That is why I am calling on Democratic and Republican leaders to unify on this issue. I'm asking Democrats in particular to reexamine their assumption that a loose border is somehow more compassionate. It is not. It has created a humanitarian crisis for the migrants that is now destroying our cities, crushing our social services, and harming the working poor by undercutting their wages.” You can learn more about the event here: https://www.kennedy24.com/kennedy_slams_biden_border_policy 4:15pm- New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) announced that the National Guard will be deployed to help her state deal with the surge in undocumented migrants. 4:20pm- On Sunday, 60 Minutes documented that the United States is financing more than just defense weapons in Ukraine—an enormous amount of tax-payer money is also being used for farming, 57,000 first responder salaries, and the subsidization of Ukrainian small businesses. 4:25pm- On Meet the Press, political analyst Steve Kornacki said there is “nothing but good news” for Donald Trump when reviewing the latest polling numbers. 4:35pm- While appearing on Face the Nation, host Margaret Brennan asked Rep. Bonta, involved California's ban on magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, which a federal judge deemed unconstitutional in a decision published on Friday.” You can read Sullem's full article here: https://reason.com/2023/09/24/californias-10-round-magazine-limit-is-unconstitutional-a-federal-judge-rules-again/ 5:20pm- Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) vetoed California Bill AB957 which would have required state judges to guarantee parents are open to “gender affirmation” care for their children when deciding custody battles. Donald Trump was found liable for sexually abusing and defaming E. Jean Carroll and was ordered to pay $5 million in damages, after a civil trial. The California Reparations Task Force formally recommended that the state offer payments of up to $1.2 million to every qualifying Black resident. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made it clear in an interview that he fundamentally understands that censorship is un-American. A new Washington Post/ABC News poll shows Biden trails his Trump by 7 points in a hypothetical 2024 general election matchup. There is a growing movement for schools across the country to reduce the school week from 5 to 4 days. This is already disastrous for our kids' academic trajectory moving forward.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The most odious is Texas' new bounty system, but it's not the only anti-abortion measure approved of late. And while there's no doubt that much of the Republican base is delighted with the policy offensive, a new Washington Post-ABC News poll makes clear that these changes are not what the American mainstream wants. From the Post's report on the poll results:” “Americans say by a roughly 2-to-1 margin that the Supreme Court should uphold its landmark abortion decision in Roe v. Wade, and by a similar margin the public opposes a Texas law banning most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll.” The Doctrine of Lesser Magistrates in Action (MSNBC) https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/pentagon-isn-t-giving-oklahoma-guard-choice-vaccine-policy-n1283965 “Up until last week, Maj. Gen. Mike Thompson was serving as an uncontroversial adjutant general of the Oklahoma National Guard. He then got a phone call from Kevin Stitt, the state's Republican governor, who told the major general that he was fired. Thompson spoke to Tulsa Public Radio a day later and said he wasn't given a reason for his dismissal. It wasn't long, however, before an explanation came into focus. On the heels of Thompson's ouster, the GOP governor tapped Brig. Gen. Thomas Mancino as the new adjutant general of the Oklahoma National Guard, and on Mancino's first day — before he was even confirmed by the state Senate — the brigadier general announced that he intends to ignore the Defense Department's Covid-19 vaccine requirement for all troops.”The Jab don't work (NOQ) https://noqreport.com/2021/11/16/the-most-vaxxed-nation-on-earth-just-canceled-christmas-over-exponential-rise-in-covid-cases/ “How do we know mainstream media will cancel all mentions of the nation of Gibraltar for the foreseeable future? Because their extreme Covid vaccination protocols have utterly failed to prevent a massive spike in cases and hospitalizations. This betrays the narrative they've been ordered to propagate, so Gibraltar is officially a taboo topic for the press. The nation averages 2.79 doses of Covid-19 jabs administered per person.”

Well, the big roads, bridges, and fossil-fuel infrastructure bill passed. And now...drumroll please...it looks like the more important Build Back Better reconciliation bill is on the ropes as fossil fuel industry and corporate-backed Democrats renege on their promises. Hope you have your flood and fire insurance updated. Earlier in the week, Brian Deese, the director of Biden's National Economic Council told PBS: “We are confident that this framework will pass the House and will pass the Senate. And what we're telling lawmakers is, this is an easy vote.” As COP 26 wraps up in Glasgow, Scotland it is clear that the developed countries are going to rely on magic and wishful thinking to address the climate crisis. According to Climate Action Tracker, only four parties - Chile, Costa Rica, the European Union, and the U.K. - have any kind of concrete plan to meet their pledges to cut the carbon cord. While nations - including the U.S. - have committed to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the Century, current policies put us on track for 2.7 degrees Celsius. And time is running out. It's been a banner week for right-wing extremists. Kyle Rittenhouse puts on a show in an attempt to avoid accountability for killing two people and wounding a third during a #BlackLivesMatter protest last year in Kenosha, Wisconsin. And, Republican Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona, tweeted out an altered anime video showing a character with his face killing a character with AOC's face. Despite the dire warnings from scientists and direct experience with extreme weather, a new Washington Post-ABC News polls finds Americans' views on the threat of climate climate change remains unchanged over the past seven years. And, surprise, surprise, the gap between Democrats and Republicans has only grown. Austria is preparing to place millions of unvaccinated people on lockdown as chancellor Alexander Schallenberg expressed the exasperation of many European leaders calling it shameful that people refuse to get vaccinated, putting their communities at risk. The move comes as COVID cases are surging in Europe. Oh, yea, and the leaders of Belarus have got an extremist grift going. They're massing refugees from the Middle East on the border of Poland with promises they will be given entry to Poland. The problem? 1) it was a lie; 2) Poland's right-wing government doesn't want them. Prepared for more of this, folks as the climate crisis grows. Republicans are getting high on their own supply of ivermectin. Joe Rogan has become the right-wing's go-to source for medical advice. Meanwhile, the pandemic news takes a turn for the worse as we are seeing a surprising spike in COVID cases in states with high vaccination levels. That paints a rather concerning picture for this winter. Day-time TV host and vaccine skeptic Dr Oz. is looking to make a gubernatorial run in Pennsylvania. Conor Lamb went on social media the other night telling everyone that he's a “normal” brunch-going, Manchin like Democrat and if you don't like it, well, then he's “NOT YOUR GUY.” In the day's following Lamb's late-night twitter rant about socialism, Civiqs and the Inquirer released a new poll that showed Lt Gov John Fetterman polling at 52% while Lamb was polling at 12%. Clearly, not our guy. Hundreds of striking Scranton Federation of Teachers members went to the capitol Wednesday calling out the “state-sponsored union busting” happening in Scranton. The teachers went on strike over a week ago after working without a contract for 4 years. Speakers included Senator Marty Flynn, Lt Gov John Fetterman and House Rep Malcolm Kenyatta. Central Bucks School Board meeting goes off the rails as a few members of the community take the mic during the public comment period to spew transphobic and anti-semitic comments. MotherJones and WHYY looked into the “successes” fringe school board pac's had with their local school board races and it turns out the PACs supporting right-wing candidates had zero victories in competitive races across Bucks and Montgomery Counties. Kutztown University food service workers continue their fight for a union. They will be holding a rally at 5:30 on Tuesday, November 16 outside South Dining Hall on campus. The workers sought voluntary recognition from Aramark, but the company has been dragging its feet. Kutztown University food service workers are the only ones in the State System of Higher Education without a union. SpaceX launched another four astronauts to the ISS this week on its Crew-3 mission. The launch marks SpaceX's fifth crewed launch in less than 18 months. Shenzhou 13 astronauts continued construction of China's new space station over the weekend in a six and a half hour space walk. This was the first of two or three planned space walks to install a robotic arm and prepare the module for the arrival of new equipment and modules next year. Heinz rolled out its first “Mars Edition” ketchup this week. The ketchup was made from tomatoes grown in Mars-like conditions. According to CNN, “A team of 14 astrobiologists worked for nine months at the Aldrin Space Institute at the Florida Institute of Technology, growing tomatoes in a controlled environment with soil, temperature and water conditions similar to Mars.” Research team leader Andrew Palmer said, “Before now, most efforts around discovering ways to grow in Martian-simulated conditions are short-term plant growth studies. What this project has done is look at long-term food harvesting. Achieving a crop that is of a quality to become Heinz Tomato Ketchup was the dream result and we achieved it.”
A Washington Post/ABC News poll finds that about 51 percent of Americans disapprove of Biden's handling of “the immigration situation at the US-Mexico border” where illegal immigration is set for one of the worst years in American history. Meanwhile, only 33 percent of Americans approve of Biden's handling of illegal immigration at the southern border. Biden is also underwater in polling on the issue of crime. A plurality of 48 percent of Americans disapprove of Biden's handling of crime while fewer than 4-in-10 Americans approve of his handling of the issue.

A new Washington Post/ABC News poll finds that a majority of Americans disapprove of the job President Joe Biden is doing on immigration — as illegal border crossings smash records month over month creating an unprecedented crisis. A new Washington Post/ABC News poll has found that new gun control laws are declining in popularity among Americans on the right and in the middle of the political spectrum, while Democrats still broadly support imposing new restrictions on responsible gun owners.
Several new polls were released over the weekend and Donald Trump is still trailing Joe Biden by roughly 7 to 10 points, depending where you look. Despite Biden’s steady lead, bad takes abound in the journalism world. “Here’s what happens when a race is not particularly close on the numbers,” Sarah explains. “People in the media try to make it more interesting by finding tea leaves and little nuggets that no one else has found and then blowing those up into their own narrative.” Sarah says it’s not always that the methodology of a particular poll is bad per se, “it’s that the causal relationship between the question and the result is assumed and not actually there.” For example, a series of polls from this weekend show that a majority of Americans oppose Trump’s decision to fill the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s Supreme Court seat before November 3. But as Sarah points out, this is a dumb survey question for two reasons: 1) the answers break down along party lines when you look a little closer at the survey responses, and 2) it doesn’t ask survey respondents whether it will change their vote, which is the only thing that matters at this point. That leads us to the New York Times’ bombshell report on Trump’s tax returns and whether it will be of any consequence during this election. David and Sarah argue that loyal Trump supporters are simply too attached to the president at this point to care about any new scandals that emerge between now and November 3. The United States is in search of leadership on many significant challenges we face at this difficult moment in our country. And on two major issues — the handling of the coronavirus pandemic and protests against racism and police brutality — most Americans are dissatisfied with the leadership they’ve seen thus far.As cases rise across the country and fears persist, a Washington Post-ABC News poll found that 60 percent of Americans disapprove of President Trump’s handling of the virus.Meanwhile, polls also show that a majority of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of protesters and race relations. In fact, a Post-Schar School poll last month showed that a large margin of voters said it was more important to have a president who could heal racial divisions than one who could restore security by enforcing law.Trump started off this week seemingly with hopes of turning polls around. But his strategy has been somewhat perplexing. On the coronavirus, Trump is seemingly attempting to reset, almost start over. He has reintroduced coronavirus-focused press briefings, he’s even put on a mask a few times and tweeted pictures of himself wearing one.But on protests, it seems like the president is doubling down. Trump has sent federal law enforcement officials into Portland, Ore., escalating clashes on the city’s streets between protesters and authorities. And he’s threatening to send more federal agents into Democratic-led cities experiencing spates of crime across the country. So why is Trump taking such different approaches to these two issues, both where he’s met with public disapproval? Can his attempts at a coronavirus do-over help contain the virus? And, on the other hand, how much power does the president have to send federal forces into American cities? As Trump casts himself as a law-and-order strongman, what are the consequences? On this episode of the“Can He Do That?” podcast, White House reporter Ashley Parker explains Trump’s latest messaging on the coronavirus and national security reporter Matt Zapotosky discusses where Trump’s power is limited when it comes to federal force.Want to share your feedback on this show and other Washington Post podcasts? An uprising by some soldiers began Tuesday morning after a speech by opposition leader Juan Guaido, who claimed to have the country's armed forces behind him. With full support of the United States and its allies, Guaido illegally proclaimed himself “interim president” in January. What's going on in Venezuela? In a tweet, Bolivian President Evo Morales condemned the attempted coup on Tuesday, stating, “We strongly condemn the attempted coup d'état on #Venezuela the part of the right which is submissive to foreign interests. Sure that the courageous Bolivarian revolution at the head of the brother @NicolasMaduro, will be imposed on this new attack of the Empire.” Morales went on to say that the United States “seeks to provoke violence and death in #Venezuela, does not care about human losses.” Morales also called on Latin American governments to condemn the coup attempt and prevent the escalation of violence. There are a number of developments on the immigration front. US President Donald Trump is tightening asylum rules and will make immigrants pay fees to seek humanitarian refuge. The president has claimed that migrants are being sent to sanctuary cities. Further, the percentage of Democrats who see the border situation as a "crisis" has jumped 17 points since January, amid a spike in migrant families arriving there, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll. The newest Washington Post/ABC News poll shows President Trump's approval rating at 36%, the lowest rating for a president in 70 years. However, the poll also shows that 52% of people think the only message coming from the Democratic Party is that they are anti-Trump. Michael Steele and Rick Ungar discuss these numbers and how they could shape the 2018 midterms. The guys also talk to Democratic strategist Don Calloway about what we might see when Congress takes up the contentious issue of tax reform.
In this episode, we finish discussing the results of our Colorado survey. We cover the topics of repealing and replacing Obamacare and how well the Democrat and Republican parties are connecting with Colorado voters. We also discuss voter opinion of a building a wall along the Mexican border, the Trump administration’s temporary travel ban from seven Muslim countries and withholding federal funding from cities that do not enforce our nation’s immigration laws. Overview Among likely 2018 voters, 63% think that the Republican Party is out of touch and 60% think that the Democratic Party is out of touch. Respondents are split on the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), as 48% oppose the legislation and 47% support it. When asked how they want Congress to handle Obamacare, a clear majority of 60% wants to keep what works and fix what doesn’t. That number is far lower among Republicans, as 40% would prefer that that law is repealed and that Congress would start over with new healthcare legislation. When asked about specific policies that been enacted or discussed during President Trump’s first 100 days in office, small majorities oppose the travel ban on predominantly Muslim countries (52% oppose) and the proposal to withhold federal funding from sanctuary cities (53% oppose). 62% of respondents oppose building a wall along the U.S. border of Mexico that is estimated to cost billions of dollars. Both Parties Viewed as Out of Touch When asked whether the Republican Party is in touch with the concerns of most people in Colorado, 63% of respondents think that it is out of touch. The Democratic Party does not fare much better, as 60% of respondents think that it is out of touch. These results are roughly in line with what the latest Washington Post/ABC News poll found, which we discussed on our podcast last week. A Split on Obamacare Now over a month removed from the first failed attempt at repeal, respondents were asked whether they support or oppose the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. The results show a very divided 2018 electorate split along partisan lines, with 86% of Republicans opposing Obamacare and 86% of Democrats supporting it. Not only is there a partisan split, but voter intensity is also high on both sides, as 72% of Republicans strongly oppose Obamacare, and 60% of Democrats strongly support it. Clearly, whatever actions are taken by the Republican-led Congress regarding Obamacare will be important in determining the political environment for 2018. In this episode, we discuss the recent round of polls showing voter opinion of President Trump’s first 100 days. How important are these polls, how relevant are they to the 2018 midterm elections, and what are some important indicators? We then briefly discuss France’s Presidential election, the polling, and what it suggests for the future of European politics. Segment 1: President Trump’s First 100 Days The last week has brought us two major polls, one from NBC News/Wall Street Journal and another from The Washington Post/ABC News, revealing public opinion of President Trump’s first 100 days in office. The two polls find similar measurements of Trump’s job approval, at 40% and 42%, respectively, and the NBC News Wall Street Journal survey found that 45% of respondents believe that the President is off to a “poor start.” Much of analysis in the media has focused on historical comparisons. NBC notes that at this same point, President Obama’s approval rating was 61%, George W. Bush’s was 56% and President Clinton’s was at 52%. Dan Balz and Scott Clement at The Washington Post report that President Trump’s job approval is the lowest recorded at this stage dating back to Eisenhower. Still, both surveys do find some positive data points for the President. The Washington Post/ABC News survey finds that only 2% of his voters’ regret voting for him, and his approval rating among them stands at 94%. Also, his efforts to pressure U.S. companies to keep jobs here enjoy broad support at 73%. And when respondents were asked whether President Trump is in touch with the concerns of most people in the United States today, or is he out of touch, 38% said that he is in touch, which is a higher percentage than both the Republican Party and the Democratic Party generally. In the NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey, 50% of respondents say they approve of the President’s handling of Syria. The first 100 days of Trump’s presidency also show a country that is incredibly polarized. According to the Huffington Post Pollster’s aggregate, 85% of Republicans approve of the job the President is doing compared to only 12% of Democrats and 40% of Independents. 43% approve of the President’s handling of the economy, while only 35% approve of his handling of health care. Segment 2: French Presidential Election The results of France’s first round of presidential elections are in, and Emmanuel Macron will face off against the National Front’s Marine Le Pen in a May 7th election. It was a good result for most pollsters, who correctly called the top four candidates and the order, and were remarkably close to the final percentage of the vote for each candidate. As Harry Enten at FiveThirtyEight notes, polls in France have historically been fairly accurate, certainly more so than polls in the United Kingdom have been. At this point, Macron has an overwhelming, 26-point lead in a head-to-head matchup with Le Pen. Still, news coverage leading up to the May 7th election will almost certainly seek to draw comparisons to last year’s U.S. presidential election. That may be a mistake. As Nate Silver points out here, Le Pen finds herself in a much deeper hole than Trump was ever in. There’s not a lot of precedent for a polling error large enough to cover such a large, 26-point deficit. This has led to some prominent models giving Le Pen very little chance to win. Others, however, are far more cautious. For example, political scientist Ian Bremmer, who runs The Eurasia Group, gives Le Pen a 40% chance. At least partly underlying that kind of caution is surely a comparison to, again, last year’s U.S. Presidential election. However, the fact that France has no equivalent of our Electoral College is important to remember. Bremmer also suggested before the first round of voting what many suggest was a dynamic at play in the U.S. last year: that poll respondents are reluctant to voice support for Le Pen, just as they supposedly were for Donald Trump. While we’re skeptical that this phenomenon actually did play out last year, there is even more reason to be skeptical in a European election. This is because, as, again, Nate Silver points out, we have quite a bit of data on whether European right-wing parties actually outperform their polls, and the fact is that they generally don’t.
