WHAT MAKES SUCCESS IN THE TRAGEDY OF WARFARE?? 4/8: The Commanders: The Leadership Journeys of George Patton, Bernard Montgomery, and Erwin Rommel by Lloyd Clark (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Commanders-Leadership-Journeys-Bernard-Montgomery/dp/0802160220/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1IW4D1GLPGRA5&keywords=the+commanders+lloyd+clark&qid=1674136061&s=books&sprefix=THE+COMMANDERS%2Cstripbooks%2C141&sr=1-1 Born in the two decades prior to World War I, George Patton, Bernard Montgomery, and Erwin Rommel became among the most recognized and successful military leaders of the 20th century. However, as acclaimed military historian Lloyd Clark reveals in his penetrating and insightful braided chronicle of their lives, they charted very different, often interrupted, paths to their ultimate leadership positions commanding hundreds of thousands of troops during World War II and celebrated as heroes in the United States, Britain, and Germany. 1860 HINDENBERG.
The early returns on the NFL's "Wildcard Weekend" are "meh" at best, but next weekend is gonna be a blockbuster for sure. Headlined by two utter studs, Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson. Who deserves the MVP? Who cares, can't we just enjoy greatness? The Packers lay a dud against the Eagles, and replay once again shows it's as worthless as tits on a bull. Justin Herbert is a really good QB who all but 6 teams would fight for. So what if he's a "social media" QB. Greg McIlroy has horrific notions of strategy and clock management. Jack Sawyer delivers an all time "sports Hindenberg" to the Longhorns and Quinn Ewers. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Eric welcomes historian Timothy Ryback, the Co-Founder and Director of the Institute for Historical Justice and Reconciliation in the Hague. He has been Director and Vice President of the Salzburg Seminar and a lecturer in History at Harvard University and is the author of Takeover: Hitler's Final Rise to Power (New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2024). They discuss why Tim wrote this book and why it seems especially timely now, the political and historical contingency of Hitler's ability to seize power and why it resulted not just from large historical forces but by a series of decisions by individual players in the drama. The roles of President Hindenberg, Chancellor Franz Von Papen, Chancellor Kurt von Schleicher, and media mogul and nationalist party leader Alfred Hugenberg in the decisions that led Hitler to the Chancellery and the fact that the Nazis never commanded more than 37% of the vote in Germany. They touch on the role of political parties, political violence and the role of big business in the rise of Hitler as well as the critique of liberalism that Hitler and others shared of liberal democracy in Weimar Germany and its resonance in contemporary U.S. politics with figures like Peter Thiel and JD Vance. When we left you last week, attorney Larry McNabney's attempt to become the biggest personal-injury attorney in Nevada had just crashed and burned like the Hindenberg, thanks in no small part to his new wife, Elisa. Elisa was a small-time thief and fraudster from Florida who had thrown the state and her whole life in the rear-view mirror to avoid the possibility of some brief jail time. She'd struck gold when she was hired as an office manager by high-flying attorney Larry in Las Vegas, and rapidly climbed the emotional ranks from employee to mistress to girlfriend to wife. But she had trouble keeping her itchy fingers out of the law firm's cash register, which led to the state bar banning her from working there and reprimanding Larry. Looking for a new start, the couple moved to Sacramento to try and set the whole business rolling again, and at the start of 2000 Elisa hired 19-year-old Sarah Dutra to help her out with the business. But “helping” was not exactly what she did. Join us for part 2 of this chilling true crime story.Sources:Cold Blooded by Carlton SmithMarked for Death by Brian J. Hey Fraudologists! Our sponsor, Forter has created a pitch-free zone for you to win free stuff, read about your peers, and generally take a load off! Head to https://forter.com/fraudology and let me know what you snagged!Read the story of how Jenna Posner became Chief Digital Officer at Snipes.Frank McKenna, the expert behind the popular "Frank on Fraud" blog and Chief Fraud Strategist at PointPredictive stops by to discuss a recent report published by Hindenberg research (A short-selling company intent on exposing fraud for corporate gains) that caused quite a few conversations & headlines within the online fraud world last week. While the report brings up some concerning allegations, Karisse & Frank dissect some of the claims to demonstrate that when it comes to casting blame for online fraud, it's not always black & white. Being accused of enabling fake accounts is nothing new in the tech world, especially when user numbers are often the biggest contributor to a company's valuation. But, where's the line between being "under attack" and "enabling fraud"?Cash App's meteoric rise was due to a rapid series of events including the ripple effects of Covid on the underbanked, massive amounts of fraud being stolen from government assistance programs, and the ease & use of Fintech technology vs. traditional banks. Did they ignore any regulations or simply not do what a group of people without fraud knowledge think they should have done? They also talk about how the type of platform Cash App may enable fraud by other companies' standards, but are they fraudulent to Cash App?What becomes clear in this case is that there may not be a clear "right" or "wrong"; and that more than one thing can be true at once. It can be true that a lot of fraud was caught & prevented (which would only be known internally), but it can also be true that there is always more that can be done to reduce the impact of fraud on an online business, from fake accounts to payment fraud to money laundering. It's also important to remember what every fraud-fighter with experience on "the frontlines" understands. That the battles they "fight" are not only coming from outside their company, but often they are "fighting" battles waged with them internally at the same time. And unlike the fight with cybercriminals, it often requires compromise between the altruistic ideals of the fraud/risk/Trust & Safety team and the demands/goals of the business. Ultimately, neither Frank nor Karisse can make an absolute decision of what should have or could have been/should be done based solely on this report. There just isn't enough data to form an opinion one way or another. But, the topics they discuss & examples they share from a few anonymous fraud-fighters' experiences throughout this episode are timely, and may just prepare you for an upcoming battle you're not aware of yet.Fraudology is hosted by Karisse Hendrick, a fraud fighter with decades of experience advising hundreds of the biggest ecommerce companies in the world on fraud, chargebacks, and other forms of abuse impacting a company's bottom line. Connect with her on LinkedIn She brings her experience, expertise, and extensive network of experts to this podcast semi weekly, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Hindenburg report released merely two days before Adani's public issue, caused a stir in the industry. Resulting in business tycoon Gautam Adani canceling the public issue despite it being fully subscribed. Meanwhile, the free-fall of stocks continued. This raised many questions in the stock market as well as amongst the politicians who questioned why SEBI did not look into the group of companies. Answering and discussing all this and more is investment banker, PN Vijay in conversation with our host Sidharth Bhatia, on The Wire Talks. On today's episode of Who's There, our weekly call-in show, we discuss HBO Max's repeated rudeness toward Leslie Grace, a Who who SHOULD be a Them, before playing calls from Gen-Z'ers who know about the Hindenberg, tourists who know about Coke Light, and pilots who know about Taylor Swift's hangar. Cryptocurrencies have had a rough time of late but they are clearly no flash in the pan. That has driven regulators to intensify their efforts to gain control over this financial frontier. The Bank of England's deputy governor this week sounded a warning that if the crypto world wasn't brought under control soon, it risked suffering its own Hindenberg moment, referring to the time the famous German airship exploded ending, perhaps prematurely, the development of what could have been a useful technology.Of course, there have already been explosions in the crypto markets but regulators are keen to find a way to bring stability to their more useful parts to allow them to flourish. We look at who is trying to bring which bits of crypto to heel and how they plan to do it.Banks have a big part to play in this too. Following the recent release of the ECB's climate stress test for the lenders it regulates, we discuss how banks' involvement in the notoriously energy-hungry crypto markets should be done with the aim of greening it as it develops. We also investigate the latest turmoil in Italian politics. Prime minister Mario Draghi offered to resign this week, sending Italian sovereign debt yields and spreads to Bunds higher, just as his former employer the European Central Bank is expected to reveal its new tool for keeping those very numbers under control. We take a look at what this means for Italy and how SSA borrowers will adapt their funding tactics to cope with ever more frequent disruption — this was not after all the first shock of the week with US inflation coming in above expectations at 9.1%.
This episode covers the tragic history of the Hindenberg Airship, and the paranormal reports it left behind.
Happy New Year, friends and fans! (Since it's late January, are we still allowed to say that? Write us in the comments and let us know - we remain on the fence) Looking for help with your #NewYearNewMe resolutions and plans? Not to worry - our boys Sid and Keith have got you covered this week, as they discuss a forever favorite topic for them that will be as helpful to you here in January as it will be come the depths of December - goal setting. We all start the year with the best of intentions - losing that extra 15 pounds, vowing to work out more, eating healthier, learning a new skill, or growing our business - but as studies and social media show us, a lot of us don't end up making those good-intentioned goals because we can't scratch our way out of the surface level desires we have to achieve said goals. What did we miss? Our boys know the answer because they've been down this hole before and know how to get out - we probably failed to set a strategy. And, because of that, we get stuck in the same old rut we've come to know and expect out of life, complete with the worn-out, indented part of the sofa where we sit to watch our stories on the TV and eat pints of ice cream (that may just be me, to be honest. Ben and Jerry are constant companions and confidants). But, don't fret or fear fumbling - our hosts have hordes of helpful hints that will heal us, help us and hasten our hunt for health and happiness. The true thesis for this week - if you take nothing else from this brilliant broadcast - goals aren't wishes, so just doing a vision board, asking the universe for abundance or sacrificing small livestock in a ceremonial pyre isn't going to get you where you want to go. You have to be willing to answer the hard questions, dig deep within yourself and figure out a realistic way to achieve your aims (and check with your home owners association about whether you are allowed to have ceremonial fire pyres in your yard; if they won't let you have a decorative mailbox or fly your football team's flag, they probably don't want you sacrificing a goat ... just a hunch). A goal is a strategic plan, not a simple desire. We must begin to ask deeper, more specific questions that force ourselves to figure out how we are going to actually accomplish that goal. And this advice is evergreen for both personal and business goals. You can be killing it in the business world but have a Hindenberg disaster of a personal life because you've focused too much on building the business. Sid and Keith are here for you again, giving you that audial good good to live the life you long for but lack. Building a better you is the name of the game for this week's Overlap Podcast, so tune in and turn it up - you won't want to miss a minute of the delightful discourse and discussion. #NewYearNewYou #SameOldSidAndKeith. Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk: true-life, practical, funny, heart-breaking, insightful human experience stories from women who are walking their lives while their lives walk them and the lasting difference these journeys have made. You’ll recognize yourself in stories of adversity, challenge, fear, discovery, adventure, expression, and more. Why? Because, the sorcery of stories is this: they help each of us to be seen and heard, to understand and be understood. I’m your host, Diane Wyzga.Today my guest is Sarah B Rawz who’s joining us from Virginia. When last we spoke I was beginning to pose a question to Sarah B about a favorite topic of hers: From Gremlins to Golden Buddha. Let’s hear what this talented, insightful, and fabulous coach has to share with us.Minute0:00 to 2:20 IntroductionFrom Gremlins to Golden Buddha2:00 to 8:45 Discomfort and the GremlinsHow do we discern the inner Bad Mind Radio voice from our wisdomDiscomfort as a topic is so present for me and, I think, so many of us. It ties in beautifully to the Gremlin/Golden Buddha topic: discerning the deprecating inner voices from the wisdom, especially potent and challenging in the midst of discomfort! The part of me that says I am not enough, arrogant, afraid, and so on - these are gremlinsGremlins behave as loud, over-powering, influencers who know which buttons to push versus the quiet voice of inner wisdomSarah B stumbled on a useful technique: naming the parts of us that are gremlins and befriend them as a practice and a processWompuss is her Gremlin of Not EnoughAnother insight from a partnered meditation called focusing (Hindenberg burning) illuminated Wompuss as not fierce but sad and blue and haystack-ishThese exercises changed conversations with wounded parts of herselfPractical tip: approach the self with compassion to get to the voice of wisdomOffer compassion to access wisdom and knowingHow did the foster children experience inform Sarah B’s own gremlin experienceThe gremlins may be "foster children" and the notion parallels the image of a night-frightened childWe honor the emotional reality of the child's night fright but don’t buy in to the interpretation of fear, for example, as being monsters under the bed8:45 to 12:45 The Golden Buddha Story Sarah B tells the storyThe story is a metaphor for what we cover up, what we can chip away, and what we can negotiate to let go of to live freely, profoundly accepting ourselvesProcess of learning gremlins and selves is a process of growth, more information, more tools, to negotiate a golden life12:45 to 46:36 Three Tips to Shift Gremlin to Golden BuddhaMost important tip: perpetually attempting extraordinary patience because our life is a journey toward uncoveringSecond tip: Use your body as your guide. Take 30 seconds to practice a full body scan to light up the hot spots of discomfort, experience the sensations, and inquire into what’s going on. This way we build trust with ourselves to uncover inner wisdomThird tip: Practice noticing and appreciating each pleasure, each joy, each tiny accomplishment“How could this get any better?” Says that this is great and I’m ready for even better! From gratitude comes energyNetworking As Discomfort - So Now What? 16:40 to 22:50 Networking Is Icky and InsincereNetworking as discomfort - a weighted wordParticularly relevant with COVID and networking onlineWe are no longer mixing in person; so, now what? How do I network now in stucknessHow do we manage the minefields with the gremlin voiceBegin here: translate ‘networking’ into ‘relationship building’Approach the relationship with curiosity to see what arrivesWe live in an inevitable web of interconnection; we get to choose to lean in or lean awayNetworking is relationship buildingWithin relationship building is trust and curiosity to see what might be thereWhat might be there waiting for me in this box of chocolates that looks like a personAs long as your “ask” comes from authentic intention (1) we are people being people who need one another, and (2) feels good being of supportCross-pollination: good for the bees and good for the peopleLegacy22:50 to 27:55 Lasting Results"I'm not saying I'm gonna change the world, but I guarantee that I will spark the brain that will change the world." ~ Tupac ShakurWithout biological children, what happens to my nameIf I don’t have a literal legacy, my personal and professional impact is the energy ripple to betterment, empathy, and compassion“Each one teach one” (English As a Second Language) Just do your work and trust that we came here with a cosmic contract to be of use: to live, to work, to loveSarah B’s professional role: Learn - Share - RepeatA source of joy for Sarah B to experience life being of use and support to benefit others 27: 55 to 31:09 Thank You With a Full HeartBefore I say thank you I want to mention that all social media links as well as all the connections to Sarah B’s website, newsletter and blog are posted below in these Episode Notes. This is not a recording from Switzerland but an interesting recording nonetheless. The Hindenberg Arrival in Lakehurst NewJersey as Reported by Herb Morrison of WLS Radio recorded May 6,1937 The disaster was the subject of newsreel coverage, photographs, and Herbert Morrison's recorded radio eyewitness reports from the landing field, which were broadcast the next day. A variety of hypotheses have been put forward for both the cause of ignition and the initial fuel for the ensuing fire. The event shattered public confidence in the giant, passenger-carrying rigid airship and marked the abrupt end of the airship era. An interesting old time radio recording from 1937. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/astounded-sound/message

Imperial Airships would bring the far flung peoples of the British Empire closer together than ever before. Every day, blimps would slip their masts near London carrying passengers and freight bound for Montreal, Cairo, Karachi, Singapore and Sydney. Journeys that had once been measured in months would breeze past in days. The Imperial Airship Service would bind Canada, Australia, South Africa, Egypt, India and New Zealand into a true global superpower. Britannia still ruled the waves. But now, she would dominate the sky. These dreams were dashed when the world’s largest airship ploughed into the ground in northern France on its inaugural flight to India. Britain’s Hindenburg disaster ended an imperial flirtation with airships. Did it also deal a blow for the future of the British Empire?

Jassy Talks About the Competition Pretty amazingly candid interview for the say nothing company (http://www.geekwire.com/2017/amazon-cloud-leader-andy-jassy-sizes-competition-rare-public-remarks-rivals/) "I don't think in our wildest dreams we ever thought we'd have a six- to seven-year head start" When people say lock-in, it's dog-whistling for "Oracle." "He also argued that these trends are reversible, that improved education and a greater emphasis on entrepreneurship and research can help feed new engines of growth"... we (the US) are so screwed Coté: I keep going back to McKinsey saying 70% of work is menial; I'm sure that "study" is wonky and loaded, but still, we do so much bullshit in daily work. Another example: several Pivotal customers (Allstate, HCSC) say they usually get 40%+ productivity improvements because they stop going to meetings and actually code 7 hours a day instead of bullshit. "In Austin, the average salary for a software engineer on Hired is $110K. But this is the equivalent to making $198K in San Francisco when you consider the cost of living difference between the two cities." "...we see a similar trend in Melbourne. Wil, Jason, Gabe and Michael take you back to one of the most famous travel disasters of all time.
In this episode of Len Jones' memoirs, Len recounts the 3rd Battalion's activities in 1917. He also describes the reaction of his family and friends when he goes on 'Blighty' leave. We hear about attacks at Hermies and the Lagnicourt, the German 'retreat' to the Hindenberg line in early 1917, boils, sausage balloons and the Red Baron. This episode is shorter than the last epic so come along for the ride.

So I found myself in Melbourne Australia in the middle of a music festival at a Koala reserve because even though I recently turned thirty, I am still an overgrown child clinging on to my eucalyptus tree of youth. To make matters worse I was wandering around in a neon animal print onesie talking to Ozzy's totally munted youth (new world! means chewing face!)I saw a giant inflatable igloo with a man named Lucky Toby gaurding the door in a matching floral suit. No one was allowed to go in. It was this amazing VIIIIP igloo and all these stoned festival goers kept wanting to know what it was and the answer was invariably, you can't come. The people inside are too famous. They granted me an exclusive interview, which I was very greatful for at 7 which was three hours from when I recorded the first part of this. He was guarding Melboune's most famous unheard of supergroup, Expen$$$ive who was doing an exclusive VIP meet and greet in said bubble for their "fans." When you walked into the bubble there were three girls dressed in almost nothing sort of like Britney Spears in the Lucky Video, all frills and fluff and pink with barbie perfume and blank CD's, troll dolls and high heels and pink feathers. Usually I would get along famously with people like this, but from the moment I stepped in, I felt the Hindenberg start to catch fire. To be clear, the didn't like me. One bit. Not one bit. And I for the first time EVER ended up apologizing to an interviewee because I was trapped in this bubble with three very hormonal women who all looked like they could beat the shit out of me, who also possibly could have had some gender identity issues. They looked like the girls who did backstage at theatre camp, and were ready to put my head into a wood chipper. I also have gotten into a fair amount of trouble with lesbians in my life, they usually have a shit sense of humor. So even though I am NEVER sorry for being offensive OR talking about other peoples cervii I bowed down to their power and got the fuck out of igloo (dodge)I still don't know whether this was all a practical joke. Which is what makes it so genius. Keep turning it up to 11 ladies.
Freaturing Fred Nation, J Dot, Darnell and Saska (later known as StevieB) This is the second sex episode of the High Horse Radio. We capitalize on the fact that we have a female on the panel, to ease the creep factor of listening to men talk about sex alone in a small room. (not really alone as there are three of us but you get the picture) We discuss all things from orgasms to ornamnets to sluts and dominants. Other topics include The Folly of the Royal Family, The perversion of the nighly news, Social Conditioning, Popular Myths Busted. The Cane. War of the Worlds. Orson Welles. Hindenberg. Blackish. Littering Campaigns. Drinking Age. and heaps of way more intersting stuff that i just can't remember cos the episode was 3 hours and was having so much fun that it went so so quickkly and now it's a blur..... Liberated syndication at it's kindest and finest for you to enjoy, simply bye going to @highhorseradio on twitter & High Horse Radio on iTunes + Libsyn.com to download and subscribe (@frednations, @jdotgater, @MC_StevieB)
Episode 30: We ascend into comedy heaven with Evan Richardson and Morgan George, half the sketch outfit Vest of Friends. We talk about the worst motivational speakers in the world, heaven and hell, the Hindenberg disaster, and vests. Joining us by phone is Fancave 30 alumnus Matthew James live from the game in Anaheim, California. Also appearing are a cavalcade of broadcaster impersonations and Albert Pujols' long-anticipated first home run of the year. We really like this episode.
