No ayuda mucho a iluminar nuestra oscuridad. El trabajo de la meditación samatha es enfocar el haz de luz, y al mismo tiempo recargar las baterías para que podamos empezar a ver con claridad. Atendamos a lo contado …

(Spirit Rock Meditation Center) We often hear that the heart of the teachings and practice is to connect wisdom and compassion, clear seeing and the kind heart, developing what Jack Kornfield calls the "wise heart." Yet such a connection or integration can be challenging in several ways. First of all, we have major conditioning in modern Western culture to separate the "mind" and the "heart" (or emotions), as well as the body. Also we find tendencies in the Theravada tradition to see Metta practice as separate from Insight practice, as in the way that Buddhaghosa in the influential text, the Visuddhimagga, lists Metta practice as a form of Concentration practice, and in some of the ways that Metta is taught as a complement to insight practice in the West. In this talk, we begin to explore what it might look like to integrate more fully Metta and wisdom, mindfulness, and insight, both in formal practice and daily life. The talk is followed by discussion.

In this episode I am joined by Professor John Myrdhin Reynolds, also known as Lama Vajranatha: writer, teacher, translator and scholar/practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism.  Professor Reynolds recounts his adventurous life of practice and scholarship, including extensive travels throughout Asia and discipleship under revered gurus such as Dudjom Rinpoche, Namkai Norbu, and Lopon Tenzin Namdak. Professor Reynolds details his journey through American academia, explains why he turned down an invitation from the CIA to create Tibetan propaganda, and shares anecdotes of Tibetologists such as Hugh Richardson and Edward Conze, including the latter's escape from the Nazis and defection from Communist activism. Professor Reynolds also recalls his first out of body experience brought on by a car crash, the mystical visions of water spirits, dakinis, and other beings that have featured in his life since, and tells the story of the tragic consequences of the Gelugpa destruction of the psychic barrier erected by Padmasambhava to protect Tibet from China. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep200-lama-vajranatha-professor-john-myrdhin-reynolds

Listen to Dr. Samuel Dismond explain an evolutionary perspective on what is commonly called ADD/ADHD. This evolution story recasts the so-called dysfunctions of ADHD as unique ultra-functions possessed by Sentinels. The story begins 100,000 years ago as our DNA became fixed as Homo sapiens. Within small primitive groups, the round scanning awareness of the Sentinel bloodline featured critically in the history of group survival.Dr. D graphically illustrates how our very recent modern circumstance differs from our origin times. Our modern world has become a series of boxes connected by lines from kindergarten to career. These edges and squares can be challenging for the round awareness of Sentinels. Nonetheless, it is very possible for Sentinels to thrive and find themselves ‘in the right place, at the right time' in their life. The topics in this interview include:Scientific parts and mysterious stories meet when our “quiet brains meet green biomass”.What is a Sentinel? Not a deficit but rather a valuable genetic variant: a new way to understand ADHD.The powerful effect of green, natural environments on our brain. Why modern life has become a series of lines and boxes. How nature walks can untangle the tangles of life stories. At the end of the episode Dr. D shares an evidence-based breath work technique  to help slow down and absorb while walking through green nature.Dr. Samuel Dismond III, MD MBA, specializes in treating adults with ADHD. He provides a patient-centered approach and believes in the importance of the patient-doctor connection. Dr. D has been practicing as a  general physician for 32 years. He got his MD at the University Of Michigan Medical School as well as an MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Dr. D is a lifelong practitioner of qigong. In this episode, I talk with Dhammarato - a lineage teacher in the Thai Buddhist tradition who has gained an enthusiastic internet following for his unique, 1-1 teaching style conducted over Skype. We discuss Dhammarato’s adventures throughout India studying in search of magic and meditation; his encounters with gurus such as Muktananda, Sai Baba, and Osho; why meeting famed meditation master Buddhadasa turned his search for magic upside down and saw him ordain as a Buddhist monk in the Thai Tradition. We discuss what Dhammarato calls the ‘supra-mundane Dhamma’; hear his take on the failings of Western Buddhism; learn why he believes Visuddhimagga author Buddhaghosa was either a charlatan or a fool; and discover Dhammarato’s surprisingly simple advice on correct practice. Richard Shankman, a teacher in the insight meditation tradition and the author of the recently released book The Experience of Samadhi, joins us to discuss the various teachings and approaches to what in the Theravada tradition is called samadhi or concentration meditation.During this episode Richard shares some of his personal background with samadhi practice and also explains two different forms of deep samadhi, called jhana in the Theravada tradition–one from the time of the Buddha as captured by the Pali Suttas and another which arouse hundreds of years later and which is captured in the authoritative text, the Visuddhimagga. Listen in to find out about these different forms of deep concentration and absorption, which are a hallmark of the Theravada tradition of Buddhism…This is part 1 of a two-part series. Philosopher and long-time Buddhist practitioner, Ken Wilber, shares with us a 10,000 foot view of the terrain of meditative experience. He describes several of the most common Buddhist maps and their progression, including the one presented in the Visuddhimagga (one of the most prevalent in the Theravada tradition), the 10 ox herding pictures in the Zen tradition, and the Anuttara Tantra from the Tibetan tradition. He also gives an overview of the very difficult stages of practice called the Dark Nights. These are periods where after being plunged into a whole new experience of reality we have it stripped from us and feel like we have lost what was once discovered. Another meaning of the dark night has to do with dis-identifying with previous levels of consciousness, and the difficult journey of releasing our grasping and addiction to these lower levels. This is part 1 of a two-part series. Listen to part 2, Horizontal and Vertical Enlightenment. Episode Links: Integral Life ( https://www.integrallife.com )

This afternoon Alan deepens into the subject of Loving-Kindness. He cites sources from the Mettā Sutta  found in the Pali Canon; the Visuddhimagga (The Path of Purification) written by Buddhaghosa , and, of course from the Buddha itself when he says we shouldn’t doubt the Four Immeasurables as explained in the Kalama Sutra. Explains that what we are cultivating an aspiration, that the object of this discursive meditation are all sentient beings. He then guides the meditation saying that we could use the liturgies like a starter for the meditation in Loving-Kindness. Más... Sin comentarios
