eta-start.asp  $7 fee  -huge problem brewing  - You cannot apply for an eTA if you are: a Canadian citizen or a dual Canadian citizen, a Canadian permanent resident, or a U.S. citizen. (However, lawful permanent residents of the U.S. need an eTA if travelling by air.) - What if your PR Card is expiring and you need to travel. -Current PR Card Processing times are at 171 days: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/ -what if you need to travel and need your PR Card extension processed on an Urgent Basis? To qualify for urgent processing, you must be: travelling in the next three months, and returning to Canada on a commercial vehicle, like an airplane, train, boat or bus. Even if these conditions apply to you, we may not be able to process your request urgently or get your card to you before you need to travel. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/pr-card/apply-urgent-processing.asp  - Can you imagine the nightmare that is going to happen for visa exempt nationals such as UK, Australian, or other Canadian PR holders who come from visa exempt countries and have to travel without a valid PR card  - in the past, they could often just travel on their Passports and airlines or CBSA would rarely have an issue when they returned because they didn’t need a visa. -however, now if they are PRs, the airlines will not let them board unless they have a valid PR card, or hold an eTA.  -well, PRs of Canada can not apply for an eTA, so what are these people to do? -if you are a PR abroad and you have lost your PR Card, or you have applied to extend it and it has not yet been processed and you want to return to Canada, IRCC requires that you apply for a Travel Document as a Canadian consulate or visa office abroad. -what a colossal waste of time and drain on everyone’s resources. -let me share with you what I am advising my clients. -remember, eTAs only apply to “air travel”. So if you are entering Canada via a land crossing from the US, then the old rules apply  -although there is never a guarantee that a CBSA officer will not give you some hassle, I am advising my visa exempt clients who have PR Card extensions in process and need to travel after their current PR cards have expired to travel to the US by land and then fly domestically within the US or internationally from a US airport and then return to Canada via the land crossing. -obviously, visa exempt nationals with PR status in Canada must still meet the requirements of the US visa waiver program, or hold a valid US visa; however, in this manner, business trips, important personal trips can still be accommodated for without the hassle of applying for a Travel Document. ANSWERS TO LISTENER QUESTIONS Listener #1 From: kumar Subject: [your-subject]   Message Body: hello, I applied for express entry in September 2015 and my file was choose from the pool in oct 2015. After submitting my document in last of oct, they asked me to submit my passport. I submit it last week, I will get my passport in few business days. After receiving my passport, I want to travel to my own country, India for some kind of work. Is that possible, or should I wait for my pr card? If I want to travel to my own country before receiving pr card, then what will be the procedure? can I enter the Canada after my visit to India   Answer: If you must leave before your PR Card is processed, You must apply for a Travel Document at one of the Canadian consulate’s in India before you can return: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/travel.asp   Current processing times to receive your initial PR Card are at 42 days.   http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/   There is a process to request Urgent Processing of your PR card, however, there are no guarantees and I can tell you from my experience that nothing is urgent for them these days -when you factor in all of the people with PR Card extensions pending who need to travel and are going to be caught by the eTA rule, it will be unlikely that any request for urgent processing will be accepted unless there is truly an emergency (and even then it is doubtful)   Listener #2 From: Krishna Subject: [your-subject] Message Body: Good day, Just to give you a background I had applied under the Express Entry program last year through a consultant. However as the consultants were really ineffective I decided to opt out of their services. Now I am trying to apply on my own this year and had a question regarding the application process. While applying I am asked if I had applied to CIC before and there is another question asking if I had applied for EE before. I belive I should say yes, as my ex-immigration consultants had applied on my behalf right? They are yet to share the Express Entry file number and the Unique Client Identifier (UCI). In your opinion they should be sharing these identification numbers with me right? As when I was with them, they never shared these details. regards Krishna    Answer: Absolutely. Any representative, whether immigration consultant or lawyer has an obligation to cooperate with you when you wish to discontinue their representation. If you owe them money, they may be able to keep the work product that they created and not return it to you. However, when it comes material that you have paid for, you are entitled to receive copies of your file materials which includes your EE file number and UCI number. If they refuse, then I recommend that you report them to their regulatory body. "Anybody can grow stuff. It is selling that is the skill." I love that quote from my guest on the Growing Farms Podcast today. George does a great job at cutting to the chase. If you want to make a living farming you have to sell what the customers want and you have to stay on your toes. Selling is one of the more difficult things we have to do as farmers, in my opinion. I have a passion for making my farm viable so that I can stay here for the rest of my life. That being said, I wish I could do everything in barter and not have to have any money exchanges. But alas, that is not how my world works, so I add salesman to the long list of hats I wear on farm. With selling my farm products a necessity it also has to be a priority. As much as the chickens have to get fed and the plants need water your business needs money coming in to thrive. How do we do that though? There are a hundred different answers to that question. Do I sell at a farmers' market? Do I start a CSA? Do I sell everything to restaurants? The answer to those questions lies in careful planning and good market research. Then once you know where you are going to sell it you need to know how to sell those CSA shares, set up for a farmers' market, or develop relationships with Chefs in your area. Matt Griffin, or “Griff” as everyone refers to him, is a military veteran turned entrepreneur. Which, as it turns out, is a path many former military follow. In fact, it's been the focus of numerous studies - researchers wanting to find out if veterans are more likely than their civilian counterparts to become entrepreneurs. Studies have found that they are. But why? Is it the training, education or psychological qualities like self discipline, leadership, and mental fortitude, the military instills? Perhaps. James Bogle, program director for the Master of Business for Veterans program at the University of Southern California, said he has seen an increase in the number of entrepreneurs in their program - and that's just in the two years since the program has launched. James, who served more than 20 years in the military in various capacities and on various assignments all over the world, also said among the entrepreneurs in the program, he has seen two common traits: creativity and confidence. “There's a real creativity,” James said. “I think it starts in the military. There's not a lot of things you do new. A lot of what you do is prescribed by regulation or by field manuals. So I think a lot of people who have that creativity then have a hunger to get out and do something on their own. The other part is I think you develop a real tremendous sense of self confidence in the military.” Another school of thought is most veterans exit the military having taken on so much responsibility and making such a massive impact, they want to continue it. And usually the corporate environment doesn't afford that. “They were having such more impact and such a large amount of responsibility that they don't think they don't think they can go work for someone else,” said Scott Fussell, founder of Command Your Business, a podcast and online business focused on military veteran entrepreneurship. “I think that's why we're seeing a lot of veterans go into entrepreneurship. They want to have an impact and a lot of them are finding entrepreneurship is a way they can have that impact.” Scott, a military veteran, has interviewed more than 70 veterans on the subject of entrepreneurship, and has seen time and time again, that impact is one common reason many vets set out to start their own businesses. That was certainly the case for Griff. Several years after returning stateside, Griff who served three tours in Afghanistan and one tour in Iraq, had the idea for Combat Flip Flops, a company that would have a social impact, while on a business trip in Afghanistan. But it wasn't until a few years later that he would officially launch the company with co-founders Andy Sewrey, his brother in law, and Donald Lee, his brother in arms. “My intent was to keep those guys in that factory, employed, once the war ended,” Griff said. “From that moment forward that was my purpose.” Training for Entrepreneurship But what about those skill sets obtained in the military? Do those make veterans better candidates for entrepreneurship? Maybe. Maybe not. But it certainly primes them for it. “If you've been around enough startups you see that same team, professional, mission-driven mentality, and you see that same thing in the military,” Griff said. “ The ability to fail, come back, learn, regroup, and go out and execute better the next day is something that has really helped us in the startup mode.” Scott has certainly seen similar traits in himself and among the veterans he's interviewed - the ability to learn and solve problems with limited resources. “You have to be able to learn and pick up things quickly [in the military],” Scott said. “Our veterans are very much entrepreneurs and have entrepreneur mindsets. They're given very limited guidance and given very difficult missions and they're able to go out and accomplish them. I think that's what makes many veterans suited for entrepreneurship.” One other trait Scott has noticed, is the ability to iterate on the fly. Though the military plans very well, these plans often go out the window once the first round flies in combat. Scott said having a “commanders intent” or in the case of a business, a strong vision, is key. This ensures everyone knows the end goal and can figure out a way to get there even if the initial roadmap is derailed. The Early Days of Combat Flip Flops In the early days of Combat Flip Flops, how did these trained military skills help Griff and his co-founders? “People thought we were crazy, so we couldn't get any money to invest in the idea,” Griff said. “We guerrilla'd it as much as possible because we had no time, no money and no experience, but we knew we wanted to start this company.” The question remains, can regular civilians pick up those same skills without having to serve in the military? “I think so, it just takes a little bit longer to do,” Griff said. “Because of the fact that the military has specific programs to instill those personality traits in people. But I've met and worked with guys who've never served a day in the military that have the exact same traits and skills, or better traits and skills than guys we saw in the military or special operations unit.” Many entrepreneurs are already innately programmed with these traits, but for those of us who don't come pre-wired with all of the skill sets necessary to entrepreneurship, Scott believes one way to develop these skills, without serving in the military, is to practice getting comfortable with being uncomfortable. Something the military does quite well. For Griff, it was getting comfortable with failure. Something that happens frequently to anyone gutsy enough to start a business, challenge the status quo, or disrupt an industry. While the military certainly primes you to be resilient, it certainly doesn't make you immune to failures, setbacks and challenges. When I asked Griff, ‘If you could return to those early days, when you were just starting out, and knowing what you know now, is there anything you would do differently?,' he gave a chuckle and said “patience.” A characteristic that is foreign to most entrepreneurs. “We executed daily on 60 percent solutions, so I think we would have been a little bit more patient and executed with a little bit more restraint,” Griff said. “We failed early and often, but we recovered. But if I were to do it all over again, I would plan more and execute more deliberately.” Patience is not a virtue you see much among entrepreneurs, but that can often be a good thing. As Griff mentioned, however, deliberate execution is a skill every business owner should strive to master. While that was a challenge during the early days of Combat Flip Flops, today their biggest struggle is supply. The company has been sold out of product for three years. “In the last six months we had another veteran-owned investment group fund us, so now we're able to ramp up the scale in our factories and deliver regularly, so we can turn up the marketing machine and deliver the product.
